Dear Reader,

We are pleased to present the new special Chinese-language edition of Ceramic World Review, the leading international magazine for the ceramic industry. This issue features a selection of articles offering insights into the global economic and market landscape. Of particular note are the forecasts for the tile industry through 2028, as well as reports on tile exports from India and China in 2024, and an in-depth analysis of global import-export flows in the sanitaryware sector. This edition also includes a substantial selection of the most interesting and recent technological innovations for tile and brick production, presented by top brands representing the excellence of Made in Italy. Many of these companies are key participants in the 39th edition of Ceramics China, to which we dedicate this special publication.

Around 800 exhibitors from over 20 countries and regions will be the protagonists of Ceramics China 2025, the world’s largest annual event for ceramic equipment and materials, scheduled to take place from 18 to 21 June at the Canton Fair Complex in Guangzhou. Once again, the exhibition will offer a wide range of advanced solutions for all ceramic sectors, including ceramic tiles and slabs, building ceramics, sanitaryware and tableware, high-tech and advanced ceramics, art and garden ceramics, as well as glass and stone products. Thanks to this variety, the organizers expect to attract around 100,000 visitors from over 80 regions and countries, surpassing the 81,858 visits recorded at the 2024 edition of the show.

The seven halls in Area A are strategically organized by product category: Halls 1.1 and 2.1 for decorative materials, raw and auxiliary materials, refractories, and wear-resistant materials; Halls 4.1 and 5.1 for digital and intelligent technologies, automation, abrasive tools, and spare parts; Hall 6.1 for tableware and sanitaryware equipment; Hall 8.1 for design studios, innovative processes, and advanced materials; Hall 3.1, reserved for foreign pavilions, international exhibitors, and well-known brands.

In particular, Hall 3.1 will host the Italian Pavilion , organized by ACIMAC and featuring a number of leading companies: Air Power, Certech, Egodesign, Fabbrica del Sale, Keran, LB Technology, Mectiles, Officine Smac, Origostyle, Poppi Clementino, Sacmi, SCF Colorificio Ceramico, Setec, Sicer, SITI B&T, Stylgraph, Tecnoferrari, and Tecnografica Ceramics China undoubtedly offers a unique opportunity to seize new market prospects in China and gain a comprehensive view of today’s Chinese ceramic industry. ◼

TURNING WASTE INTO VALUE USING POPPI’S FINE POWDER RECOVERY TECHNOLOGY

In the ceramic industry, optimising the production process means minimising waste, improving product quality and increasing sustainability. Every detail counts, such as the fine dust collected from post-spray-dryer filters. When managed effectively, this valuable resource can be transformed into a clear competitive advantage.

Thanks to innovative patented technology from Poppi Clementino SpA (Reggio Emilia), ceramic manufacturers can now automatically recover and reuse fine powder inside the spray dryer, eliminating waste while ensuring optimal process control. The system is designed for maximum efficiency, significantly improving ceramic production.

Despite a sharp decline in the building construction industry in Europe, the Geberit Group –one of the world’s largest producers of sanitaryware and bathroom solutions – reported a currency-adjusted increase in net sales of 2.5% in 2024. At CHF

If necessary, the fine powder can also be stored in a dedicated silo to be reused later with precise dosing. This brings clear benefits for ceramic manufacturers. In terms of energy and environmental sustainability, the system reduces waste while lowering energy and water consumption by avoiding a double transition to the liquid state. a rebuilding of inventories by wholesalers in the first half of the year, Geberit further strengthened its market position, supported by the strong development of various new products. Although European markets continued to suffer the most from the highly challenging conditions facing the sanitaryware industry, currency-adjusted net sales

in Europe increased by +1.9% in 2024. Above-average increases were achieved in Eastern Europe (+7.1%), Italy (+6.2%), Benelux (+3.8%) and Germany (+3.2%). Austria (+0.3%) also made slight gains, while net sales in Switzerland were in line with the level seen in the previous year (-0.1%). In contrast, declines were recorded in Western Europe (-2.6%) and

Northern Europe (-4.2%). Outside Europe, positive currency-adjusted increases were achieved in the Middle East/Africa (+17.1%), America (+3.0%) and the Far East/Pacific (+0.2%), where the decline in China was offset by strong growth in India.

Regarding the group’s three Business Units, currency-adjusted net sales increased by 4.8% in Installation and Flushing Systems, 1.3% in Piping Systems and 1.1% in Bathroom Systems.

Following the strong declines in the building construction industry experienced since mid-2022, demand is expected to stabilise as a whole during the course of 2025. In Europe, the number of building permits in the first nine months of 2024 was only slightly lower than in 2023 (-1%). However, in Germany, the Nordic countries and Austria – traditionally key markets for Geberit – permits fell by a total of 12%, suggesting a continued slight decline in the new construction segment.

LB EXPANDS ITS PRESENCE IN BRAZIL WITH DEXCO

LB Technology of Fiorano Modenese is one of the key technology suppliers for Brazilian group Dexco’s new factory in Botucatu (São Paulo), which is soon to begin production. The facility will manufacture ceramic slabs for the Ceusa and Portinari brands. For this project, the Italian company has supplied advanced technological solutions to optimise four large-format slab forming lines. These include Easy Color Boost, for the uniform colouring of spray-dried powders; Chipper, for precise dosing of flakes; and Naturae, a technology designed to replicate the veins and colours of marble and natural stone with exceptional quality. By adopting these cutting-edge technologies, Dexco aims to redefine the high-end porcelain

Outside Europe, a mixed market environment is expected in 2025. While demand in India and the Gulf region is expected to remain high, further declines are anticipated in China.

NEW RIEDHAMMER TWS KILN SUPPLIED TO DURAVIT CHINA

Duravit China installs a new Riedhammer tunnel kiln, completing its expansion plan to double production output at its Chongqing plant. Put into action in 2023, this plan has been applied to all production stages from slip preparation to casting, from robotized glazing to handling.

