OF BREWOOD

Brewood Afternoon WI have had a busy time recently! In the first week of April twelve of our members visited Jackfield Tile Museum, one of the Ironbridge Gorge Museums. Our visit started with a session of tile decorating in the well equipped workroom. Each member was able to decorate their own tile; mpire Appliances choosing an idea from a bank go amend of tile designs or use their own personal inspiration. Needless to say we all chose to copy one of the lovely designs which we could see displayed around the room. The method used to embellish the tile was very similar to icing a cake, so you could say it was right up our WI Street! After adding coloured slip we left the tiles to be fired at the museum. The finished results will be displayed at our next WI meeting for all to see! After a light

lunch in the cafĂŠ we spent an interesting hour looking round the tile museum and Jackfield Church. The following week was our usual monthly meeting where we enjoyed a very interesting talk from Elizabeth Woodall about Cookery Books Through The Ages. Elizabeth told us she has a collection of over 7000 cook books and had just moved house! She actually brought a great number of them to share with us and to illustrate her talk. They ranged from weighty tombs such as Mrs Beeton to thin pamphlets issued in war time. As a WI member herself she collects WI cook books from national, county and individual institutes and she also has a selection of WI memorabilia which she kindly displayed for us.

Brewood Afternoon WI meets on the 2nd Monday of the month in the Jubilee Hall Brewood at 2pm and visitors are always welcome. For more information contact our secretary Linda on: 01902 248178

OF PENKRIDGE Since the last report Hyde Lea and Coppenhall WI organised the latest of our Penkvale Group meetings. The speaker was Andy French on the topic “The History of Tourism”. We were kept equally amused and entertained as he led us through the development of the package holiday from its earliest inception with Thomas Cook to modern day online booking. It was surprising to learn that the piers at many resorts were for the privileged few who could afford holidays but had to travel by boat as there were no trains – the idea of entertainment at the end of the pier came later as locals realised the potential to make money as passengers alighted from the boats. We began our regular monthly meeting on a more sombre note as we sadly had to report the passing of two of our members following sudden illnesses.

Apparently you never need a manicure if you play a ukulele as the strumming wears your nails downindeed acrylic nails are a hazard as the can fly off into the audience! Many of her songs were based on the Hawaiian language and we were encouraged to sing along with the chorus to “Let’s Talk Dirty” as nobody could understand what we were saying!

On a lighter note we sang Jerusalem – with a difference, as this time we were accompanied by our speaker, Gabriela LaFoley on her ukulele, which lifted our spirits and made our singing sound particularly good!

Who would have thought buying a swimsuit could cause such hilarity: a choice between those in the maternity department or “fluorescent hi-tensile rubber bands”, and her accurate depiction of trying to get into such a garment (Oh! what happened to various body parts that disappeared, only to pop out elsewhere!) had us in stitches! All agreed we had a great evening!

There followed a full fun-packed hour of singing and anecdotes with members becoming dusky Hawaiian maidens, led by Gabriela on 3 different ukuleles, leaving members with tears of laughter on many faces.

Our next meeting will be our annual Beetle Drive and fish and chip supper! More guaranteed laughter and fun! - May 6th Penkridge Methodist Hall at 7.30pm. Visitors and new members are always welcome!

Cannock and District Soroptimists

WELCO MED THE R E TURN O F L E SL E Y SM I T H , T H E CU R ATO R O F T U T BU R Y C A S T LE Over 80 Cannock Soroptimists and their guests welcomed the return of Lesley Smith, the curator of Tutbury Castle who has entertained us many times with her enthralling re-enactments of characters in history. This time she brought to life a woman from more recent times; a true heroine of the Second World War, Peggy Knight. Peggy joined the Special Operations Executive, SOE, in 1944 having been recruited because of her ability to speak fluent French. Although brought up in England she had been born in Paris of an English father and a Polish mother, and both French and English were spoken at home. Peggy had a typical London childhood, which Lesley brought to life brilliantly. She then trained as a shorthand typist before being recruited into the SOE at the age of 24. She was warned that she had only a 50% chance of surviving her mission. After just one month’s training she was parachuted into France, having had only one practice jump instead of the usual six. She was used as a courier by one of the French Resistance groups, had some narrow escapes and was almost captured when hiding in woods for hours with a wounded British airman surrounded by around 700 German troops. She was one of 50 women who were sent overseas by SOE, of which 15 were captured and only 3 came back to England safely. Luckily Peggy was one of

