With sizable lakes, rivers, rainfall and snowmelt, freshwater may seem abundant here, but we’re seeing the quality of water is under increasing pressure. Everything that happens on the land – from the farm to the town, on the roadside or your backyard, eventually finds its way, into our waterways. That’s why it’s important to take a ‘whole of catchment’ approach. Local community and not-for-profit organisation, WAI Wānaka, has a simple but ambitious purpose: to protect and restore the health of freshwater for generations to come. It’s a big job, but the good news is they’re not doing it alone.

If you have a couple of hours spare a week or fortnightly and would like to be a positive role model in a young person’s life, then volunteering as an adult buddy could be right for you! About the Buddy Programme The Buddy Programme contributes to the emotional and social well-being of children by matching them with carefully selected and trained adult volunteers in a well-supported mentoring relationship. Available to children between 5 and 12 years of age, whose life circumstances indicate the need for additional adult support. The programme aims to increase children’s self-esteem, develop social skills, and help children make positive choices, in a fun and safe environment.
