The Wanaka Concert Society is delighted that the Aroha String Quartet is performing at the Lake Wanaka Centre on Tuesday, 8 October.

Acclaimed as demonstrating "accomplished brilliance, soulfulness and sublime intensity in perfect balance and tonal unity" (The Dominion Post), the Aroha String Quartet is firmly established as one of New Zealand's finest chamber music ensembles.

The Aroha Quartet performs regularly around NZ in centres, as well as performing internationally. In this concert they present a programme brimful of life, colour and contrasts. It begins

with the lovely simplicity of Mozart's String Quartet in B-flat K589, one of three works that he wrote with the cello-playing King of Prussia, Friedrich Wilhelm II, in mind.

They round off the concert with Schubert's masterpiece, his Death and the Maiden String Quartet in D min D810. One of the most famous pieces of chamber music ever written, this powerful work is chock-full of melodic invention.

Building Community Connections for Mental Health

The Lake Hāwea Community Centre Committee will be cooking a Community Dinner on Saturday 12 October.

The dinner is for Lake Hawea residents to socialise, hear some lovely Country Music, sung by Claire Currie, and learn about some of the new developments in Lake Hawea. There is a lot going on in the growing township.

From 6.00pm there will be a three-course dinner for $30 (and $5 for children), with gluten free and vegan options.

‘Adopt a Drain’ with WAI Wānaka’s New Progamme

WAI Wānaka is calling on the community to join their growing ‘Adopt a Drain’ initiative, with a goal of reaching 10 new sign-ups in October. By encouraging behaviour change and neighbourhood action, this free programme aims to prevent stormwater pollution from reaching local lakes and wetlands.

The process is simple: participants sign-up to ‘adopt’ the storm drains near their home or workplace. The WAI Wānaka team then visits for a personalised 30 minute session. Together, you’ll learn how to care for the catchment from the comfort of your neighbourhood, becoming part of a supportive network of Adopt a Drain volunteers. “Our community is key when it comes to protecting the health of local waterways,” says Jaylene of WAI Wānaka. “Participating in our Adopt a Drain programme is simple, rewarding and free. It’s been great to see so much enthusiam for this initiative from local families, individuals and schools.”

Brain Injury Support in Wanaka

Brain Injury Otago (BIA Otago) has a new Liaison O cer providing support for people living with a brain injury in the Wanaka area. Sue Whyte has been working for Brain Injury Otago for approximately seven years and has prior experience as a Social Worker. Sue has set up a regular time to be in Wanaka to meet with potential and current clients on the second Thursday of each month.
