The Woodlands Township Board of Directors will hold a strategic planning workshop this May, with a primary focus on shaping the 2026 Budget. The workshop offers an important opportunity for the Board to discuss long-term priorities, evaluate emerging needs and set a financial course that supports the continued success of our community.
Over the years, the Board has guided the Township to make significant investments in areas that reflect resident priorities—including enhanced law enforcement services, increased funding for reforestation and expanded resources for parks and pathways. These Board discussions help ensure that every dollar is spent with purpose, aligned with the values that make The Woodlands such a distinctive and well-regarded place to live.
As one of the nation’s premier master-planned communities, The Woodlands has a unique model of governance and service delivery. The Woodlands Township works within a limited scope to deliver services such as covenant administration, transportation, trash and recycling, visitor services, economic development, parks and recreation and public safety—with a strong emphasis on preserving green space and quality of life.
This year’s workshop will be moderated by Strategic Government Resources (SGR), a recognized leader in public sector consulting and organizational development. With deep expertise in facilitating effective planning for local governments, SGR will help guide the conversation as the Board considers funding strategies and community priorities for the year ahead.
As we look ahead, we’re proud to share that The Woodlands continues to earn national recognition. In Niche’s 2025 rankings, The Woodlands was named:
#2 Best City to Live in America
#2 Best City to Raise a Family in America
#3 Best Community to Buy a House in America
These honors reflect our shared commitment to excellence. Thank you for being an essential part of what makes The Woodlands a truly remarkable place to live. We look forward to a successful and memorable summer.
Sincerely,
THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS TYPICALLY MEETS on the third Thursday and the fourth Wednesday of each month at Town Hall, 2801 Technology Forest Blvd., 6 p.m., unless posted otherwise. Residents are encouraged to attend.

On Saturday, May 10, 2025, Northshore Park will host the highly anticipated Woodlands Triathlon, a USA Triathlon (USAT) sanctioned event. With a field of 1,200 athletes ranging from beginners to nationally ranked triathletes, this sprintdistance race promises an exciting challenge for participants of all levels.
The event begins with a 500-meter open water swim, followed by a scenic 12.8-mile bike ride through The Woodlands and concludes with a 5K run. After crossing the finish line, athletes and spectators can enjoy a festive awards party featuring live music, food and fun at Northshore Park.
John McGowan, Director of Parks and Recreation for The Woodlands Township, shared the motivation behind his entry into the sport: "I oversaw The Woodlands Triathlon’s swim course for years, but it was the addition of Ironman Texas that inspired me. After seeing the last finishers at Ironman Arizona, I thought, ‘I should give this a try.’"
For those training for the race, McGowan offers clear advice: "For a sprint triathlon, aim for 5-7 hours of training a week. If you're aiming for longer events, your training time will naturally increase." As for the perfect race-day weather? "Clear skies with a cool 50-degree temperature, and water that’s just chilly enough for a refreshing swim but not too cold for comfort."
Nutrition also plays a key role in training. "It's all about staying hydrated and fueling with the right calories," says McGowan. As for his favorite part of the race, it's the swim. "Having swum through high school and worked as a lifeguard, I feel most comfortable in the water."
The Woodlands Triathlon offers a challenging yet accessible experience for athletes of all levels, making it the perfect event for newcomers and seasoned competitors alike. For more information and to register, please visit our website.

swept through in July last summer, The Woodlands didn’t face coastal storm surge—but we did face the harsh reality of high winds, fallen trees and widespread power outages. Some homes were without electricity for days. It was a wake-up call. Here in The Woodlands, extended outages are one of the most likely emergency scenarios we face. If Beryl taught us anything, it’s that being prepared isn’t optional—it’s essential.
PREPARE NOW FOR POWER OUTAGES
Make sure you can take care of your household for at least three days. Build an emergency kit with:
• Flashlights or lanterns
• Battery-powered NOAA weather radio
• Extra batteries and power banks
• Shelf-stable food, snacks and pet food
• One gallon of water per person per day
• First aid kit, prescriptions, hygiene supplies
• Personal care items
• Copies of IDs and insurance papers
DON’T OVERLOOK FLOOD INSURANCE
Flooding can happen well inland. Visit msc.fema.gov to check your risk and floodsmart. gov to learn about coverage. Most policies require a 30-day waiting period—don’t wait until a storm is in the Gulf.
Ask yourself:
• How will I communicate with family if service is down?
• What if someone in my home has special medical needs?
• Where would I go if I needed to evacuate?
• What about pets?
STAY INFORMED
Get reliable updates before, during and after emergencies:
• Township alerts: thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/subscribe
• Power outages: entergy.com, centerpointenergy.com
• Local OEMs: mctxoem.org and readyharris.org
• Radio: K-STAR 99.7 FM, KTRH 740 AM, KUHF 88.7 FM