The new Riedhammer kiln, model TWS 135/360/90-G, is 135 metres long - with 3600 mm width and 900 mm useful loading height – and is conceived for production outputs of more than 86 tons per day (approx. 3 thousand pieces). On an annual basis, the increased production reaches a million pieces, thus completing the planned expansion.

As with all the latest generation Riedhammer solutions, the kiln is designed to maximize performances also from the point of view of energy consumption. This is done with the help of recycling systems, such as the exclusive EMS (energy management system) for pre-heating combustion air to 200 °C, and the air-water heat exchanger which uses excess hot air to produce hot water destined for other uses.

There are several other special features useful to improve the energy balance of the kiln and the factory. Among these are the fans provided with frequency converters, the exclusive “pulse firing” system in the pre-heating

BONGIOANNI LAUNCHES QUANTUM CARBIDE

Bongioanni is introducing Quantum Carbide, a next-generation tungsten carbide material set to transform the heavy clay industry. Thanks to its outstanding strength and durability, this ma-

zone, and the system for recovering excess hot air from the kiln and re-directing it to the drier, which can therefore operate on a totally «zero fuel» basis.

Next to the new kiln, Duravit has recently started up new glazing lines as well. All stages of the process are automated, and handling operations are carried out by LGV. As they leave the glazing lines, the pieces are loaded onto a conveyor belt and transferred to the kiln where the operator proceeds with car loading operations for a total of 109 cars per day

With completion of this final stage of the expansion project, SACMI reaffirms its valued partnership with Duravit, a multinational manufacturer of quality design sanitaryware, with whom it has carried out projects at all the Group’s main production plants around the world. In particular, this latest supply was a significant contribution to further improving the Chinese factory, already renowned around the globe for its high level of automation and 4.0 management of sanitaryware production flows.

Officine Smac of Fiorano Modenese closed 2024 on a positive note, once again achieving growth and replicating the strong sales performance of the previous year.

The company, which specialises in systems, equipment and automation for glazing ceramic tiles, bricks, roof tiles and other materials, has successfully navigated the downturn in the global ceramic market due to its ability to design and build fully customised plants. As a result, Smac has completed several commercially important and technically complex projects, demonstrating the know-how it has developed over more than 55 years. In the ceramic tile sector, the most dynamic markets for Smac last year were Italy, Turkey and Southeast Asia. Sacmi is continuing to expand its presence in sub-Saharan Africa with a new project in Benin, where the first greenfield facility for the production of ceramic floor and wall tiles has now gone into operation. The facility is owned by Afrikan Ceramic Solutions, part of the Equitane Group, which operates across several sectors in Africa, including textiles, pharmaceuticals and agri-food.

For this new factory, Afrikan Ceramic Solutions commissioned Sacmi to supply two entirely Italian-made PH 5200 presses and an ATI090 spray dryer. The presses are equipped with a full set of moulds from Sacmi Molds & Dies, allowing the company to produce around 10,000 square metres of porcelain stoneware per day in the popular 60x60 cm and 60x120 cm sizes.

The fourth edition of the forecast report for the global ceramic tile market, published last November by the MECS-Acimac Research Centre, analyses production and consumption trends for the period 2024-2028, both by macro-areas and for 91 individual countries. The 238-page report concludes with summary tables ranking 90 producer and 146 consumer countries based on projected volume changes over the five-year period. Unsurprisingly, India tops the list for both production and consumption growth, while China sits at the bottom of the ranking with a negative outlook.

METHODOLOGY

As in previous editions, Ceramic Tile Market Forecast Analysis. TRENDS 2024-2028 is based on econometric models developed by MECS, integrating multiple quantitative indicators, including GDP trends, industrial and construction investments, demographic and urbanisation dynamics and household spending capacity. The analysis also factors in the impact of public policies, consumption patterns, sustainability trends and the state of logistics and infrastructure. This methodology allows a reliable projection to be made of the average annual growth rate for tile production and consumption over the period 2024-2028, even in the midst of significant structural shifts and global uncertainty. Ongoing geopolitical crises and the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, coupled with potential policy shifts under a second Trump presidency, could reshape trade patterns and impact commercial relations with various countries and regions, including Europe.

WORLD CERAMIC TILE PRODUCTION

After a decidedly negative 2023 for the global ceramic tile industry (marked by a 5% drop in consumption and a 5.5% decline in production, equating to a loss of 1 billion square metres compared to 2022 and nearly 3 billion sqm less than in 2021), MECS forecasts a gradual recovery over the five-year period from 2024 to 2028. However, this rebound will not be sufficient to return to the record levels seen in 2021.

KEY EMERGING PLAYERS

While Africa and South America will be the key regions to watch in terms of market growth, the leading players in the global ceramic industry are unlikely to change significantly. However, the MECS report highlights the emergence of new dynamic markets, particularly in Africa and Asia. Countries such as Bangladesh, Kenya and Kazakhstan are rapidly expanding their production, with annual double-digit growth projected until 2028. On the consumption side, these nations, along with Cameroon and Uganda, are also expected to see much faster growth in demand than global averages.

OUTLOOK FOR THE FAR EAST

The Far East is the geographical macro-area with the most positive economic growth prospects for the next few years. Between 2024 and 2028, the region’s overall GDP is projected to grow at an average annual rate of 4.3%, while investment in residential and non-residential construction is expected to rise by 3% annually. In 2028, the Far East will continue to account for 70% of global construction investment.

