COUNTY OF SUFFOLK
OFFICE OF THE COUNTY EXECUTIVE
Edward P. Romaine COUNTY EXECUTIVE
Dear Visitor,
Welcome to the Greater Westhampton community, the gateway to Long Island’s famous East End and one of the most beautiful places you can visit. There is something for everybody here, and after one visit you will plan your return repeatedly.
Some of the East End’s best restaurants are here, offering some of the most memorable meals to be found anywhere in New York State, often made with fresh local seafood, and Long Island farm-grown vegetables and paired with incredible wines from Long Island and around the world. You will not be disappointed when you want to visit the local shops. The shopping is extraordinary, with beautifully appointed boutiques and stores. A thriving arts community exists in the Greater Westhampton area as well. See a show at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center, which has quickly become the premiere live music venue on Long Island’s East End. Of course, the crown jewel of the community lies with the soft, golden sand and majestic shorelines of our world-famous beaches. Once you get “sand in your shoes”, you can never escape the call of the ocean and miles of open beach.
The Greater Westhampton has it all, and you are welcome to it. We will see you on the beach. Have a wonderful season.
Sincerely,
Edward P. Romaine Suffolk County Executive

YOU ARE NEVER TOO YOUNG TO PLAN
Estate planning is not just for the wealthy. Any person over the age of eighteen should be considering it. Everyone from students heading to college to their grandparents and great grandparents should be talking about having certain documents in place.
The first document to consider is a Health Care Proxy. A proxy says who you choose to make medical decisions if you cannot make them for yourself. Consider the college student who may be under anesthesia for a surgery or the older individual who has some dementia or other cognitive impairment; both circumstances call for an agent under a health care proxy to make decisions. Some choose to supplement the proxy with a Living Will, which will express your wishes with respect to end-of-life decision making. This document can direct that certain treatments be stopped if they are only serving to prolong your life where there is no reasonable expectation of recovery.
A Power of Attorney authorizes the person you appoint as agent to handle all business and financial decisions as if they were you – including but not limited to banking transactions, real estate matters, and any other instance where finances are involved. Most college freshmen are 18, newly deemed adults under the law. By executing a power of attorney, they can give
parents the ability to access their bank account and assist with other financial items that they have always assisted with when they were minors. A power of attorney can be simple or can confer more complex powers, depending on the situation. For older individuals who may be concerned about diminishing mental capacity, having a power of attorney should eliminate the need for the Court to appoint a guardian to handle financial affairs.
Beyond these documents that are concerned with your affairs while you are alive, it is also important to plan your estate for after death. This can be done through a Last Will and Testament (a “will”) or a Living Trust. A will determines how your assets are distributed at the time of your death. In its basic form, it outlines who will be in charge of your estate, the executor, and what persons or charities you will leave to, beneficiaries. There are several kinds of trusts you can create during your lifetime. Depending on how it is written, trust benefits can include avoiding the Courts after death, protecting assets for Medicaid planning, or reduction or elimination of estate taxes after death.
Estate planning is not just for the wealthy and it is not just for the old. Different stages of life and individual circumstances call for proper planning at all ages.

