COUNTY OF SUFFOLK
OFFICE OF THE COUNTY EXECUTIVE

May 11,2018

Dear Visitor,
I would like to take a moment to wholeheartedly welcome you to what is, without question, one of the most delightful and charming vacation and summer home locations that can be found: the Greater Westhampton area. There are endless opportunities for enjoyment during your time here, as I am sure you will soon discover.
Perhaps one of the greatest treasures the area has to offer is its magnificent beaches, which are recognized as being among the best nationwide. Whether you are looking for time to unwind in the sun, or seek a more thrilling experience such as surfing, your days spent here in the sand will undoubtedly be pleasant and refreshing.

In addition to the impeccable beaches, there are countless other ways to have a fulfilling and fun time here, be it attending the wide variety of activities that the Westhampton Beach Business Alliance sponsors annually, spending the day having a relaxing shopping experience in the downtown area at any of the fine retailers located there, or enjoying a plate of local, fresh seafood at one of the many delicious restaurants. There is truly something to please everyone.
So whether you are a first time visitor or a life-long resident, I urge you to take the time to genuinely appreciate all that the area has to offer. I hope your time spent in this vibrant community proves to be as wonderful for you and your family as it has always been for me. Let this “passport” be your guide.
Sincerely,

THE VILLAGE OF WESTHAMPTON BEACH

As the Mayor of Westhampton Beach for the last nine years, it is my privilege to welcome you to our beautiful Village. Westhampton Beach is a sparkling destination with some of the nation’s most stunning beaches, waterfront properties, and summertime attractions.

We recently completed a total reconstruction of our Main Street, so residents and visitors alike can now enjoy wider sidewalks, beautiful landscaping, expanded outdoor dining, new green spaces and skies uncluttered by overhead wires. Our ample seating and pocket parks provide perfect places to rest, relax and meet new friends.
Westhampton Beach has many new restaurants and shops, so take a moment to seek out the splendid shopping options and wide array of fine dining choices. Whether you are interested in a family friendly stroll down Main Street, a sun-soaked day at our worldclass beaches, or a foray into the diverse cultural lineup offered at our Performing Arts Center, the Village has something for everyone.
You won’t want to miss our concerts, art shows, Monday night movies and other events on the Great Lawn. Our marina is centrally located in the heart of the Village, with kayak and paddleboard rentals and sunset cruises. For a taste of the East End’s rich bounty, head to the Farmers Market every Saturday on our Village Green. Our lovely park on Glover’s Lane offers a peaceful setting to relax by the fountain, or to have some fun playing bocce, chess, checkers or backgammon available at the Chamber of Commerce office.
Westhampton Beach’s lush Village Green is the spot for summer experiences, with concerts under a starlit sky and children’s events sponsored by our Library all summer long. These hometown events will make forever memories for you and your family.
During every season, residents and visitors can count on the Village of Westhampton Beach to remain a refuge from the noise and distractions that seem to fill our days.
Summer is the time for simple pleasures. We are fortunate to have such stunning beaches, excellent dining and festive entertainment opportunities, all while maintaining that small town feel. I hope you fully enjoy your stay in our charming Village and share in all that it has to offer.

Celebrating 30 Years Lillian’s Hair Salon

Lillian’s Hair Salon in Westhampton Beach celebrated 30 years in business by hosting a charity Cut a Thon on June 11th for the benefit of the Making Headway Foundation, a pediatric nonprofit charity for children who have brain and spinal cord tumors. 100% of the money raised through this benefit will be donated to the Foundation. More than $10,000 was raised so far, with more funds pledged to come in. Lillian would like to acknowledge and express her gratitute to all the volunteers, the businesses that donated raffle prizes, DJ Mike Variale, and Bartenders to Go Girls for their time and generosity which helped make this charity event a successful and memorable day. God bless.
Lillian grew up in the beauty business. Her older sister owned a salon for years. Lillian would help out in the salon after school & on Saturdays sweeping hair & greeting clients. She was a natural and acquired her engaging people skills & had a knack for working with the public early on. The clients quickly became friends.

