Three Mile Beach
Gwithian Towans
WELCOME
Welcome to Three Mile Beach, a huge thank you for choosing to stay with us.
We were totally smitten with Gwithian the moment our kitesurfing friend Steph brought us down here over a decade ago. To this day, we are still blown away by Gwithian’s wild and natural beauty. We’ve come to love more than just the golden sands, watching waves crash over the lighthouse & spotting seals in the surf.
Gwithian’s timeless charm and unique magic imbues a contented feeling of wanton abandon and takes us back to the carefree days of our youth.
At night, with so little light or noise pollution, it’s an enchanting place to be. The stars are
wonderfully bright, a moonlit stroll down to the sea provides something very unforgettable.
We love traipsing over the sandy dunes & calling in at the Red River Inn or leisurely taking drinks and some provisions down to the beach to enjoy the ridiculously stunning sunsets.
This book is designed to help you get the most from your stay here and is built on many fun years of adventures with friends and family. Of course, we’d love to hear all about your experiences and recommendations in return.
We hope you enjoy this little corner of Cornish paradise as much as we do.
Cornwall is super busy in the summer and over the school holidays, so everything gets booked up from the train down here to surf lessons and restaurant tables. So if there’s something you want to do, our advice is to book it as early as possible.
Seasonality
Most places are open year round, but often with reduced opening hours or days in the quieter winter months, so do check before heading out.
Lifeguards generally operate 10am to 6pm from Easter until the end of October. For other beaches and advice on staying safe: rnli.org/find-my-nearest/lifeguarded-beaches
The tide is high
There’s a moon and tide clock in your house so you can plan walks along the beach and rockpooling adventures. We’ll also be posting tide times down on the blackboard outside HQ and at: threemilebeach.co.uk/tides
In this book
We’ve listed everything there is at Three Mile Beach and in walking distance, and that could easily mean you never get in the car for a whole week, or even two.
We’ve then chosen the places and activities that we think are worth heading out to, the further
the drive the more discerning we’ve been. They’re all our favourites for one reason or another though.
Ask us
If you need some help and advice, then give the team a call during office hours and when you’re here pop down to HQ to see us.

LOCAL WINE DELIVERIES

Scarlet Wines are a top-notch independent wines, spirits and beer supplier based at Lelant, next door to the Old Forge Bistro. You can either pop in for a browse or order from their extensive list for delivery to your Three Mile Beach house. Their wine range is individually selected, great quality and includes lots of organic and vegan options too.
And if beer is more your thing, you can also order crates of award-winning real ale direct from Cornish brewers Skinners, the St Ives Brewery or the Verdant Brewery. shop.skinnersbrewery.com stives-brewery.co.uk verdantbrewing.co
We're blessed with the rather excellent Trevaskis Farm Shop just 8 minutes’ drive away. We like to have a sneaky beer in the Red River Inn on the way back. Trevaskis is so much more than your average farm shop, with an extensive range of fresh fruit and vegetables, bakery section, butchery, and fresh fish and deli counters.
All of this plus lots of Cornish-made treats, artisan store cupboard supplies and vegan gluten free options.
It’s open 8am-8pm every day (except Christmas Day), so handy to call in on your way down here. And if you really can’t be bothered to cook you can always head to their onsite restaurant. Trevaskis also offer click and collect and online delivery, see their website for details. trevaskisfarm.co.uk
In nearby Hayle, there’s a large Marks & Spencer (2) on the A30 roundabout where you can stock up on all the M&S foodie favourites. Just off the same roundabout there’s a Lidl (3) store, while at the other end of town, near the viaduct, there’s a large ASDA (4).
Wherever you’re driving from, you’re going to be coming along the A30 once you’re in Cornwall. Come off the A30 at Camborne West (marked 1 on the map) and follow the signs for Connor Downs.
Here’s how to get down to Three Mile Beach. We're in Gwithian Towans, not to be confused with Gwithian village which is set back a little further from the sea.
Three Mile Beach
Gwithian Towans, Gwithian, Hayle TR27 5GE
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE
Your house is available from 5pm unless you’ve arranged an alternative time. On arrival you can go straight to your house and use your key PIN to get in. We’ll text your PIN to you on the day of arrival. Please leave your house by 10am on your day of departure, again, unless you’ve arranged an alternative time.
On departure please leave any items that you hired from us in the house and we’ll sort them out.
Take the first right as you enter Connor Downs on the small road signposted to Gwithian. Enjoy the beautiful views out over the sea as you drive down into Gwithian village! Turn left at the Red River pub T-junction and then, after about 300 metres, turn right down the lane sign posted for Gwithian Towans. Just look out for the brown Three Mile Beach Sign. Follow this lane, over the speed bumps, and look out for the Sunset Surf Café on your right as you enter the Towans. The entrance to Three Mile Beach is immediately after the café and we’re about 50 metres up there.
If you want to pick up supplies or fish and chips en route, see our recommendations for local food shops and places to eat.
