Wolgarston High School C E L E B R AT I N G C H I N E S E N E W Y E A R
Wolgarston High School has been busy celebrating Chinese New Year, this has been an annual event for the past six years. “I think it is great to learn about and engage in other cultures and their traditions,” said James Lloyd (Year 12 Student). On Tuesday 5th February our students started to take part in fun educational activities around school. “It is an ideal opportunity for our students to learn about Chinese culture and its similarities and differences to ours,” said Mr Skinner (Head of Pyrenees and teacher of PE), “House assemblies have been taking place in which students have been able to see what life is like in China for students and what their regular school day entails compared to their own.” The documentary showed how students in China are expected to be in school for 7am every day and have the responsibility for cleaning their classrooms and school facilities. As well as students having these responsibilities they always remain in the same classroom throughout the day and their first lessons start at 8am and finish at 9pm at night. “It makes you realise how lucky we are to be at the school we are at and how long our school day actually is,” said Stuart Clarke (Year 10 student). Our Canteen also took part in the festivities by creating and serving up a special Chinese themed menu serving Hoi Sin roast pork baps, Chinese chicken curry and sweet and sour chicken. “It is great to be part of events like these,” said Mr Wood (Catering Manager), “To see our students trying out new foods and sharing their experiences with peers and staff. We sold out of everything, everyone really enjoyed it.” On Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th some of our Year 9 students took part in Mrs Beach’s Annual Chinese New Year Chopstick Challenge and learnt about the health benefits of Chinese food as well as how woks use conduction to cook the food within them. “As always I take this challenge seriously. Mrs Fillingham (Learning Mentor) and myself were there to adjudicate so that there was no cheating,” said Mrs Beach (Teacher of D & T), “Our students learnt how tricky it is to use chopsticks for the first time, especially when trying to pick up the bits of pasta to place into their bowls. However this year I must say I was really impressed at how many students this year completed my challenge. Natalie Newman was overall winner with the fastest time of thirty seconds. Everyone who completed my challenge received a fortune cookie.” On Thursday 7th and Friday 8th of February Mrs Beach and her Year 10 students learnt new knife skills from slicing, Julienne to shredding and the benefits of a Chinese diet. All of the students learnt how to make spring rolls. Students brought in items that represented the Chinese culture that they had at home. The students used these items to display their food to develop their food presentation skills. “It was
4
brilliant to see our students amercing themselves with Chinese culture understand the importance of symbolism of them. Our students learnt how healthy Chinese food can be and can count towards our five a day,” said Mrs Beach (Teacher of D & T), “This is a great healthy method of oven cooking because it uses little fat, cooks quickly which helps to keep all of those important nutrients in the ingredients and - most importantly - it tastes fantastic. A healthy, tasty fun time was had by all which is the perfect way to Celebrate the Chinese New year of the Pig!” Our Library has got it’s decorations up ready opening its doors up to our Year 9’s ready to take part in our new Accelerated Reader Challenge. For every book that a student reads during February and they pass a comprehension test on it they will receive a fortune cookie. “Last year our students were amazing,” said Miss Roberts (Learning Resources Centre Administrator), “I wonder if this year’s Year 9 students will beat the record set by last year’s students of 160 books?” Mr Phillips (Teacher of PE and Business Studies) and his Year 13 students took part in a range of activities focusing on how the Chinese economy is centralised on manufacturing and exporting as well as what life is like for workers in the factories. “It was brilliant to see how our Year 13’s were able to compare and contrast the similarities and differences between our business practices and China’s,” said Mr Phillips, “How working for a Chinese business is a massive component of worker’s lives and how companies are able to retain by implementing loyalty strategies from supplying their worker’s accommodation and providing their children with education. It is really is fascinating.” Chinese New Year starts on Tuesday February 5th and ends on January 24th, 2020. The Pig occupies the last (12th) position in the Chinese Zodiac. You are a pig” if you are born in one of these years: 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019 . According to the Chinese astrology 2019 is going to be a great year to make money and a good year to invest! 2019 is going to be full of joy and will be a year of friendship and love for all the zodiac signs it is an auspicious year because the Pig attracts success in all the spheres of life.