the three. She was awarded medals by the British, French and American governments after the war. She married on her return home, had children and never spoke of her wartime activities. Although her bravery is now largely forgotten, thanks to Lesley Smith’s wonderful talent she was brought to life again as the audience was held spellbound listening to Lesley’s brilliant portrayal of a remarkable brave young woman. The evening was held to raise funds for St Giles’

Phoenix Project, a bereavement service for children and young people, President June Bould’s chosen charity for the year. Thanks to everyone’s generosity the event raised almost £500.00. President June thanked all who had supported the event and made it such a memorable evening.

National Trust Staffordshire Centre

W H AT D O W E D O A N D H O W D I D T H E C E N T R E S TA RT ? In October 1972 a group of National Trust members in Staffordshire got together with the idea of forming a facility for members to get together using their common interest in the National Trust. 200 people attended the Inaugural Meeting in March 1973. Since we were the first such organisation to be set up in Staffordshire we adopted the name ‘National Trust Staffordshire Centre’. Since that time members in other parts of the county have formed their own groups and so the area from which we draw our membership has shrunk somewhat.

12

In order to record the activities of the Centre a Newsletter was first published in the Summer of 1979. This and subsequent Newsletters can be read by looking at our website - www.ntstaffscentre. uwclub.net/Index.htm. The most recent Newsletters also contain the programme of talks, walks and outings as well as reports of the activities. All contributions to the Newsletter are by our own members. The Centre exists to give an extra dimension to National Trust members, but talks and walks are open to anyone living in the Staffordshire area.

Visitors will be encouraged to join us as members. Our Membership Secretary, Joan Jobling (jjobling@uwclub.net) would supply further details of our activities if you wish to contact her.

Mindfulness? YOU FIND IT ALL IN YOGA

Karen Dhada talks about her journey with yoga: Stress relief, flexibility, improved strength and better breathing . . . these are just some of the benefits of yoga The word ‘yoga’ comes from the Sanskrit word ‘yuj’ which means ‘to join’ or ‘to yoke’. It is an ancient art based on the union of body, soul and mind. I’ve practised yoga for 15 years and taught for just over five years. I am trained in the Iyengar method. There are only two of registered Iyengar teachers in Wolverhampton including myself. The Iyengar method appeals to me due to its emphasis on precision, posture and alignment. Its founder, the late BKS Iyengar said: Yoga allows you to discover a sense of wholeness in your life.” So, what brought me to yoga in the first place? My mum used to attend adult education classes after giving birth to me and my twin sister prematurely. She says yoga helped cure her of her crippling back pain. This was back in the mid-1970s when yoga was not considered fashionable. There are so many different schools of yoga on offer and it is probably more popular now in the West than back in India. If you are new to yoga, my advice would be to try a few different classes and see which type works for your body and temperament. For me, yoga is a continuous journey where you evolve with your self-practice.



Personally, as a woman in my forties, it helps me sustain strength, keeps my spine and posture upright, my mind focused and works on a deeper level. The beauty of the Iyengar method is that the use of props makes it accessible for all ages and body conditions. I hope to share my passion for yoga and encourage anyone curious to learn more about this fascinating practice to come along to a class. I currently teaching at Monckton Recreation centre on Thursdays from 7.30pm to 8.45pm. To find out more, email karenbans@hotmail.com or call 07939 551670

Shed and Outbuilding Security

Mark it, lock it and check it. Sheds are popular targets for burglars as they are often overlooked when security is being considered. If you store valuables or tools in them, you should secure these as well! Even if there isn’t anything of value in your shed or garage, burglars can use equipment stored in them such as forks, chisels and screwdrivers, to break into your home. Some simple tips can help make your shed less vulnerable to an opportunist thief: •

Make sure that your shed door, door frame and walls are solid.

