A MESSAGE TO OUR COMMUNITY

DEAR RESIDENTS OF THE WOODLANDS,

This year, The Woodlands celebrated its 50th anniversary with a series of unforgettable events that brought the community together. From the opening ceremony that set the tone for the festivities, to a Day of Giving that highlighted the generosity of our residents, the week was packed with special moments. A tree dedication symbolized our ongoing commitment to preserving the environment, while a mural unveiling captured the vibrant spirit of The Woodlands. The celebrations also included a concert that brought music and joy to the heart of our community, culminating in a grand celebration that marked this milestone year in style.

As we conclude this memorable year, there is much to celebrate beyond the 50th anniversary of The Woodlands. This year has been marked by achievements that showcase the strength, character and community spirit that make The Woodlands such a special place to live.

For the second consecutive year, The Woodlands was named the #1 Best City in the United States to buy a house by Niche.com. This honor reflects the dedication of our residents in preserving the high quality of life that makes our community a sought-after destination.

We were also recognized for maintaining a fiscally sound budget, a reflection of our commitment to responsible financial management. This recognition ensures our community remains financially stable while continuing to improve services and amenities.

Our environmental efforts were highlighted this year by Keep Texas Beautiful, honoring our commitment to preserving the natural beauty of our surroundings and protecting our environment for future generations.

Additionally, our redesigned Talk of the Township e-newsletter received two awards this year, recognizing its role as a vital communication tool that keeps residents informed and engaged with local news and updates. As we look to the future, we are committed to building on these successes and continuing to work together to ensure The Woodlands remains a place where people thrive. Thank you for your ongoing support and engagement, which make these accomplishments possible. Together, we will continue to celebrate our community’s successes while striving for an even brighter future.

Sincerely,

REFLECTING ON THE PAST SHAPING THE FUTURE

On saturday october 19, we celebrated The Woodlands' 50th anniversary. Over the past year, we reflected on the remarkable journey that began in 1974 and how this community has grown from George Mitchell’s vision. We explored the milestones, achievements and evolution of The Woodlands into the vibrant, thriving and nationally recognized community it is today. However, as we reflected, it became clear that Mitchell’s vision was never rooted in nostalgia for what could be—it was always a vision of the future.

When Mitchell first envisioned The Woodlands, he saw more than just a development. He imagined a place where people could live, work, pray and play in harmony with nature. His focus was on creating a sustainable, well-planned community that would preserve the natural beauty of East Texas while fostering a sense of belonging and responsibility. As we celebrated this past year, Mitchell’s foresight has continued to shape the landscape, culture and quality of life we enjoy today.

But what about the next 50 years? Just as Mitchell's vision looked ahead, so must we. The future of The Woodlands is now in our hands, and the responsibility of maintaining and enhancing the community he built doesn’t rest solely on institutions or leadership—it’s on every resident. We all play a role in ensuring The Woodlands remains a beacon of innovation, sustainability and community for generations to come.

Looking forward, we face new challenges, opportunities and questions about how The Woodlands will evolve. How do we balance growth with environmental stewardship? How do we ensure our infrastructure supports a modern, connected community while maintaining the character that makes The Woodlands special? These are questions we must answer together, with the same forward-thinking mindset that Mitchell had when he first broke ground.

Our future depends on each of us. Residents, local businesses and community organizations all have a stake in shaping what The Woodlands will become in the next 50 years. Our involvement— whether through local governance, environmental initiatives or fostering a strong community spirit—will determine the legacy we leave for those who follow.

As we move forward, we carry the lessons of the past 50 years. We remember the early days when the trees were planted, the streets laid and the first families moved in. And we celebrate the community that has blossomed from those humble beginnings. But we also embrace the promise of the future, knowing the true strength of The Woodlands lies not just in its design, but in the people who call it home.

As we celebrate this historical milestone, let’s honor Mitchell’s enduring vision by continuing to look ahead, dream big and take action in ways that ensure The Woodlands thrives for the next 50 years and beyond.