However, the MECS forecast report predicts more moderate growth for the ceramic industry and market in this macro-area. Tile production is projected to increase from 10.8 billion sqm in 2023 to 11.6 billion sqm in 2028 (average annual growth rate of

In China, the real estate crisis may lead to a further decline in domestic tile consumption (5,656 million sqm in 2028, an average annual contraction of 1.6%), with production volumes also expected to fall (6,441 million sqm, an annual decline of 0.9%). As a result, China’s share of global tile production will drop to 36%. In contrast, India will maintain its rapid and sustained growth trajectory and will be the country with the biggest increase in production volumes by 2028. Output is expected to grow by 813 million sqm compared to 2023, bringing total production to 3,263 million sqm, with an average annual growth rate of 5.9% and a global market share of 18%. Domestic tile consumption will rise even more rapidly (CAGR +7.8% from 2024 to 2028), reaching 2,478 million sqm in 2028 (an increase of 778 million sqm compared to 2023). The Indian ceramic market’s expansion will be driven by a robust national economic performance, with GDP projected to grow by 6.6% annually over the next five years, alongside steady investment in construction, expected to increase by 3.7% per year through 2028. However, the ceramic industry in the Far East is not limited to these two giants. Vietnam and Indonesia, which will rank as the fourth- and seventh-largest ceramic tile producers worldwide by 2028, also merit attention.

EUROPE POISED FOR GRADUAL RECOVERY

Over the five-year period 2024 to 2028, the MECS forecast report points to a two-speed growth trend for the European ceramic industry, with the European Union experiencing lower annual growth rates than non-EU European countries. This disparity reflects the differing economic forecasts made by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which projects average annual GDP growth rates of 1.5% for the EU and 2.3% for non-EU Europe over the period.

Ceramic tile consumption in the EU is expected to increase from 831 million sqm in 2023 to 907 million sqm in 2028 (average annual growth rate of 1.8%). After two consecutive years of decline, a slight recovery is anticipated in 2024-2025, driven more by renovations than by new construction. The strongest consumption growth is expected in Poland, Spain, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria, while Italy, France and Germany are likely to experience more challenging market conditions.

In non-EU European countries, ceramic tile production is projected to increase from 615 million sqm in 2023 to 728 million sqm in 2028, with an average annual growth rate of 3.4%, a significant acceleration compared to the +0.8% per year recorded between 2014 and 2023. Tile consumption is also expected to rise at an average annual rate of 3.0%, from 636 million sqm in 2023 to 737 million sqm in 2028, again an improvement over the 1.7% average annual growth of the previous decade. However, it is important to note that this region has experienced two years of sharp contraction, largely due to the instability caused by the war in Ukraine. The recovery will be driven primarily by Turkey and Russia, the area’s two largest ceramic tile producers. According to MECS forecasts, Turkish production is expected to reach 433 million sqm in 2028 (average annual growth rate of +3.1%), while Russian production will grow to 208 million sqm (annual growth rate of +3.2%).

POSITIVE OUTLOOK IN NORTH AMERICA

The MECS forecast for North America (NAFTA region consisting of the United States, Canada and Mexico) estimates an increase in tile production from 349 million sqm in 2023 to 403 million sqm in 2028 (CAGR +2.9%). Tile consumption is also expected to rise over the same period from 551 million sqm to 616 million sqm (CAGR +2.2%). For the five-year period 2024-2028, MECS forecasts higher average annual growth rates for both production and consumption compared to the decade 2014-2023. Mexico will play a key role in driving both production and demand. The country’s tile production is expected to reach 305 million sqm by 2028 (CAGR +2.9%), accounting for three-quarters of North America’s total output, while domestic consumption will reach 302 million sqm (CAGR +3.5%).

The ceramic tile industry and market in the United States are likewise poised for growth. Production is projected to reach 97 million sqm by 2028 (CAGR +3.1%), while domestic consumption will grow from 264 million sqm in 2023 to 283 million sqm in 2028 (CAGR +1.4%). More than two-thirds of US tile consumption will continue to be met by imports.

SOUTH AMERICA: GROWTH DRIVEN BY DEMAND

According to the MECS Research Centre’s forecast for the main countries in Latin America from 2024 to 2028, the region’s ceramic industry will maintain a stable share of global tile production at 7.2%, while strengthening its position as a major consumer market.

On the demand side, the South American market is poised for even stronger growth, with tile consumption projected to rise by 4.8% annually, from 1.22 billion sqm in 2023 to 1.54 billion sqm in 2028, an increase of 321 million sqm over the fiveyear period. Once again, Brazil will play a pivotal role, with domestic demand expected to reach 896 million sqm (an average annual increase of +5.2%).

This optimistic scenario marks a significant shift from the previous decade, when demand stagnated (CAGR of -1.7% from 2014 to 2023). The new growth cycle is driven by favourable macroeconomic conditions, with regional GDP projected to expand by 2.6% annually until 2028. Additionally, the construction sector is expected to benefit from public incentives and funding for infrastructure and innovation, factors that are likely to drive investment at an average annual rate of 2.3% over the fiveyear period.

AFRICA: SUSTAINED GROWTH IN PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION

Africa remains the fastest-growing macro-area within the global ceramic industry, driven by a rapidly evolving economy and a significant infrastructure gap compared to developed nations. Following a decade of extraordinary expansion with average annual growth rates of 11% in tile production and 6.3% in consumption, the latest MECS analysis confirms that the continent will continue its upward trajectory, albeit with slightly more moderate growth. For the period 2024-2028, MECS forecasts an average annual increase of 5.6% in tile production (from 1.18 billion sqm in 2024 to 1.55 billion sqm in 2028). Consumption is expected to grow at an annual rate of 6%, reaching 1.97 billion sqm by 2028, an increase of 500 million sqm compared to 2023, equivalent to 11.1% of global tile consumption. This expansion is being driven not only by general economic growth, with GDP expected to rise by 4.1% annually through 2028, but also by the booming tourism industry and the surge in investments in infrastructure and hospitality. These factors are fuelling a significant acceleration in construction activity (projected by MECS to grow at an average annual rate of 2.5%), in turn driving up demand for ceramic tiles. As for production, a number of new players including Benin, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire and Mozambique are emerging alongside the existing major producer countries such as Egypt, Algeria, South Africa, Nigeria and Ghana. These will help to strengthen Africa’s ceramic tile manufacturing base, although part of the continent’s demand will continue to be met by imports. ◼

Ceramic Tile Exports 2024

India’s ceramic tile exports saw a sharp downturn in 2024, marking the end of a decade-long phase of rapid global expansion that was interrupted only in 2022. This period of growth peaked in 2023, when exports reached a record 589.5 million sqm (+40% on 2022), amounting to an average annual increase of 21.5% between 2014 and 2023. With these volumes and growth rates, India – now the world’s second largest tile exporter – has for several years been subject to increased scrutiny in the global ceramic tile market, particularly due to the fact that it has the lowest average selling prices among all major exporter countries. So where did India’s export capacity change in 2024 and by how much?