Replace any damaged or rotten areas with new sections.

Try to place the shed door facing your house and not too close to a perimeter wall or gate.

Consider keeping valuable items in a strong lockable box or cage.

Fit two closed shackle padlocks on strong padlock hasps - one a third of the way up from the bottom of the door and one a third of the way down from the top of the door.

Fit wire mesh or bars on the inside of your window frames.

Wrap a strong chain around and through the handles of garden tools, lawn mowers, cycles etc and secure the chain to the wall using a padlock or a ground anchor fixed to the base of the shed.

A family run business based in Penkridge and covering Staffordshire, the West Midlands and parts of Shropshire

Consider integrating your shed into your home alarm system, especially if you have valuable items in it. Use door contact sensors and check your glass is secure before installing break glass sensors.

Illuminate the area around your shed using dusk till dawn lighting.

Securing your tools as well as your shed will reduce the risk of theft. It is likely to deter a burglar if items are difficult to move. •

Store tools in a locking metal cabinet; do not use office cabinets as the locks are weak. Use a good quality closed shackle padlock and secure the cabinet to the shed using strong bolts or heavy duty screws.

Secure tools such as spades and garden forks, or lawnmowers and strimmers together with a strong chain and good quality closed shackle padlock.

If you have a solid concrete base, use a motorcycle security rated ground anchor to secure the chain.

If you do not a have concrete floor, secure the chain using a shed anchor.

Mark your power tools and advertise that they are marked.

You can register your power tools and other items for free at www.Immobilise.com

Held this year on 8th June cyclists have the option of the 50 or 100km route, both of which take riders through the stunning Staffordshire and Shropshire countryside. An established ‘must-do’ event in the area, cyclists will start from St Dominics School Brewood and navigate the fully signposted route through beautiful leafy country lanes whilst taking in some challenging (but short) hills and wonderful scenery. There is always a friendly atmosphere as cyclists return back to St Dominic’s for refreshments, music and medals! We are delighted to announce that this year in celebration of our tenth anniversary music will be provided by local star and Britain’s Got Talent finalist, Jean Martyn. Jean will be supporting us and playing

her energetic tunes for a while as cyclists complete their ride and return to Brewood. This fun charity ride continues to fundraise for the 2nd Brewood Scout Group. All the proceeds will go towards renovating the Scout facilities ensuring the next generation can benefit from this fantastic organisation which prepares young people with skills for life. As always – places are in demand! For full event details and to enter online go to: www.brewoodcyclechallenge.com or visit our Facebook and Twitter pages. Are you up for the challenge? the ladies have knit over 70 chicks – and provided the chocolate eggs to go inside. The chicks all have ribbons, eyes and beaks and are extremely cute. They were presented to Cannock Friends of St Giles who arranged to get them to the Hospice for distribution. In the week leading up to Easter anyone using the day Hospice will be given an egg and a chick; on Easter morning in-patients at the Whittington and Walsall sites will have a chick sitting on their breakfast tray. Should there be any remaining they will be available for visitors to the Hospice over Easter.

Patients at St Giles Hospice Whittington and Walsall as well as those accessing the Day Patient Unit at Whittington will hopefully all have a smile put on their faces this Easter thanks to the ‘Knitters of Bella’s Café’ in Hednesford.

Trish Mellor, Cannock Friends of St Giles said: ‘What a wonderful and generous thing these ladies have done! Kindness and care comes in so many ways – and these chicks and eggs are bound to bring a little sunshine into everyone’s life. We are all so grateful to Bella’s Knitters!’

