Exciting Times and Big Changes AT ST L EO N A R D’ S FI R S T SCHO O L

Exciting times and big changes are taking place around our school grounds. At the bottom of the school field the ECO Warriors have been working tirelessly to turn our small woodland area into a bigger area by planting 40 new trees and planting lots of meadow plants. We have also been turning our old shed into an animal observatory and designing a huge bird feeding station with the help of Jaguar Land Rover. We have been able to construct a reflection area on the playground which will be completed in the next coming week. Unfortunately, we did have to lose a hedgerow for this to happen but it was fully checked for habitation and trees were planted in its place. In welcoming the school’s Oak tree into our school grounds, the children are able to reflect and think peacefully.

been facilitated by our sports premium funding; which has further funded the purchase of a whole new shed which is full of sports equipment!

This project was funded through school fund; monies raised by staff running the many after school clubs for the children to enjoy.

Such as: *Turning the wooden structure at the front of school into a wellie shed for all children to use. This will be able to house every child’s wellies and waterproof coats! *Replacing the vegetable beds with new wooden sleepers. * Placing guttering around the pavilion so that a solar irrigation kit can be used on the vegetable planters. *Installing a fence walk way up to the animal observatory and finally re-painting the mobile building.

Our trim trail is well on its way to being completed by the end of this half term. The design and outlay of this project was carried out by our school council who had many meetings with Miss Maaskant and Mrs Parton. This was to ensure that the children were able to choose equipment with safety and fun in mind. This project has

Theft of Registration Plate

Criminals steal number plates regularly. This is because they are now much harder to have manufactured unless you have all the right documentation. The chances of it happening to you are slim but do increase if you drive a vehicle that is currently popular with criminals and gangs. Number plates can be stolen for use in a variety of crimes, from petrol thefts through to cloning stolen cars for resale. Whilst the plates themselves are inexpensive, it can cause you a lot of inconvenience. You may need to prove your own innocence in civil parking infringements, congestion charges and speeding offences. You may even become subject to more serious criminal investigations. To help reduce the risk, fit number plates using tamper proof screws. Also fit Sold Secure approved plates. These plates are designed to disintegrate if removed. They won’t stop the loss of the plate but they will stop its use in criminal activity. Visit the Secured by Design website www.securedbydesign.com for more information.

Katharine House Hospice’s popular “Swing Fore Katharine” mixed golf day returns for its ninth year on 25th June at Brocton Hall Golf Club. The hospice is calling on local teams to take part. Katharine House Hospice Event Fundraiser Lisa Carson said:

of both. Players have the option of starting at 8:30am at £40 per person, including a 1 course lunch, or an afternoon shotgun at £50 per person, including a 2 course dinner. All taking part will enjoy a hot drink and bacon sandwich on arrival and free gifts. There will also be prizes for 1st – 3rd teams of each shotgun. To book your place for this popular event, see khhospice.org.uk or call the fundraising team on 01785 270808.

“We are delighted to partner with Western Power Distribution for a sixth year. Their generous sponsorship ensures that as much money as possible raised on the day is spent directly on patient care. Pickering and Butters Solicitors have supported the event from the start and we are extremely grateful for the generous support we receive from both of these partners.” This year’s Swing Fore Katharine event will take place at Brocton Hall Golf Club on Thursday 25th June and it promises to be a challenging day of golf in beautiful surroundings – with the added benefit of raising funds for a vital local cause.

Katharine House Hospice provides free care and support for adults and their families who are coping with progressive illness across mid-Staffordshire. It relies upon the kindness of the local community to help generate over 2/3rds of the funds needed to run its vital range of services.

Teams can be all male, female or any combination

OF PENKRIDGE At Bridgemere there was the opportunity of a welcome cup of tea or even a meal between hunting down those new plants for the garden and investigating the offers in the other shopping outlets.

Our first outing of the year was a chance for a good mooch and spend (if you felt inclined) exploring Dagfields, then onto Bridgemere Garden Centre. Twenty jolly women set off on their happy jaunt and although the weather was not at its best they carried on undeterred – well most of the day could be inside anyway! Dagfields is an amazing maze of buildings selling anything from stone lions to vintage clothing... and everything in between, ensuring lots of interest for all.

