OF PENKRIDGE At our latest meeting we began by happily welcoming another two new members. On display was the second assignment of knitted blankets for the Hamlin Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia; the product of members busy efforts over the last few months – and more are already on their way!

Thanks to Diane Faarup for arranging delivery of them all to the collection centre.

Following the usual dissemination of information we were introduced to our speaker of the month, Chrissy Whereat on the topic “Barking Mad!” Chrissy had already circulated several photo albums of her “clients” to entice our interest.

From childhood Chrissy had always had a love for animals which ultimately led her to decide on becoming a pet sitter. Friends and family tried hard to dissuade her believing she would be bitten or at least have very difficult animals to manage on her own. Undeterred she applied for a training course - and the interview was impressively stringent as the role involves house sitting as well as full responsibility and care of peoples’ pets when they are away on holiday or business trips. The “clients” in the photo albums – were those pets!!

There were many tales to keep us laughing – from huge Pyrenean Mountain dogs to spiders! Then there were the 5 black Labradors – not to mention the sheep and goats which she only discovered after she arrived! Earthquakes in Dudley caused concern as 2 spaniels decided they were definitely not going to come out from under the bed – ever! ; Greyhounds in pyjamas and the undertaker’s tortoises all make life interesting when pet sitting She now has 59 regular clients scattered all over the country. She has never been bitten and only had to contend with some smelly dogs (who soon had a bath) and one rude and ungrateful owner!

We meet the 1st Monday of every month: Penkridge Methodist Hall at 7.30pm. Visitors (£4) and new members welcome to join us for entertainment and refreshment!

OF CANNOCK A special Birthday for President Di Jones was celebrated by Di sharing birthday cake with members at this month’s meeting. There were also congratulations for Mary Fullelove on her Golden Wedding Anniversary.

Three prospective new members were welcomed: Gilly Piddock, Barbara Horrobin and Pauline Lockley.

Our speaker this month was Adam Tilsley from Cannock and District Food Bank who explained the origins of the local food bank through Christian charities. The Church’s in the area are heavily involved in the distribution of donated food to anyone in need due to financial difficulties or being homeless. They also act as a support network giving advice where possible, and directing people to the relevant help services. Although their supplies of food are generously donated, there is a deficit in finance to help administer the service, and it is a fine balance to ensure the Food Bank continues.

Next month’s meeting will take the form of a quiz run by members as a social event to encourage communication and friendships.

W.I. members were extremely generous in providing food, toiletries, and sanitary products: some beautifully presented in baskets, for Adam to take away with him. The competition for food baskets was won by Win, Di and Rosemary.

National Trust Staffordshire Centre

Our latest event: Tour of Hadrian’s Arch Shugborough on 9th May 2019

The group was greeted by Rachael (Senior Surveyor NT) and Tim (Consultant Architect), and guided to the monument. When they reached the base, an explanation of the work that was taking place and the reasoning behind those actions was given.

It was explained that this activity is not a restoration, repair nor a clean but a careful inspection of the state of the arch and the remedial actions required to stabilise the monument.

When questions had been answered the group was split into two for the ‘ascent’ of the scaffolding, some 54 steps in total.

A detailed explanation was given for the different areas of the arch and how each specific area was being inspected and protected. It was made clear why the monument was not being cleaned as that would result in more damage to the structure.

Tim also explained the timescales involved in previous operations, these being stone repairs during the 1950s, and a further inspection and remedial work in the 1990s.

It is hoped the work being completed this time should

guarantee the structure for a further twenty to thirty years.

This means this was a unique opportunity for the members to get close to the Arch.

Summer Fruits P I E SUMMER FRUIT PIE Celebrate British summer fruits by treating yourself to this delicious Summer Fruit pie. A classic recipe for you and your family to enjoy.

SE RVE S 7 | R E A DY IN 1 HOUR

INGREDIENTS 350g plain flour 250g butter 140g icing sugar 100g ground almonds 1 large egg 750g mixed summer fruits (cherries, blueberries, blackcurrants, redcurrant and blackberries) 2 tbsp cornflour 2 tsp granulated sugar METHOD Heat your oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 5. Use a food processor to mix together the flour, butter and icing sugar together. Separate the egg yolk and mix with 1tbsp cold water before adding to the mix and using the food processor until the dough forms.

Wrap the pastry in cling film and chill in the fridge for 20-40 minutes.

Line a pie dish with half of your pastry, add baking beans and bake for 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, mix the berries, cornflour and 2 tbsp icing sugar. When your pie base comes out of the oven, remove the beans and then pour your berry mixture on top.

Roll out your remaining pastry and slice in to thin strips. Layer the strips in a lattice pattern on top of your pie. Whisk your egg white and use a pastry brush to brush a little around the rim of the pie, as well as the top of your lattice.

Sprinkle with granulated sugar and bake for 30 minutes until golden.

Enjoy with ice cream, cream or custard!

Cannock and District Soroptimists I RO N MA N J UN E 2019

Once again Cannock Soroptimists volunteered, both as bag packers and as race marshals, at the annual Staffordshire Ironman 70.3 race. Two days before the event, June Bould, Trish Mellor and Jackie Prince spent a day bag packing; they worked hard to ensure that all 2,500 competitors and those who marshal on the day of the event had everything they needed. They learned a lot about the hard work and complex planning that goes on behind the scenes to prepare for an international event of this scale.