CELEBRATING NATURE & COMMUNITY

This fall, The Woodlands unveiled a vibrant new mural, marking its 50th anniversary and showcasing the community's rich connection to nature. Located along The Woodlands Waterway® near The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, the mural spans 1,000 square feet and stands 12 feet high. Crafted by local artists Marlo Saucedo and Amy Malkan, the mural came to life with the help of 150 enthusiastic painters, including 70 students from The Woodlands High School and The Woodlands College Park High School. The Woodlands Arts Council selected the featured artists through an open call, honoring their commitment to artistic integrity and community involvement.

The inspiration for the mural stemmed from a desire to give back to a community that has provided so much. As Marlo Saucedo shared, “The Woodlands has done so much for me and my family. This mural is a way to give back.” With an emphasis on local flora and fauna, the mural integrates the area’s rich history and biodiversity, including images of hummingbirds, monarch butterflies, and the recognizable sunset hibiscus.

The creation process involved several stages: design took 5-6 hours, with a total of 32 hours dedicated to painting over four days. Using a projector for accuracy, Amy and her assistant Michael Temple guided the students in bringing their vision to life, allowing community members to leave their mark.

Both artists hope the mural will resonate with viewers, capturing the beauty of The Woodlands and reminding everyone to appreciate life's small, beautiful moments. Visitors are encouraged to take photos and share their experiences on social media, helping to celebrate the uniqueness of this beloved community.

Q&A WITH THE ARTISTS

Q: WHAT DO YOU HOPE PEOPLE TAKE AWAY FROM THE MURAL?

Marlo: I hope it brightens their day with its vibrant colors. It’s a unique representation of our community.

Amy: For me, it’s about capturing the beauty of life— reminding people to slow down and appreciate the little things.

Q: ANY OTHER THOUGHTS FOR VISITORS?

Amy: We’d love to see how people interact with the mural. Please tag us on Instagram!

Marlo: We're so excited for you to discover the detail and read the story in this mural!

Check out the mural artists on Instagram! @Marlosaucedoart and @Amymalkan.

The mural is located on The Woodlands Waterway® on the south side of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and adjacent to the Millennium sculpture.

A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE HOW A BLOOD DONOR'S GIFT SAVED OUR

We were at my husband's company Christmas party when I missed a call from my mom. After three more missed calls, I knew something wasn’t right.

When I called her back, I couldn’t hear her very well, but what I did hear made no sense: “...Timothy is sick…,” “... very worried…,” “...emergency room…” Putting the pieces together, I guessed he had spiked a fever and that my mom was overreacting, but I knew the night was over. My husband and I said our goodbyes around 11 p.m. and rushed to Memorial Hermann, only to find that my dad had brought him in. We immediately knew something was wrong. My dad, a former police officer with nerves of steel, is the last person to get alarmed or overreact—but thank God he did.

Everything after that is a blur of fragmented memories.

SON

But what stands out the most about that night, are the bags and bags of blood.

In the stillness of the hospital room, with nothing else to focus on, I watched each drop of blood flow into my son’s veins, restoring him bit by bit. Those bags were more than just medicine; they were hope, slowly giving him back the life he had been slipping away from. He received six units of blood that night.

Our son, Timothy, was later diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Two months exactly after his second birthday. Over the following months, he received countless blood transfusions to help his body recover and endure the harsh treatments. But on that one fateful night almost 12 years ago, when our world was turned upside down and we nearly lost him, it was a stranger’s blood donation—a simple, selfless act—that saved our precious boy, pulling him back from the brink of death. And if you are that stranger who donated blood, I can never thank you enough.

I remember our toddler—his small body limp and pale, his skin as yellow as a canary, restless even in his exhaustion. The hospital staff moved with quiet urgency, their faces tight with concern. The ride in the ambulance to Texas Children’s felt both endless and too fast to grasp.

