Here we are again! The 2015 Outspoken Festival is set to be even more outspoken than our first edition. Between Feb 13th and March 8th, we’re showcasing some of the nation’s best comedians, poets and storytellers right here in Wanaka and Hawea.

The kids are back to school and the roads are especially busy before 9am and after 3pm. Police will be out and about in the school areas to make sure our kids are safe and drivers are keeping to speed limits and passengers are wearing seatbelts.

Last weekend Police processed two intoxicated drivers for driving over the limit. One was driving on Anderson Rd and the other in Heuchan Lane. It makes me uneasy to think these people are driving around our local streets at night. By far the majority of locals I have talked to are very aware of the new limits and have PRGLÂżHG WKHLU GULQNLQJ KDELWV RU KDYH IRXQG DOWHUQDWLYHV WR GULYLQJ - such as taxis and courtesy vans. Unfortunately, however, there are some people out there in our community who still don't get the message that driving while intoxicated is not acceptable, not now, not ever.

Police also dealt with a domestic assault late on Saturday which resulted in the arrest of a male. He will be appearing in the Queenstown District Court to explain his actions.

Police attended a single car crash on SH6 near Queensbury just before 6.00pm on Sunday. Tragically a local female passenger died at the scene as a result of her injuries. The driver was later airlifted to Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries. Police are still investigating the circumstances of the crash and our thoughts are with family and friends at this time.

We have seen several deaths on our local roads over the past year and some of these unfortunately could have been avoided.

Police will continue to give the message to slow down, wear seatbelts and watch your following distances in an effort to save lives. Keep it simple; rest if you are tired, pay attention, don't get distracted and don't drink and drive. This is simple advice that hopefully may save someone's life one day.