You can also visit our website for places to stop for a bite to eat on the M5, A30 and A303 that are bit less run-of-the-mill than service stations. threemilebeach.co.uk/travel-to-cornwall
Electric cars
We currently have two main charge points or there's a normal charging point in each beach house.
TRAINS
Direct and connecting services are available to Cornwall, again check gwr.com
Some trains have a first class Pullman dining carriage where you can enjoy a three course meal.
Train and car hire
We recommend you travel all the way to Penzance and pick up a hire car there. There’s a Europcar office next to the station. There can sometimes be a queue so it’s best if one of you hops off the train quickly. There’s usually a gap between the sleeper train arriving and the office opening, although you can pay a supplement for an early pick up.
You can get off in Truro and pick up a hire car there, but it’s an early start if you’re on the sleeper train and you’ll need to wait in the station café for the Hertz office to open. Plus, you’ll miss the most scenic part of the journey if you get off here. Although for day trains, Truro is the quickest option.
Train and taxi
If you’re planning to take a taxi, then get off the train at St Erth rather than Hayle as plenty more trains stop there. Book your taxi well in advance.
At least one day or more in advance - especially in peak season. See taxi recommendations in the useful information section.
PLANE
Our nearest airport is Newquay, about a 45 minute drive away. Flights are available from a number of UK and Ireland airports including London for connecting flights.
Eastern airways are currently operating services from London Gatwick, East Midlands and Humberside to Newquay. See their website for flights and bookings: easternairways.com
The airlines timetables are subject to change so check online for the latest schedules and flight operator information at cornwallairportnewquay.com or skyscanner.net
Easyjet and Loganair operate flights from Manchester airport to Newquay. Loganair.co.uk and easyjet.com
Hertz and Europcar have offices at the airport and Coastline Travel are the official airport taxi operator. We strongly recommend you call and book your taxi in advance.
coastlinetravel.co.uk - 01637 860 006
PRIVATE PLANE
There’s a private terminal at Newquay airport with a separate terminal building (westonaviation.com) and there’s a heliport at Penzance. We may be able to arrange a more local helicopter landing. Please discuss your travel plans with our team.
Don’t tell anyone, but we have some amazing beaches down here. Here are some of our favourites, including the very large and obvious one a few minutes' walk away. Ask the team about their favourites when you’re down here, they all have their own ‘secret’ one.
Please always follow local advice on staying safe on beaches and only enter the water in the zones indicated by lifeguards. Check rnli.org/find-mynearest/lifeguarded-beaches for other beaches and advice on staying safe.
The tides rule our life down here and you can check our beach at threemilebeach.co.uk/tides. Rock pools are always great for exploring on a falling tide.
Dogs are welcome on most beaches except in high season. Even in high season at our beach, dogs are allowed on most of the beach. For full details of seasonal restrictions on dog access to beaches visit cornwall.gov.uk
WALKABLE
1 THREE MILE BEACH
We love it! And not just us, Gwithian was recently crowned the Sunday Times Best Beach of 2024. Look to the right and you'll see Godrevy Lighthouse and headland, look to your left and the sands stretch all the way from Gwithian, through Upton and Mexico Towans (the Cornish
word for dunes) to the beaches at Hayle. A great beach all year round, whether in the summer sunshine, or for winter welly walks, beloved by surfers and kitesurfers and with superb rock pools at low tide. Watch out for the seals, who often like to play in the surf here.
DOGS ALLOWED
A large part of our beach is open to dogs year round, and boy do they love it. The areas marked on the map are dog-free during July and August from 10am to 6pm.
Gwithian Towans
2 FISHERMAN'S COVE
About an hour's walk east of us, beyond Godrevy Head, you'll find this quiet little beach that's covered at high tide. You can also drive here and park in the Hell's Mouth car park, it's then a 250m walk in the Godrevy direction along the clifftops. Look for a narrow gap in the bushes. The path down is precarious and you'll need a bit of a head for heights. It's a lovely wild beach though and you may find yourself sharing it with the occasional seal and naturist. The sun doesn't hit it until midmorning and disappears off it later in the day. Year round dog access.
SHORT DRIVE
3 ST IVES BEACHES
St Ives TR26 1JZ
St Ives is surrounded by a string of beautiful sand beaches and it's hard to pick a favourite. But If you're heading there for a day out, it's worth considering packing your bathers and towel for a dip. Porthmeor is the most surfy and backs onto the iconic Tate gallery. Little Porthgwidden and the larger Porthminster are much calmer, protected from the Atlantic swells. All can be very busy in season but each has a wonderful café restaurant at the top of the sands. A word of warning, though, parking in high season is horrendous. See the Days Out feature on St Ives for further details.
