RISK is a four letter word Formed in 1987, we are a fully independent, whole of market financial advisory service to discerning investors. Our clients are mainly individuals who require an honest and straightforward solution to their money problems. We have advisers who have specialist expertise in wealth building, secure money management, corporate and business financial planning and pension and retirement solutions. Regardless of your age or your current wealth, our strategic investment management solutions may work for you. There’s a lot we can do to help you achieve the kind of wealth you could only ever have dreamt of. For many investors RISK really is a four letter word, however if you allow us to manage your risk and let us invest in high-quality funds that have true growth potential, solid fundamentals and which operate in an expanding market we believe that this is a sensible way to invest. We make the difference by doing all the research, analysis and fund tracking for you; this means you potentially make better and more profitable choices. At FSC Investment Services we believe that constantly trading markets is hazardous to your wealth. We also believe that people who weave in and out of markets trying to time the peaks and troughs are more than often buying ‘after the curve’ and getting it all completely wrong. Our view is that people who think that investing is a guarantee to getting rich quick, is that it simply just doesn’t happen like that. As a regulated financial services firm we provide well-researched, recommendations and advice. We do not have a crystal ball and we are not recommending that you have a ‘punt’ on the next red hot share tip. We firmly believe in the ‘BUY AND HOLD’ philosophy, aiming for you to hold funds that have been performing well for the longer term. This should help reduce your transactional costs whilst maximising the possibility of enjoying long-term returns and

16

reducing risk. We aim to provide an exceptional opportunity to build and protect your wealth over time, and work towards creating a lasting legacy for you and your family to enjoy. Our Unique Selling Proposition is that unlike the vast majority of other Independent financial services firms we employ our own internal portfolio research and management team. The team are hand picked individuals who have proven track records of excellence in analytical research, fund management and portfolio construction. Each client we have enjoys the peace of mind knowing that their portfolio is individually custom designed, strategically aligned and managed solely for them. We do not use off the shelf portfolios nor do we use ‘stock’ risk rated portfolios derived by platform providers. This guarantees that your fund is built to satisfy your needs and to take into account your own personal tolerance of risk and acceptable tolerance of losses. We take account of the amount you want to invest, the amount of time you want to invest for and the purpose. Whether it be for income, growth or a combination of both, we look to find the most advantageous tax wrapper for your investment. As a client you will always have access to our professional team – we are only a phone call away. If you would like to book an initial free, no obligation appointment to see one of our advisors then call 01902 422333 or email robin@fscinvestments.co.uk www.thepenkridgeadvertiser.co.uk | 01785 318619

5 tips to boost your mood Boosting your mood and helping yourself feel more positive is a great thing to do, no matter how tough life can be. It may be that something as simple as singing along to a favourite piece of music or watching an episode of a classic comedy does the trick. Or, if you’re feeling lonely, spending time with others - especially children or animals - can help to bring some light back into your life. Age UK asked psychologist Susan Quilliam for her top 5 tips on how to lift your spirits. 1. Smile ‘When you smile it triggers mood-boosting hormones in the brain. So even if you don’t feel happy, put a smile on your face and you may soon start to feel more positive.’ 2. Keep busy ‘It doesn’t matter whether you tidy up the garden, wash the dishes or go for a walk - any activity that helps to break up your routine and gives you a sense of achievement will do the trick.’

For information: http://www.ageuk.org.uk/southstaffs/our-services/ exercise/positive-steps---exercise-classes/ or telephone 01785 788 472 or 467. We also have a wide range of guided group walks, led by trained volunteers, in some of the most scenic spots in the area, free of charge to attend and of varying lengths. Information on our walk programme can be downloaded from our website or call 01785 788 472/467. Visit http://www.ageuk.org.uk/southstaffs/ our-services/exercise/positive-steps-group-walks/

3. Talk to someone ‘It doesn’t matter whether you meet up face to face, talk on the phone, chat online or use Skype, connecting with other people helps to bring you out of yourself.’ 4. Spooky Stalls at Penkridge Market Penkridge Market will be looking spectacularly spooky on Saturday 31st October, as the Market Traders have been set a challenge to come in fancy dress. Customers on the day will be able to vote for their favourite costume and the stall holder with the most votes will win. Voting customers will also be entered into a prize drawer and the winner will be announced at 3pm on the day. The event will run from 9am to 3.30pm, and with free admission and free parking, it’s a fantastic free day out for all the family. Matt Williams, Manager at Penkridge Market said: “We love to get the traders involved in things like Halloween, as it gives the Market a great atmosphere and makes it more fun for the children going around the Market. If any customers would like to dress up in fancy dress too, then that would be great, as it all adds to the fun.” The winner of the ‘best dressed’ stall holder will be announced at 3pm on the day, outside The Old Deanery Farm Cafe.