Long Island, as we all know, is a special place for many reasons. Whether it is time spent in the Hamptons, enjoying the outdoors, or catching those incredible days at our ocean beaches, not much can compare to a perfect day out-east.
Another fascinating aspect of Long Island is it’s world-class fishing. Even if you aren’t a fisher, enjoying local Long Island Seafood is an opportunity not to be missed. We are in a special place; the Labrador Current draws cold water species down from the North off of our shores, and the Gulf Stream Current brings Southern species up from the South. These two currents almost create a ballet of advances and releases throughout the year. Along with this ever-performing dance of ocean currents, comes some of the most bountiful, unique and sought-after seafood that we are known for around the world. So, let’s talk about all of these special, and sometimes hidden, local treasures!
Last year we had mentioned an exciting potential opportunity that has now arrived…Atlantic Royal Red Shrimp!!! Shrimp that are local to Long Island, WHAT?! Yes, it is true, off the coast of Long Island, in very deep water, there is a variety of shrimp called Royal Red Shrimp that migrate up and down the East Coast depending on the time of year. To harvest these shrimp, a special set of circumstances and harvest methods need to align to have a successful landing such as this.
At Haskell’s Seafood Market and Cafe on Main Street in Westhampton Beach, you can discover this new “shrimp lovers” opportunity and experience true wild-caught Long Island shrimp. Royal Reds are sweet and succulent. Their texture can be comparable to fresh lobster, and even more tender. Haskell’s Seafood offers Shrimp Cocktail, Shrimp Salads, Shrimp Rolls, Cajun Buttered Shrimp and Fried Royal Red Shrimp as an offering to explore the diversity of this lesser known deep sea treasure. As these local shrimp have not been treated with any preservatives that most other shrimp have been subject to, you will have a pure and true experience as to what local wild caught shrimp can taste like in it’s most honest form.
There is another deep-water Long Island fish that we see throughout the year called Golden Tilefish. If you have ever enjoyed Golden Tilefish before, you may have noticed that it too has a sweet and almost crustacean-like flavor to it. It just so happens that Golden Tilefish and Royal Red Shrimp reside in the same deep waters of the ocean… and you guessed it…Golden Tilefish LOVE to eat Royal Red Shrimp! At Haskell’s Seafood, we enjoy sharing the information of all these fascinating facts about our local waters.
Ever heard of “Pumpkin Swordfish”?! Highly sought after by Chefs, the Pumpkin Swordfish gets this name due to the color of it’s flesh. It’s not a different type of Swordfish by nature, but the color and flavor of swordfish changes due to what it is feeding on. I’ll bet at this point you have guessed right again! When Swordfish feed on a high diet of Shrimp, it in fact changes the flavor and color of the fish to possess a sweetness and pumpkin-like rosy hue. All of this is happening right off the coast of Long Island thanks to the Royal Red Shrimp!
“So why haven’t I heard of or seen Royal Red Shrimp at grocery stores of markets before?”, one might ask. There is a very good answer to that. Some of our local seafood opportunities are boutique, meaning that some things just haven’t been marketed or made commercially viable due to the specialized effort that is needed to make a harvest possible. Haskell’s Seafood, founded by Captain Peter Haskell, maintains direct relationships with our fleet of fishing boats on the East End of Long Island which makes it possible for us to rediscover seafood opportunities that one may have never seen. Haskell’s Seafood is not only committed to only working with the local seafood harvests of Long Island, but we are a direct conduit to our local fisheries with no one in the middle. Local seafood is harvested, Haskell’s Seafood thoughtfully prepares, and we then want you to be the direct recipient of our East End’s bounty!
Much of our fisheries are about telling its story. Many of us have our own, growing up and fishing on the bays of Long Island, bringing the catch back to the house for an evening feast with family. It truly is our heritage on Long Island that we are talking about and sharing that story keeps heritage alive and well. We encourage this type of conversation at Haskell’s Seafood which often leads to education passing back and forth, awareness of our surroundings, and a responsible role that is played in the big/small picture of our Local Seafood Landings. I often say to myself, “What better of a life could you live, sharing all of this with others, experiencing the seasonal offerings year after year, and celebrating life on Long Island the same way it has been done for centuries, but doing it today and each day thereafter.” We look forward to all of your visits at Haskell’s Seafood this season and thank YOU for being a part of the big/small picture here on the East End of Long Island!

Th e Greater Westhampton communities are famous for their Atlantic Ocean white sugar sand beaches on the barrier island known as Dune Road. Which community you live in determines which beaches you can actually access. The Villages of Westhampton Beach, Quogue and West Hampton Dunes each have their own municipal beaches for their village residents while the surrounding hamlets and have fewer free options available to them. In addition to these municipal beaches, there are ample private beach clubs and hotel related accommodations that will offer great beach experiences in the Greater Westhampton communities.