A detailed picture of the situation is provided by the second edition of “Indian Ceramic Tile Exports 2024” , a report published in April by the MECS/Acimac Research Centre Based on customs and commercial data, the study analyses Indian tile exports by volume, value and average price over the decade from 2015 to 2024, broken down by macro region and the 135 countries of export. As in the first edition in 2023, the report also provides an analysis focusing solely on exports of porcelain stoneware. The report concludes with a chapter on the top Indian exporters over the period 20232024 (all based in the Morbi ceramic district in Gujarat) and their performance in key international markets.

In 2024, Indian ceramic tile exports declined in volume to 525.3 million sqm, down 10.9% on 2023 , or 64 million sqm less than the previous year. Sales revenue followed a similar trend, falling by 11.2% to around €2 billion (from €2.25 billion in 2023).

Despite the downturn, India remained the world’s second-largest exporter of ceramic tiles, behind China with 600 million sqm in 2024.

Asian markets continued to absorb the largest share of Indian exports, at 216.4 million sqm (-13.3%), equal to 41.2% of total volumes in 2024. Revenues from sales in Asia fell to €786.2 million (-12.8%).

Sales also declined in other major geographical areas. Exports to Africa amounted to 98.4 million sqm (-18.5%), with reve-

nues down by 20.8% to €274.5 million. In North America and Mexico, volumes fell by 7.1% to 62.2 million sqm, while turnover dropped to €271.1 million (-8.9%). Shipments to the European Union declined to 54.2 million sqm (-8.2%), with revenues of €236.7 million (-13.3%), while exports to other European countries totalled 50.3 million sqm, down 7.5% in volume and 6.3% in value.

The only positive performance was in Latin America, where Indian exports grew by 14% to 39.4 million sqm, generating revenues of €152 million (+11.3%).

AVERAGE PRICE REMAINS UNCHANGED

The average export price of Indian tiles remained stable in 2024 at €3.8/sqm , in line with 2023, with no major changes across destination regions. Price differences between regions, however, remained significant, ranging from €2.8/sqm in Africa to €4.4/sqm in North America and the EU and as high as €5.4/sqm in non-EU European countries. Over the past decade, average export prices held steady at €3.1-3.2/sqm until 2021, then peaked at €4.2/sqm in 2022 and have since fallen back to €3.8/sqm in the last two years.

EXPORTS RISE IN 55 COUNTRIES

India exported tiles to 135 countries in 2024, with exports declining in 80 of these countries and continuing to grow in 55. The ranking of India’s top-10 export destinations saw numerous changes in 2024. The UAE rose to first place with 36.8 million sqm (+7.8%), overtaking the United States (34.3 million sqm, -7.1%). Iraq remained steady in third place, while Russia climbed to fourth thanks to a 22.4% increase in volumes (28.1 million sqm).

The other top-10 countries were Kuwait (+2.3%), Mexico (-8.8%), Oman (-18.3%), Thailand (-11.3%), Israel (-37.1%) and the United Kingdom (+2.8%).

One of the most significant declines was in Saudi Arabia (now ranked 17th), where Indian exports dropped to 9.5 million sqm, down 46.8% on a 2023 figure that had already fallen by 26%.

The highest average prices in 2024 were recorded for exports to Turkey (€11.1/sqm) and the UK (€7.1/sqm), while the lowest were in several African countries (€2/sqm).

PORCELAIN TILE EXPORTS

Porcelain stoneware continued to dominate Indian tile exports in 2024, accounting for over 75% of the total (up from 72% in 2023).

This product also performed better in foreign markets than other types of ceramic surfaces and experienced only a limited decline in sales. Export volumes totalled 403 million sqm (4.8% down on the 423 million sqm of 2023), generating €1.68 billion in revenue (-7.5%) , equivalent to 84% of total tile export turnover. The average price dropped slightly from €4.3 to €4.2/sqm

The main export markets for Indian porcelain were the UAE (+21.5%), Russia (+23%), the US, Mexico and Iraq. In many markets, porcelain accounted for more than 90% of India’s tile exports, with peaks of 98% in Russia and 100% in Egypt.

THE TOP 30 INDIAN EXPORTERS

As in the 2023 edition, the MECS report also includes an interesting in-depth look at the 30 largest Indian tile exporters ranked by export revenues in 2023-2024. As mentioned, all of these companies are based in the Morbi ceramic district.

Icon Granito again topped the ranking in 2024 with export revenues of €56 million, followed by Italica Granito, Lavish Granito, Itaca Ceramic and Laxveer Ceramic , all with export revenues between €35 million and €42 million. For all 30 companies, the top three export markets in 2024 are also listed, confirming – as in the previous year – the wide variety of destination markets served.

The report also analyses the market shares held by the top five Indian exporters in each of the country’s key foreign markets, revealing the high level of competition between the top Indian players. ◼

In 2024, the downward trend in Chinese ceramic tile exports continued, marking a steady and ongoing contraction for over a decade, with the only interruption to this negative trajectory occurring in 2023. After a 6% increase two years ago, export volumes from the Asian giant fell by 2.5% in 2024, decreasing from 615 to 600 million square meters . Despite this decline, China remains the world’s largest tile exporter , partly due to the sharper contraction of its main competitor – India – whose exports fell to 525 million square meters last year (-11%).