WORTH DRIVING FOR
4 KYNANCE COVE
Kynance, Lizard Peninsula TR12 7PJ
You'll regularly see this beach appearing on Instagram feeds. Situated on the Lizard Peninsula it's a bit of a drive, but worth the journey. Beautifully picturesque with white sands and dramatic black rock stacks sitting in an azure sea. Wild and dramatic in an Atlantic gale. There's a walk along the coastline from the National Trust car park which only adds to the delight of reaching this stunning beach. It might be a bit of an ask for younger children, but there is also a pushchair friendly alternative route. The perfect place to scramble on the rocks, swim in the blue sea and enjoy a cuppa and a cream tea afterwards in the beach café.
5 PORTHCURNO
Porthcurno, Penwith Peninsula TR19 6JX
One of the most beautiful beaches in Cornwall, after Gwithian. The sand is so soft, white and fine and the sea is truly blue - set in an unspoilt backdrop of dramatic cliffs and overlooked by the iconic Minack Theatre carved into the cliffs.
Another great location for wildlife spottingdolphins and seals are also regular visitors here. It’s worth noting the currents can be strong here and the beach can shelve steeply depending on the tide level.
Porthcurno
THE SANDS OF TIME
Liz Norbury delves into the history of Gwithian
Liz is Secretary of the Friends of the Towans, a charity which helps protect the towans from Hayle to Godrevy.
A boy’s discovery of prehistoric tools on his family’s farm in the early 1940s led to Gwithian being recognised as a place of national archaeological significance.
The find was the start of a lifetime’s work for Charles Thomas, who later became Professor of Cornish Studies at the University of Exeter.
For more than 20 years, he organised regular camps, at which enthusiastic amateurs joined archaeologists to uncover evidence of life in Gwithian across 1,000 years. They found wooden bowls and pottery shards; Bronze Age field boundaries; the outlines of Roman buildings and a medieval manor house.
It was not until the 12th century that dunes - known in Cornwall as ‘towans’ - became a dominant feature of the landscape, when massive quantities of blown sand buried a small chapel. Its replacement, Gwithian Parish Church, was sited safely away from the sea. The alkaline sand, made up of millions of crushed mussels, limpets and cockles, preserved ancient fields and artefacts, and proved to be the perfect habitat for many rare plants: a quarter of all species recorded
in Cornwall are found in the three miles of towans between Hayle estuary and Godrevy headland.
Although mixed farming was for centuries the principal industry in Gwithian, tin streaming took place along the Red River, which flowed through the mining district around Camborne before discharging into the sea. A few mines were established in the towans: there is evidence of one of these, Wheal Emily, within a cliff face close to Gwithian beach. The remains of the National Explosives Works, which employed more than 1,500 people during the First World War, can be clearly seen at Upton Towans.
Facing Gwithian beach is Godrevy Lighthouse, built by Trinity House in 1859, after the steamer, Nile, was wrecked with the loss of all passengers and crew - one of many vessels to come to grief on a notorious jagged reef known as the Stones.
The white octagonal lighthouse was built on Godrevy Island, along with cottages for the three lighthouse keepers, who were given an allowance for food and drink, clothes, furniture, coal and oil.
Godrevy Lighthouse has saved many lives - but the power of the sea can be overwhelming.
In January 1939, the St Ives lifeboat was wrecked on the rocks at Gwithian in a ferocious storm.
The sole survivor, William Freeman, staggered up the beach to reach the clifftop Godrevy Farm.
The farmer who came to his aid then cycled to St Ives to report the loss of the lifeboat.
From the early 20th century, families from Hayle and Camborne built basic beach huts at Gwithian, which evolved into holiday chalets.
In a recording for the Hayle Oral History Project, a local man shares memories of carefree childhood days at the chalet where his family stayed from April to September every year. Facilities were basic: water was fetched from a pump, and light came from a paraffin lamp.
Archive film from the 1930s shows holidaymakers enjoying simple pleasures such as kite flying and egg and spoon races - and the timeless joy of plunging into the waves at one of Cornwall’s most spectacular beaches.

WALKABLE
A STROLL TO GODREVY HEAD
GWITHIAN TO HAYLE
This walk follows the coast path all the way through the dunes to Hayle, returning along the beach, so check tide times. The walk takes you through the beautiful Towans (the Cornish word for sand dunes), designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest for their geology and wildlife. A fifth of all Cornwall’s plant species can be found in this one relatively small area, and the plants support abundant birdlife and many species of butterflies.
This is a must-do short walk from Three Mile Beach, taking in our beach and the coastal views over St Ives Bay and the lighthouse on Godrevy Island. When you reach Mutton Cove, you may well see seals pulled up on the rocks, particularly in the autumn. In fact, this whole stretch of coast is good for seal spotting, and there’s also a chance you might spy dolphin pods in St Ives Bay. Please note that stopping off at the Jam Pot is a compulsory part of this walk.
CRAIG'S RUNNING TIPS
It is great for running here. The obvious route that most people take is along the beach towards the lighthouse and loop around the headland then back to Gwithian. There is the coast path, of course, so you can carry on as far as you want.
