Scarecrow Trail AT AC TO N T R U S S E L L 2 0 1 9
Scarecrows have been popping up in Acton Trussell for several years as part of the village’s entry into the Best Kept Village Competition (formerly organized by the Community Council, now organized by the Community Foundation of Staffordshire) and have been praised by villagers and visitors alike.
This year the BKV Team decided to put together a Trail for everyone to enjoy, and produced a map showing where the 54 scarecrows could be found. No specific route was suggested, everyone could wander around the village as they pleased, and many did! Over 100 maps were issued, and as most were issued to family groups, this represents possibly 400 people enjoying the village. The Trail, which ran until 21 July, started and finished at the Moat House, where people could leave their cars, collect a map from Reception and head off around the village. Everyone was invited to vote for their favourite scarecrow and the results will be announced at the Village BBQ (to be held at the Community Centre) on 31 August.

Annual Civic Award PENKRIDGE PARISH COUNCIL
It is with great pleasure that we announce the winner of the 2019 Penkridge Parish Council Civic Award is Mr Tim Rowlands. He is a very well known and popular gentleman, known by most of the village for his outstanding contribution to the community through his charitable works. These include raising large amounts of money for the Midlands Air Ambulance by organising an array of events. Funding is vital for its continued operation and no one knows when we may need the service ourselves. Tim is also heavily involved with Penkridge Round Table, helping organise and run the local Fun Run and Christmas Sleigh Tours. Every year you will find him at the Scout Bonfire being the DJ and adding his own personal style to the event. Tim is a shining example of a truly community minded volunteer and a great role model for our younger generation to look up to. C O N S I D ER GE T T ING A B URG L AR ALARM Consider getting a burglar alarm. A good intruder alarm can be a valuable addition to the security of your home. Good alarm companies will belong to a watchdog group, either the SSAIB or the NSI. This is essential if you want to ensure police are informed when your alarm goes off. Normally these are the systems that your insurance provider will offer you a discount on your policy for. There are two main types of intruder alarm: Police response alarms (Type A) These are remotely monitored security systems which the police will respond to. These are not recommended for the majority of domestic properties due to the cost and complexity. They are more appropriate for large or isolated properties containing high value items. Non-police response alarms (Type B) These are audible-only alarms and are more suitable for domestic properties. We recommend Type B alarms that meet the current BSEN 50131-1 standard.
Considerations: We do not recommend the use of “dummy alarms”. Experienced burglars can spot “dummy” or unserviced alarms. An alarm will not be enough to deter burglars if you do not secure other areas of your property. See our advice on door and window security, garden security and shed and outbuilding security at www.staffordshire.police.uk/info If you have good neighbours or friends and relatives nearby, upgrade the alarm to include an auto-dialler to call either yourself or your neighbours should the alarm activate. If you have pets, be sure to install internal sensors correctly. We never recommend that you attempt to install an alarm system yourself. Simple DIY systems are not likely to meet the requirements of your house insurance. They may even cause more false activations. If you have been a victim of a burglary, call 101 to report it. If a burglary is in progress and you are in immediate danger, call 999.