OVER 70% OF TILES SOLD IN ASIA

Asia’s growing importance in China’s foreign tile sales is increasingly evident. In 2024, Asia (including the Middle East) absorbed 442.5 million square meters of Chinese tiles, up 0.9% from 2023, accounting for nearly 74% of total exports (compared to just 52% a decade ago). Fourteen of the top 20 export markets for Chinese ceramic tiles are in Asia, including the top 5: the Philippines, Indonesia, South Korea, Malaysia, and Thailand.

Exports to Latin America , China’s second-largest export region for tiles, declined last year to 66 million square meters (-11%). Among the main markets – Peru, Chile, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic – only Colombia saw an increase in sales.

The decade-long decline in Chinese exports to Africa - largely due to the parallel rise in local Chinese-owned production facilities across the continent - also deepened in 2024. Sales dropped to 34 million square meters (-29%), primarily shipped to Senegal, Kenya, Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria, and South Africa.

On the other hand, Chinese tiles gained ground in Oceania . In 2024, exports to the region rose to 37.6 million square meters (+10.6% vs. 2023), of which 33 million square meters (+9.4%) were sold in Australia – still China’s sixth-largest export market, where it holds an estimated 75% market share. Since the introduction of U.S. anti-dumping duties in 2020, Chinese presence in North America has been almost entirely limited to Canada, China’s 16th largest foreign market. In 2024, exports to Canada grew by 9% to 9 million square meters. An additional 3 million square meters were exported to Mexico and the United States, both markets in decline. Finally, Europe (including both EU and non-EU countries), now a marginal destination for Chinese ceramic tiles, saw a further decrease in 2024 to 8 million square meters.

OVER 80% OF EXPORTS CONCENTRATED IN TOP 20 MARKETS

A more detailed analysis of China’s tile export destinations reveals some noteworthy trends.

First, export sales are highly concentrated: in 2024, out of roughly 200 countries that imported Chinese tiles, the top 20 markets accounted for 82.6% of total export volumes (or 81% excluding Hong Kong, a special administrative region), amounting to 496 out of 600 million square meters. Another 33 countries imported between 1 and 5 million square meters, while all others remained below 1 million.

The downturn, often substantial, affected nearly all major markets, including those that saw growth in export volumes.

The only exceptions were Australia, which recorded a 2.6% increase in export value (to €185 million), and Kazakhstan, up 28.6% to €31 million. Average selling prices declined noticeably and broadly, with the sole exception of Indonesia, where prices held steady at €3.2 per square meter. ◼

ers to recoup their initial investments. The machinery manufacturers’ focus on energy savings brings further cost benefits. Latest-generation kilns and dryers are increasingly energy efficient and are designed to run not only on natural gas but also on alternative energy sources. Waste recovery and process optimisation also allow customers to make significant new savings. This level of attention is unmatched anywhere in the world, largely due to the strict environmental regulations imposed on the Italian ceramic producers, who were our very first customers.

CWR: Versatility is another related aspect.

P. LAMBERTI: That’s right, an Italian-built line can be adapted easily and rapidly to the many different needs of the market, so a factory equipped with Italian technology is highly flexible in terms of product size, line configuration and production batches. This is a particularly important aspect given the recent trend in the ceramic industry towards smaller batch sizes. Technologies developed in other countries are unable to deliver the same levels of flexibility.

CWR: What are the biggest difficulties faced by Italian companies in world markets?

P. LAMBERTI: It’s difficult to generalise as each situation would need to be assessed on a case-by-case basis. However, one of our biggest difficulties is making companies around the world aware of the advantages of Italian technology. For example, it is essential to get across the message that Italian raw materials preparation machines have set new standards for both wet and dry grinding, that Italy maintains a leadership position in the field of large slab forming, and that Italian companies were the first to develop digital decoration and special visual and tactile effects on tiles. As I mentioned earlier, our machines are also highly sustainable in terms of the environment, reducing consumption and waste.

CWR: You should be pleased that one out of every two machines currently installed anywhere the world was made in Italy.

P. LAMBERTI: That’s true, but as an entrepreneur, I can’t allow myself the luxury of seeing the glass half-full. I have to look at the half-empty part and consider it as new terrain to conquer. In any case, it’s crucial that we remain vigilant. The highly volatile economic landscape and intensifying competition, particularly from China, pose significant threats to our leadership position. ◼

WORLD SANITARYWARE EXPORTS AND IMPORTS 全球卫生洁具进出口概况

In the period 2010-2023, global import/export flows of ceramic sanitaryware grew by 59.8% from 2.16 million to 3.45 million tonnes, corresponding to a compound annual growth rate of 4%. Following more than a decade of almost uninterrupted growth (the pandemic year 2020 saw the only contraction between 2010 and 2021), global exports of ceramic sanitaryware experienced a second consecutive year of decline in 2023, falling by 5.8% compared to 2022. The downward trend was observed in virtually all areas of production with the sole exception of the NAFTA region, which was sustained by the strong growth of Mexican exports.

Asia remained the world’s largest sanitaryware exporter, increasing its share of global exports to 67.6% despite a 4.5% fall to 2.33 million tonnes in 2023. This was a combined result of contractions in China and Thailand, partially offset by higher exports from India, Vietnam and Iran.

Exports from the European Union, the world’s second largest exporter, also fell by 16.6% to 433,000 tonnes. The three largest exporting countries in the region – Poland, Germany and Portugal, which alone account for half of EU exports – all recorded declines of around 16%.

Following the negative performance in 2022, North America (NAFTA) resumed its growth in exports in 2023 with a total of 336,000 tonnes (+18.4%), almost entirely from Mexico (302,000 tonnes, +20%).

Exports from non-EU European countries also experienced a severe contraction (-21.4% to 199,000 tonnes), with Turkey down 17.7% (153,000 tonnes), followed by South America (69,000 tonnes, -18%) and Africa, which remained stable at around 80,000 tonnes.

A glance at the thirteen-year period as a whole provides a clear picture of how exports have evolved in each area and in particular reveals the growth of Asia, whose exports have more than doubled from 1.1 million to 2.3 million tonnes (CAGR 2023/2010 +6.7%), matching the result achieved in 2019. Asia’s percentage share of global exports has risen from 51% in 2010 to the current figure of 67.6%, winning shares from almost all the other regions.