If the tide is in, head to the bottom of the car park then go left along the path into the dunes, there are lots of paths in these dunes so you can go as far as you want. I generally stay close to the beach - be careful there are some serious drops off the cliffs.
If you want to mix dunes and beach, after about 1km the cliffs disappear and you can drop down to the beach. Run back along the beach and up the steps. If you’ve been reading about Wim Hof and the current fashion for cold water dips and
swims, there is a pool here known locally as the Sheep Dip. It is the second pool on the left as you go through the gap in the rocks back to the beach steps. Don’t attempt if the tide’s getting close.
If you fancy a change, head to The Rockpool Café along the beach, follow the road away from the sea and when you hit the B-road turn left, then about 400 metres up the road a small road turns right and follows the peaceful and scenic Red River valley. There are some big hills up here - follow your nose and retrace your steps to get back.
SHORT DRIVE
LELANT TO ST IVES
This stunning coastal walk follows the route of the railway line that connects Lelant to St Ives. We think this is one of the most beautiful parts of Cornwall with its three white-sand beaches all in a row. The first is Porthkidney, dog-friendly all year round. Next is Carbis Bay, where you might be tempted to drop in for refreshments at the hotel. Finally, Porthminster Beach - where the lovely café is another good place to rest your feet. The walk ends in St Ives, where you can enjoy a pleasant hour or two pottering around the town. To get home, just catch the train for a scenic ride back to Lelant.

Photographer and writer, David Chapman, introduces the nature on our doorstep
Gwithian Towans is just one section of a three-mile stretch of dunes between Hayle and the headland of Godrevy which is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is blessed with a richness of flora and fauna, some of which I will highlight here.
The dunes are special for wildflowers partly because the sand contains a high percentage of shell matter making it suitable for species more often associated with limestone and chalk, such as cowslips (May), carline thistle and pyramidal orchid (June/July). Other orchids include southern marsh orchid (June) and autumn lady’s tresses (August/September).
Many of the smaller flowers such as storksbill, bird’s-foot trefoil and restharrow grow at the edge of rabbit burrows where the bare ground allows their seeds to germinate. The tiny eyebright grows amongst short grass. Look out for sea holly at the northern end of Gwithian whilst the tall flower
spikes of viper’s bugloss can be found throughout.
Flowers attract insects. The most significant is the silver-studded blue butterfly, a nationally scarce species which appears here in large numbers (late June/July).
Others include dark green fritillary, brown argus and small pearl-bordered fritillary.
There are striking moths too, both the cinnabar moth (May/June) and the six-spot burnet moth (June/August) are red and black and quite common, the scarlet tiger is red, black and white and can be found around patches of hemp agrimony.
Less striking in appearance, but with an amazing hovering flight, the hummingbird hawkmoth can sometimes be seen.
There are plenty of birds to look out for.
Overhead you might see a hovering kestrel, soaring buzzard or even a stooping peregrine. Ravens frequently glide nonchalantly along the coast and choughs are being seen with increasing regularity around Godrevy.
Look for the colourful stonechats which perch on top of bushes to make their stone-tapping calls. Whitethroat are vocal in May, but the real songsters of the dunes are the skylarks which hover high in the sky to pour out their hearts in rapturous song.
Birdwatchers would be well advised to walk around St Gothian Sands, here there is a lake with wildfowl, warblers, swallows and sand martins to name but a few.
Beyond this the headland of Godrevy offers further bird watching potential with nesting sea birds such as fulmar and shag, and the opportunity to spot dolphins, porpoises and literally hundreds of grey seals.
At Gwithian we are privileged to have a very special place for wildlife. It is incumbent on us all to take care of it. Remember the old adage ‘leave nothing but footprints and take nothing but photos’ and you won’t go far wrong but even your footprints here should be light because the dunes are easily eroded and wildflowers damaged.

Where to Watch Wildlife in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly by David Chapman
Pendrea Rd, Penzance, Cornwall TR18 3ND Kernow Tours are fun, private car trips around Cornwall—typically lasting 4, 5, or 8 hours. You can pick from classic routes like 'Best of the West', or go on themed mini-adventures. They’re run by local guide, Conrad, who’ll mix well-known sights with cool off-the-beaten-path spots—think mining ruins, and dramatic coves. And if you’re feeling adventurous, just say the word—they’ll whip up a custom or multi-day trip tailored just for you.

2 THE LIZ ARD & KYNANCE COVE
This beautiful peninsula is a little more off the beaten track and great for exploring, with beaches all around its coastline. Kynance and Cadgwith coves are two of our favourites. Lizard Point is Britain’s most southerly extremity and a truly dramatic spot where birdwatchers might chance a rare sighting of the famous Cornish chough (black body, red legs and beak, jackdawstyle call).
