As 2025 comes to a close, we reflect on the progress made throughout the year and the commitment to listening and acting on the needs of our community. The Township Board has worked diligently to strengthen the quality of life in The Woodlands through enhancements in public safety, communications and community experiences.
This year the Board advanced law enforcement services and improved emergency communication tools to better prepare our community during critical times. A major milestone was the launch of the Township’s redesigned website providing a modern, accessible and user-friendly way for residents to stay informed and connected. We have also made great strides with the Respect the Path educational initiative promoting safer and more enjoyable use of our extensive pathway system.
The Board is also excited to share that Holiday on The Waterway continues to grow as a signature destination for both residents and visitors. This season’s festivities will showcase expanded features offering families the opportunity to begin a new holiday tradition right here in The Woodlands.
Fiscal responsibility remains at the forefront of the Board’s work. The Township continues to maintain one of the lowest property tax rates in Texas and we are proud to affirm that the property tax rate will remain unchanged for 2026. This prudent approach ensures that essential services are funded while preserving the financial stability our community values.
As we conclude the year we extend our gratitude to the residents whose feedback guides the work of the Township Board. Together we celebrate a year of meaningful progress and look forward to building upon this foundation in the year ahead.
Here’s to a safe, memorable holiday season and a bright year to come.
Sincerely,

THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS TYPICALLY MEETS on the third and fourth Thursday of each month at Town Hall, 2801 Technology Forest Blvd., 6 p.m., unless posted otherwise. Residents are encouraged to attend.

By LeaAnn Petersen
As the Director of Communications for The Woodlands Township, part of my job is to help our community stay informed through educational initiatives like Respect the Path, which promotes safety on our pathways. I am also a parent raising children, so when I talk about safety it is not just professional, it is personal. Recently, while helping capture photos and video for this initiative, I climbed onto an electric scooter myself.
That first moment I stepped on, my heart leapt. It was scary. The scooter could easily reach 15+ mph. I deliberately held it under 8 and even then, it felt fast. After a few passes, I began to see the appeal. It was a lot of fun. But I am an adult who understands the rules of the road, can judge distance, anticipate intersections and adjust to others around me. Children do not have that same level of awareness, judgment or experience.
That is why here at The Woodlands Township we believe electric scooters, e-bikes and other battery powered rideables should not be under the Christmas tree for kids this holiday season. Even the American Academy of Pediatrics advises that children under 16 should not operate e-devices.
In a recent U.S. report, emergency-department visits for e-scooter injuries increased 80% from 2023 to 2024, and 18% of those injuries involved head trauma. According to a clinical case series from 2023–24, 42.9% of pediatric e-scooter injuries were fractures and 39.3% were head injuries, with some requiring CT scans or surgical intervention, including epidural hematomas. In earlier years, hospitals already documented more than 13,500 pediatric incidents over just two years (2020–2021). With

nothing between the rider and the pavement at these speeds, the risks are serious.
I have seen my own kids scrape their knees and elbows on regular bikes and scooters resulting in bumps and bruises, which can easily be treated with a bandage and a kiss. But imagine the same fall at twice the speed on an e-device. That is not a scraped knee, it is an ER visit. Local medical professionals and first responders often compare these crashes to motorcycle accidents because of the speed, impact and severity of the injuries.
This holiday season, think carefully about gift choices. There are many ways to give your children joy, creativity and active play without putting them at risk on an electric device. Consider a regular bike or scooter which not only provides fun but also builds confidence, balance and independence. These traditional choices encourage healthy outdoor activity and can be enjoyed with friends and family in a safer way. Be sure to add a properly fitted helmet as part of the gift. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that helmets reduce the risk of head injury by as much as 85%. A helmet is just as important as the wheels themselves.
As both a communications professional and a parent, the fun of the ride is not worth the fall.
• Show courtesy and respect to other pathway users.
• Stay on the right side of the pathway; pass on the left.
• Avoid putting yourself and others at risk.
• Listen for audible signals; allow other pathway users to pass.
• Keep dogs on a leash and clean up after them.
• Always yield to wheelchairs.
• Motorized vehicles are prohibited (except for maintenance and mobility devices).
• Bike at a reasonable speed.