The gift of a blood donation is more precious than anything wrapped under the tree this holiday season. It’s a lifeline, a chance for someone like Timothy to celebrate another birthday,

laugh with loved ones and hold onto hope when all seems lost. Every time you donate blood, you’re giving a part of yourself to someone in need—a stranger who might be facing the fight of their life, just as Timothy did.

This holiday season, The WoodlandsTownship Neighborhood Services is hosting two blood drives, offering the opportunity for our community to come together and make a lifechanging difference.

GREEN YOUR GIFT WRAP TOP TIPS FOR SUSTAINABLE GIFTING

The holiday season is filled with colorful wrapping paper, vibrant bows, and gifts of all shapes and sizes. As it’s out with the old and in with the new, it can be hard to keep those trash cans from overflowing! From knowing which giftwrap is recyclable to purchasing reusable options, here are our top tips for gifting sustainably this year.

INTRODUCE REUSABLE GIFT BAGS

Readily available and worth the initial investment, reusable gift bags maintain the festive feel of gift giving while allowing reuse for years to come. Mix and match various sizes and styles, including those with a drawstring, to elegantly package presents and maintain the “unwrapping” effect of gift bags without a pile of paper to deal with.

USE FOUND MATERIALS FOR A GIFT BOX OR WRAPPING

Repurposing items for wrapping presents is easier than you think! Try using an old record album sleeve or cereal box to craft a custom gift box, or perhaps use last week’s newspaper as wrapping paper - add an element of fun by using the cartoon section! If you’d like an extra flourish, try repurposing a paper bag to make a DIY bow. Visit the Earthwise blog for these patterns and more details on how to make everyday items shine with holiday magic.

RECYCLE WHAT YOU CAN’T REUSE

If you still have rolls of holiday wrapping paper, make sure you know what is recyclable. Plain wrapping paper, tissue paper and flattened cardboard boxes can all be placed in your curbside cart. However, when it’s not just paper and it is embellished with other materials like glitter, felty texture or metallic features, it is not recyclable and belongs in the trash. When in doubt, throw it out.

GIVE YOUR GENTLY USED ITEMS A NEW LIFE

As you upgrade your items and make space for new treasures, consider donating housewares, toys, furniture and appliances to local charitable organizations. Items should be in good, usable condition. If your items are beyond donation, explore recycling options with these guides. Need help locating a sustainable disposal option? Call Environmental Services for assistance at 281-210-3800.

WATER RENEWAL FOR THE FUTURE

As The Woodlands passes its 50th anniversary, a major new initiative, "Water Renewal The Woodlands," has been launched to modernize aging components of the community’s water and wastewater systems. The Woodlands Water Agency, in partnership with local Municipal Utility Districts (MUDs) and the San Jacinto River Authority (SJRA), is spearheading this effort to address service disruptions and system failures caused by outdated infrastructure.

“This initiative is crucial as we celebrate 50 years and aim to ensure our infrastructure can support the community for the next half-century,” said Erich Peterson, General Manager of Woodlands Water. “The vitality of the community hinges on the reliability of its infrastructure and its ability to maintain the highest level of service to residents, visitors and businesses.”

The Water Renewal 10-year project plan includes proposed immediate and long-term projects from Woodlands Water and the SJRA. The plan will involve a phased approach over the next decade, addressing infrastructure needs based on risk, age and condition, and will be able to adapt to new data and priorities. As it is updated annually, it can be adjusted to include additional projects, reprioritizing projects, modifying or even removing projects.

Community involvement is at the heart of this initiative. “Our goal is to fully engage the community and be transparent as we plan for the future of our water and wastewater systems,” adds Peterson.

To keep residents informed, a dedicated Water Renewal The Woodlands website has been created. Here, you can find the latest project updates, submit questions, share feedback, and sign up for newsletters to stay in the loop.