Penzance is worth a visit for its independent shops and antiques alone. Start at historic Chapel Street where you’ll also find the famous Admiral Benbow pub. The pride of the town is Jubilee Pool, an impressive saltwater art deco lido on the seafront with geothermal heated water. You’ll also find modern art at The Exchange and works by the renowned ‘Newlyn School’ artists at Penlee Art Gallery. Newlyn is just a little further along the bay. It’s a proper fishing town, so this is where you can buy the freshest seafood. Must-visits are The Tolcarne Inn and the legendary Jelbert’s for ‘vanilla-only’ ice cream. Newlyn Art Gallery holds changing exhibitions of contemporary art. Mousehole is a pretty-as-a-picture fishing village. Just follow the coast road west, and you’ll happen upon the huddle of cottages around the tiny harbour. Foodie highlights here are The Old Coastguard, 2 Fore Street, and Lewis', a topnotch chippie. 5
Carved into the bare rock, the Minack’s stage teeters on the edge of the cliff overlooking Porthcurno Bay, and the seats have a mindblowing view of both the performers and the ocean. Theatre season runs from May to October, but even without a show it’s still a must-visit. Plus, there’s a subtropical garden, an exhibition centre, and you might spot a pod of dolphins. There's a (very) steep path down to the beach or take the path from the car park at the bottom of the hill. One of the most photographed beaches in Cornwall with its powder white sand and turquoise sea set in a perfect little bay.
7
In the morning take a stroll around these beautiful NT gardens overlooking the Fal River estuary.
It’s then an hour’s journey via the King Harry Ferry, a historic chain-pulled ferry, to the Roseland Peninsula. Head down the small lanes to the Hidden Hut at Porthcurnick for a freshly cooked lunch with stunning clifftop views. Warning, it’s super-popular and can’t be booked. (There's a pub and café in Porthcurnick if it's too busy.) In the afternoon, potter on the lovely beaches and explore the rock pools. Head back, via the ferry, and have a pint at the Punchbowl & Ladle pub on your right, just up the road from Trelissick Gardens.
Park the car at the Penrose National Trust car park on the road from Helston at the turn off for Loe Bar. From here take a walk through the beautiful woodland estate until you reach the wild coast at Loe Bar. It's an easy walk along the stunning coast path from here to pretty Porthleven. After you've explored and lunched in Porthleven (see the eat and drink section) then either make your way back through Penrose along the higher field path, or take the short cut along the road (15 mins).
Head to Trebah Gardens, about 45 mins' drive from us. The beautiful subtropical gardens tumble down to a tiny beach on the Helford Estuary. Take a pit stop in the café for lunch or a snack before a short drive to the NT car park at Bosveal. Walk through the forest to Durgan Beach, much loved by locals and instagrammers. It's a stony beach with clear water, perfect for swimming and snorkelling. A 15 min walk along the coast path to your right as you face the estuary brings you to the Ferry Boat Inn for a sundowner, or an early supper, overlooking the river.
This fairy-tale castle on an islet is connected to the mainland by a cobbled causeway at low tide and by boat at high tide. It's named after the patron saint of fishermen who is said to have appeared on the island, warning seafarers of the treacherous rocks. Plant lovers enjoy its lush subtropical gardens. History lovers like to stand on the site where the first beacon was lit to warn of the impending arrival of the Spanish Armada. And everyone loves to stand and take in the wide views.
Four miles north of Three Mile Beach, you’ll find
Tehidy Country Park, the largest area of woodland in west Cornwall. Tehidy has over nine miles of paths and 250 acres of peaceful woods and lakes to explore, together with a café and a picnic area. It's an enchanting place to visit all year round. Look out for Rogue Theatre’s immersive outdoor theatre performances here in the school holidays.

There is nowhere else like The Eden Project. It’s a glorious celebration of nature and an almost otherworldly experience. So to get the most out of your day we recommend either flying on the
Skybus light aircraft from Land’s End Airport to St Mary's, or on the helicopter service from Penzance, which flies direct to both St Mary's and Tresco (a short hop of 15-20 minutes).
For ideas on how to spend your day, head to the islesofscilly-travel.co.uk and visitislesofscilly.com websites for inspiration and suggested itineraries.
Explore St Mary's by bike or on foot or head to the stunning beaches on St Martin's or the divine Abbey Gardens on Tresco. Flights do get very booked up so it's recommended to book well in advance. Flights are also subject to weather conditions.

SHOPPING
Nearby St Ives is a cobbled street shopping mecca of independent stores and galleries. Fore
Street and the streets around it are the hub for
shopping - we like the Porthminster Gallery on Fore Street, lifestyle store Academy & Co on Lifeboat Hill and St Ives Ceramics on Fish Street.
For bigger high street stores, Cornwall's cathedral city of Truro has all the usual. There's also a Saturday market on Lemon Quay with a mixture of local food produce and crafts.
Antiques & vintage etc.
Whether you’re an antique aficionado or just love browsing interesting and quirky shops, Cornwall is a goldmine. In Hayle, there's a collection of independent shops and makers at the Old Foundry Chapel which is well worth a peek.