This was swiftly followed by our meeting on May Day Monday but it was anything but usual. It was the Annual Beetle Drive with fish and chip supper! Oysters did us proud again, delivering fabulous hot fish and chips. It was a hilarious event once more: after much frenetic play the winner was Caroline Officer who received an Easter Egg as her prize. Rachel Beard also received a prize – a miniature chocolate bunny – for achieving last place! Our thanks to Jackie Sharman for organising our trips and Irene Kirk for the Beetle Drive. Meetings are held on the first Monday of each month in Penkridge Methodist Hall. Visitors and new members are always welcome.

In addition to the step-by-step demonstration that Rosemary will do, she will also have illustrated painting notes and art materials for sale. Rosemary is an experienced art tutor who teaches a variety of mediums, subjects and styles of artwork. Rotary Club of Cannock

MAKE A D O N ATI O N TO FI R S T RE SPO NDE RS Service. The service is run by volunteers many working full time and responding in their spare time and on top of this, they regularly organise and support fundraising activities and provide free CPR and Defibrillator awareness sessions in their local communities including schools. On Tuesday 23 rd April 2019 the Rotary Club of Cannock made a donation of just over £5100 to the Burntwood & Cannock Chase Community First responders towards the purchase of a new emergency vehicle. The money was raised from the Rotary Clubs Christmas collection in Cannock and a substantial legacy left to the Cannock club Trust Fund by the late Dr Davasirvadam (David) Israel who had been an active Rotarian for over 30 years until he passed away in July 2018. The Cannock club members considered that by donating his legacy to this local medical emergency charity was very fitting seeing how Dr David Israel had himself served the local community of Cannock for so many years as a family doctor from his practice in Hednesford. Burntwood & Cannock Chase Community First Responders – Covering Burntwood, Cannock, Hednesford, and Heath Hayes was formed 8 years ago when the West Midlands Ambulance Service identified the need for a community-based Emergency Response

14

The cost of a new vehicle together with the installation of Terrafix, the communication system used by WMAS to send job information and give navigational support, vehicle livery markings and the conversion of the vehicle to a Rapid Response Vehicle is £40,000 and this donation has now enabled the vehicle to be ordered and put into service in the near future. From April 2017 to April 2018 the First Responders attended 1350 emergency calls helping to save many lives in our community. This group is the busiest scheme within the West Midlands Ambulance Service region. In 2018 the Group’s activities were recognised when they were presented with The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service is the highest award given to local volunteer groups across the UK to recognise outstanding work done in their own communities. When in service the new emergency vehicle will have both Dr David Israel name and the Rotary Rondal as part of this livery in recognition of the clubs donation.

National Trust Staffordshire Centre

The National Trust Staffordshire Centre held their 46th AGM last month and were able to report another successful fund raising year for the group. Over the past six years alone, the Centre has raised £22,000 for the Trust, with over £11,000 going to Shugborough over the last three years. This year, the Centre is starting a three year sponsorship of the new second hand bookshop at Shugborough, as well as contributing to the restoration of the walled garden. An innovation being introduced this year is a programme of free events at Shugborough, exclusively for members of the Centre. The first two were announced at the meeting and were an immediate success. These are in addition to the normal programme of walks, talks and visits that help members and their friends to gain maximum benefit from their Trust membership. At the meeting a cheque for £3,500 for the Shugborough Estate was presented to Hayley Mival – Area General Manager and was followed by an illuminating presentation by Alison Minshull – Consultancy Manager for the Trust – on the role of

W H AT ’ S O N I N J U N E AT PENKRIDGE LIBRARY Pyjamarama is coming!

Empathy Day

Libraries in South Staffordshire will be celebrating Pyjamarama between 3rd - 9th June.