The Schon family moved out “East” in 1989 from Nassau county. Lillian’s continued passion for hair lead her to opening a hair salon in Westhampton Beach in 1993. Her salon offered a vast array of services ranging from simple child’s trim to hair coloring transformation, to full wedding glam . Quickly, Lillian became involved in her community. Lillian’s Salon has survived many challenges over the years; snow storms, hurricane, the tearing up & reconstruction of Main Street, and most recently the pandemic. Lillian contributes the Salon’s survival during hese challenges to her many loyal clients who have followed her over the years. She would like to say, “ thank you, thank you” to all of my wonderful clients, friends, and family. She appreciates all the love & support that has been given to her.
The beauty industry is a happy business.
When you look in the mirror & see a smile our job was completed. Lillian and her team are excited to be celebrating 30 years in business and will continue to beautify our community.

Long Island, as we all know, is a special place for many reasons. Whether it is time spent in the Hamptons, enjoying the outdoors, or catching those incredible days at our ocean beaches, not much can compare to a perfect day out-east.
Another fascinating aspect of Long Island is it’s world-class fishing. Even if you aren’t a fisher, enjoying local Long Island Seafood is an opportunity not to be missed. We are in a special place; the Labrador Current draws cold water species down from the North off of our shores, and the Gulf Stream Current brings Southern species up from the South. These two currents almost create a ballet of advances and releases throughout the year. Along with this ever-performing dance of ocean currents, comes some of the most bountiful, unique and sought-after seafood that we are known for around the world. So, let’s talk about all of these special, and sometimes hidden, local treasures!
Last year we had mentioned an exciting potential opportunity that has now arrived…Atlantic Royal Red Shrimp!!! Shrimp that are local to Long Island, WHAT?! Yes, it is true, off the coast of Long Island, in very deep water, there is a variety of shrimp called Royal Red Shrimp that migrate up and down the East Coast depending on the time of year. To harvest these shrimp, a special set of circumstances and harvest methods need to align to have a successful landing such as this.

At Haskell’s Seafood Market and Cafe on Main Street in Westhampton Beach, you can discover this new “shrimp lovers” opportunity and experience true wild-caught Long Island shrimp. Royal Reds are sweet and succulent. Their texture can be comparable to fresh lobster, and even more tender. Haskell’s Seafood offers Shrimp Cocktail, Shrimp Salads, Shrimp Rolls, Cajun Buttered Shrimp and Fried Royal Red Shrimp as an offering to explore the diversity of this lesser known deep sea treasure. As these local shrimp have not been treated with any preservatives that most other shrimp have been subject to, you will have a pure and true experience as to what local wild caught shrimp can taste like in it’s most honest form.
There is another deep-water Long Island fish that we see throughout the year called Golden Tilefish. If you have ever enjoyed Golden Tilefish before, you may have noticed that it too has a sweet and almost crustacean-like flavor to it. It just so happens that Golden Tilefish and Royal Red Shrimp reside in the same deep waters of the ocean… and you guessed it…Golden Tilefish LOVE to eat Royal Red Shrimp! At Haskell’s Seafood, we enjoy sharing the information of all these fascinating facts about our local waters.

Ever heard of “Pumpkin Swordfish”?! Highly sought after by Chefs, the Pumpkin Swordfish gets this name due to the color of it’s flesh. It’s not a different type of Swordfish by nature, but the color and flavor of swordfish changes due to what it is feeding on. I’ll bet at this point you have guessed right again! When Swordfish feed on a high diet of Shrimp, it in fact changes the flavor and color of the fish to possess a sweetness and pumpkin-like rosy hue. All of this is happening right off the coast of Long Island thanks to the Royal Red Shrimp!

“So why haven’t I heard of or seen Royal Red Shrimp at grocery stores of markets before?”, one might ask. There is a very good answer to that. Some of our local seafood opportunities are boutique, meaning that some things just haven’t been marketed or made commercially viable due to the specialized effort that is needed to make a harvest possible. Haskell’s Seafood, founded by Captain Peter Haskell, maintains direct relationships with our fleet of fishing boats on the East End of Long Island which makes it possible for us to rediscover seafood opportunities that one may have never seen. Haskell’s Seafood is not only committed to only working with the local seafood harvests of Long Island, but we are a direct conduit to our local fisheries with no one in the middle. Local seafood is harvested, Haskell’s Seafood thoughtfully prepares, and we then want you to be the direct recipient of our East End’s bounty!
Much of our fisheries are about telling its story. Many of us have our own, growing up and fishing on the bays of Long Island, bringing the catch back to the house for an evening feast with family. It truly is our heritage on Long Island that we are talking about and sharing that story keeps heritage alive and well. We encourage this type of conversation at Haskell’s Seafood which often leads to education passing back and forth, awareness of our surroundings, and a responsible role that is played in the big/small picture of our Local Seafood Landings. I often say to myself, “What better of a life could you live, sharing all of this with others, experiencing the seasonal offerings year after year, and celebrating life on Long Island the same way it has been done for centuries, but doing it today and each day thereafter.” We look forward to all of your visits at Haskell’s Seafood this season and thank YOU for being a part of the big/small picture here on the East End of Long Island!