While in Penzance, the shops clustered around funky Chapel Street are an eclectic range of vintage, antiques and independent boutiques.
Check out Daisy Laing Vintage to browse midcentury furniture and a great selection of vinyl.
In Falmouth, head to the Old High Street for an intriguing mix of independents including Inspire Makers, Ludgate House Antiques and the Cloudberry.

Recommendations
On these pages, we’ve shortlisted some of the accessible beaches, green spaces, activities, places to visit and to eat out. We've largely approached this from a mobility aspect, but have provided links for further accessibility information. Durations are approximate driving distances from Three Mile Beach.
ACCESSIBLE BEACHES
Gwithian Towans
The beach at Gwithian, in front of Three Mile Beach, is accessed by a flight of steps a few minutes along the coast path. The steps themselves are solid and well maintained and they have a handrail but they are fairly steep with a larger step at the bottom.
Hayle Towans (15 minutes)
Three Mile Beach is named after the gorgeous sweep of golden sands that stretches from Godrevy Lighthouse all the way along to the golden sands at the river estuary in Hayle. At Riviere Sands in Hayle, you can access the fine sandy beach from a concrete ramp from the car park by the Bluff Inn pub. The car park by the pub is fairly small and is on quite a steep slope. There is an additional larger pay and display car park just across the lane.
COAST & COUNTRYSIDE RAMBLES
There are some lovely options for wheelchair or
motor scooter rambles along coast or countryside in Cornwall. Here we’ve chosen a few of our nearby favourites.
North Cliffs, North Coast Cornwall (15 minutes)
This is a wheelchair-friendly route along a spectacular and rugged bit of Cornwall’s north coastline, just along the coast from Three Mile Beach. The National Trust have recently upgraded around half a mile of the path with a generally flat, good surface suited for wheelchairs and mobility scooters. There are three small free car parks at North Cliffs although the surface of these does vary and they do often have potholes.
Tehidy Country Park Walk (15 minutes)
Tehidy is a beautiful estate of beech woodlands, lakes and countryside which once belonged to the Basset family who made their fortunes through tin mining. Here you’ll find a wheelchair- friendly circular walk which follows mainly level but unbound surface paths around the historic estate. There’s free car parking here plus a café and public toilets at the main entrance.
Penzance to Marazion (25 minutes)
The South West Coast Path from Penzance to Marazion is a two-mile stretch along the sea wall. Virtually flat all the way it’s well suited for wheelchair users and pushchairs too. Enjoy the views of glorious Mount's Bay with St Michael’s Mount on one side, while the trains chug past on the other side. There are car parks at either end and you’ll find plenty of facilities in both Penzance
and Marazion and a ramp down to Marazion Beach near the western car park.
Penrose Estate (30 minutes)
A little further afield, you’ll find the National Trust owned Penrose Estate, a beautiful area of woodland, streams and a large inland salt lake leading to the coast at Loe Bar. The path from the boating lake at Helston has a gentle gradient and a smooth sealed surface all the way to the Stables Café kiosk which serves coffees, ice creams and cakes. There are public toilets with disabled facilities at both the boating lake and the Stables Café. If you venture further into the estate, the paths become more uneven but will still be accessible for many all the way to the coast.
PLACES TO VISIT
You’ll find a whole range of days out and attractions to visit in Cornwall and the majority of these will have useful accessibility information on their websites. Here we’ve chosen a few ideas to get you inspired for your stay.
Tate St Ives Modern Art Museum (25 minutes)
The Tate has one blue badge parking bay available for disabled visitors which must be booked at least 24 hours in advance (01736 791177).
There are wheelchairs available to borrow here, the lift is suitable for wheelchair users and gives access to all floors of the gallery. On the top floor there’s a small but wheelchair accessible café with views out to sea.
Minack Theatre (45 minutes)
There is disabled access to most of the site but not to the stage area or lower (main) section of the auditorium, which is accessed via steep steps. There is however an accessible balcony for those coming to watch a performance, space is limited and must be booked in advance via the box office.
For more details see: minack.com/accessibility
The National Maritime Museum, Falmouth (45 minutes)
The whole museum is accessible with lift and ramp access to all floors including the Tower and Tidal galleries, plus wheelchair accessible toilets.
Trebah Garden, Falmouth (50 minutes)
Trebah is a lush valley garden packed with subtropical flowers and plants and over four miles of paths, leading to a sweet beach on the Helford River. Very family friendly with adventure play areas and children’s trails. The visitor centre, café and shop and about 80% of the garden are accessible by a suitable motorised wheelchair. Two motorised ’Tramper’ mobility scooters are available to book in advance.
