THE WANAKA CONCERT SOCIETY PRESENTS THE ARGYLE TRIO

The Argyle Trio is the most recent group formed by violinist Wilma Smith, former Concertmaster of the NZSO and the Melbourne Symphony, and introduces NZ cellist Mathias Balzat, who is currently studying in Düsseldorf, and award-winning Australian pianist Laurence Matheson.

Their programme celebrates three established masterpieces:

Ludwig van Beethoven - Piano Trio in C minor Op. 1, No. 3.

Bedřich Smetana - Piano Trio in G minor, Op. 15.

Antonin Dvořák - Piano Trio No. 4 in E minor, Op 90 (Dumky).

“Beethoven’s C minor Trio is such a perfect gem, it’s hard to believe it’s his Opus 1 and it’s the ideal springboard into the totally different world of heart-on-sleeve Slavic romanticism.

Dvorak’s famous 'Dumky' trio features a

passionately lamenting cello – dumky being the plural of dumka, an epic ballad or song of lament. Less familiar, but a powerful work of unbridled passion, Smetana’s early trio is dedicated to his eldest daughter who had just died aged four from scarlet fever.

Smetana was a generation older than Dvorak and his rhapsodic trio of clearly elegiac character is a milestone of romanticism, in a way forecasting the music that would soon come from Brahms, Dvorak and others.” says Wilma Smith.

This is the last of the Wanaka Concert Society’s 2023 concert series. The 2024 concert series will be available soon.

The New Zealand Male Choir is performing at Lake Wānaka Centre with Mount Aspiring College Choir on Thursday, 14 September at 7.30pm.

The New Zealand Male Choir is an auditioned choir with over 40 members from Southland to North Auckland of which 34 will be on tour. Conducted by Hawkes Bay’s Joe Christensen,

the Choir willsing a range of music including classical, folk, waiata, gospel, operatic, popular, jazz, and contemporary.

The Choir has entertained audiences both nationally and internationally for the past 24 years including several tours throughout Europe, Australia, and Canada. The Choir practises with North Island and South Island

Winter is officially over, and it was a relatively quiet winter for us, which is great. We had noticeably fewer motor vehicle incidents on our roads, despite some cold and icy mornings, an indication of safer drivers and safer vehicles, so thank you everyone!

What we are seeing a lot of these days are

false alarm activations, from residential and commercial buildings. If you’re renting out your property to guests, please include instructions regarding how your alarms work, what might set them off and where they are located. It will save us time when we arrive and hopefully reduce the number of callouts we get if people are aware that they should turn on an extractor fan when cooking breakfast. Enjoy the last of the snow, we will!