By contrast, the EU’s exports experienced a decline during the period in question (CAGR -1.5%), with their share of world trade falling from 24.2% to 12.6%. The NAFTA region’s share fell from 12.4% to 9.7% despite overall 25% growth in exports since 2010.

South America, which in 2010 accounted for 4.6% of world exports, saw its share drop to 2%, while volumes remained stable over the 13-year period. The only exceptions were non-EU European countries and Africa. with 5.5% growth to reach 265,000 tonnes. Next came Turkey, Poland, Thailand, Germany and Portugal, all with declines of between 16% and 18%. Vietnam and Iran completed the top 10 with 3.5% and 1.5% increases compared to 2022, respectively. Overall, the 10 largest sanitaryware exporter countries accounted for 85% of global exports.

An analysis of 2023 imports to the various continents not only confirms Asia and North America as the two regions accounting for the majority of sanitaryware imports but also shows that they have relatively similar levels of imported volumes: Asia 1 million tonnes (29% of global imports, down 10% on 2022); North America 931,000 tonnes (27% of global imports, -5.9% on 2022).Trailing at a distance, the EU accounted for 20.5% of global imports with 709,000 tonnes (-8% on 2022).

The remaining 23% of world imports were divided between Africa, South America, non-EU European countries and Oceania.

The 2023 ranking of the top 10 sanitaryware importing countries saw a number of changes in position compared to the previous year, as well as the exit of Vietnam and the return of Italy. Overall, the ten largest sanitaryware importers accounted for 47.8% of global sanitaryware imports (1.65 million tonnes).

In 2023, the United States was once again the world’s largest sanitaryware importer with 759,000 tonnes (8.7% down on 2022). It retained a strong lead over all other importing countries with 22% of world imports, as well as almost all (82%) of imports to the NAFTA region. This marked the continuation of a longstanding tradition considering that in 2010 the USA imported more than 500,000 tonnes, 23% of world imports.

France climbed to second place with imports of almost 123,000 tonnes (-5.6% over 2021), overtaking Germany, whose imports fell by 20.5% to 119,000 tonnes. Next came the UK (113,000 tonnes, +1.2%), followed by Canada, Spain, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Italy and the Philippines. Germany was the only country to rank among both the top 10 exporters and the top 10 importers of sanitaryware, with higher import than export volumes.

One final point of interest is the analysis of the main export destinations with respect to the geographical areas of production. Four out of seven areas sell the vast majority of their exports within their own geographical regions or continents: 96.5% of NAFTA area exports (mainly from Mexico) remain in North America, which essentially means the USA; 84% of South American exports remain in Latin America; 78% of EU exports are sold in EU markets and 64% of Oceania’s exports remain in Oceania. At the other extreme, 83% of exports from non-EU Europe are sold in other regions, particularly the EU (Turkey’s largest export market). Similarly, 77% of African exports are sold outside Africa and 60% of Asian exports are shipped outside the Asian continent, driven by China’s ability to sell its products in almost all areas of the world. ◼

Villeroy & Boch posted record-breaking results in 2024 including revenues of €1.42 billion (+57.6% compared to 2023). This growth was primarily due to the acquisition of Ideal Standard in March 2024, which enabled the Mettlach-based Group to strengthen its global presence and expand its product portfolio. The company also improved its operating EBIT by 10% from €88.7 million to €97.6 million.

The integration of Ideal Standard was the overall focus of the Group’s activities in 2024, which concentrated on developing a joint strategy and an optimised and integrated organisational structure. “With the integration of Ideal Standard, we’ve created a new company that has successfully positioned itself on the market under the umbrella of the Villeroy & Boch Group with two strong brands, clearly defined strategies for growth and an international organisation,” commented CEO Gabi Schupp “Ideal Standard complements Villeroy & Boch’s business model. All assumptions regarding the complementary strengths in terms of product portfolio, sales channels and regional presence have been confirmed and increased the Group’s competitiveness.”

THE BATHROOM & WELLNESS DIVISION SURPASSES €1 BILLION

With the integration of Ideal Standard, the Bathroom & Wellness Division generated revenues of €1,098.9 million (89.7% up on 2023). Ideal Standard companies contributed revenue of €512.1 million from 1 March 2024 onwards. The results are notable even when adjusting for acquisitions. Despite the continued subdued development of the construction sector, Villeroy & Boch managed to slightly exceed the previous year’s sales level. The Bathroom & Wellness Division generated an operating profit (EBIT) of €65.2 million in 2024, up €7.9 million or 13.8% over the previous year.

In 2024, the new Villeroy & Boch Group doubled its revenues outside Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

DINING & LIFESTYLE DIVISION REMAINS STABLE

Despite sluggish consumer demand, the revenue of the Dining & Lifestyle Division remained stable in 2024 at €319.3 million. While sales through brick-and-mortar stores declined (except for the Group-owned retail shops, which remained stable), the project business for hotels and restaurants and e-commerce delivered positive performances.

The division’s operating EBIT reached €32.4 million (+3.2% compared to 2023).

INVESTMENTS AND OUTLOOK

In the 2024 financial year, the Villeroy & Boch Group invested a total of €58.3 million in tangible and intangible assets. The focus of investment was on the modernisation and auto-

With productivity rates as high as 12 linear metres per minute, these machines can achieve outputs of more than 30,000 sqm per day and widths even up to 200 cm fired, while maintaining the highest levels of efficiency in the market (specific consumption of just 0.04 kWh/sqm during compaction). They generate very low levels of waste regardless of product size, with the potential to recycle all waste back into the process. Furthermore, they require more than 90% less hydraulic oil compared to conventional or discontinuous presses.

The Sacmi digital factory ensures greater process control and fewer unexpected events. Sustainability is also key in the Hybrid raw material preparation technology launched by LB at Tecna 2022.