Wendy Yates, a member of Hednesford Lions, came up with the idea of knitted chicks for Easter and took knitting patterns into the café where she asked if anyone would like to knit chicks to cover chocolate Easer Eggs. The answer was a resounding ‘YES’ and

OF CANNOCK Two teams comprising of eight members of Cannock W.I. attended the annual Staffordshire Women’s Institute Centenary Quiz at Stafford County Showground. In all there were 88 teams from W.I.’s across the region; and although Cannock didn’t win, they did hold their heads high with an acceptable score of 70 out of 100. Teams were encouraged to bring a picnic and dress their tables in a purple, green and white Suffragette theme “Celebrating Women” as this is the 100year anniversary of the inception of the Staffordshire Region of W.I.’s Cannock team members had made green felt heart brooches which they wore on the evening and also at their “Show the Love” themed meeting the previous week. The National W.I.

campaign is encouraging women to raise awareness of the impact climate change could have on the environment we love; and to lobby M.P’s to take action on climate change. Cannock members are participating by making small but significant changes in their lifestyles: examples include planting pollen rich flowers to assist bees; turning off lights to reduce energy; growing oak trees from acorns; and recycling. The green heart badges can promote conversations on what we all can do to raise awareness of all we love and do not want to lose to climate change. W.I. meets on the second Thursday of the month at St Luke’s Church Hall Cannock at 10.30am.

It’s Time for a Spring Clean P E N K R I D G E B A N K H O L I D AY M A R K E T S

Penkridge Market are encouraging everyone to have a good ‘Spring Clean’, in time for their two Bank Holiday Markets and Car Boot Sales on Monday the 6th and 27th May. At each event, there will be the opportunity for you to turn all of your unwanted possessions into cash, whilst having a great day out at the same time. The events will run from 9am to 3pm and with free admission and free parking, it’s a great day out for all the family. The Car Boot Sales will give everyone a chance to sell their unused items, from tools and toys, to books and CD’s. The site is hard standing, so there are no muddy fields to contend with, and with a fee of just £10 per car and £15 for a van, you’re bound to make a great profit. There’s no need to book, just simply turn up on the day from 6am. Matt Williams, Manager of Penkridge Market said: “Our Car Boot Sales are always very busy, so it’s the perfect time for people to have a good ‘Spring Clean’ and sell all of those unwanted items. Our hard standing area also means that people can have a great day out, whatever the weather.”

Matt continued: “This could be a great opportunity for parents to encourage their children to tidy their bedrooms and have a good clear out, as well as make some money at the same time. Older children could also get involved as well and see it as a way of making some extra pocket money.” If you would like to attend the events, Penkridge Market is situated in the centre of Penkridge, and is signposted off the A449. It is easily accessible from Junction 12 of the M6 and is only 6 miles from Stafford; 7 miles from Cannock and 10 miles from Wolverhampton (postcode ST19 5AS).

And if you’re struggling to keep the children busy over the Easter Holidays, why not get them to have a good clear out too.

Staffordshire Wildlife Trust is inviting families to get into the party spirit by holding a spectacular birthday celebration event at its Wolseley Centre headquarters.

The county’s largest nature conservation charity celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and is holding a Wildchild Festival on Wednesday 7th August. Wolgarston High School A N N U A L D A N C E F E S T I VA L 2 0 1 9

On Wednesday 10th April, Wolgarston High School held its annual Dance Festival showcasing local student’s talents. Students from local middle schools and dance academies joined forces with Wolgarston High School to host the event. The festival was organised by Mrs Sally Stanton (Head of PE). “It was brilliant to see so many parents, family and friends turn up to show their support for our students,” said Mrs Stanton, “This year’s theme was all about The Greatest Show. Celebrating our eleven years of holding the event.” Students from Penkridge and Brewood Middle, Wolgarston High, Dene Dance School, Sandra’s School of Dance, Revolution Dance Academy and Class One Academy all took the stage as well as sixteen members of Wolgarston’s staff. Mr Greenwood ( Head of Maths) hosted the event, “As always it is a pleasure to host this event, we get to see up and coming talents plus everyone gets to hear my wonderful jokes.” This year all of the schools collaborated in paying homage to the film The Greatest Showman as well as performing

routines to an eclectic mix of iconic artists such as Queen, Jenifer Lopez and Elton John. “As always it was great to see everyone to join forces within the local community and celebrate the talent all of our students have, “said Mrs Stanton, “Every year I am amazed at the outstanding level of performance that has been achieved and then showcased by all of the children and staff. They are amazing and as always have made us so proud. I wonder what next year’s festival theme will be?”

