OF PENKRIDGE Our monthly meeting in January mainly concerned the review of information, discussion and voting on the new resolutions presented by the NFWI to help decide on the next national campaign. Every member had received their copy of “Life”, the WI magazine, in November detailing the six resolutions with pros and cons. There were also links to websites for more details. Sheila Moulton gave a synopsis of each resolution. Questions were discussed and opinions shared before each member had a personal vote. These will be posted to the Staffordshire offices. After this serious section of the meeting members enjoyed a social time with a chance to chat following the Christmas break with a welcome cup of tea.
Our next meeting will be on Monday 4th February 7.30pm in the Methodist Church Hall, with the speaker from the Owl Rescue Centre bringing along some of his feathered friends! Visitors (£4) and new members are always welcome.

OF CANNOCK Valentine’s Day may bring red hearts, but at W.I. we will be wearing green heart badges to acknowledge the “Share the Love Campaign”. This is to raise awareness of the effects of climate change, and to encourage people to take care of the environment for future generations. This national campaign prompts people into conversation, and to take a personal challenge to reduce our carbon footprint. Cannock members will be re-using and re-cycling to cut down waste, walking instead of using the car, checking our household energy use; any little things we can do individually will ultimately have a larger impact if we join as a group to help protect the natural world that we love.

The Club has recently been delighted to welcome two new members: Meena Khiroya and Lilian Hyde, which is encouraging, as our it shows our media profile through regular press releases, and Facebook is a real attribute. January’s meeting was a social event including a Bring and Buy stall where members bought along unwanted Christmas presents to exchange. A discussion was led by President Helen to help members decide on their vote for Resolution topics which will be carried forward by National Federation of Women’s Institute’s (NFWI) as their next big campaign. 6 Resolutions put forward include “Improving Plant Biosecurity in the U.K.” and “Don’t fear the Smear”. Further discussion
and the final vote will take place at the Annual Conference in June at Bournemouth. Our W.I. meetings are on the second Thursday of the month 10.30am at St Luke’s Church Centre, Cannock. Far from the home I love...
A F U N D R A I S I N G R E C I TA L G I V E N B Y AC C L A I M E D P I A N I S T, M A RG A R E T F I N G E R H U T Margaret Fingerhut is one of the UK's best-loved and most distinguished pianists. Next year she will be embarking on a very special project in support of City of Sanctuary, doing a series of solo concerts around the UK to raise money to support the work of local groups. A special charity concert will take place at The Royal School, Penn Road, Wolverhampton, WV3 0EG at 6.00pm Sunday February 10th 2019. The history of classical music is full of composers who left their homelands because of war, political upheaval or fear of persecution. Other composers who had to move country for their work were arguably no less homesick. This concert tells the stories of some of these composers through their piano music. They resonate with the current climate of troubling attitudes towards refugees and those in exile. Margaret has chosen all the pieces for their association
with the theme of exile and homesickness, and she will personally introduce the music from the keyboard in an illuminating and entertaining way. It is a wide-ranging programme, with pieces by well-loved composers such as Handel, Haydn, Chopin, Grieg, Prokofiev and Rachmaninov. Margaret has also especially commissioned a piece from Moutaz Arian, the Kurdish Syrian composer who wrote the stirring Refugee National Anthem for the Refugee Team at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Margaret Fingerhut's career has taken her to many different countries, and she has recorded over 30 CDs for the Chandos label, winning numerous accolades and worldwide critical acclaim. She is often heard on Classic FM and BBC Radio 3, and many radio stations worldwide. Margaret's grandparents came to the UK from the Ukraine, Poland and Ireland, and so this programme is a deeply personal project for her. Adults £10 / U18’s £5.00 All proceeds will go to the work of Wolverhampton City of Sanctuary Email tickets@wolvescofs.com or 0739 614 6830