This innovative hybrid solution involves initial dry milling of raw materials in cylindrical alumina ball mills equipped with dynamic separators (the method that has been used to mill high-value materials for years).

The resultant ground material is then granulated with granulators specially developed to adapt to the specific characteristics of large ceramic slab production and traditional presses for spraydried powder.

To meet the quality standards set for the new granulate, LB has invested heavily in R&D with funding from the Italian Ministry of Economic Development. This initiative, carried out in collaboration with the CNR-ISSMC Institute of Science, Technology and Sustainability for the Development of Ceramic Materials in Faenza, led to the construction of a raw material treatment and granulation plant.

During 2024 and early 2025, two large Projects have been finalized, with Customers located in Europe and China respectively. Those successes confirm that the market has gradually acknowledged the technical advantages of the Hybrid Solution and the huge economical benefits associated to it. Both Projects will be delivered at the beginning of 2026.

THE EVOLUTION OF THE THROUGH-VEIN EFFECT

Optimizing the aesthetics of full-body decorated tiles and other products, in particular large slabs for worktops and countertops, is one of the main goals of LB’s longstanding technological research. This was highlighted at the recent Tecna 2024 in Rimini, where the company presented two new outstanding solutions.

NATURAE, THE EVOLUTION OF THE THROUGH-VEIN EFFECT

Naturae technology was developed with the aim of creating through-body aesthetic effects – such as veins and grains – that enhance the ceramic body and establish porcelain stoneware slabs as a viable and cost-effective alternative to marble and natural stone. This technology responds to the ceramic market’s demand for slabs that authentically replicate the aesthetic effects typical of natural stone, such as veins of different sizes, angles and appearances, through the entire thickness. Naturae is a feeder for large slab forming lines capable of creating natural effects by depositing different materials such as body-coloured spray-dried powders, flakes and other materials.

The human-machine interface allows the operator to develop the desired designs in a controlled and random loading mode, including through the acquisition of a graphic file.

“The research that led to the development of Naturae began in 2021 with the aim of overcoming the limitations of the previous Naturtech solution, which operated only with powders and not with flakes and was consequently less capable of creating effects and veins,” explains the sales director of LB’s ceramic division Mirco Corbelli

“To complete the research project we collaborated with a major Spanish porcelain tile manufacturer. The company installed the machine in late 2022 together with a technology tower and LB’s tried-and-tested powder colouring technology Freestile. The plant was successfully started up in 2023 and the first products launched a few months later.”

MULTIPURPOSE, VERSATILE PRODUCTION OF HI-TECH MATERIALS

Another feeder for slab forming lines showcased by LB at Tecna 2024 is Multipurpose, a versatile and compact technological solution ideal for ceramic companies wishing to optimize production and obtain multiple, exclusive and high-quality aesthetic effects by applying spray-dried and micronised powders and flakes. Its main characteristic is the fact that a single Multipurpose feeder is able to produce multiple types of effects that previously required the use of different kits. In order to reduce the space required to install each individual kit and eliminate the need for replacement during product changes, a fully automated and modular solution was developed combining the various kits (Rolltech, Flaketech, Chipper) used to create double-loaded products with unique and natural aesthetic effects.

Multipurpose is particularly suitable for the production of durable hi-tech materials.

It is an innovative and cost-effective solution for the production of double-loaded slabs and other products that also ensures ease of use and compatibility with different shaping technologies. The first machine to be built is currently at an advanced stage of industrial testing. ◼

In one of the very first reports presented by System Ceramics at the start of its journey toward ceramic process digitalisation, now many years ago, we listed numerous hypothetical benefits that digital technology could bring to ceramic production. Rereading that list today, we find that every prediction has come true, a rare occurrence that highlights the undeniable success of digitalising ceramic production. System Ceramics’ own experience in this field has been equally successful, marked by continuous technological progress through close collaboration with customers and ink producers. The company has participated in numerous R&D projects without excluding any type of ink. These efforts culminated in the development of water-based inks, a major breakthrough that became a reality with the first production lines launching in 2024. This strong synergy among all ceramic industry players, combined with seamless integration across System Ceramics’ multidisciplinary R&D teams (covering electrical, chemical, physical, mechanical and software engineering), has contributed significantly to the company’s success. THE NEW INFINITY SKY PLATFORM

Continuing its tradition of innovation, System Ceramics unveiled a preview of its new project, Infinity Sky , at Tecna 2024, with the new digital decoration platform due to be commercially available by the end of this year. Building on the success of the Infinity printer – already known for its exceptional quality – Infinity Sky incorporates several key improvements specifically requested by customers and ink manufacturers.

To ensure maximum flexibility, Infinity Sky can accommodate up to 16 positions for loading colours and materials. Each of these 16 bars is independently configurable and features a pneumatic lifting system, which hermetically seals any unused bar for enhanced protection. The machine also features an advanced automatic maintenance system. When the bars are in standby mode, they remain in a dynamic rather than static state to ensure optimal readiness for use. Since powders have their own unique rheology, the printhead was specially modified to ensure optimal fluidisation and application. The key advantage of this method is its precision. FULL DIGITAL

The final step towards fully digital ceramic decoration is digital glazing, a concept that has been discussed for years and is now nearing practical implementation. However, digital glazing is currently limited to certain specialised production lines and predominantly uses submicron materials. This means there is still considerable room for technological innovation and the development of new machines in this field.

System Ceramics’ research efforts aim to apply materials with larger particle sizes – certainly greater than a micron – to enhance the material’s body and deliver the improved mechanical strength and performance characteristics associated with larger particle sizes.

Another important goal is to increase discharge capacity. Current digital machines are able to deposit up to 100 grams per square metre at speeds of around 20 m/minute, whereas the next step will involve selectively depositing even larger quantities for both full-field applications and digital designs, allowing for the creation of micro and macrostructures directly on ceramic surfaces. ◼

AUTOMATED PRODUCTION AND NEW TECHNOLOGIES FOR EASTERN EUROPE

In 2021, Marcheluzzo signed a contract with a major Eastern European brick producer to revamp a portion of a production line devoted to solid and lightened clay bricks in 250x120x65/88 mm sizes.