Early on Sunday 9th June, 4 other members of Cannock Soroptimists: Val Jones, Jill Gooch, Dawn Pope and Olivia Lyons were in position near to Chasewater to marshal the first part of the bike ride section of the race. Competitors had already completed the 1.2 mile swim when they began the 56 mile bike ride on their way to Shugborough where they then ran a half marathon! A lovely

sunny morning ensured the race started on time. Soroptimist marshals were in awe of Lucy Charles-Barclay who swam the 1.2 mile in 15 degree water temperature with fastest overall swim. She continued her lead in the cycle section matching the speed of the pro-men; and was the fastest women’s runner, becoming overall women’s winner. All of the marshals thought it was a great experience being part of such an event, directing the riders and cheering them on. The competitors were so appreciative of the job all of the volunteer marshals do, shouting out their thanks and often sharing a joke about the day and the weather.

Ironman donates monies to charities in lieu of the help given by volunteers.

Donations to the club this year will help towards SI Cannock’s President Trish Smith’s charity this year which is Staffordshire Women’s Aid.

The next club meeting at the Barns, Huntington, will be at 7.00pm on Tuesday June 18th when the speaker will be a representative of the charity Mary’s Meals.

St. Leonard’s C.E. (VC) First School

ELSAs are Emotional Literacy Support Assistants. They are teaching assistants who have received specific additional training from educational psychologists from whom they receive on going supervision following training. Their role is to support children and young people in school to understand and regulate their own emotions whilst also respecting the feelings of those around them. Mrs Walker has recently trained as an ELSA. The pupils love spending time with her as they are able to share their thoughts and feelings, in a safe and supportive way.

The ELSA Network supports and assists ELSAs in their valuable work, as well as helping area co-ordinators to publicise ELSA work in their locality. Many local authorities across England and Wales now have ELSAs in their schools.

work in this very specialist area of education.

Pyjamarama Day. We raised monies for Book Trust and had a thoroughly, fabulous day!

Special thanks to our school cook, Diane. She cooked a full English breakfast for our visiting Dads, Uncles and friends to celebrate Father’s Day. The smell of bacon wafted through the corridors, while our pupils welcomed their loved ones. Thank you to everyone who supported this event.

Another important part of our St Leonard’s team is Minnie our ‘Sensory Assistance Dog’. Minnie has been with us since the beginning of the year and has had a very positive impact on the children by encouraging them to read to her, as well as helping the children to stay calm, relaxed and focussed. Minnie and the children love playtime together when they both get the opportunity to run around!

We also continue to raise money for many charities. Last week we held a

Things To Do This Summer AT P E N K R I D G E MARK E T

If you’re looking for ways to keep the kids entertained or simply a day out over the weekend, Penkridge Market have put together a host of interesting events to keep you busy this Summer.

With free admission to most of the events (or a nominal fee where specified) plus free parking, it’s an affordable way to keep the family entertained.

There will be a number of events and specialist Markets, as well as the regular traditional stall Markets, every Wednesday and Saturday from 9am – 3pm, so you will never be lost for something to do.

On the 4th July (and 1st August) there will be a fantastic Antiques and Collectors Fair. A variety of stall holders will be selling everything from fine jewellery and furniture to taxidermy and militaria.

If it’s militaria you’re interested in, then don’t miss the

selling everything from cakes, pies and preserves, to plants, handbags and hardware. If you fancy a bargain then don’t miss the Car Boot Sale, with approximately 50 ‘car booters’ expected and if you want to take part yourself, then simply turn up on the day from 6am.

If after all of that fun, the children are still complaining of being bored, why not get them to have a good clear out in time for the Children’s Market on the 15th September. The event will give parents the opportunity to sell all of those pre-loved toys, clothes and equipment, at an amazing price of just £12 a stall.

The event will run from 10am to 3pm and with a petting farm, magician, fairground and free craft area, there will be plenty to keep the children amused. The event is free for children with just a small charge of £2 per adult.

Millitaria Market on Sunday 7th July. Now considered to be the biggest millitaria fair in Staffordshire, there will be a whole host of artefacts from models and medals to hats and helmets. Admission to the event is just £2.50 for adults and free for children.

If you’re passionate about food and local produce, then the Fine Food and Craft Markets on the 20th July and 17th August are a must. There will be a wide variety of stalls selling delicious, local produce such as homemade cakes, pies and preserves, as well as interesting crafts.

If you would like to attend any of the events, Penkridge Market is situated in the centre of Penkridge, and is signposted off the A449. It is easily accessible from Junction 12 of the M6 and is only 6 miles from Stafford; 7 miles from Cannock and 10 miles from Wolverhampton (postcode ST19 5AS).

On Sunday the 21st July and 11th August, a Classic Car Show will be held on site, with a variety of cars to see, from pre-war to modern sports cars and super cars, there will be something for everyone to admire.

The event will run from 9.30am to 3pm and there will be a small charge of £5 per visitor.

The Bank Holiday Market and Car Boot Sale, on the 26th August is always one of the Market’s most popular events. Around 100 market stall holders will be