Race for Life
M A K E A DAT E TO J O I N T H E R AC E F O R L I F E I N S TA F F O R D People in Stafford are being encouraged to get the year off to a great start by making a date to join Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life. This year, for the first time, Cancer Research UK is inviting everyone in the area – women, men and children - to join the Race for Life. There are events for people of all ages and abilities taking place at Weston Park on Saturday 4th May 2019. Kirsten Shore, Cancer Research UK’s Stafford Event Manager, said: “Our Race for Life events are fun, colourful, emotional and uplifting. They help people with cancer by raising money for research, including clinical trials which give patients in Stafford access to the latest treatments.
Image shows handwritten dedications, known as ‘back signs’, worn at Race for Life events.
means nearly everyone is touched by the disease, either directly or through a loved one or friend.
“Our Race for Life events have been women-only since they started, over 25 years ago. But we now feel the time is right to open them up so that everyone - women, men and children – has the chance to participate together.
“To make a significant difference in the fight against cancer we need to harness as much energy and commitment as possible – so what better way than involving everyone in the community in our events.”
She added: “You don’t have to be sporty to take part. You don’t need to train or compete against anyone else. All you need to do is go to the Race for Life website, pick an event, sign up and then have fun raising money in whatever way you like.”
Kirsten continued: “We’re urging mums, dads, nans, grandpas, brothers, sisters, friends and workmates to show their support by joining the Race for Life. It’s a perfect example of everyday people doing an extraordinary thing – uniting in a common cause to beat cancer.”
Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy and Pretty Muddy Kids events which raise millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer by funding crucial research. She continued: “The Race for Life is a powerful, inspirational movement which unites participants in Stafford with people across West Midlands and the whole of the UK.
Thanks to everyone who raises money, Cancer Research UK is able to fund research to fight 200 types of cancer. The good news is more people are surviving the disease than ever before. Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. To enter Race for Life today visit raceforlife.org or call 0300 123 0770.
“Taking part in our Race for Life events enables like-minded people to get together and remember loved ones lost to cancer or celebrate the lives of those who have survived. At the same time, they are helping to make a difference to people with cancer, right now. “One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer, at some point during their lifetime. Sadly, this

Relay Theft
Although South Staffs is a low crime area, theft of keyless entry cars is on the increase across Staffordshire. Keyless entry cars emit a radio signal which will unlock the car automatically as the key holder approaches. The car can then be started by pressing an ignition button once the driver is seated.
Penkridge Flower Club
Relay Theft is when thieves work together to steal cars which have keyless entry systems. One thief stands by the car with an electronic transmitter also known as a ‘relay’ device and his accomplice stands by the house with a second device. This picks up the signal from the key fob which is inside the car owner’s home. The vehicle responds as if that device is the key and unlocks, allowing the thieves to gain access and drive it away.
18TH FEBRUARY 2019
7:00pm
Owners of keyless entry cars should consider security of their vehicles: • Contact your dealer to see if there have been any software updates you can take advantage of and also check whether your keyless entry fob can be turned off and do this overnight

Cannock Soroptimists
R A I S I N G M O N E Y F O R W O M E N , WAT E R A N D L E A D E R S H I P Cannock Soroptimists were delighted to support people locally and abroad over the Christmas period. Members made donations amounting to £135.25 to international project “Women, Water and Leadership” in lieu of sending cards to each other; they donated Christmas gifts for the women and children who were living in the refuge run by The Pathway Project for women victims of domestic abuse and funded and prepared a 3 course Christmas meal for almost 60 people who regularly use the Soup Kitchen in Mill Street, Cannock. Cannock Soroptimists are continuing their work with local schools involved with two of their projects “Your Body, Your Rules” and the Loves Me/ Moves Me Not bookmarks.
The speaker at their Annual Dinner to be held on February 8th at Brocton Hall Golf Club is paralympic snowboard champion Anna Turney. They will be marking International Women’s Day this year by holding a special speaker meeting at The Barns, Huntington, on March 5th – International Women’s Day is on March 8th each year. The speaker will be one of their own club members, historian and author Dr Janis Lomas whose talk is entitled: “Rabble Rousers and Genteel Ladies: the Petticoat Pioneers who Won the Vote”, a subject highly suitable for this occasion. Guests are welcome to the evening which will celebrate the role women have played and continue to play in life. A two course meal will be served and tickets are just £14.00; they are available from

This luscious cake has a vibrant red coloured chocolate sponge filled with tangy soft cheese frosting and dark chocolate icing. SE RVE S 8 | R E ADY IN 1 HOUR 3 0
INGREDIENTS 300g plain flour 2 tsp bicarbonate of soda 4 tbsp coca powder 235g butter softened, plus extra for greasing 300g caster sugar 3 medium eggs, beaten 200ml buttermilk 11/2 tsp vanilla extract 2tbsp liquid red food colouring CHOCOLATE ICING 140g plain chocolate, in pieces 75g butter, diced 75ml double cream FROSTING 55g unsalted butter, softened 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 115g icing sugar, sifted 115g full-fat soft cheese 1tbsp mini chocolate chips to decorate
METHOD
Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas Mark 4. Grease the bases of 3 x 20cm round sandwich tins. Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda and cocoa powder into a bowl and set aside. Place the butter and sugar in a large bowl and beat until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs and then the buttermilk, vanilla extract and red food colouring. Fold in the sifted flour mixture. Divide the mixture evenly between the tins. Bake for 25-30 minutes until firm to the touch. To make the chocolate icing put the chocolate and butter in a large heatproof bowl and set over a pan of simmering water until melted. Cool for 2-3 minutes and then stir in the cream. Leave at room temperature for 20 minutes and then chill for 30 minutes until the icing thickens. To make the frosting place the butter in a bowl and beat in vanilla extract. Gradually beat in the icing sugar until blended, and then beat in the soft cheese. Sandwich all three sponges together with two thirds of the frosting and all of the chocolate icing. Spread the rest of the frosting around the sides and over the top of the cake. Sprinkle the cake with chocolate chips and chill in the fridge until ready to serve.