The project required a high degree of cooperation between the two companies’ technical teams to overcome the difficulties associated with installing modern technology in a manually operated, non-automated plant.

Marcheluzzo was tasked with upgrading the section of the plant from post-drying onwards with automated systems for kiln car loading, a new tunnel kiln and a complete product packaging line on pallets.

THE LINE REVAMPING PROJECT

The first step in the project focused on dried brick unloading from the dryer cars. For this stage, a Fanuc robot was introduced to simultaneously pick up two layers of bricks and convey them to the kiln.

This stage proved quite challenging for Marcheluzzo’s engineers as the manual brick positioning operation caused frequent inaccuracies and inconsistencies in the loading geometry.

Layer preparation is performed by a toothed belt handling system and suitably sized conveyor belts, allowing a portion of the bricks to be diverted to a dedicated surface colouring area.

The layers are then loaded onto the kiln car by a second robot with the same characteristics as the first, allowing a single line of robots to efficiently form the kiln car load using a special gripper.

KILN AUTOMATION

The tunnel kiln supplied by Marcheluzzo is sized to ensure a streamlined, optimal firing process and is suitably equipped to achieve the required rising/falling temperature gradient according to the characteristics of the raw material, the shape of the brick packs and the cycle speed. This in turn ensures the required performance in terms of quality.

To ensure uniform preheating of the material, four high-pressure preheating and recycling units were installed between the 200°C and 400°C zones. The incoming air pressure at the various intake points ensures effective heat exchange due to the sudden increase in air volume, resulting in excellent temperature uniformity across the entire kiln width.

Given the type of product being fired, it was also essential to ensure effective pre-heating before entering the firing zone. For this purpose, eight high-speed lateral burners were installed to supply extra heat and create turbulence in the pre-fire stage, preparing the product to withstand the higher temperatures without experiencing thermal shock.

The firing zone itself consists of 8 ceiling-mounted units, each with 11 independent firing points. An air fan with suitable flow rate and operating pressure for each unit ensures the correct downward gas thrust, guaranteeing good temperature uniformity over the entire kiln width.

The kiln maintains an optimal balance between the gas and air volumes to ensure correct firing and flame control, which in turn helps prevent the risk of abnormal product shrinkage during the firing process.

After the firing stage, the kiln features a cooling zone divided into two distinct sections. In the first section, the products are cooled rapidly by means of units specially designed

to minimise the risk of thermal shock. In the second section, the products are allowed to cool naturally to a certain temperature, at which point they undergo a further controlled low-temperature cooling phase.

Once fired, the bricks are conveyed to an area where they are offloaded by a robot using a dedicated gripper. A system of toothed belts and conveyor belts then forms the layers of the pack ready for shipment.

CONCLUSIONS

Throughout the project, Marcheluzzo maintained a respectful approach to the existing production conditions. As always, it demonstrated its unique expertise in revamping production lines and its ability to upgrade and revitalise obsolete plants that were no longer fit for purpose. The integration of automated solutions has enabled the company to abandon manual operation in favour of a more flexible and efficient manufacturing approach. ◼

Officine Smac, a manufacturer of machinery and equipment for the ceramic and brick industries with a history dating back 55 years, is presenting a range of technologies for glazing large ceramic surfaces and slabs.

• Versatile / Plus Airless System

During glazing with a single-motor movable airless system, tiles may display small defects such as “M” or “W” type shadows in the event of very large sizes or high-speed production. To solve this problem, Smac is presenting its latest-generation movable airless system with independent movements. Ideal for application on ceramic slabs and for high-speed production lines, Versatile / Plus features independent movement of each upper spray gun complete with high-speed motors, linear axes and an independent support frame, allowing for speeds of up to 150 strokes per minute. It is available for systems of 4, 6 and 8 spray guns fed by a high-pressure airless pump. The sys-

tems are equipped with a control panel with a large touchscreen HMI for production recipe setting and a stainless steel spraying booth with a standard or deep bottom collecting tank complete with side doors, overspray nets and belt supports. Available for tile sizes up to 2200 mm.

The Versatile system can be equipped with an automatic booth washing device and automatic spray nozzle wear control device to make the glazing station completely autonomous and integrated with the production plant thanks to the latest-generation Industry 4.0 technology.

• DSR powder grit application machine

Ceramic tile manufacturers have recently been re-evaluating final powder and grit application for the purpose of reducing water consumption, protecting the tile body and ensuring more uniform surface application. Smac is presenting its DSR machine model, which stands out for its simplicity of use, innovative feeding system and re-

duced overall dimensions. With a width of just 650 mm, DSR is easy to install without the need to make mechanical alterations to existing glazing lines. It allows for full-field applications ranging from just a few grams of material up to high-quantity coverages suitable for subsequent lapping operations, while maintaining constant and uniform coverage on tiles and slabs with widths of up to 2200 mm. The machine is managed entirely automatically by means of an electrical panel with a PLC and programming keyboard. DSR can be equipped with a separate CF feeding container to increase production runtime. In case of production with digital glue printing, the system can be completed with the model CGA suction system equipped with an automatic sieving and pneumatic recirculation device.

• Reverso model engobe application machine

Application of engobe onto the back of the tile avoids contamination caused by direct contact between tiles and the ceramic rollers in the kiln during

firing. Incorrect or non-uniform application may cause serious damage, including rapid deterioration of the ceramic rollers, deformation of tile flatness and undesirable accumulation of tiles inside the kiln.

Standard machines with movable smooth sleeves are not recommended for large size ceramic slabs because the weight of the slabs may prevent the sleeves from rotating and result in non-uniform application. Thanks to the laser-engraved silicone roller application system, Reverso ensures perfect and uniform engobe application on the rear face of the tiles with the possibility of controlled weights. It also avoids product wastage, does not contaminate the tile edges and allows logos and other designs to be printed. Available for widths of up to 2200 mm.
