PRECIOUS WATERWAYS

Submitted by Danielle McNaughton

With sizable lakes, rivers, rainfall and snowmelt, freshwater may seem abundant here, but we’re seeing the quality of water is under increasing pressure. Everything that happens on the land – from the farm to the town, on the roadside or your backyard, eventually finds its way, into our waterways. That’s why it’s important to take a ‘whole of catchment’ approach. Local community and not-for-profit organisation, WAI Wānaka, has a simple but ambitious purpose: to protect and restore the health of freshwater for generations to come. It’s a big job, but the good news is they’re not doing it alone.

FOR SALE

WAI work across the Upper Clutha catchment – from alpine lakes and rivers, to wetlands, farmland, towns and stormwater drains. Their mahi connects many

parts of our community – from individuals, catchment groups, landowners, councils, businesses, schools, community groups, and visitors.

47 Minaret Ridge, Wanaka 5

They believe everyone has a role to play in protecting our freshwater and are here to bring people together to do just that.