Probus Has A Finger In The Pie C A N N O C K & D I S T R I C T M E N ’ S P RO B U S C L U B
This month’s club outing to Brockleby’s Pies near Melton Mowbray proved a stunner. Members and guests, having donned “Mop Caps & Aprons”, were first told about the origins of the famous pies, followed by a pie making demonstration and then, with much hilarity, all participated in making their own individual takeaway pies for home baking. The visit was preceded by a delicious lunch in the amazing ski lodge atmosphere of the adjacent highly rated Alpine Restaurant. The club meets bi-weekly on a Monday. National Trust Staffordshire U P C O M I N G TA L K S SPRING 2019
‘The work of BIFoR’ Tuesday 12th March Interesting and very necessary research is being carried out by the Birmingham Institute for Forest Research. The aim of the 10 year FACE [Free Air Carbon Dioxide] experiments is to establish what effect increasing levels of carbon dioxide in the environment will have on forest and wood land wildlife, on those peoples who live in forests, on forest products for industry, building, agriculture, and most importantly on our health and well-being. To find out how a small woodland area in Norbury is being exposed to increasingly higher levels of CO2, the technology involved and the information gained so far, come and listen to a member of the research team who will explain all.
‘The Role of Supporter Groups’ Tuesday 9th April This talk will take place after the AGM. Our speaker, Alison Minshall, has worked for the National Trust for over 11 years and for most of those years has had direct involvement with visitors, supporter groups and community. Currently

OF PENKRIDGE This month the members were rather distracted at the start of the meeting while the usual dissemination of information was completed. Sat in the corner, looking serenely cute was Thane, a 9 month old barn owl, accompanied by Andrew Campbell from the Haughton Owl Rescue Centre! Initially rather sleepy, she soon woke up as Andrew presented an entertaining and informative talk about the centre and its work. The centre aims to rehabilitate all types of injured or sick birds and release them back to the wild, however, there are currently 50 birds who are permanent residents. Many of the owls living at the centre are there for 3 main reasons: private owners cannot care for them properly and hand them over; shooting and poisoning; road traffic accidents. Andrew kept us enthralled as we learnt about the adaptions that make an owl! –clearly demonstrated by Thane as she was allowed to free fly. Special feathers ensure soundless flight while having 7 extra vertebrae in the neck explains that 360 degree rotation; but this is necessary as an owl cannot look left or right, up or down! Many members knew that the beautiful heart shaped face was to help focus sound, but asymmetrical ears with selective sound (to pinpoint that mouse!) was fascinating, as was the sensory feathers on the feet to aid landing on branches, or food, as owls can’t see close up! And those eyes can be black or yellow depending on whether they are a nocturnal or diurnal owl, although owls will hunt at any time of day if they are hungry! 28
There are 5 native breeds of owl in Britain and many are endangered, mainly due to loss of habitat and pesticides. One owl can eat between 3000 to 5000 mice and rats a year, but the poisons in the mice accumulate and kill the owl. The centre will provide owl nesting boxes where appropriate: those lovely barn conversion homes are no home for a barn owl! The Owl Centre as Haughton has reopened for visitors and many members look forward to seeing Thane, and Andrew, again! New members are always welcome to our meetings on the 1st Monday of the month, 7.30pm at the Methodist Hall in Penkridge.