The Eden Project (1 hour)
Disabled and pushchair friendly, The Eden Project goes the extra mile to be accessible to all their visitors, see their very detailed online accessibility guide. edenproject.com/visit/before-you-visit/ accessibility-guide

PLACES TO VISIT
Lost Gardens of Heligan (1 hour)
It’s a bit of a drive to Lost Gardens but these beautiful gardens really are worth a visit if you can fit them into your itinerary. Most of the 13 acre Northern Gardens is accessible and while the Jungle and Wider Estate are not accessible to all, there is an ‘armchair’ video tour available. There’s a Wheelchair Access Map and a spacious wheelchair-friendly café at the entrance. heligan.com/visiting-us/disabled-access
Lanhydrock House (55 minutes)
One of the National Trust’s flagship properties in Cornwall, Lanhydrock is a magnificent Victorian manor house set in beautiful gardens and countryside near Bodmin. Accessibility for all has really been thought through here and facilities include a disabled parking area in the car park, an access buggy service between the reception and the gatehouse buildings, a “tramper” electric all-terrain mobility scooter available to hire for exploring the gardens and personal mobility vehicles available to borrow from the house. Access details can be downloaded from the website. nationaltrust.org.uk/lanhydrock
ACCESSIBLE ACTIVITIES
If you’re looking for unique experiences and activities, here are a few suggestions for your stay.
Kayaking with Lizard Adventures, Hayle (15 minutes)
Lizard Adventures are a not-for-profit organisation, working with the National Trust, who offer accessible kayaking adventures for all ranging from a one-off taster session to a series of lessons. Their two main sites are Hayle Harbour and the lake at Clowance Estate, using sit-on-top kayaks (doubles and singles) and open canoes. They can also take more experienced kayakers to Mullion Cove on the Lizard. accesslizardadventure.co.uk
Cornwall Swimming Horses, Longrock (25 minutes)
These small stables offer the magical experience of swimming in the sea with your horse from the beautiful beach at Longrock, overlooking St Michael’s Mount (May−Sept only). This is an activity that can be suited for many. They say:
‘Special needs riders and those suffering with long term illnesses, have benefited from the therapeutic impact of swimming alongside these amazing sentient animals. We can tailor the experience to be as gentle as required.’ cornwallswimminghorses.co.uk
BF Adventure, Falmouth (45 minutes)
This is an outdoor activity centre and charity near Falmouth which offer a range of exciting activities both on and off the water. They can accommodate clients with additional needs including wheelchair users. Lots of outside seating on a sunny day and the inside is wheelchair accessible too. There’s free parking available in the car park at the front of the Bistro.
The Godolphin Arms, Marazion (25 minutes)
More of a lounge and restaurant than a pub, but it’s a real go-to when visiting Marazion. There’s a lift to take guests with limited mobility from the main entrance to the first floor space and accessible toilets. There isn’t a car park here, but it is close to the car park at the western end of Marazion.
Plume of Feathers, Newquay (35 minutes)
A large dog friendly pub with an airy conservatory and wheelchair access throughout. There is a large car park and a beer garden for warmer days.
The Gurnard's Head, Zennor (35 minutes)
Slightly further afield, but The Gurnard's Head has a lovely location overlooking the sea just outside Zennor. There’s easy car parking and the pub is wheelchair accessible.
Lewinnick Lodge (45 minutes)
With stunning Atlantic sea views, this cliff side restaurant near Newquay is wheelchair accessible with two disabled parking spaces. Just request a roomy table if you require more space. All dietary requirements are catered for.

Amazing location
Beautiful beaches
Gorgeous old town and harbour
We love St Ives but its reputation precedes it and in the summer and school holidays fighting through the crowds is not for the faint hearted.
Take the Train
In theory, St Ives is a 20 minute drive away but in high season and holidays the car parks soon fill up and it’s not much fun circling like a hungry seagull looking for a space. If you do decide to drive, then follow the signs and head for the long stay car parks on the hill above the town.
A rather more refined and stress-free way to arrive is to take the little branch line into St Ives from St Erth railway station. It’s around 20 minutes to drive to St Erth and you can usually find a space in the station car park.
The train winds past Hayle Estuary, and along the coast at Carbis Bay, before pulling into St Ives station, just above Porthminster Beach.
World class art
Wonderful restaurants
Ridiculously busy in school holidays
It’s also possible to drive and then walk into St Ives, and you’ll find printed self-guided walks in your house. The final alternative is to bite the bullet and get a taxi.
Coffee at the beach
From the tiny station head down to the white sands of Porthminster Beach just below. Here you’ll find Porthminster Beach Café over to the right-hand side. There’s an outside deck area where you can enjoy a morning coffee while you take in the scenery of beach, coastline and Godrevy Lighthouse in the distance.
Into the Warren
The walk into the main part of St Ives takes you through a jumble of tiny streets, lined with pretty cottages, appropriately known as the Warren. You emerge at the other side looking out over St Ives harbour with its stretch of sand, boats and quayside. There’s plenty to explore in the narrow cobbled streets of St Ives, particularly if you enjoy a spot of shopping. The main shopping streets are Fore Street, which runs just behind the harbour, and the streets around it.