NEW FAMILY TRADITIONS ON THE TOWN CENTER TROLLEY

The Bennetts were

still getting used to life in The Woodlands, Texas - fresh off a cross-country move with two kids in tow and sporting a “new-to-town” sheen. Moving thousands of miles away from family and friends isn’t easy, and with the added layer of it being the holiday season, Ryan and Megan Bennett were eager to explore the area and start making memories. A trip around Town Center on the popular Trolley with their two kids, Emma and Jack, seemed the perfect way to do just that. Mrs. Bennett had heard about the Trolley from a mom at the kids’ new school. It’s a free and easy way to get around without driving and parking.

A SHOPPING SPREE, WITH A SIDE OF SUGAR

The Bennetts boarded the trolley, which had quickly become a family favorite. This vintage trolley offers ample seating, wide window views, storage for a stroller and the excitement of seeing the Waterway meander by. First stop, The Woodlands Mall - a wonderland of holiday decorations and the stores bustling with shoppers. Megan looked forward to holiday shopping while keeping the kids entertained with visits to toy shops and candy stores.

MARKET STREET MERRIMENT AND FESTIVE FLAIR

After the mall, the family moved to Market Street, drawn to the giant, sparkling tree in Central Park. Megan smiled and said, “We could drive, but where’s the fun in that?” The Bennetts peeked into store windows, sipping hot cocoa and browsing the holiday displays. With the Christmas season so close and the shops teeming with people, parking would have been a chore. Thank goodness for the Trolley, thought Mrs. Bennett.

LAKESIDE LUNCH AND TRANQUIL VIEWS

Next, they hopped back on the Trolley for a quick ride to Hughes Landing. Little Jack, face pressed against the trolley window, was mesmerized by the ducks gliding on the water. They snagged a table at a family-friendly eatery overlooking the lake and Ryan and Megan savored the tranquility.

"We could do that,” Ryan suggested as he watched people glide over the water on kayaks and pedal with a friend in the Swan boats. But Megan, always the planner, had a better idea: “Let’s catch the trolley tonight and check out the holiday lights!”

HOLIDAY LIGHTS AND A NEW TRADITION

As evening descended, the Bennetts were back on the trolley, ready to take in the holiday light extravaganza along the Waterway. As they made their way through the trolley route lit up with shimmering decorations, Emma and Jack were wide-eyed with delight, their faces bright with excitement as they pointed out the festive lights and glowing snowflakes.

Ryan smiled at Megan. “This is what I was hoping for,” he said. “We may not be with family, but we’re making new traditions.”

As the trolley carried them through The Woodlands Town Center, Megan felt a sense of belonging. They might be new here, but with each stop, they were becoming more connected to the community. The Town Center Trolley, with its simple, free convenience, was the perfect way for their family to explore, make memories, and find their place in this new town. It was the start of a new, cherished tradition, one that felt like home.

COCHRAN’S CROSSING

Submitted by Cynthia Kessinger

The Cochran’s Crossing Village Association board will once again be searching in December for the bestdecorated home and bestdecorated street. We will be out and about driving by every home in the village within the first couple of weeks of the month, so have your lights on every night! We hope to find home after home brightly decorated for the holidays! Please view the announcement of the winning houses on the Association’s Facebook page.

Cochran’s Crossing is very grateful for the reusable shopping bag business sponsorships, which enable us to provide free heavy-duty bags to residents while using the sponsorship proceeds to fund teacher grants and scholarships. Booth vendors at the festival are always appreciated, with booth sales proceeds benefitting the education fund.

Thank you again for all the community support received!

Our village has been busy working on a new scholarship application and format. Look for the application around the first of the new year. Teacher grant applications will soon be available, with recipients announced in January. Teacher grants are fund requests from teachers for supplies and projects for their classrooms, with direct benefit to the student’s learning experience.

Residents are always welcome to our monthly meetings. The November board meeting is on November 19, 2024, at 7 p.m. at The Woodlands Township building. We hope to see you there! The board does not meet in December.