30

All the regular market stall holders will be there selling lots of ‘sweet treats’ for your ‘trick or treaters’ as well as handmade chocolates, fudge and toffees, for the adults.

There will also be stalls selling everything from fabulous food and drink to gifts, toys, handbags and hats - a great place to start your Christmas shopping. The Old Deanery Farm Cafe, will be serving a wide range of hot and cold food from a bacon sandwich to delicious fish and chips, as well as a variety of refreshments stalls on site. Penkridge Market is situated in the centre of Penkridge, and is signposted off the A449. For further information please telephone 01785 714221 or log onto the website www.penkridgemarket.co.uk

Church Eaton Village Markets To access the feasibility of setting up a community marketplace in Church Eaton next year, three village markets are to be held in the Institute on 19th September, 17th October and 21st November 2015. There will be a whole range of stalls selling jewellery, toys, haberdashery, furniture, baby clothes, Indian food, bric a brac, household goods, frozen fish, skincare products and local produce. Announcing this new initiative, Institute secretary Jenny Annis said, “The idea of a community marketplace in the village will October 2015

depend on whether these three markets are well supported both from inside and outside the village. A lot of work has gone into setting them up, so we’re hoping that families and friends will come along to see what’s

on offer.” The markets will run from 10am until 1pm on each day with a coffee and tea bar selling bacon rolls. There will be ample parking too.

Stafford daredevils freefall abseil down Olympic Park sculpture Three staff from the Red Box Web Design company in Stafford have raised nearly £1,000 for charity by inching their way by rope down the UK’s highest sculpture. The iconic ArcelorMittal Orbit in London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park stands at a nerve wracking 376ft high, with 360° views across the capital city for those brave enough to take on the challenge.

conquered his fears by facing them – and this was his biggest challenge yet. “The testing part of this abseil was that there was nothing to bounce off so you had to freefall abseil down the structure. It was a bit scary but I’d do it again for sure.” Red Box Web Design is celebrating 9 years in business in Stafford and the company is enjoying a busy period of expansion.

Goodluck Mboya had never abseiled before and admitted he was terrified: “I made the mistake of looking down, “ he recalled, “and that was it – I had to close my eyes for the rest of the way – it was so high up. I’m glad I managed to do it but I never want to do it again!”

Rob says: “We try and do something for charity every year and are quite an active bunch. This was a great opportunity to challenge ourselves and to raise money for a great cause at the same time. Our clients have been extremely generous with their support.”

Dan Lewis and Managing Director Rob Mackley had abseiled before but both admitted to being slightly anxious when they saw just how high they were. “I was a bit nervous when the guys went over the edge – that was the worst part, but it was well organised and so I knew everything would be alright.”

The money raised by the Stafford trio will go to Street Child Midlands’ Legacy of Ebola Appeal and help the 20,000 children left orphaned by the Ebola crisis in West Africa. Visit the Red Box website, www.redboxweb.co.uk