COACH VISIT TO NETHER ALDERLEY AND QUARRY BANK MILLS
T H U R S D AY 12 T H S E P T E M B E R 201 9 These two mills are less than 8 miles apart, so we are taking the opportunity to visit both place in one day. Nether Alderley Mill, concealed under the long sloping roof of the medieval building is a fully restored, working corn mill. We will take a guided tour, and learn all about the process of milling and hear fascinating stories about the lives of the millers. Please note: Access to the upper floor is limited, but there is a virtual tour on the ground floor. There are no toilets here but there will be a comfort stop on route.
We travel to Quarry Bank for lunch in one of the restaurants or a picnic in one of the designated areas. You will be free to discover the very different worlds of owners and workers, who lived and worked side by side. You will discover what it was like to work in a cotton mill, see heritage machinery in action and feel the floors shake beneath your feet as the spinning machines turn and the looms weave. You can explore the domestic life of the Greg family in Quarry Bank House. We will take a guided tour of the Apprentice House and step into the lives of the pauper children who worked in the mill. We leave at 4.00 pm to journey back to Stafford. Robot Constructor’s Challenge 2019 THE CANNOCK CHASE U3A
Community group, Cannock Chase U3A are hosting a day of challenges open to anyone, where moving robot type constructions capable of being remotely or autonomously controlled are set a series of challenges. The use of programmable devices such as Raspberry Pi or Arduino would be ideal, but not essential. We are seeking individuals or teams for entering their creations in Crazy Golf, Egg & Spoon Race, Skittles and more challenges. This would be of interest to those who enjoy constructing projects, robots or coding. Spectators are also very welcome to see the event and view U3A interest groups available from Stafford and Cannock Chase U3A. OF PENKRIDGE Taking Shirley Valentine To Greece Our speaker for the August meeting was Audrey
Hall. In the 1970’s Audrey enjoyed holidays sailing
around the Geek islands, especially Skiathos, with
her husband Brian. They also had a shared interest in theatre. In 1992 Audrey went to see a
one-woman play “Shirley Valentine” which inspired her to consider tackling the role herself. She sent for the script but was dismayed to see how
immense and complicated it was- especially having to cook chips and egg live on stage. “Still”, she
thought,” if others can do it why can’t I?” and so the work began!
It would be a very expensive undertaking so Brian set about finding sponsorship and fund raising (very successfully) while Audrey learned the script. After a lot of hard work and with the support of family and friends they finally put on a production in 1996 in Lichfield, then again 2 years later in Burton on Trent, attracting audiences of over 400 a night reflecting how well this one-woman show was received. All profits have been donated to St Giles Hospice (Wittington).

There was concern that the local stray dog would wander onto the set, but ingenious locals kept him away by putting out food! Two priests arrived unexpectedly and blessed the set! At 8.30pm the play started. Audrey felt terrified; she had to be word perfect, there was no-one to prompt. The night sky was filled with stars, the air was flower

Back in England Brian again raised the funding – scenery and props had to be flown to the little Greek island with extras (no convenient shops for replacements!). A charter airline, JMC, offered to fly all equipment out for free and helped with publicity at the check in desk! With the help of the beach café owners’ son Saki as interpreter, a stage was organised- the café garden, advertising leaflets were distributed BUT it would take along time – if ever, to get a permit to sell tickets! Solution? – ask for donations for local charities. The

The Children’s Market gives parents the opportunity to buy and sell nearly new items, as well as new products such as handmade crafts, whilst the kids are having fun. Blackberry
Jam
INGREDIENTS 2KG BLACKBERRIES 1.5KG JAM SUGAR IDEALLY WITH ADDED PECTIN 1 LEMON TEASPOON OF BUTTER
METHOD Place your blackberries in a large bowl and cover with 1.5kg of jam sugar. Cover the bowl and leave at room temperature to absorb. Ideally leave the blackberries and sugar overnight. Tip the blackberries and sugar mixture in to a large based saucepan. Juice the lemon and stir into the saucepan with the blackberries and sugar. Slowly cook the blackberries over a low heat until the sugar completely dissolves. Once dissolved, bring to the boil and simmer for a few minutes. Check your jam is ready by spooning a small amount out on to a plate. Once cooled, lightly press the jam to check it is the right consistency.

If you’re happy with the consistency of the jam, stir your teaspoon of butter in to the saucepan. Leave the jam to cool before decanting in to jam jars. Refrigerate and enjoy on hot buttery toast!

enormous fortunes made. These days they are beautifully floodlit thus creating an amazing spectacle for visitors and prove a popular venue for weddings and concerts.
On the hottest day of the year our group of 30 met on the Quayside of the canal that runs through the Black Country Museum. After donning hard hats, we boarded the 11am canal boat and soon moved from the bright sunshine to the dark world of canal tunnels under Dudley’s Wren’s Nest National Nature Reserve. The canal tour wended through a maze of vast caverns where once limestone was mined and
Tour over and with heightened appetites we drove the short distance to The Black Country’s famous Mad O’Rourke’s Pie Factory in Tipton, home of the famous Lump Hammer Beer and of course their renowned pies including the “Desperate Dan Cow Pie”. Upon leaving the pub we all agreed that it had been another great day. We generally have an outing each month - wives, partners and friends are most welcome.
