On August 10 and 11, The Westhampton Beach Historical Society will host a free Revolutionary War Living History Event on the Great Lawn in Westhampton Beach. American and British soldiers in period uniforms will demonstrate infantry and cavalry drills, artillery, skirmish and more. Michael Paraskevas
Michael Paraskevas has a big announcement. This September the Southampton Arts Center will exhibit 40 years of Michael’s work covering animation, children’s books, illustration and painting. The large exhibit will feature animation sketches from Maggie and the Ferocious Beast. His new book will be presented: Paint Your World. It will be available at the museum in a special limited signed edition.
The exhibit will run from September 21st to November 10th. The big opening night will be on the 21st. Be there. The Museum is located at 25 Jobs Lane, Southampton, NY 11968. 631-283-0967. Michael Paraskevas has been an illustrator since graduating from The School of Visual Arts in 1984. He then went on to receive his MFA from SVA in 1986. He’s worked for most major magazines including Sports Illustrated, Time, Town & Country, New York Magazine and Rolling Stone, to name but a few. Michael Paraskevas has also illustrated and written 24 children’s books over the years with his mother, Betty. The two went on to create and write the animated television series Maggie and the Ferocious Beast for Nickelodeon. Two of their other books were also made into animated series: Marvin the Tap Dancing Horse for PBS and Kids from Room 402 for Fox Family. Betty passed away in 2010 and Mickey continues to work on animated projects for a variety of companies. His large scale beach paintings have sold all over the world through his gallery in the Hamptons. Michael Paraskevas works in acrylic, oil, watercolor or whatever the mood suits him at the moment. He also works digitally since the demands of the current illustration market requires quickness and the ability to change things at the last minute.

Eastern Long Island Executives (ELIE) is a regional networking organization dedicated to the promotion of business on the East End of Long Island. It started over 30 years ago as a monthly networking and educational forum with dinner meetings held at the Culinary Institute of Suffolk Community College. In December 1998 ELIE was established under the laws of New York State as a not for profit corporation. Following the severe economic downturn at the end of 2008 ELIE changed the format of its organization to a regional networking group with one member per industry. Thee Greater Westhampton communities are famous for their Atlantic Ocean white sugar sand beaches on the barrier island known as Dune Road. Which community you live in determines which beaches you can actually access. The Villages of Westhampton Beach, Quogue and West Hampton Dunes each have their own municipal beaches for their village residents while the surrounding hamlets and have fewer free options available to them. In addition to these municipal beaches, there are ample private beach clubs and hotel related accommodations that will offer great beach experiences in the Greater Westhampton communities.
VILLAGE OF WESTHAMPTON BEACH ROGERS BEACH Full-service Main Village Beach Pavilion just south of the Beach Lane Bridge is complete with public restrooms, snack bar concession, changing rooms with lockers as well as both indoor and outdoor showers. Lifeguards are on duty during summer season. LASHLEY BEACH @ JETTY 4 Limited-service Village Beach Pavilion with public restrooms and outdoor showers. This is a preferred local surf spot with a more relaxed atmosphere also with lifeguards on duty during the summer season. Both of these Village of Westhampton Beach locations maintain parking lots and are accessible by permit for Village residents at no cost. Non-resident beach stickers may be obtained at the Municipal Building on Fridays between the hours of 4-7pm, and Saturdays from 9am to 1pm. The Village extends beach privileges as a courtesy to taxpayers and year-round residents residing in the hamlets of Westhampton, Quiogue, Remsenburg and Speonk for a fee. Summer renters inside the Incorporated Village’s boundaries may obtain beach privileges for a fee. Summer renters in the hamlets of Westhampton, Remsenburg, Speonk and Quiogue may obtain beach privileges for a fee. At no time is random parking permitted on Dune Road for public beach access. VILLAGE OF WEST HAMPTON DUNES The he beaches of the Village of West Hampton Dunes have had the honor of being designated as one of the top best restored beach in the United States following years of both short-term and long-term re-nourishment. Access to the Atlantic Ocean beach for Village residents and leaseholders ONLY is via a series of boardwalks over the dunes throughout the village. Lifeguards are not provided and at no time is random parking permitted on Dune Road for public beach access. PIKE’S BEACH This Town of Southampton limited service beach located in the Village of West Hampton Dunes is operational for residents and leaseholders within the Town of Southampton as well as non-residents. It was opened in the late 1990s after having been closed for more than 10 years. This 400 foot beach offers lifeguard supervised