Spring News

FROM ST LEONARD’S FIRST SCHOOL It has been a very busy month for the staff and children. A time for growth and learning! Be it in our school or in the beautiful village church. Reception pupils have enjoyed planting broad beans. They have checked their beans in the mornings to see how they are changing. The children are keeping bean diaries to show the changes over time. They are so excited! We were hoping they would reach the ‘castle in the sky’ and lots of them certainly have! It was linked to our focus text a few weeks ago of Jack and the beanstalk. Years 1 and 2 have been learning about the history of the local area. They visited The Museum of Cannock Chase. They learnt about the 1930s / 40s and what life was like during the war years. The pupils and staff enjoyed dressing up, role playing and learning about the ration years. A super educational visit! There is free entry to displays on coal mining and the WW11 role of the chase forest and heath. We would definitely recommend a visit!

Years 3 and 4 have been learning about Tudor life. They have been reading, writing and painting about this significant historical time. The children made and ate Tudor food. Although the Poor Man’s Gingerbread was not exactly the pupils’ favourite type of food!

May 2019

Our school grounds are currently under development. A member of staff is being trained to become a Forest School leader and we are all excited about learning outdoors. The pupils have designed a totem pole reflecting our school class animals and the much anticipated trim trail will be in place next month. Special thanks to JW Building Maintenance Ltd for helping the children to learn about the machinery used to dig. The young children waited patiently to sit on the digger whilst Wayne, Clive and Brett Bird explained their job roles and how the digger actually worked. Rev Sue is a most valued member of the St Leonard’s family and her church services are fun and much loved. The Mothers’ Day service was very well attended and daffodils were shared to mark the occasion. The week the pupils finished for the holiday was spent in church; with a service for parents and then an amazing Easter Experience for pupils and staff.

We look forward to sharing more St Leonard’s news next month.

Stafford Sleep Out F R I D AY 1 7 T H M AY 2 0 1 9

The Rotary Club of Stafford, in partnership with Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group are delighted to announce a sponsored ‘Sleep Out’ event, which will take place on Friday 17 May 2019 at Stafford College’s town centre campus. Participants will brave the elements for a challenging 12 hour stint, as they bed down to raise awareness of homelessness whilst also raising much needed funds to help prevent it happening in the first place. Gwyn Williams, Chair of the Organising Group said: “This is a new event for Rotary in Stafford and our aim is to support young people to make safer life choices by providing resilience-building education sessions to pupils, their parents and teachers. Mental illness affects people from all walks of life, and we felt that holding a sponsored ‘Sleep Out’ would be a good way of highlighting the issues faced by homeless people. The community-based prevention work delivered by Re-Solv (www.re-solv.org/stafford) and funded by Stafford Borough Council fits extremely well with this sponsorship event”. Stephen Ream, Director of Re-Solv said: “We are so grateful for the support from Rotary which allows us to extend our community prevention work in Stafford Borough and reach more young people and their families. Prevention work at an early age is vital to build resilience and improve long-term outcomes.” The money raised from the ‘Sleep Out’ event will support Re-Solv by allowing them to provide additional resources and prevention sessions to local primary schools, enabling young people to make safer life choices. • £10 raised would pay for resilience-building resources for 10 pupils • £50 would pay for an information and awareness workshop for parents • £100 would pay for a prevention session with a class of 30 pupils. Stafford Rotary Club is very grateful to Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG) for their tremendous support, without which this event would not have been possible. Karen Dobson OBE, Principal and Chief Executive of Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group said: “We are delighted to be supporting the Rotary Club of Stafford and Re-solv by becoming the host venue for the inaugural ‘Stafford Sleep Out’. We hope that the event will bring together people of all ages from across the Borough to highlight the issue of homelessness and raise money to fund community prevention outreach work in local primary schools.”

