Wastebusters is kicking off this Plastic Free July with a feel-good community event at the Lake Wānaka Centre on Tuesday, 1 July, from 6.008.00pm, and everyone is invited.

The evening will feature local legends from SUCfree and WAI Wānaka alongside Wastebusters’ Nicola Cross, who will share practical tips and insights to help people reduce single-use plastics in ways that work for them.

“Over 100 million people take part in Plastic Free July around the world - and this is your chance to join the Wānaka contingent,” says Nicola. “It’s about

local action, global impact. Come along, get inspired and find the swaps that work for you.”

Throughout the month, Wastebusters’ crew will provide regular check-ins, support and motivation - with a celebration event to wrap up the challenge at the end of July. Wanaka Futsal Kicks O for Another Competitive Year

Once upon a time, indoor football ruled the MAC gym. For years players bumped against the wall bars and slid around in the dust. In 2010 5-a-side became futsal. Wanaka Futsal was born.

In 2016, with the opening of the Wanaka Recreation Centre, Sunday evenings in winter found a new home for the game. Each season, between 10 and 16 teams - each with at least ve players (often much more)battle it out every Sunday evening. Last year, long-time title contenders The Rockets won nine of their eleven games, edging out the equally experienced Wanaka Pensioners Club on goal di erence to take the title! With limited spots available for new teams, now’s the time to get involved. Come along to the Recreation Centre from 4.30pm on Sunday evenings.

This Sunday features an open session of friendly games - perfect for players without a team to meet others, form a new crew, or slot into an existing one.

The League of Champions kicks o the following week, and after three months of erce competition, one team will emerge victorious. To stay in the loop, follow @wanakafutsal on social media, or just come down and say hi to Andy or Rich who will be there on the touchline.

Tool Library Opening Soon at Wānaka Community Workshop

A new Tool Library is opening soon at the Wānaka Community Workshop.

The Tool Library is a welcome addition to the Community Workshop and will mean tools can be borrowed for use at home. As well as this, members will continue to have access to the full workshop for work on site.

Built and tted out by the Mens Shed volunteers at WCW, the Tool Library helps solve a common problem - what to do when you don’t have the right tool for the task. Whether you’re xing furniture, hanging shelves, building a planter box, or tidying up the garden, you’ll soon be able to borrow what you need without having to buy it. Ideal for anyone without the space or budget for a full toolkit. It supports DIY, reduces waste, and encourages community sharing.

The collection includes essentials like drills, saws, hammers, levels, and tape measures, as well as larger items such as a ladder and wheelbarrow. Many tools are recycled and have been generously donated by local supporters. Tools can be borrowed by members of the Wānaka Community Workshop or by joining the Tool Library for just $30 per year.

Tool collection and drop-o will initially be available for one hour on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. The system is still evolving, so these arrangements may change.
