A MESSAGE TO OUR COMMUNITY

DEAR RESIDENTS OF THE WOODLANDS,

As we look forward to celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Woodlands, The Woodlands Township Board of Directors extends our heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you for your unwavering community spirit and dedication. This milestone is a testament to the strength and unity that define The Woodlands. It is with great pride that we reflect on our journey and look forward to our future.

Fifty years ago, The Woodlands was envisioned as a vibrant, close-knit community where nature and neighborly bonds intertwine. From our beginnings as one dream and one village, The Woodlands has grown into a flourishing community filled with diverse families, more than 150 parks, and a strong sense of belonging. Our history is rich with stories of how we’ve come together to support one another through triumphs and challenges alike.

Our past is marked by shared moments of joy and collaboration—from the founding days and the establishment of our cherished traditions to the countless community events and gatherings that have brought us together. These memories are not just chapters in a book but living parts of the fabric that makes The Woodlands a special place to call home.

As The Woodlands celebrates our golden anniversary, we also look forward with excitement to what the future holds. The spirit of The Woodlands is ever-evolving. Our commitment to fostering a welcoming, inclusive, and vibrant community remains steadfast. Together, we will continue to build on our legacy, embracing new opportunities and challenges with the same enthusiasm and togetherness that have brought us to this moment.

CELEBRATING THE WOODLANDS HISTORY OF THE BOTTOM OF THE LAKE

As we approach the milestone anniversary, we look back on the most well-known amenity in our community, Lake Woodlands, and how its history took shape. Thanks to Howard Hughes and Laura Landsbaum for information in this article.

The original 1972 plan drawn up for The Woodlands included Lake Woodlands.

“Everyone on the team thought that a major water amenity would be good for the community,” according to Robert Heineman, former vice president of planning and development for The Woodlands Development Company and Howard Hughes. “The space between Woodlands Parkway and Research Forest Drive is about two miles, and the goal was to be able to see the lake from both roads. As you’re traveling along Woodlands Parkway, while the dam is separate from the road structure, you see over the dam and you see the expanse of the lake every time you come into The Woodlands.”

The Army Corps of Engineers approved the permit for the lake early in the planning, but the permit ended up getting renewed several times, according to Virgil Yoakum. Yoakum was the senior project engineer for the Lake Woodlands project. The lake site had been used as a construction storage area, and in 1983 was used to collect forest debris from Hurricane Alicia.

Shortly after that, while Houston was in the midst of a depression, The Woodlands founder George Mitchell called Plato Pappas, then the first civil engineer to work for The Woodlands Development Company.

“It’s time to build the lake,” Mitchell told Pappas, according to Yoakum.

Zachary Construction had equipment available and idle workers because of the region’s economic downturn. Construction began on Lake Woodlands with about 750,000 cubic yards of dirt removed to create a lake that would be eight feet deep.

“For a lake in this climate to be healthy for fish, you need a depth of at least eight feet,” Heineman noted.

That excavated dirt was placed along the shoreline, and then trenched for a concrete pour to create the lip of the 200-acre lake. Lake Woodlands is about two miles long and at least 400 feet wide at its shortest width.

Before Lake Woodlands held water, The Woodlands held something called the last annual Bottom of the Lake festival, which was created by Randy Woods, the former vice president of public relations for The Woodlands Development Company. The three-day festival took place May 17 to May 19, 1985. Activities included a skydiving exhibition, a four jet flyover, muscle truck tours through the lake bottom, mud sculpting, tugof-war and mudslinging featuring local politicians.

The iconic sculpture, “Rise of the Midgard Serpent” by Marc Rosenthal, was unveiled at the celebration before the whole lake was actually filled. The sculpture is made up of welded steel plates and recycled pipe from Hughes Tool & Die. It’s 35 feet long and weighs 1.5 tons. The six sections of the sculpture are elevated on concrete pillars, similar to bridge supports.

Cynthia Woods Mitchell bought this fitting sculpture at what was then Houston’s Westheimer Colony Art Festival. Jim Wendt, pictured above, who served as the director of planning for The Woodlands Development Company, was charged with placing the sculpture in just the right location.

After the celebration, engineers closed the dam at Woodlands Parkway. Nearly immediately afterward, a heavy rainstorm came and literally filled Lake Woodlands from upstream flow.

