THE STAR:
THE SLEEPER:
Compass Prep finished 31-2 last season, riding TyTy Washington and a loaded rotation to the GEICO Championships championship game. The Dragons fell short to eventual champion Montverde, and they’ll be returning in 2021-22 with a vengeance. Program director Pete Kaffey and head coach Ed Gipson reloaded their lineup in a big way, compiling a rotation that is as talented as any squad in the country.“Whenever you graduate eight guys and put all of them into division 1 schools, you have to reload,” Kaffey explained. “We’re looking to build off of last year’s success by bringing in high character guys that can help bring our program to the next level.”“The goal is to win GEICO.”

The Dragons will have a chance to do just that, as their 2021-22 group features seven ranked incoming transfers. Mooke Cook (247 No. 4) is the highest-ranked recruit in program history, and the 6-foot-7 junior comes to Chandler, Arizona with massive expectations. Cook is versatile enough to play the 2 or 3 positions, and when asked for a comparison, Kaffey didn’t mincewords.“Jaylen Brown,” Kaffey said, referencing the Boston Celtics all-star. “He’s very athletic. Just a winner. ”6-foot-4 senior Dylan Andrews - a 4-star recruit and a product of the Compton Magic - will trigger the backcourt for the Dragons. The coaching staff has raved about Andrews, especially on the defensive end.“We call him ‘94 feet’,”. Kaffey said. “Just a complete pest on defense.” Andrews will share the backcourt with a pair of talented juniors - 6-foot-2 Kylan Boswell and 6-foot-5 Lamar Washington. Boswell (247 No. 13) is the second 5-star recruit on the roster, and for good reason, as the talented guard used this past summer to help lift Team WhyNot to the 16U Peach Jam championship. Boswell is one of the best shooters in his class, and should see plenty of open looks in Compass Prep’s system. “Probably the best shooter in the country,” Kaffey stated. “Good decision maker. Just a winner everywhere he’;s been. We’re excited to have him.” The same can be said for Washington (247 No. 123), a physical, skilled lefty who can get to the basket at will. “(Washington) really plays with an incredible pace,” Kaffey said. “He’s a really good passer. He’s going to be really good for us.”

The frontcourt is more of the same talent-wise, as 7-foot senior Adrame Diongue is the biggest returning contributor to the squad. Diogue can legitimately guard the 1-through-5 positions, and Kaffey admitted that he might have the most NBA potential on the team. Alongside Diongue will be recent Vanderbilt-commit Colin Smith. A 6-foot-8 swingman hailing from Dallas, Texas, Smith brings versatility and shot-making to the Dragons’ frontcourt. Smith is capable of defending the 3-through-5, and has quickly turned himself into a leader on the Compass roster. Rounding out the interior is 6-foot-8 big man Max Allen. Once a top-100 recruit, Allen will be looking to showcase his energy, motor, and toughness to work his way back into the national mix. 2024 combo Chris Riddle transferred in from Chicago, and the coaching staff has called him “special”. Riddle is capable of playing the 2 or 3, and currently relies on his freakish athleticism to impact the game. 105