swimming, sunbathing, and bathroom facilities. Lifeguard on duty between 10 am and 5 pm. Parking Fee: Charged 10 am to 5 pm. A permit is required 7 days a week from June 1st through September 15. Seasonal Beach Fees for Southampton Town Residents $30 / Vehicle, Senior Residents $20 / Vehicle, Non-Resident $225 / Vehicle and NON-RESIDENT DAILY PASSES $20 / per day. For access information to Pike’s Beach in West Hampton Dunes as well as Ponquogue Beach and Tiani Beach further west in the communities of East Quogue and Hampton Bays, contact the Town of Southampton Department of Parks and recreation at 631-728-8585 CUPSOGUE BEACH This 296 acre Suffolk County barrier beach park offers lifeguard-supervised swimming, sunbathing on white sand beaches and some of the finest saltwater bass fishing to be had on Long Island. A food concession, restrooms, first aid center, showers and changing rooms are all conveniently situated at Cupsogue’s pavillion. Campers and recreational vehicles are permitted along the access road running parallel to the outer beach. Diving is permitted at slack tide on the bay side of the park only. Westhampton Free Library T
he Westhampton Free Library is your community center, providing a wide spectrum of programs and services to meet the needs of the population we serve. In other words, the Library is your entertainment, information and technology resource.
There is always something happening at the Westhampton Free Library. Adults can learn about everything from history to travel during our Lunch and Learn and Delicious Discussion sessions. They can also participate in our writers’ groups or join book and game clubs. This summer, we are hosting fabulous bus trips and Monday Night Movies on the Great Lawn. Our health and exercise classes, some offered at the beach, include Senior Total Fitness, Senior Tai Chi, Zumba Gold, Yoga, Pilates and Meditation. On our second floor, you’ll discover the Idea Place, where children and parents come to learn and grow. Programming for children and families includes story time, reading clubs, music and movement classes for toddlers, cooking classes, craft workshops and much more. You can also visit the Tween Scene, an alcove that’s reserved just for kids ages 1012. In our Teen space, young adults can read, play video games, watch movies and visit with friends. The Library has something to offer everyone at any age. Our collection is diversified. Throughout the Library, you will find DVDs, digital audio and video players, video games, magazines, newspapers, graphic novels and, of course, lots of books. Our patrons also have access to an extensive collection of e-books and e-audiobooks that can be downloaded to smartphones, tablets, or computers. If you are having trouble figuring out how to use your personal electronic device, then visit our Library Geeks at our Inspiration Bar – the hours are available in the Library newsletter. Continue your education through Universal Class and Lynda.com, which offers over 500 online classes all from the comfort of your own computer and on your own time schedule. The Westhampton Free Library has been the community’s educational hub since it opened its doors in March 1897 with a charter granted by the State of New York and signed by Melvil Dewey, creator of the Dewey Decimal System. In 1951, our original Library Avenue building was opened and served the community for more than 100 years, providing generations of families with books, music and programming. In June 2010, our new state-of-the-art Library opened its doors to the residents of Westhampton, Westhampton Beach, Quogue, East Moriches, East Quogue, Eastport, Remsenburg and Speonk. Our Library is beautiful and environmentally responsible. The building features efficient lighting, occupancy sensors, high-efficiency heating and air conditioning units, plumbing that reduces water usage by 45% and solar panels that generate 8% of our energy. The Westhampton Free Library is a special place where families can come together to learn, read or just have fun. This summer, we will offer hundreds of programs. Learn more about what we will be offering in our bimonthly newsletter that is mailed to residents, available online or visit us and pick up a copy. Teen Battle of the Books
Meetings will take place on Mondays and Fridays in July. Together, we will read eight books and battle against other libraries in Suffolk County. The final battle will take place on Monday, August 12.
Community Service
The Teen department has a host of community service opportunities available all summer long. Teens can make decorations for the Westhampton Care Center, write book reviews, create educational book marks, help clean and organize the library, make toys and beds for the animal shelter or help sort food pantry donations.

When It Comes to Airports – Smaller Is Often Better Shelley LaRose-Arken, Commissioner Long Island MacArthur Airport

ustomer service experts and air travelers rate New York City Airports as some of the worst in the nation. In a J.D. Power report from September, 2018 La Guardia (LGA) ranks last in the country in terms of customer satisfaction at “large” airports. John F. Kennedy (JFK) and Newark Liberty International (EWR) take the bottom spots in the “mega” category.