The Woodlands Township employs 73 U.S. Veterans. The following is an interview with one of them regarding what Veterans Day means to her.
About Anne Ehlert
Anne Ehlert, who works in the Township Human Resources Department, grew up in a small Texas town with dreams to travel and expand her learning. With a strong interest in math, Anne joined the United States Navy to give back to her country and explore her dreams of traveling and to discover herself and her future goals. As a Fire Controlman (Aegis), she was responsible for maintaining and operating the computer and display systems that support the Aegis missile system. She stated, “While I did not deploy, I had the unique honor of serving as a Plankowner – the first crew – of the USS Gravely (DDG 107). I witnessed the ship’s construction, participated in its commissioning, and supported its sea trials, helping prepare it to become an operational part of the Navy’s fleet. Being part of that foundational journey was a rare and meaningful experience that I’m proud to have contributed to.”
She gained many accolades during her time in the military, like being named Junior Sailor of the Quarter and receiving two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals. Her proudest accomplishment was when she was given the opportunity to be cross-trained as a Master Helmsman. This role was not normally granted to seamen in her position, however her chain of command had confidence in her to take on such a critical role.
At just 18 years old, she learned many life lessons that college alone would not have provided her with. Her experience accelerated her personal growth and maturity by exposing her to people of diverse backgrounds, cultures and life experiences. She values that privilege, and attributes it to her ability to collaborate and thrive in team settings.
When asked what Veterans Day means to her personally, Anne stated, “It’s a time to honor and recognize the sacrifices made by those who have served in the armed forces. One of the defining qualities of military service is the willingness to put others before oneself – leaving family behind, missing important life moments, and facing the possibility of great personal risk – all in the hope of making the world a safer and better place.”
Her answer, the same as many veterans, illustrates the dedication and the compassion that lies within the hearts of our countless military personnel. This can be seen within Anne as well; her kindness and commitment are vibrantly evident in her daily interactions with our community members.
Anne’s message to our community this Veterans Day is, “I hope everyone takes a moment to reflect on the individuals who have dedicated themselves – and in many cases, made profound sacrifices – to help shape and protect our nation. Veterans from all walks of life, representing a wide range of religions, ethnicities, political beliefs and national origins, have come together in service of a shared mission: safeguarding our country and preserving its freedoms.”

With Thanksgiving around the corner, it’ll soon come time to hunt for the perfect Christmas tree. From live trees with that fresh pine scent to artificial trees with pre-strung lights, there are plenty of options to make your holiday merry and bright.
As you shop for the perfect fit this year, keep your tree’s disposal in mind. While live green trees can be composted, those with artificial snow (known as flocking) are headed for the landfill after the holidays. For a sustainable swap, try keeping your tree green and adorning it with white garlands to produce a similar aesthetic. Once the holidays have passed and it’s time to take down your decorations, simply find the appropriate disposal option below for your chosen tree.

Live Christmas trees without flocking can be composted once all decorations and lights are removed. If you prefer the convenience of curbside pickup, place the tree at the curb on your regular service day. It will be picked up by the yard trimmings truck. Trees over six feet tall will require trimming into sections six feet in length or less.
Another option for unflocked trees is to bring them to the tree corral at The Recreation Center at Rob Fleming Park, 6464 Creekside Forest Drive, any time from Friday, December 26, 2025, to Sunday, January 11, 2026. These trees will be chipped and used for flooring underneath the Texas TreeVentures aerial obstacle course.
If your tree is covered in artificial snow, it must be landfilled due to being covered in plastic fibers. Go to wm.com or call Waste Management at 800-800-5804 at least two business days before your regular service day to schedule bulk pickup. Artificial trees that have reached the end of their useful life can also be scheduled for bulk pickup at the curb.
For any questions about proper tree disposal, please contact The Woodlands Township Environmental Services at 281-210-3800 or enviro@thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov.
Join The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Services in our ongoing efforts to prevent crime by taking advantage of our contactless document shredding service.
Ensure secure disposal of unwanted papers, protect your personal information and reduce clutter in your home. Shredding sensitive documents—such as bank statements, medical records and old tax forms—is not only an eco-friendly way to discard personal records, but it also helps prevent identity theft and keeps your home organized and safe from fire hazards.

We're thrilled to announce that we have awarded $16,000 in scholarship funds to graduating students from the Sterling Ridge area. Parents, please remind your children to apply next year for the numerous scholarships we offer, catering to both traditional colleges and trade schools.
Along with that, we warmly invite local business owners to join us at our upcoming fall Sterling Ridge Golf Tournament this November. This event not only promises great networking opportunities with local business leaders, but the funding goes toward our resident elementary schools and student scholarships. It's the perfect chance to showcase your company while contributing to our community’s growth.
Our annual Sterling Ridge Kids Festival, Pool Party and National Night Out events were a resounding success, celebrating the community and enjoyment of our local village. We truly appreciate everyone who participated and made these events memorable.

• Also, ensure your alarm system is registered and permitted with an Alarm Permit issued through the Sheriff’s office as well.
Stay connected and informed of upcoming events by following us on our website, sterling-ridge.org, LinkedIn, Nextdoor, Facebook and Instagram accounts. We also encourage all Sterling Ridge residents to attend our monthly meetings, held every first Thursday of each month at the RE/ MAX office in the Sterling Ridge shopping center.