The third National Empathy Day is 11 June 2019. Why we need a new empathy movement: Hate crimes are at their highest level since records began • Our public discourse is increasingly divisive • Our online lives can limit our experience of face to face human warmth • Social media’s algorithms drive us into silos, talking only to people like us Empathy Day is all about helping us understand each other better, the day to take some new steps on our empathy journey… On Empathy Day we want everyone to: • Read: because stories and book characters build our real-life empathy • Connect: make new connections with people, inspired by sharing stories • Do: put empathy into action in your home and community #ReadforEmpathy @EmpathyLabUK or at www.empathylab.uk/empathy-day

With free books, events and activities to encourage families to have fun reading together, anywhere and anytime. Pyjamarama, which used to be called National Bookstart Week, is an annual celebration of BookTrust’s flagship reading programme, Bookstart. Bookstart gives every child in England and Wales a free reading pack in the first year of their life and again when they are 3-4 years old. BookTrust works to remind families of the importance of reading for pleasure – even if it’s just for ten minutes a day. The picture book for 2019 is Car, Car, Truck, Jeep by Katrina Charman and Nick Sharratt, published by Bloomsbury. Children who attend any of the events or who just pop in and join the Library will receive a free copy of the book. There will also be rhyme sheets and headband crafts!

Calling all 13-24 Year Old Volunteers! Volunteer to help with the Summer Reading Challenge at your library! The Summer Reading Challenge starts on 13th July, this year we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Summer Reading Challenge with an exciting space theme, to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the first Moon landing, which is sure to be lots of fun for everyone. Musical Youth Theatre Stafford SET TO PERFO RM ‘DIVINE’ M US IC A L G O D SP E LL

Musical Youth Theatre Stafford (MYTS) are hard at work fine tuning their harmonies and honing their dance moves for the critically acclaimed GODSPELL, which they will perform at the Stafford Gatehouse Theatre this July. GODSPELL, an eclectic rock musical that is based on the gospel according to Matthew, was written by three-time Grammy and Academy Award winner, Stephen Schwartz, who also wrote Wicked, Children of Eden and Pippin. When GODSPELL hit Broadway in 1971, it took the world by storm and has been successfully performed worldwide ever since. It has undergone several revivals and MYTS will be performing the 2012 version injected with contemporary references and dazzling new arrangements, though the musical still features the international hit ‘Day by Day’ as well as well-known songs such as ‘All for the Best’, ‘By my Side’ and ‘Light of the World’.

Their 12th show at the Gatehouse Theatre since the group was founded by Musical Theatre Stafford (then Stafford Operatic Society) in 2007, MYTS are no strangers to the hard work it takes to put on a performance like this. Rehearsing every Friday night during the term and some Sundays, the group are well on their way to having yet another fantastic show to share with Staffordshire audiences. Their current production team, director Hannah Morris and musical director, Laura Foxcroft, have been joined this year by choreographer, Kalvin Lamey. Who has injected a new, contemporary style to GODSPELL and is really challenging the children to push themselves. As well as getting show ready for their five performances at the Stafford Gatehouse Theatre this July, MYTS have already performed extracts from the show on several occasions, performing a medley from GODSPELL at their annual concert as well as delighting

24

audiences at SSPA Events Stafford’s Gotta Sing this February. They also performed at SSPA’s Stafford’s Gotta Dance in May, where they entertained hundreds of parents and children with some of the fantastic choreography from the show, and headlined at Stafford in the World, where they performed two sets from the show to a packed Market Square. MYTS aims to foster a love of musical theatre, singing, acting, dancing and performing in children between the ages of 8 and 18. Since their inception, MYTS have gone from strength to strength averaging sixty-five to seventy members a year. They perform a fully staged show at the Stafford Gatehouse Theatre each July, bringing shows like Dr Seuss’ Suessical the Musical, Footloose, Les Misérables, andWestside Story to the Stafford stage. The group have won two NODA (National Operatic & Dramatic Association) Awards for Best Youth Musical for their production of Children of Eden in 2011 and Honk! In 2015 and were nominated for the Best Youth Production award for their last two shows, Legally Blonde in 2017 and High School Musical their 2018. MYTS are currently hard at work putting the finishing touches to their current show, GODSPELL at the Gatehouse Theatre this July, and will be joining the adult society, Musical Theatre Stafford this October, for a joint production of Oliver! Tickets for GODSPELL are available direct from the Stafford Gatehouse Theatre Box Office on 01785 619080 or online at www.myts.org.uk/godspell.