48

‘Sleep Out’ participants will be welcomed on to the courtyard at Stafford Colleges’ Victoria Square campus at 6pm on Friday 17 May. They will be provided a cardboard mat on arrival and can bring along more cardboard and plastic sheeting to build a shelter for the night, until the 12hour event draws to a close at 6am. Limited places are available so early registration is encouraged – a £10 registration fee, which will be added to donations, will secure a bed space. Participants are encouraged to set a personal target to raise a minimum of £100 in sponsorship, however, it is appreciated that for students this may not be possible, but others may be able to raise more. Once participants are registered, they will be encouraged to set up a fundraising page with Virgin Money Giving at: https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/charity-web/charity/ displayCharityCampaignPage.action?campaignId=8005&ch arityId=100507 More information, registration and off-line sponsorship forms are available at www.staffordrotaryclub.org.uk or from Helen Perren from the Rotary Club of Stafford on telephone number: 07949 079174 or email: helen.perren@btconnect.com Rotary is a global charitable organisation committed to work for others less fortunate. Our moto is - Service above Self. Each individual club is committed to raise funds but also to enjoy one another’s friendship and to socialise. Rotary has worked constantly towards the elimination of polio world wide while also providing much needed equipment and funds for local charities. The Stafford Rotary Club has recently celebrated its 94th year in the town. The club meet every Wednesday lunchtime and new members are most welcome. If you feel you want to put back something into society while making new friends and enjoying fellowship please contact us. Call Gwyn Williams on 07970 447728.

Local Fitness Group Take The Plunge TO RA ISE £1000 FO R LO CA L CH A R I T Y A C HI L D O F M I NE

Sunday 17th March saw a team of 20 crazy individuals from the Stafford based personal training facility, This is Fitness, head to Millers Vale in Derbyshire to abseil off an 80 ft bridge all in the name of charity. Millers Dale is a valley on the River Wye in the popular beauty spot in the Peak District. This is Fitness organised the mammoth abseil for their chosen charity A Child of Mine as one of their many fundraising events throughout the year. The abseil proved a big challenge for many and weather conditions helped make the experience a little more interesting with snow and hail in the mix. Founder and Chief Executive of A Child of Mine, Gayle Routledge, who accepted the challenge and joined the team said: “This was a huge personal challenge for me but one that I am delighted to have conquered. I am so honoured that This Is Fitness have chosen A Child Of Mine to support this year and the money raised will make a big difference to the charity and the work we do. We cannot thank Liam and Hayley enough for all of their continued support towards A Child of Mine.” Owner of This Is Fitness, Liam Brice said: “What a fantastic day. It’s always a great pleasure May 2019

to bring people together for a challenge or activity which is something a little out of the ordinary. From overcoming personal fears to working together as part of a Team the group all got stuck in and tested their comfort zones. We’re thrilled with the amount we raised for the challenge and we can’t thank the abseilers themselves and their friends, families and fellow members for their generosity. Without them the event wouldn’t have been such a success and we wouldn’t have been able to raise such a fantastic amount for A Child of Mine.” The money raised will go towards supporting local families who have lost a child by providing emotional support and access to vital information. The support

A Child of Mine offers increases wellbeing, improves emotional health and provides access to much needed information, guidance and support. A Child of Mine is a registered charity, based in Stafford, supporting

families across the Midlands and UK

and working alongside healthcare

professionals when a child has died. We

work

passionately

to

deliver

services locally for families who have

lost a child at any age or circumstance. A Child of Mine is 100% funded by the general public.
