Team Synopsis: storm

The bad news: COVID limited DeMatha Catholic to 11 games in 2020-21. The good news? None of those games ended in a loss. Former longtime head coach Mike Jones - now an assistant at Virginia Tech- has molded DeMatha Catholic into one of the most respected private schools in the country, and that prestige should be continued nicely by new head coach Pete Strickland. The Stags lost some key pieces from last year’s squad, but they’ve reloaded nicely, putting together one of the strongest starting rotations on the east coast.

THE SLEEPER:

6-foot-9 senior forward Jerrell Roberson had a solid spring and summer for Team Takeover, and the James Madison commit will be be looking to parlay that into a strong senior campaign. Roberson has a stretch-four skillset, but will be relied upon to man the middle, rebound, and block shots. Roberson will be joined by fellow Team Takeover product Jason Moore - a 6-foot-5, 260-pound junior forward who also operates as a 4-star defensive tackle on the football field.

THE STAR:

This squad features two high-major commits who will share ‘star’ duties; Rodney Rice (Virginia Tech) and Tyrell Ward (Xavier). Operating as the two highest-ranked prospects on the roster, Ward (247 Comp. 45) and Rice (247 Comp. 52) each feature a talent set that should complement the other. Rice, who is heading to play for former head coach Jones at Virginia Tech, had stellar showings at both EYBL and Peach Jam in July with Team Durant. The 6-foot-4 scoring guard averaged 15.3 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.7 assists, helping lead Team Durant to the Peach Jam semifinals. Rice is a gifted scorer - a well-refined talentthat has many pundits projecting him to be a future professional. Ward was on the short list for breakout player of the summer, scorching the nets for with Boo Williams en route to averages of 16.4 points, 5.4, and 1.2 steals. The future Musketeer upped his production during the season’s final five games at Peach Jam, averaging 23.0 points and 11.2 rebounds per game. Ward issuper-athletic and can score from all t hree levels, andwhile his production hasn’t necessarily shown it, he has all of the tools to be a plus-defender. If he focuses on playinfast and attacking the basket, he’s going to havE a special season for the stags.