Let’s taco ‘bout it. When it comes to severe weather, it helps to think in terms of tacos.
A WATCH means you have all the ingredients laid out—tortillas, meat, toppings, maybe even some guac.
You’re not eating yet, but the conditions are right for tacos to be made.
This is your time to prepare: review your emergency plan, check your flashlights, charge your phone, and make sure you’ve got what you need in case the storm develops.
A WARNING? That’s when the taco is made and in your hand.
The storm is happening or about to happen—now is the time to act.
Seek shelter, follow instructions from emergency officials, and avoid flooded roadways.
Here in The Woodlands, the most common severe weather threats are high winds, power outages and flooding. Knowing the difference between a Watch and a Warning helps you respond quickly and safely when it matters most.
If you’ve ever come home to find flags in your grass or construction crews digging near your property line, you’re not alone—and you’re not imagining things.
Utility providers, such as phone, cable, internet companies and others, have the legal right to access public rightsof-way and utility easements, many of which run through what appears to be your front or side yard.
While it may feel like your personal space, a portion of this area is actually part of the road right-of-way maintained by the county. Utilities providers are only required to notify the county—not The Woodlands Township—before they begin work.
So while you may think to contact The Township with questions, we often don’t have the details—because we are not notified and do not have the authority to regulate or stop the work being done.
If a utility provider works within a designated easement on your property (outside of the road right-of-way), they are typically responsible for repairs within that area. However, if damage occurs in the road rightof-way—such as to landscaping or irrigation—those repairs may not be covered by the utility provider and are not the responsibility of The Woodlands Township.
Many contractors do return to repair damage after completing their work, and residents are encouraged to contact the utility provider directly with any concerns.
As summer approaches, so does our annual battle with mosquitoes. While The Woodlands Township helps monitor mosquitoes in our area, it is important to note that mosquito control is a county responsibility. The Township does not spray or provide any type of control but focuses on education and monitoring efforts.
The risk of mosquito-borne illnesses, such as West Nile virus, rises as temperatures climb. Protect yourself with these simple strategies:
• Cover Up – Wear long sleeves and light-colored clothing at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
• Use Repellent – Apply EPA-approved repellents containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Always follow product instructions and consult a pediatrician before applying to infants under six months.
• Eliminate Standing Water – Regularly check for mosquito breeding sites in your yard. Empty plant saucers, tip over kiddie pools, clean gutters and use Mosquito Dunks in birdbaths and rain barrels.
• Use Outdoor Defenses – A simple box fan on your patio can deter mosquitoes, as they struggle to fly in the wind. Garlic barriers can also help confuse their senses without harming pollinators.
Each week, the Township sets traps to monitor for mosquito-borne diseases and reports findings to our county partners. These efforts help lower the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses in our community. This is a courtesy and enhancement provided by the Township to support our community's health and safety.
The Township is committed to educating our residents, but we need your help. Gear up, apply repellent, and take action to keep mosquitoes at bay. Have questions? Email enviro@thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov or call 281-210-3800. Let’s make this summer memorable—without the mosquito bites! Use the QR code for more tips to battle mosquitoes in your yard.
Did you know that the average person uses more than 300 plastic bags a year? Even more surprising is that every ounce of plastic ever created is still with us—because plastic never truly biodegrades. Instead, it breaks down into smaller pieces known as microplastics, which can linger in our environment for hundreds of years. But there’s good news: plastic bags and film are recyclable—you just have to know where to take them.
While many residents are familiar with tossing recyclables into their curbside cart, plastic bags and film don’t belong there. The Township’s recycling program uses a process called singlestream recycling, where materials like cardboard, cans, and plastic containers are mixed together and later sorted at the Waste Management facility.
Unfortunately, plastic bags wreak havoc on this process. They tangle in the machinery, cause costly damage, and pose safety risks to employees. That’s why plastic bags and film are considered contamination in your cart—even if they’re clean.
So, where do they go? It’s easier than you might think. Most grocery stores, including H-E-B and Kroger, offer plastic bag recycling bins near their entrances. These programs accept more than just grocery bags—they also take bubble wrap, food storage bags, produce bags, case wrap, and other plastic films. Instead of ending up in a landfill, these materials are turned into composite lumber used for decking, benches, and even playground equipment—some of which is installed right here in our community.
This summer, Environmental Services staff will be visiting select H-E-B and Kroger locations to share tips and answer questions about plastic film recycling. Dates and details will be posted on the Township's website.
Next time you shop, don’t forget your reusable bags—and your stash of plastic film ready for recycling. Small steps make a big difference!