Pond Plants

By Diarmuid Gavin One of the joys of having a pond or water feature in your garden is that you can grow plants that won’t grow anywhere else. I studied horticulture in the Botanic gardens in Dublin where in one of the conservatories a wonderful concrete pool had been created years ago, full of water gently heated with pipes. Every year in this pond from a single seed was grown a huge plant – Victoria amazonica. Its leaves grow massive and we were always told their substructure could hold the weight of a baby. Well, it was proved this week – did you see the pictures of a few babies floating on these giant water lilies in a Belgian greenhouse? So what will you plant in your newly installed pond? Plants, as well as their decorative purpose, are essential in the pond to create a balanced ecosystem and keep the water healthy and clear. Firstly, you need plants that provide surface cover with big leaves – this discourages algae and keeps water clear and also provides cover for fish. You are aiming to cover about half the surface of your pond with these. First choice and my favourite of all is the water lily – it has large circular leaves and of course the most exquisite flowers. The most popular variety here are Nymphaea Marliacea ‘Albida’ – pure white wide fragrant blooms - and Nymphaea ‘Carnea’ with pale pink fragrant blooms and golden stamens. As well as waterliles, there are many floaters that you simply pop on the surface. Duckweed can very quickly blanket an entire pond and be a nuisance so just use the native duckweed, Lemna trisulca. Frog-bit (Hydrocharis morus ranae) is a good choice for the small pond and has white flowers and I would also recommend Stratiotes, Water soldiers. Next you need oxygenators to keep water fresh – these are submerged and through photosynthesis under water provide bubbles of oxygen. Again there are plenty of very invasive varieties so choose carefully so you are not overrun. I would recommend Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum) , Willow moss (Fontinalis antipyretica) and Water buttercup (Ranunculus aquatilis) as all are easy to keep in check. If you are aiming to create a natural looking pond, marginal species will soften the edges of a new pool. These will have all their leaves showing, just their roots submerged so these are placed on the shallower shelf at the edge of

October 2015

the pond. The type of plants you can use here are rushes, sedges and grasses and some of the most ornamental aquatics. Among my favourites are the flowering rush, Butomus umbellatus, the white arum lily (Zantedeschia),the flag iris, Iris Pseudacorus, Iris laevigata, and Pontederia with its attractive blue spikes of flowers. If excavating for a pond is too big a project for you, you can always use a pot or a barrel – make sure it has no drainage holes and if using a terracotta pot, paint with a waterproofing yacht varnish inside. Sit plants in their pots on bricks so their leaves just float on the surface. Keep it ultra simple and plant Nymphaea tetragona, one of the smallest water lilies which has white fragrant flowers. Don’ t plant any of these – non-native invasive species – they easily escape into the wild, into our rivers and lakes and do environmental damage, squeezing out the native species: • Floating Pennywort (Hydrocotyle ranunculoides) • Parrot’s Feather (Myriophyllum aquaticum) • New Zealand Pigmyweed also known as Australian Swamp stonecrop (Crassula helmsii) • Water-primrose (Ludwigia grandiflora) • Water fern (Azolla filiculoides and Azolla caroliniana) • Curly water weed (Lagarosiphon major) • Canadian pond weed (Elodea canadensis) • Water hyacinth (Eichornia crassipes) • Water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) Tips for maintaining healthy pond: • In winter make sure ice does not completely cover pond as this will trap gases. • Remove fallen leaves in winter or place fine net over pond to prevent them falling in. • Keep a healthy balance of plants – in spring, lift out overcrowded plants. • You have to weed it like any other part of the garden – it will become submerged in green algae and weeds if left untended.

Enjoy and evening of Glitz and Glamour for Katharine House Hospice Katharine House Hospice is

proud to announce that tickets are now available for their

popular Vegas Evening – which is taking place on Friday 27th November at the County Showground in Stafford.

A special early bird discount is

available for a limited time only

until the 9th October, saving you £5 per ticket.

Elvis will be back in the building by popular demand with the

Vegas showgirls to bring the

classic sights and sounds of the strip to Stafford.

The Vegas Evening this year is

kindly sponsored by Pelo Hair &

Beauty, Stafford who are offering all guests 10% off any treatment at their salon in St. Mary’s Place in preparation for the big night. Events Fundraiser Lisa Carson said:

“Elvis impersonator Mark Clay

is back by popular demand this year after a storming

performance in previous years. He is sure to get the guests up and dancing with a great

selection of the King’s classics.

A disco is provided by DJ funky

Phil who will continue the Vegas atmosphere into the night. With

a sumptuous 3 course meal and

a fun money casino amongst the attractions we expect the Vegas Evening to sell out quickly as it

60

has done in previous years so early booking is advisable”.

Tickets for the event are £39 per person but early birds will get a £5 discount if they book before 9th October.

Rebecca Martin, Corporate

Fundraiser for Katharine House