To be fair, other mammoth airports around the country, especially in metro areas with multiple airports, don’t beat NYC by much. And when Shelley LaRose-Arken larger airports try to improve, as with current massive projects at JFK, LGA, and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), construction frequently adds to the travel hassles for customers during the process. Even with improvements, large airports keep getting larger and more congested, while smaller, ‘secondary’ airports are stepping up to better serve customers. That’s why passengers tend to prefer smaller airports to their larger neighbors in the J.D. Power report. These alternative airports also are attractive to innovative startup airlines looking to disrupt the traditional aviation business model. Serving convenient airports means less competition with major air carriers while still accessing metro area passengers. Service between secondary airports, and from secondary to primary airports, shows promise for sustainable profitability for a new breed of high-frills, low-cost carriers.
more nimble when it comes to modernizing facilities and using evolving technology. This benefits the airlines and enhances the overall customer experience. Examples are improvements to transportation facilities that connect airports to rail lines and innovative providers such as Uber and Lyft. Secondary airports can also recognize the value and benefit of updating to digital signage and keeping customer convenience and technology as a priority in all new projects. Smaller develops marketing partnerships. Since smaller airports are more agile and efficient, they have the flexibility to work closely and forge strong relationships with the business community and destination marketing organizations to increase awareness and demand for the airport. An example is ISP’s partnering with Discover Long Island on a cooperative marketing campaign in the Baltimore/Washington market that enables broader branding reach. These groups’ working together also provides marketplace insight that is valuable to new business and start-up airlines. Smaller conveniently connects with transportation and rail. Since many smaller airports enjoy central metro locations, connecting rail service is another big plus and possibility. Saving customers time is a big asset that smaller airports can provide. Connecting to rail also reduces traffic congestion and gets travelers moving to and from airports quickly and efficiently. ISP enjoys a one-seat train ride to Manhattan on Long Island Rail Road less than two miles from the airport entrance. Train-to-plane initiatives, along with network transportation options, give smaller airports like ISP a competitive advantage. Smaller brings amenities. Survey results at ISP show that customers appreciate new amenities that make their experience more enjoyable and productive. Offering close-in, affordable parking and free Wi-Fi are examples of how smaller airports can provide big benefit to their customers.
Smaller metro airports capitalize on this opportunity in a number of ways, using strategies that deliver on the competitive advantage that smaller can be better: Smaller provides value. Smaller airports can offer airlines and customers cost benefits. At Long Island MacArthur Airport (ISP), for example, airlines on average pay 60% less to operate than at JFK, and 45% less than at LGA. This translates into real opportunity for new airlines looking to compete. And passengers typically pay less at secondary airports too. Fares to top 50 destinations from ISP, for instance, average 3% to 6% below those at LGA and JFK; add in the lower cost of parking, and the advantage increases to about 25%. Financially healthy smaller airports can be run with a business mindset that pleases both airlines and passengers. Smaller is efficient for airlines. Alternative airports can operate with a level of efficiency, on the ground and in the air, that is nearly impossible for giant facilities to match. For example, for common destinations flown from ISP, JFK, and LGA, airlines must allow on average an additional 18.6 minutes (average extra taxi time plus average extra flight time) from JFK, and 17.7 minutes from LGA, compared to ISP. Small preserves operational superiority. Congestion and lines are minimal. Airfield work can be done at night to minimize effects on airlines and customers. Smaller can be high tech and high touch. Smaller airports are able to be

Smaller airports can scan the environment for potential grants and funding just like the giant airports and can be more nimble at forming coalitions to secure support for airfield and terminal work at the local, state and federal level. At ISP: • U.S. Senator Charles Schumer and State Senator Monica Martinez united with local leaders in February to urge FAA funding support for an Airport Improvement Project grant at ISP to fund a terminal expansion to accommodate current and expected traffic in its west concourse. • New York Governor Andrew Cuomo earlier this year announced $800,000 in New York State funding for improvements to ISP’s Ground Vehicle Transportation Center to the main terminal building. The project will better accommodate ground transport providers and further improve the customer experience at ISP. These improvement projects upgrade facilities, give innovative airlines new opportunities, boost local economies and increase customer satisfaction. Together these strategies help smaller airports play a big role in improving air transportation and customer satisfaction. The result in New York and elsewhere will be higher rankings and an overall better experience for airport customers.
