It’s been a whirlwind eight months for Wānaka’s newest theatre society.

Officially formed in December 2024, Onstage Wānaka has wasted no time making its mark. Driven by a dedicated committee of local theatre lovers, the group launched its ambitious vision in March this year, drawing a crowd of nearly 100 enthusiastic community members to the Armstrong Room to hear about its plans to revitalise live theatre in the Upper Clutha.

Now, their debut production is just weeks away. Blood Brothers, the award-winning musical by Willy Russell, opens 8 August at the Lake Wānaka Centre. Set in Liverpool, the gripping story follows twin boys separated at birth – one raised in privilege, the other in poverty –and explores themes of class, fate and family. Known for

its powerful storytelling and unforgettable score, Blood Brothers is one of the longest-running musicals in West End history.

Local support has been overwhelming, with ticket sales going strong and anticipation building across the region.

“We’ve been blown away by the enthusiasm,” says committee member Andrea Beryl. “The cast, crew and community have all come together to make this something really special.” Blood Brothers marks just the beginning for Onstage Wānaka, with planning already underway for more shows in 2026 and beyond. One thing’s clear – community theatre in Wānaka is alive and thriving.

Pianist Abhinath Berry is delighted to be home for a brief visit from his Masters in Solo Performance programme at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and we are fortunate he has included Wanaka in his itinerary again.

His colourful programme of brilliant piano music features the Virtuoso Etudes on Gershwin by Earl Wild, Ravel Miroirs, works of Franz Liszt along with the dramatic Etude-Fantasy of US composer John Corigliano.

Why the arts might save us all

Does it feel to you that the world is in a state of permanent uncertainty and instability?

Simultaneous multiple crises such as pandemic, war, climate change, cost of living have been referred to as a ‘permacrisis’. For millennia communities have learned to live alongside disaster through their arts-making. Building on this basis, Peter O’Connor will explain how the arts might be the most useful tool we have to survive the permacrisis.

Professor Peter O’Connor is Director of the Centre for Arts and Social Transformation at Waipapa Taumata Rau (Auckland University). He has been making and researching the arts

in disaster zones including China, Mexico, Christchurch and most recently on Maui. Acknowledged as a world leader in the possibilities of the arts for social transformation, he focuses on creating and investigating arts projects in a wide range of contexts. For example, he has made theatre in prisons, psychiatric hospitals, earthquake zones and with the homeless. In 2023 he was elected Fellow of RSNZ.