The Gunnels’ are College Park High School alumni and third-generation Grogan’s Mill residents. And for August: Well done to Michelle Walker of Deerfoot Circle!

Grogan’s Mill Village Association, in partnership with The Woodlands Township, is excited for the return of the Holiday Lighting Contest. Prizes for best home and best neighborhood are up for grabs, so start planning your light displays now! To nominate a home or neighborhood, email bellacruzsoldit@gmail.com.

When you shop at The Woodlands Farmer’s Market, you are getting fresh produce and other goods cultivated by people in your community. Proceeds from the market fund scholarships for students in the area and feed the hungry at nearby food banks. Special thanks to St. Arnold’s Brewery for the samples they gave out at the Labor Day farmer’s market! The Woodlands Township recently issued a proclamation for National Farmers Market Week, recognizing The Woodlands Farmers Market for their contribution to the community.

Beginning in January 2025, Grogan’s Mill residents will be able to apply on our website for scholarships. The winning students will be announced in April 2025. For more information, please go to grogansmill.org.

INDIAN SPRINGS

And in a few weeks, once again, it will be the most wonderful time of year – time for the Holiday Lighting & Decorating Contest, and Alden Bridge has some of The Woodlands’ most beautifully decorated homes. If you see a neighbor or a home in Alden Bridge that looks like a winner,

The Association’s annual fall festival was on October 20, 2024, at Shadowbend Park. A special thank you to Howard Hughes, Tough Law Firm, and Kroger for their food sponsorships providing hot dogs, chili, chips, cookies, water and candy free to residents. Thank you, thank you!

GROGAN’S MILL

Submitted by Jennifer Robinson Congratulations to our most recent Yard of the Month Winners: Austen and Mercedes Gunnels for their July yard.

The 19th annual Taste of the Village was a huge success! Residents enjoyed a variety of local vendors showcasing everything from artwork to adorable adoptable dogs, freshly prepared food and more. Boni’s En Avant and En Stage, Sarah Kelly Music School, RB Bollywood Dance, and School of Rock all gave outstanding performances–the talent in our community is incredible! Over $3,000 was raised for the Indian Springs

Village Association Service Scholarship fund through booth sales and raffle, all of which will go back to residents of our Indian Springs community. Thank you to our generous sponsors, H-E-B and Regency Centers, and all of the fantastic vendors, performers and volunteers who made this year’s Taste of the Village possible!

Dust off your reindeer, get your decorations out of the attic, and fire up the auxiliary power to energize your million-bulb Christmas light strings because it is time to decorate your house with enough holiday cheer to enrage the Grinch! We will award the Best House and the Best Neighborhood based on an individual family’s effort and a coordinated effort by a neighborhood. In 2023, the Indian Springs Christmas Lights competition hit all new levels when more homes and areas stepped up to the challenge and displayed an incredible amount of elf culture. Last year, the Best Home holiday decorations went to “Woody Wonderland” on Forge Hill while the Best Neighborhood holiday decorations went to Chandler Creek.

Judging occurs during the second week of December, so start your over-the-top holiday projects now! We look forward to witnessing the immense creativity that Indian Springs residents possess–get out your blueprints, jigsaws, glitter paint and flood lights, and get moving on those Norman Rockwell-inspired streetscapes.

A

GOOD NEIGHBOR

by keeping your street clear for emergency vehicles

As the holidays approach, the Township encourages you to remind your holiday guests to park in your driveway as much as possible, rather than on the street. When too many cars are parked on the street, emergency and maintenance vehicles cannot get through.

If you cannot avoid parking on the street be mindful, and park carefully to allow enough room for emergency vehicles to get through should you or one of your neighbors need their services.

The Township always encourages you to be a good neighbor. Next year, look for a new feature, Let’s Ask CAD. The new feature will include tips and reminders from the Township’s Covenant Administration Department (CAD).