St George’s Day Celebration

FOR C A N N O C K B O W L I N G GRE E N C LUB Cannock Bowling Green Club brought a little colour to the town centre on Tuesday 23rd April to celebrate St George’s Day. The flag of St George was raised to mark the occasion at 10.00am on a beautiful sunny morning. President Mike Mellor welcomed members and gave a brief address on the history of St George who was made Patron Saint of England in 1350 by King Edward III. He concluded by making reference to William Shakespeare who wrote the famous pre-battle speech for King Henry V which ends with “Cry God for Harry, England and St George!” to ensure no-one would forget St George. There followed a keenly fought competition amongst members which continued until late afternoon being won by Ted Dawson who played Barrie Smith in the final. President Mike congratulated Ted on a fine win! The Club will be supporting the Summer Fete to be held in the Town Centre and at St Luke’s Church on 13th July by arranging a social bowling match with their Ladies and guests.

Wing Chun Kung Fu

Made famous in the 1970’s in Bruce Lee movies, and latterly in the Ip Man movies, it is a traditional chinese fighting/self defence system. Wing chun is a very direct, straightforward system, with hand forms, a pole form, double knife forms, and a wooden dummy form; and of course chi sao, the “sticky hands” practice wing chun is also famous for. The style we practice traces it’s lineage back to Ip Man in Foshan, China, and has been passed down through one of his students, the late Master Lun Kai, to Master Derek Frearson, who spent many years travelling to China to study with Master Lun Kai; the class teacher Sifu Jon, has been a private student of Master Derek Frearson for some years now. Foshan Wing Chun is a very effective fighting system with an upright stance and low kicks, using the principles of good body mechanics; as a consequence it is a very practical closequarters system of fighting and self-defence, and is suitable for people of all statures. Wing chun is suitable for all ages to learn, however young children wishing to study will need to discuss this with Sifu Jon. The weapons skills practised in the system allow the student to develop more fully, and also provide sound, transferable skills in handling any useful object for self-defence.

Teaching is in a structured, traditional fashion, with students able to progress through the entire system as they learn. Classes are relaxed and friendly; we do not tolerate aggression towards fellow students, and we actively encourage everyone to participate fully in the study of wing chun. 28

Beginners classes are at the Greensforge Sailing Club, Calf Heath Reservoir on a Tuesday evening at 8pm, and there are further classes at Dunston Village Hall, for more experienced students. Advanced classes and private lessons are also available.

For more information, contact Jon on 07973 830880, or email: silverdragonkungfu@outlook.com

Silver Dragon Kung Fu is affiliated to the International Taijiquan and Shaolin Wushu Association – ITSWA – run by Master Derek Frearson, and the Ou Rongju Zhirou Neijia Association, President and Chief Instructor Master Derek Frearson. www.traditionalwushu.com Master Frearson has classes in Leicester at the Peepul Centre on a Tuesday evening, and free “Tai Chi taster” training every Saturday in the Market Square in Leicester town centre.

Tai Chi by the Lake

Every Tuesday evening 6:45pm-7:45pm Beginners Tai Chi and Qi Gong classes have started at Greensforge Sailing Club, Calf Heath Reservoir. Classes will be every Tuesday evening at 6:45pm - 7:45pm. Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese martial art, practised all over the world as a low-impact exercise system, with numerous proven health benefits including reduced blood pressure, improved balance, better core strength and a relaxed, more mindful mental state. This is a small, friendly class, learning the basics of Tai Chi and Qi Gong, which are both slow, effective exercises for the body and mind. It is a great introduction to learning more about Tai Chi; you will learn a basic, short series of Qi Gong exercises; a short “empty hand pattern of movements; and a traditional family dao (Chinese broadsword) pattern. Wooden training swords are provided for this. Classes are reasonable priced, the atmosphere is relaxed and informal. Class sizes are kept small to provide each student with better attention. We ask only that you have respect for your fellow students, and enjoy the learning and companionship of your fellow students. Private tuition is also available on request.

Cannock & District Ladies Probus E NJ OY A TA L K FRO M S H E ILA B URRO WS Our own member Sheila Burrows entertained us at last month’s meeting with a talk about her varied career as she combined her nursing and occupational health role with that of a hostess of Ann Summers parties. The party plan phenomenon started in the sixties, with Tupperware, Avon, and Pippa Dee.