New Trees for Hednesford Park T H E R O TA R Y C L U B O F C A N N O C K
Members of the club then moved on to plant some 30 copse trees obtained from the Woodland Trust which when fully grown would help to reduce the worlds carbon emissions. This is now the second year the Interact Club has been involved has been involved with The Friends of Hednesford Park and they are already planning further environmental projects to continue their involvement with the park. On Wednesday 13th February members of the Chase Interact Club supported by the Rotary Club of Cannock spend the morning volunteering in Hednesford Park. The Interact Club firstly planted 1000 purple crocus in support of the Rotary Project ‘End Polio Now’ who’s aim is to rid the world of polio. The vibrant purple colour of the flowers represents the indelible purple dye the children dip their fingers in to show they have been immunised against the debilitating disease.
36
The Chase Interact Club which is supported by the Rotary Club of Cannock is now well into its third year, is a youth club for 1218 year olds and is based at the Cannock Grammar School. Each year Interactors complete at least two community projects one of which is overseas, helping them build friendships and better understanding with young people in other countries. Popular Children’s Market Returns P E N K R I D G E C H I L D R E N ’ S M A R K E T - S U N DAY 7 T H A P R I L
Due to popular demand, Penkridge Market will be holding another fantastic Children’s Market on Sunday the 7th April. The Market, which will be entirely dedicated to children, will feature stalls selling everything from nearly new children’s clothes to toys and handmade crafts. There will also be plenty of activities to keep the children entertained, with a petting farm, donkey rides, Diddi Dance taster sessions, fairground, free craft area and much much more. The event will run from 10am to 3pm, and with free admission for children and only £2 for adults, it’s a great affordable day out for all the family. Over 60 stall holders are anticipated, selling a variety of goods from clothes, toys and books to handmade knitted baby wear and wooden gifts. The majority of stalls will be undercover in the indoor market, making it a fun day out whatever the weather.
Kate Kingsley, who was the brain child behind the event said: “We had a fantastic response to the event last year, with thousands of people attending and commenting on how much they enjoyed the day. I think parents really valued the fact that they could pick up incredible bargains, all in one place and keep the children entertained at the same time. Making it feel more like a fun day out, rather than dragging the kids around the shops. I think anything we can do to make parents lives easier and more affordable is much appreciated.”

This new event, which was held for the first time in April 2017, has proved so popular with the public, the owners have now decided to hold it twice a year, on the 7th April and 15th September.
Local children’s clubs, groups and organisations will also be attending, so that families can find out more information about the services available in the local area. If you would like to attend the event, Penkridge Market is situated in the centre of Penkridge, and is signposted off the A449. It is easily accessible from Junction 12 of the M6 and is only 6 miles from Stafford; 7 miles from Cannock and 10 miles from Wolverhampton (postcode ST19 5AS).

THE FUTURE OF PENKRIDGE LIBRARY Over the last few years, members of the Friends of Penkridge Library, and our wider community have campaigned to retain a village library that benefits our community for the foreseeable future. With over 2,500 members, Penkridge library plays an important role in educating our children, reducing isolation and ensuring everyone has an opportunity to learn and explore their interests, free of charge. It is therefore disappointing that despite submitting petitions to the House of Commons (3,500 signatures) and over 1,000 responses to the recent library consultation in support of our professional library service, Staffordshire County Council have announced plans that ignore local opinion and removes Penkridge library staff later this year. The transition from a professional to ‘Community’ library presents new challenges, not least in the identification of a partner organisation to liaise with library volunteers and help steer the direction of the service over the next five years. With bids being accepted until the end of last
year, we are delighted that Penkridge Parish Council recognised the value of our library and voted to submit a bid into the process. Furthermore, understanding the potential for the library to grow with our expanding village, Council debates highlighted the desire to maintain a professional service, with supporting funds to facilitate the skilled coordination of volunteers once the current staffed service is removed. We would therefore like to congratulate Penkridge Parish Council on submitting the winning bid, and taking the opportunity to positively influence our local services. While the loss of our staff is devastating to all library users, their legacy will be a standard to which we can but hope to aspire. As such, it is now up to our community to continue working with the Parish Council to keep Penkridge library a place where everyone feels welcome. So, to those of you who have taken the time to write to your Councillors, respond to consultations, organise petitions, attend meetings and value your library and library staff, we thank you for all your support. Looking to volunteer? Find out more info on page 38.