Long Island MacArthur Airport Terminal Improvements Make Flying
a Breeze
Shelley LaRose-Arken, Commissioner Long Island MacArthur Airport

Major state-of-the-art improvements are underway at Long Island MacArthur Airport, including new baggage carousels, vestibules and doors with energy efficient designs, all of which will enhance the level of service and travelers’ experiences at the Ronkonkoma-based airport. In addition to the infrastructure improvements, the airport is taking on a leadership role in providing aviation education and career opportunities on site to students living on the East End of Long Island, through a recently announced partnership with the Cradle of Aviation, in Garden City.
“The Cradle of Aviation Museum is thrilled to partner with MacArthur Airport on this unique educational initiative. The partnership will enable the museum to bring exciting education programs to schools in Suffolk County, and combine it with tours of the airport to provide students with exposure to careers in aviation,” said Andy Parton, President of the Cradle of Aviation Museum.
“The Town of Islip and MacArthur Airport recognize the need to reach out to young adults with potential career opportunities, to keep future generations here on Long Island,” said Town of Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “Aviation incorporates science, technology, engineering, and mathematics – all academic disciplines that offer a full and exciting range of career opportunities.
“Airline crew shortages including pilots, maintenance mechanics, and flight attendants is frequently in the news. We hope to change that narrative by partnering in this endeavor with the Cradle of Aviation,” said Commissioner of Aviation and Transportation for Long Island MacArthur Airport, Shelley LaRose-Arken.
Long Island MacArthur Airport (ISP) recently dedicated its $8.4 million, 12,000sf Ground Transportation Center (GTC) following the completion of a Terminal Walkway, which was the final component of the GTC project. In many cases these types of improvements will address issues that have needed attention for 60 years. “It is a continual process to update our existing facility so that it provides a comfortable experience, prioritizes security, and reflects new standards of practice,” said Airport Commissioner Shelley LaRose-Arken.
“We were able to secure more grant funding than any other airport of our size. These construction projects will enhance the unmatched airport experience for our loyal Long Island customers, as well as visitors to our area,” said Town of Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “We are so grateful to all who helped us secure funding for these much-needed projects,” she added.
In addition, the airport announced $26 million in improvements to the Main Terminal Building, along with Mechanical Engineering and Plumbing (MEP) upgrades. The project is expected to take approximately one year to complete.
The construction improvements now underway will further improve the level of service for customers and will update and refresh systems. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act is providing $14 million in funding for MacArthur Airport allocated by the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Terminal Program. The grant for MEP work will be used to update the airport’s terminal with
energy-efficient upgrades such as fire and life safety equipment in compliance with current building codes, HVAC climate-control systems, replacement of electrical systems including lighting and signs, air purification installation, new energy-efficient plumbing fixtures, and a new backup emergency generator.
The $12m Main Terminal Building project will replace three baggage carousels, improving and updating the system with new equipment and additional security. The renovated area is approximately 12,000sf. The project also includes the complete replacement of the existing main terminal roof, originally installed in 1964 and replaced most recently in 1984. Additionally, the work will replace outdated vestibules and doors with energy efficient designs, including air curtains to keep cold air outside during the winter and cool air inside during the summer.
These projects combine with previous work over the past seven years, for a total of $100 million in capital improvements, ensuring the integrity of the airport’s infrastructure. This work includes significant airfield updates, along with the new Fire House, the Ground Transportation Center, and work to the terminal.
Long Island MacArthur Airport is home to three major air carriers, Breeze Airways, Frontier Airlines and Southwest Airlines, who serve a total of 14 destinations nonstop from the airport.
Breeze Airways, the airport’s newest carrier, will provide service to eight destinations from Long Island MacArthur Airport (ISP) this summer. Breeze initially began serving Charleston, SC (CHS) and Norfolk, VA (ORF) non-stop from Long Island MacArthur Airport in February, 2022. In February, 2023, Breeze announced the addition of non-stop flights to Pittsburgh (PIT) and Richmond (RIC), which began in May. Additionally, this April, Breeze Airways added nonstop seasonal service to Portland, ME (PWM), and year-round service to Raleigh-Durham (RDU), both beginning in June. The carrier also offers same-plane BreezeThru flights to Jacksonville (JAX) and New Orleans (MSY) to further widen local travel options. Breeze Airways is entering its third year of service this month, and is adding non-stop routes on Long Island and across the country.
“We are delighted to see Breeze Airways grow and provide so many new destinations at Long Island MacArthur Airport. These flights are reasonably priced so local residents can enjoy easy getaways to fun new places. These are eight Seriously Nice destinations, on New York’s Seriously Nice Airline, from New York’s Seriously Nice Airport. The service will also bring visitors to Long Island which helps our local businesses thrive,” said Town of Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter.
“Since Breeze started flying two years ago, we have been serious about igniting positive change within a stagnant, oftentimes unfriendly, industry through our unique combination of low fares, flexible polices, efficient flights and Seriously Nice Team Members and experience,” said David Neeleman, Breeze Airways’ Founder and CEO. “We are going ‘all in’ this May to stake our claim in Nice Low-Cost Carrier or ‘NLCC’ by highlighting all the things that make up this unique model starting with dozens of new flight inaugurals and our lowest fares right ahead of the summer season,” he added.