The lake has been a part of the community for nearly 40 years now as The Woodlands itself approaches its 50th anniversary. The Woodlands just wouldn’t be the same without Lake Woodlands, its fun history and its very own sea serpent.

The Woodlands 50th Anniversary events planned for the week of October 14-19 will include:

MONDAY, OCTOBER 14: KICK-OFF

Community leaders will kick-off the celebratory week with proclamations from state, regional and local officials, as well as a dedication of a time capsule to commemorate the historic milestone.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 15: DAY OF GIVING

Community service and philanthropy are engrained within the fabric of The Woodlands. Volunteer opportunities and ways to give back to the community will be posted on the 50th Anniversary website at TheWoodlands.com early this fall in collaboration with Interfaith of The Woodlands, the first nonprofit organization in the history of our community.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 16: TREE DEDICATION

Greenspace and environmental stewardship are a critical part of The Woodlands. A beautiful, 1,000-gallon hardwood tree of significance will be dedicated at Northshore Park, along with the planting of a 100-gallon tree in each residential village in partnership with the Village Associations.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 17: MURAL UNVEILING

A new mural along The Woodlands Waterway will be unveiled, signifying the importance and impact of the arts in our community. A local artist will be selected in collaboration with The Woodlands Art Council.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18: 50TH CONCERT

Presented by Howard Hughes - Lyle Lovett and His Large Band will headline this free event, featuring Hayes Carll and Jack Ingram at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, one of the top ranked outdoor amphitheaters in the world. Registration for priority access to tickets is now open at TheWoodlands.com, along with concert details.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 19: GRAND CELEBRATION

On the Cover

It’s hard to imagine today so much going on at the bottom of a lake, but a fun game of Tug of War was one of the many memorable activities held during the Bottom of the Lake Festival in 1985. Pictured right is Joel Deretchin, namesake of Deretchin Elementary, who served The Woodlands in many capacities for over 33 years.

October 19 marks the actual 50th anniversary date of The Woodlands. A grand public extravaganza, produced by The Woodlands Township, will be held at Northshore Park and Hughes Landing Band Shell. This free, familyfriendly event will culminate with an innovative high-tech drone and fireworks show, lighting the sky above Lake Woodlands. The drone show and fireworks are presented by Woodforest National Bank and Waste Connections.

FREE FARE FRIDAYS AN INVITATION TO #TRYTOWNSHIPTRANSIT

It’s

Commute Solutions

Month, and we’re celebrating by making your Friday commute a great experience. “Free Fare Fridays” is an initiative dedicated to enhancing your daily life while saving you money. Whether you’re new to public transit or a seasoned rider, we invite you to #TryTownshipTransit and discover the myriad benefits that transit can offer.

Free Fare Friday will offer free trips for any passengers who wish to take The Woodlands Express on any Friday in September, no tickets required. Whether you are a seasoned passenger on the Express, or a first-time rider, Free Fare Friday is offered to anyone, (passengers under 12 must be accompanied by an adult), and seats are available on a first-come first-served basis. Our regular schedule and routes still apply, so we encourage new riders to familiarize themselves with both prior to arrival.

To encourage everyone to experience these benefits firsthand, we are offering Free Fare Fridays throughout September. Whether you’re heading to work, school, or exploring the city, save money and discover the convenience of public transit.

Public transportation is more than just a means to an end; it’s a pathway to a better quality of life. Using transit can save you money on fuel, parking and vehicle maintenance costs. It can reduce stress by helping you avoid the hassle of traffic jams and parking woes. It can give you time back by allowing you to read, catch up on work, or close your eyes and relax for a few minutes at the end of a long day.

Commute Solutions Month is not just about individual benefits; it’s about coming together as a community to achieve common goals. By choosing transit, we can collectively reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality and support transit-related progress.

We encourage all community members to particpate. Try out different transit routes, share your experiences and spread the word about the benefits of public transportation. Together, we can make a significant impact on our community and the environment.

Celebrate Commute Solutions Month and #TryTownshipTransit. Take a step toward a smarter, greener and more connected future. See you on the bus!

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT

GIVE CRIME AND DRUGS A GOING-AWAY PART

The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Services invites everyone to join their neighbors and public safety personnel on Sunday, October 6, 2024, for a night out against crime. National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer. National Night Out creates a sense of community by bringing residents and the public safety agencies that serve The Woodlands Township together under positive circumstances.