Biking means many things to people, and for Mike Pilkenton, Lead Town Center Ranger for The Woodlands Township, it means freedom. Biking reminds him of his childhood innocence and getting away from the pressures in life. All his worldly cares vanish with the wind in his face.
Mike is a local Woodlands resident who has been cycling for much of his life. He spent nearly 20 years managing bike shops in The Woodlands area and is the go-to man for biking tips. Living in The Village of Grogan’s Mill, Mike enjoys riding along Lake Woodlands while stopping at the many parks on the way from his home; like Southshore and Lakes Edge where he can stop for a coffee or a healthy snack then continuing to Olmstead Park near East Shore.
There are many different rides available in The Woodlands. Trail riding is a great way to escape into nature such as riding for miles in the George Mitchell Nature Preserve. You can also test your endurance with road riding. While riding, be aware of motorists, pedestrians and large pavement gaps that can catch the thin tires. Mike suggests learning basic maintenance such as changing flats, maintaining tire pressure and how to lubricate your bike.
Regardless of where you ride, always wear a helmet, gloves, and dress comfortably for the weather. Stay hydrated and bring a healthy snack to stay energized.
Mike has many tips for The Woodlands residents, experienced and inexperienced alike. He says that local bike shops are the best way for people to get more involved or to start their adventure. Many local shops have cycling meet ups for all skill levels like the Sunday Road Ride through Sun and Ski Sports or the Shop Rides through Race Ready Repair. While you’re at the shop, make sure to buy some good bike shorts. He also advises you to not give up after the initial “sit bone pain.” It will quickly pass.
Mike was recently promoted to the role of Town Center Supervisor where he oversees a staff of 23 rangers as well as landscaping contracts and maintenance for Town Center parks, such as Town Green, Waterway Square, Hughes Landing area and others.
When biking in The Woodlands, “share the road,” embrace your inner child, take in the scenery, and most importantly, feel the freedom! To learn more about biking in The Woodlands for Bike Month this May visit us online.

Uniquely, our village teacher grants require funds to be spent in the classroom, directly benefiting the students. In some cases, future students will benefit from the investments for years to follow.
If you are interested in advertising through the association while also supporting our education fund for teacher grants to our elementary schools and/or scholarships to high school students, please contact us at communicationsforccva@gmail.com. Tote bag advertising is available!

Happy Summer to all from the College Park Village Association committee members! We hope your vacations are full of fun and activities. The Woodlands villages have beautiful pools and amenities that all can enjoy to keep cool!
The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion has great concert venues for all to enjoy, along with our movie theaters featuring the number one movies out and of course, our top-of-the-line restaurants and hotels are right here in The Woodlands!
We live in a beautiful community, and you could spend your staycation in one of our hotels without traveling anywhere!
In closing, please be safe when shopping and out at night! Know where your car is and be aware of your surroundings. It only takes a moment for someone to come up behind you and ask for money or help and leave you vulnerable. Our mall has security on horses and patrols, but we all need to be aware and report anything unusual.

Yes. Wondering when and where to put your trash and recycling bins? There are specific guidelines to help keep our neighborhoods clean, safe and looking their best.
Trash, recycling and yard waste containers may be placed at the curb no earlier than the day before your scheduled pickup. Once collection is complete, all containers must be removed from the curb, driveway and front yard by the end of the pickup day.
When not in use, containers must be stored out of public view—that means behind a fence, in a garage, or another location not visible from the street or neighboring properties.
Why does this matter? All homes in The Woodlands are governed by Covenants and Residential Standards, which help preserve property values, community appearance and overall quality of life. Following these simple rules goes a long way in keeping The Woodlands beautiful for everyone.