Staffordshire Wildlife Trust T RU S T TO O P E N I T S T H I R D C H A R I T Y S H O P
The county’s largest nature conservation charity is excited to announce it is set to open its newest charity shop in Penkridge. Staffordshire Wildlife Trust has now opened its new store in the town in Market Street. This year is a very special year for the Trust with it being the charity’s 50th anniversary. The shop will help to support the Trust’s work across Staffordshire, including helping to run its 27 nature reserves, its conservation work and environmental education. The Penkridge shop will be the Trust’s third store, following on from the Leek shop which opened in 2015 and Rugeley shop in 2017.
“We hope people in the town like this new venture and we are looking forward to meeting our new customers. “To help support our shops, we are always in need of good quality donations. If anyone is having a clear out, we’d be extremely grateful if they could donate items to us which go towards supporting the shop.”
Items on sale include an array of traditional charity shop, pre-loved items will be on sale at the shop, including clothes, books, DVDs and games, as well as a range of new items. Builders and workmen have revamped the empty building.
Before the Penkridge shop opens, people can bring stock to either the Leek or Rugeley shops, or either of the Trust’s visitor centres – Wolseley, or Westport in Stoke-on-Trent. The Trust also requires volunteers to help with the running of the shop. Anyone interested should email penkridgeshop@staffs-wildlife.org.uk The Penkridge shop is open 9.30am-4.30pm Monday to Saturday.
Sue Chance, Head of Commercial for Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, said: “This year is a momentous year for our charity with it being our 50th anniversary. “We have lots planned for, and are very glad to have opened our new charity shop so early on as part of the celebrations."

Local motorhome company announces famous faces at 2019 opening event S TA F F O R D S H I R E - B A S E D T R AV E LW O R L D M OTO R H O M E S TO H O L D A W E E K- LO N G G R A N D O P E N I N G E V E N T wines back! I’m very much looking forward to steering you in the right direction at the Grand Opening, and to sharing with you a few wines you can look out for on your travels”. Pro mountain bike racer, Scott Beaumont, nicknamed, ‘Boom Boom’ will be performing stunts and chatting to guests on Saturday 23rd February. Super car BAC Mono will be on display and interactive showroom tours will be conducted by Travelworld representatives every day during the event. Competitions and prizes for all the family will be on offer and guests can preview a host of new motorhomes. Refreshments will be served daily. Staffordshire-based Travelworld Motorhomes has announced details of a week-long Grand Opening event to mark the start of operations at Creswell Park in Stafford. The event will run from Monday 18th until Sunday 24th February 2019. Monday 18th will feature outdoor enthusiast and TV presenter Julia Bradbury and renowned wine critic and TV personality, Jilly Goolden. Ross Edwards, managing director of Travelworld Motorhomes said: “We are very excited to be opening our doors to everyone. Julia and Jilly will bring to life what it means to own a motorhome and the kind of fun and healthy lifestyle motorhome ownership brings.”
The event will take place at Creswell Park, located just off junction 14 of the M6, and situated on a fiveacre site. The new glass fronted showrooms consist of a 25-bay workshop, extensive parking space, a large service centre to accommodate up to 25 large A-class motorhomes such as Hymer, Niesmann + Bischoff and Carado – brands Travelworld has become synonymous with. In acknowledgement of the growth and expansion of Travelworld, the 40 year old family-run company and UK Erwin Hymer Group dealer received a ‘highly commended’ accolade for Fastest Growing Business at the Midlands Family Business Awards.
Julia will be talking about why walking and camping are good for us, not just physically but valuable for our mental health too.
Ross Edwards said: “Our previous site in Telford served us well but as our award commendation indicates, we have grown considerably and recognised the need for a central location, Creswell Park is perfect for our continued growth and progress.
Julia said: “The nourishing beauty of the great outdoors is available for everyone and motorhoming can bring you one step closer to experiencing some of the most spectacular walking routes in the UK and beyond.
“2018 has been a tremendous year for Travelworld and we will start 2019 in the same spirit by welcoming all our valued customers and new visitors to what will be a must-see Grand Opening event.”
“It’s great to see how much the motorhome and camping industry is growing and I’m looking forward to telling you more about my outdoor adventures in the UK and my exciting new travels around Australia for my new ITV series. I can’t wait to be part of this very special occasion for Travelworld.” Jilly will be offering wines for guests to taste and sharing her knowledge of some of the best wine regions in Europe to visit in a motorhome. Jilly said: “The brilliant thing about touring the Continent in a motorhome is you can head for some marvellous wine regions, explore, taste the wines and bring the