Participating in National Night Out since 1990, The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Services, public safety and the community have won numerous awards for how we unite and celebrate our police-community partnerships. On Sunday, October 6, 2024, from 3 to 6 p.m., residents are asked to lock their doors, turn on their outside lights and gather with their neighbors. When your neighborhood participates in National Night Out, it accomplishes one of the first steps in crime prevention, “neighbors knowing neighbors.”

Take this opportunity to show that your neighborhood is united against crime. How you celebrate is up to you. It can be as simple as providing popsicles, or as elaborate as playing games and hosting a barbecue. All you need to do is gather your neighbors and participate! Local law enforcement and The Woodlands Fire Department will briefly visit with many of the neighborhoods that register their parties with The Woodlands Township.

Be an early bird and register your neighborhood party by Friday, September 6, 2024, to be eligible for a prize! The final day to

Y

register and to receive a public safety visit is Friday, September 27, 2024. If you wish, The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Services can provide you with National Night Out party supplies. Available supplies may include balloons, giveaways, yard signs, party ideas and more!

Nonperishable food items collected at your National Night Out party can be dropped off directly at Interfaith, 4242 Interfaith Way, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., October 7 through October 11, 2024. Please make sure to mention National Night Out when giving your donations to Interfaith. Together we can make a difference to alleviate hunger in South Montgomery County!

Support our military and collect items at your National Night Out neighborhood party. A full list of items needed is available in the party packet for registered parties. Collected items will be donated to Boots For Troops. Donated items will be collected at The Woodlands Township, 2801 Technology Forest Boulevard, October 7 -11, 2024, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The ID the Burglar contest is a fun activity designed to promote neighborhood cooperation, crime prevention awareness, and to test a person’s skill and accuracy in identifying a suspect. One party from each village will be drawn from the parties registered to participate in the challenge. A “burglar,” along with a “good guy” will be escorted by a Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office deputy to the party chosen from each village. The neighborhood must work together as a team to help identify the burglar!

FALL PLANTING TIPS TO TRANSFORM YOUR HOME LANDSCAPE

FALL IS THE PERFECT TIME

to focus on your home landscape wish list. In our humid, subtropical climate, now is the ideal planting time for many native plants, edibles, bulbs and trees. Not sure where to start? Follow these tips:

FILL GAPS WITH LOCAL PLANTS

Take a walk around your landscape and note any gaps or areas lacking appeal. Perennials such as beebalm, fall asters, purple coneflower, and grasses such as Gulf muhly, bushy blue stem and miscanthus can be planted now to add needed color and interest for months to come. In addition to their many beautiful colors, native plants add habitat that welcomes pollinators, birds and other beloved wildlife to your home oasis.

TRY BRANCHING UP AND OUT

If your landscape is missing spring-blooming understory trees such as redbud, Mexican plum, or dogwood, plant them in cool weather. This will ensure they have time to get established before the heat hits next summer. No space for a tree? Consider adding trumpet vine or coral vine to add a new vertical feature to your fall landscape.

CONSIDER WHAT YOU WANT ON YOUR PLATE

Make the most of your space by adding edibles to established planting beds and containers. Perfect fall edibles include kale, Swiss Chard, spinach, peas, lettuces and radishes. These plants are beautiful and easy to grow in the space you have.

TUCK IN SOME BULBS

Plant for the future by adding perennial bulbs such as crinums, rain lilies, oxblood lilies, spider lilies and narcissus to add a burst of color and delight the senses next season.

To learn more about perennial bulbs for our local planting zone, join us for “Heirloom Bulbs for Today.” Chris Weisinger, owner of the Southern Bulb Company, will share his lifelong expertise, personal experiences and knowledge of heirloom bulbs. Our free, online class will be held on Saturday, October 12, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Register online.

BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR

by ensuring you have working smoke detetctors in your home. October is designated as Fire Prevention Month, a time for communities and households to take proactive steps in safeguarding against the devastating effects of fires.

At the heart of these efforts lies a simple yet indispensable device: the smoke detector. Properly installed and maintained, these detectors provide critical alerts that can mean the difference between escape and tragedy.

Be a good neighbor this fall by making sure you have smoke detectors installed on every level of your home, including in or near sleeping areas. Monthly testing, yearly battery replacements and periodic cleaning will help to keep them reliable and ready.

In addition, make sure your home landscaping complies with The Woodlands Covenants and Standards, keeping your yard free from extra pine needles and brush that can easily ignite in dry conditions.