Time for lunch
Although it’s tempting to eat out on the harbour front we’d give that a miss, it’s not worth the hassle from the seagulls, who are notorious here. Head to Source Kitchen on The Digey for a gourmet Cornish crab grilled cheese sandwich or a panfried fillet of line-caught fish of the day - or, keep it simple and pick up a Cornish pasty from the excellent St Ives Bakery at the end of Fore Street.
Refuelled and ready for an afternoon of culture, walk across the little spit of land known as The Island and home to yet more gorgeous little streets and cottages and you’ll come out on the Porthmeor Beach side of St Ives. This beach is just lovely and set above it, looking out to sea, you’ll find the Tate St Ives art museum. The Tate is home to Cornish and St Ives School artworks from the 19th century onwards although it’s particularly known as a champion of the modern art scene. The views from the windows out over Porthmeor Beach are great, plus there’s a small rooftop café with a terrace too.
Tea with a view
Just opposite the Tate is Porthmeor Beach Café if you’re ready for a cup of tea and a slice of cake or more. You can sit outside and enjoy the views even
on a chilly winter’s day from their heated outside beach booths. This is a great place for seal and dolphin spotting. If you’ve got time, then take a walk along the coast path from Porthmeor towards Zennor to see more of this gorgeous coastline.
Back at the Island end of the harbour, the 14th century Sloop Inn is the perfect people-watching spot and, if you’ve got room, then squeeze in a delicious ice cream from Moomaid. From here it’s an easy walk back along the harbour and through the Warren to Porthminster Beach and the station.

It is no secret that west Cornwall’s special quality of light has drawn painters to the once small fishing town of St Ives since the beginning of the nineteenth century.
The first recorded visit was by Turner in 1811, only for many more to follow with the development of the railways. By the early twentieth century, artists were beginning to take up residence in the town and today west Cornwall, or Penwith, has one of the largest artist communities in the UK.
The most prominent gallery is the recently refurbished and award-winning Tate St Ives: a modern pavilion that lies on the site of an old gas works, overlooking the surfers of Porthmeor Beach. The gallery celebrates both the international legacy of modern artists associated with Penwith and contemporary living international artists, along with incomparable vistas from its rooftop café. Only a stone’s throw away, you will find Porthmeor Studios who offer artist residencies and captivating events to the public. Originally built in the early 1800s for the pilchard fishery, it’s now arguably the oldest and most iconic artists’ studios in the country. It has also hosted some of the most illustrious artists working in Britain, including Julius Olsson, Frances Hodgkins, Ben Nicholson, Patrick Heron, Francis Bacon and Wilhelmina Barns-Graham.
'FINDING TREWYN
STUDIO WAS A SORT OF MAGIC.'
- Barbara Hepworth
Then there is the highly esteemed Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden managed by the Tate. Hepworth once wrote that 'Finding Trewyn Studio was a sort of magic', a magic that is not lost on visitors today, often described as an oasis in the centre of St Ives. It is here where Hepworth lived and worked from 1949 until she died in 1975 when the house and garden were given to the nation. The appeal of Penwith has not been limited to artists but attracted poets and writers too.
During WW1 DH Lawrence spent some time in the area, Virginia Woolf enjoyed summers in
St Ives and based her novel, 'To the Lighthouse', on Godrevy Lighthouse across St Ives Bay.
In 1920 Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada founded The Leach Pottery, which is still among the most respected and influential potteries in the world. Over the last hundred years, it has forged the shape of studio pottery in the UK and beyond. Today the Leach Pottery Studio Museum and Gallery continue developing Bernard Leach's historic legacy.
On the opposite coast, only a short drive away, you will find the 125-year-old Newlyn Art Gallery and its younger branch, The Exchange. Across the two sites, their exhibition programme covers many styles, with thoroughly engaging supporting events.
In recent years, their programme has extended beyond their gallery walls with major installations from Lahore-based artist Imran Qureshi at Truro Cathedral and Canadian artist Janet Cardiff at Richmond Chapel.
Another gem also not to be missed is Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens in St Michael's Mount Bay. A beautiful, sheltered valley overlooking the bay, with large-scale exotic and subtropical planting interwoven with contemporary artwork by internationally renowned artists such as James Turrell, David Nash and Richard Long. Be sure not to leave without visiting their delicious restaurant and shop.

Cliffs and rocks
Dunes
The dunes at Gwithian are a delicate habitat for much wildlife, so it’s best to stick to the footpaths. Be aware that there are cliffs between the dunes and the beach and there is a danger of dunes collapsing on children if they dig tunnels into them.
There are adders, which are venomous, in the dunes and on Godrevy Head, so it’s best to keep your dog on a lead and, to be on the safe side, make sure children stick to the path. We have dog adder kits at HQ if needed.
Please take extreme care near the edge of cliffs, particularly with young children and dogs, and avoid the foot of cliffs where there may be the danger of falling debris. Rocks at the edge of the sea can seem like a great place to stand but some waves can be larger than others and there’s a risk of being swept off them.