Long Island MacArthur Airport Takes Off: Long Island’s Hometown Airport Expands with New Destinations and Major Upgrades
ISP- Long Island’s hometown airport is booming and bringing in more and more exciting products and services to our community. Since 2015, the airport has doubled the number of air carriers serving the Long Island Community, and more than doubled the number of nonstop destinations. Airlines are investing more into ISP. It is the fastest-growing airport among its northeast competitors based on available seats. This year, our carriers are serving three new nonstop destinations; Breeze Airways launched Vero Beach, FL service; Frontier Airlines is now serving Atlanta, GA; and Southwest Airlines announced Miami, FL service that will begin this fall.
While many air carriers have been rapidly consolidating service, ISP has enjoyed tremendous growth, including the latest announcement from New York’s hometown airline JetBlue, which will begin service at MacArthur Airport to three destinations in Florida: Ft. Lauderdale, Orlando, and West Palm Beach this fall.
“It’s no secret that Long Island loves JetBlue. For years, residents have asked…and we’ve been listening. As the Town Supervisor, I can say that we are thrilled to embark on this new partnership. We are committed to ensuring the success of our business partners at Long Island MacArthur Airport. Our airport is one of our region’s greatest economic assets, and JetBlue’s success at ISP will certainly enrich our community and beyond. Long Island cannot wait to open its doors to the visitors that will come to New York by way of ISP- Long Island’s hometown airport,” said Islip Town Supervisor, Angie Carpenter.
The largest catchment area for JetBlue credit card holders is Long Island, and of many those travelers have used ISP’s competitor airports for years. Now, they will have the option to choose ISP, which offers the highest level of customer experience.
“We have all worked hard to ensure Long Island travelers have more choices for nonstop destinations. Our hometown airport is convenient, has efficient security lines, and provides an overall stress-free travel experience. Long Islanders have waited for New York’s hometown airline, JetBlue for 24 years, and this is a great day for our community and MacArthur Airport!” said Shelley LaRose-Arken, Long Island MacArthur Airport Commissioner.
operational efficiencies, climate control, new baggage claim units, vestibule doors, flooring and wall covering, new fixtures, finishes and furnishings that capture the beauty of Long Island.
The airport completed over $100M in capital projects including the rehabilitation of airfield taxiway and runway surfaces, a Ground Transportation Center and Walkway, and a Fire Rescue Building. “With the Supervisor’s stewardship we have cash reserves to help us advance significant projects. These projects positioned the airport to be ready to welcome new carriers,” said LaRoseArken.
NORTH TERMINAL?
The airport is not stopping here. For more than 60 years, Long Islanders have talked about relocating the terminal closer to the Ronkonkoma Train Station. Long Island Railroad has just completed more than $12B in improvements to the rail system, giving travelers a one seat ride to and from Penn Station, NY and connections to Grand Central. The addition of an 1800 ft. pedestrian walkway between the train station and north terminal would create a true train-to-plane connection.
“The airport’s success depends on the support and commitment from our community to continue to use ISP,” said Supervisor Carpenter. “Help us spread the word about ISP – Long Island’s hometown airport, and check out our new website www.FlyMacArthur.com,” said the Supervisor.
ABOUT LONG ISLAND MACARTHUR AIRPORT:
MacArthur Airport is on Long Island approximately 50 miles from New York City. It is the closest airport to 2.8 million Long Island residents, and to world- renowned attractions including the famous Hamptons, Wine Country, lighthouses, Fire Island, excellent theatre, award-winning restaurants, and Gatsby-era mansions. The Town of Islip owns and operates the airport, served by Breeze Airways, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue and Southwest Airlines. Access to the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) makes getting around Nassau and Suffolk counties convenient. Train service from the Ronkonkoma / MacArthur Airport LIRR to New York City provides frequent transport. Long Island MacArthur Airport employs 6000 people directly and indirectly, with a $16M annual operating budget and an economic impact of $600M to the region and local economy.
“We have been hard at work improving all aspects of the airport and have prepared our airport for better times. We continue to market Long Island’s airport to passengers and airlines to help grow customer demand for ISP,” said Commissioner LaRose-Arken. The airport will complete $26M in terminal improvements that offers greater energy and

Why Air Tags Are a Traveler’s Best Companion
In today’s technology-driven world, air tags have emerged as essential tools for travelers, offering a practical way to enhance security and peace of mind. These small, lightweight devices use Bluetooth technology to connect with your smartphone, allowing you to monitor the location of your belongings in real-time through an app.
One of the primary concerns for travelers is the safety of their luggage. Lost or stolen luggage can quickly turn a dream vacation into a nightmare. By placing an air tag in your suitcase, you can track its location instantly, providing valuable information to airlines if your luggage goes missing. This real-time tracking can significantly reduce the anxiety associated with waiting for your bags at the carousel, as you’ll receive an alert as soon as your luggage appears.
Personal items such as wallets, passports, and electronics are often carried during travel, and losing any of these can disrupt your trip. Attaching air tags to these items adds an extra layer of security. For example, if you accidentally leave your wallet in a café, the air tag will alert you and guide you back to its location.
Air tags are particularly useful for group travel, helping to manage multiple belongings. By tagging each person’s luggage and important items, group leaders can ensure that nothing is left behind. This is especially beneficial for families with chil-
dren or large tour groups.
Solo travelers, too, can benefit from the reassurance provided by air tags, allowing them to monitor their items closely. Whether exploring a bustling city or relaxing on a beach, knowing your belongings are secure and easily locatable offers peace of mind.
Traveling with high-value items such as cameras, laptops, and jewelry requires extra precautions. Air tags can enhance security for these possessions, helping authorities recover items more efficiently in case of theft.
Using air tags effectively involves purchasing from a reputable brand, setting up the tags according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and attaching them securely to your belongings. Monitoring your items through the app and setting up alerts can further ensure accurate tracking.
Air tags are invaluable travel accessories, providing real-time tracking and enhanced security. Whether you’re a frequent flyer or an occasional traveler, air tags can make your journeys stress-free and enjoyable.