By the nineties, when Sheila joined, Ann Summers had become a well-established home-based selling/buying opportunity for women who wanted to browse and shop for sexy lingerie and sex toys in an all-female, safe, home environment with friends and family ensuring an

enjoyable party atmosphere. The company has gone from strength to strength and now has many high street shops, but when Sheila started, women were a lot more reserve: but Sheila was able to put them at ease and played slightly risky games to get them relaxed and in the mood! A good time was ensured and many linked bookings were made with Sheila winning awards for high sales records. Members agreed that if she was still a representative a few bookings would ensue! June’s meeting will have members afloat on the tide with Patrick Garnett giving a talk entitled “We are Sailing”. Guests are welcome if they book in advance. Meetings for Cannock and District Ladies Probus are held on the first Thursday of each month at The Chase Golf and Country Club where they share a meal, and usually have a speaker.

From Village Vocals to Local Vocals WHEATO N A STON CHO I R E X PAN D S

Christmas approached and we revived songs we were familiar with and performed at a few events – with many compliments. We enjoy singing a variety of songs; show tunes, swing, pop, old time and use backing tracks. We are also looking to expand our performances maybe not the symphony hall yet but you never know! Last summer our much loved choir leader Ruth had to leave due to other commitments. Ruth started the choir over 5 years ago holding rehearsals every Monday evening in Wheaton Aston Village Hall.

The choir meets every Monday 7.30-9pm, termtime only in Wheaton Aston Village Hall. There are no auditions as our main aim is to enjoy ourselves whilst singing together.

Everyone was so saddened that they wouldn’t be meeting each Monday, the choir was so much more than just singing it was an opportunity for like-minded people to meet and enjoy each other’s company whilst singing – good for the soul, so they say!

So to the future, we have new choir members and now total 30 members. We would now like to employ someone who could lead us, teach new songs and harmonies, and to polish our repertoire for any future concerts. Our current leader (who is doing an amazing job) is a busy paediatrician with young children and training to swim the channel – exhausting enough let alone trying to lead the choir. If you are interested please email us at localvocals18@gmail or visit Local Vocals facebook page to take a look and send us a message.

It was decided to relaunch the choir, with a slight change of name, on 10th September 2018. The start was a little tentative – who would lead us? Organise bookings? Select music? So a small committee was formed. One of the choir members was asked to lead us and we began to sing!

OF CANNOCK This month’s meeting was the Annual Meeting where the secretary, Jill Gooch, gave a report to remind members of all the activities they had experienced over the past year; and how the committee have responded to members views in planning next year’s programme. Helen had arranged a varied programme of speakers, and throughout all our meetings Sue has provided a raffle resulting in many members taking home lovely prizes. Win has supplied us with a book stall, encouraging us all to read more; and share our used books; and Susan has run a competition table. Treasurer and Social Secretary Barbara Matthews has arranged some excellent trips and holidays which assist in making new friendships and offer the opportunity to socialise within the safe confines of a group of women who are caring and fun. Barbara appears to conduct all these events with an ease and grace to ensure everyone has a really good time and that everyone’s needs are met. This WI community project which now stands at £666 is largely due to Helen’s great efforts with Bring and Buy stalls.

Members have made hats and scarves for children in the Townships of South Africa; We also donate toiletries to Women’s Aid for victims escaping a violent relationship. Always aiming to embrace the aims of the WI, and in their national campaigns. Many members had attended a varied program of events through Staffordshire Federation W.I. And we all “Shared the Love” when wearing green hearts to promote awareness of all the things we love which could be lost to climate change. Our profile has been raised by many press releases. This promotion has been instrumental in attracting 5 new members this year: which will ensure the Club’s future survival as many other Clubs find their ageing membership declining. Under Helen’s leadership as President we have a Club to be proud of; building on the strength of a well-established club, we are well placed for Diana Jones to take over and move forward to embrace the ideals of the wider WI community. Our W.I. meetings are on the second Thursday of the month 10.30am at St Luke’s Church Centre, Cannock. Visitors are always welcome to come and join us for refreshments and a chat.