Westhampton Free Library
The Westhampton Free Library is celebrating 126 years as your community center, providing a wide spectrum of programs and services to meet the needs of our population. In other words, the library is your hub for entertainment, information, and technology resources.

There is always something happening at our beautifully renovated Westhampton Free Library. The recent renovation project included the conversion of 2,500 square feet of unused space into usable space. Our children’s program room was expanded, and our main floor was reconfigured to accommodate a more efficient flow, additional book stacks, and a quiet study room.
Adults can learn about everything from history to travel as part of our ongoing Library Discussion series. They can also participate in our writers’ groups or join our book discussion groups. This summer, we are once again hosting our annual Monday Night Movies on the Great Lawn. Our health and exercise classes, some offered virtually and others at the beach or in the library, include Senior Total Fitness, Zumba Gold, Yoga, Chair Yoga, and Pilates.
Children can make discoveries in our second-floor Idea Place. Programming for children and families includes story time, reading clubs, music and movement classes for toddlers, cooking classes, craft workshops, and much more. You can also visit the Tween Scene that’s reserved just for kids ages 10-12. In our Teen space, young adults can read, play video games, watch movies, and visit with friends. The library has something to offer everyone at any age.
Our collection is diverse. Throughout the library, you will find DVDs, video games, magazines, newspapers, graphic novels, and, of course, lots of books. Our patrons also have access to an extensive collection of e-books and audiobooks that can be downloaded onto smartphones, laptops, and tablets. If you are having trouble figuring out how to use your personal electronic device, then visit our Library Geeks at our Inspiration Bar – the hours are available in the library newsletter. Continue your education through Universal Class, which offers over 500 online classes, all from the comfort of your own computer and on your own time schedule.
The Westhampton Free Library has been the community’s educational hub since it opened its doors in March of 1897 with a charter granted by the State of New York and signed by Melvil Dewey, creator of the Dewey Decimal System. In 1951, our original Library Avenue building opened and served the community for more than 100 years, providing generations of families with books, music, and programming.
In June 2010, our new library opened its doors to the residents of Westhampton, Westhampton Beach, Quogue, East Moriches, East Quogue, Eastport, Remsenburg, and Speonk. Our library is beautiful and environmentally responsible. The renovated building features energy-efficient lighting, occupancy sensors, high-efficiency heating and air conditioning units, plumbing that reduces water usage by 45%, and solar panels that generate 8% of our energy.
The Westhampton Free Library is a special place where families can come together to learn, read, or just have fun. This summer, we will offer hundreds of programs. Learn more about what we will be offering in our bimonthly newsletter that is mailed to residents, or visit us and pick up a copy. Additional information can be found on our website at www.westhamptonlibrary.net. Our phone number is 631-288-3335 and our fax number is 631-288-5715.

Charles Bourke Wildbank, native Long Island photorealism artist, holds degrees from Pratt and Columbia Universities in New York. He paints large canvases spanning several themes: portraits, seascapes, florals, still life and portraiture.

One of Wildbank’s major works available for viewing would be his large mural commissions with Cunard Line for the Queen Mary 2 cruise ship .
