1st Place Poetry The Early Bird Catches the Worm by Charles Gabriel Gelotin

At the prime age of 25, I decided to kill myself. Lost my hope in humanity Caged in eternal darkness That I can never escape from Back when I reached my legality at 18, I tried everything I haven't - all things I was deprived of Kissed everyone I just met Sold eveything I can But no crystal can lift high This level of despair I feel inside And no smoke can hide My unwanted scars long ago acquired Back at 12, I lived my life anew under a different roof But despite the thickness of blood compared to water, I was still victimized

The joke is on me, yet again Because the stench of my uncle's smell A resemblance of a pigpen Left a permanent curse I was not the Maria I used to be abused Because, looking back, At the young age of 7, Trapped in my parent's closet, I heard a gunshot for the first time I woke up Earlier than kids my age And, instead of dreaming of unicorns and rainbows, I started dreaming of revenge and seek� ing for justice Not just for my parents but for the childhood I lost
