Wanaka Library is holding Social English sessions every Monday starting 14 July between 10.00am11.00am.

Experienced tutors lead these free weekly sessions in a relaxed, supportive setting. The sessions are a direct action from the Queenstown Lakes District Welcoming Plan 2024-2027, which identified a need for more English language learning opportunities in the community.

Logistics Manager at Mitre 10, Riki; originally from Brazil, arrived in New Zealand in 2018 with very limited English. He worked as a delivery driver before being promoted in 2022. A part of that journey, he says, came from the supportive environment of the library’s English classes.

“When you’re first learning, it can be embarrassing to put yourself out there” Riki says. “The first step is just that people need to feel comfortable and safe to make mistakes”.

Riki regularly attended the Social English sessions, where relaxed, friendly conversations helped him build his skills and confidence. The classes gave him space to make mistakes, ask questions, build connections, and learn without pressure.

His story is a great example of how much community support matters when learning a new language. Riki’s journey is a reminder of how important it is to create safe places for language learners.

Every year we go to fires caused by hot ashes that have not been disposed of correctly. We have been to two such fires already this winter.

Hot ashes can stay hot for up to five days.

Don’t put them into your wheelie bin, plastic bucket or garden before they have fully cooled.

The best method to fully cool them is to put the ashes into a metal bucket and pour water over them. Leave them for a period of time and dispose of them only when they are fully soaked through.
