Above the inversion layer Wanaka Snowsports Club’s recreational and competitive members have been revelling in the sunshine and early season snow.

During summer, NZ snow sports enthusiasts delighted in our high-performance members X Games medals, World Champs medals, Freeride top spots, a Freeski Crystal Globe and FIS Alpine medals.

Watching the older athletes celebrating these achievements motivated twenty-three Wanaka Snowsports youth, including 2 snowboarders, 6 alpine ski racers, 7 freeskiers and 8 freeride skiers, to apply for grassroots awards. $500 will be deducted from each of their 2025 snowsports programmes at Cardrona-Treble Cone, taking the amount the club has distributed to our school Yr 2-Yr 8 grassroots athletes to $165,000 since 2013. Some have NZ representative aspirations and others hope to acquire sufficient skills to enjoy our beautiful local mountain environment.

Members volunteer for Alpine race events and fundraisers to help support our young members through a grant system. The club’s membership ranges from age two through to mid-eighties, all enjoying numerous local benefits and events including discounts at CardronaTreble Cone. Club Adult Ski Improvement lessons offered at Treble Cone help to keep members more competent on snow as they age.

Peak Perspectives is an opportunity to meet elite athletes, held every Thursday 6.00pm at Aprés. Athletes that have shared their stories and footage, held quizzes and distributed spot prizes include Ben Richards - World Freeride Tour medallist, Ben Barclay - Freeski World Cup medallist and SSNZ Coach Hamish McDougall. Member family gatherings, film nights and celebrations are held regularly.

There’s still time to join the Wasties Plastic Free challenge!

Plastic Free July is a global movement of more than 100 million people taking action on plastic waste, and over 40 locals have already joined the challenge with Wastebusters.

There’s still time to get involved. Sign up at wastebusters.co.nz/plastic-free-july to receive a starter newsletter and helpful tips to support your journey. They’ll wrap up the month with a fun, after-hours celebration at Wastebusters on Thursday 31 July, from 6.00pm to 8.00pm.

The evening will feature guest sustainability advocate Nicola King, who’ll share her Plastic Free July experience. There’ll be delicious low-waste kai, a round of Plastic Free Bingo, and a feel-good look at what the community has achieved together. Plus, enjoy 25% off everything in store for one night only.

The challenge began with a launch event at the start of the month, where participants made pledges and got inspired to try plastic-free swaps that work for them.

“There’s something really fun about knowing you’re part of a global movement,” says Ruth Blunt from Wastebusters. “Plastic Free July is all about giving it a go, finding what works for you, and being part of something bigger.”

Conservation tales from the sub-Antarctic Auckland Islands

Andrew Penniket from Forest and Bird (Central Otago Lakes Branch) are two passionate, local conservationists who experienced extended visits to do conservation work on Enderby Island 43 years apart.

Enderby Island is part of New Zealand's uninhabited Auckland Islands archipelago, 460km south of mainland New Zealand. It is situated just off the northern tip of Auckland Island, the largest island in the archipelago.

In this Southern Ocean location the presence of predators and the struggle for native flora and fauna to survive continues, but plenty of progress has happened.

In this public talk learn about the historical and current efforts to conserve the unique plants and ocean life that exist on the islands.

Sunday Boogie is a monthly community event held on the first Sunday of each month, brought to life by Nina from ProDanceNZ and Keity from Soul Yoga.

Think good tunes, fun atmosphere, and dancing in pairs - just like in the golden era of social dance. It's a relaxed, welcoming space where people of all ages can come together, move to the music, and connect with others.

We especially encourage mature adults to join in, but everyone is welcome - no experience needed! Some months may include a refresh of classic partner dances from that era, keeping the spirit alive while learning something new together.

Open Letter to Our Community Together, We Kept Our Cold Kids Warm

In April, we launched our Cold Kids campaign with an urgent call to action: to help keep local children and families warm through what we knew - and what has certainly turned out to be - a cold winter. The campaign was launched to raise funds for heating support, including firewood, power costs, and other essentials to help local families keep their homes warm and their children healthy - especially as rising energy prices and the high cost of living continue to put extra pressure on households in our community.

We shared stories of what hardship can look like in the Upper Clutha - the unexpected illness, the reduced hours at work, the quiet financial pressure that can push even stable households into tough choices: heating or food, shoes or power, warmth or rent.

Today, I write with something powerful to share: you answered that call. And not only that - you exceeded it.

Together, this community raised over $66,000, surpassing our initial target and ensuring that no child, no whānau, would have to face the cold alone this winter. On top of that, we received donations of firewood, winter clothing, pyjamas, kindling, and knitted goods - everything a family needs to stay warm. Whether it was a neighbour giving what they could, a local group rallying their members, or a business lending its support - every act mattered. Many gave despite facing their own pressures, showing once again that this is a community that shows up for each other.

This is what true community looks like. It’s not just about meeting a fundraising target. It’s about the intent behind every dollar, every scarf, every shared post. You reminded us that Wānaka and Hāwea don’t just care - they act.

To everyone who supported Cold Kids - please know this: you made a real difference! You brought warmth, security, and hope to families who needed it most.

And to those who are still in need: we are here. The campaign may be officially over, but the support remains. If you or someone you know is facing a tough winter, please reach out - help is available, and thanks to this community, we’re ready.
