Spring CLEAN PENKRIDGE MARKET SAY THEY HAVE THE SOLUTION TO KEEPING YOUR CHILDREN BUSY THIS AUTUMN, AS THEY ARE ENCOURAGING CHILDREN TO HAVE A GOOD ‘SPRING CLEAN’ IN TIME FOR THEIR CHILDREN’S MARKET ON THE 30TH SEPTEMBER. Penkridge Market say they have the solution to keeping your children busy this Autumn, as they are encouraging children to have a good ‘Spring clean’ in time for their Children’s Market on the 30th September. The event, which is entirely dedicated to children, will give parents the opportunity to sell all of those preloved toys, clothes and equipment, at an amazing price of just £12 a stall. There will also be plenty of activities to keep the children amused, including a petting farm, donkey rides, fire engine and fun fair. The event will run from 10am to 3pm, and with free admission for children and only £2 for adults, it’s a fantastic value day out for all the family. Kate Kingsley, from Penkridge Market said “This could be a great opportunity for parents to get rid of all those unwanted toys and clothes that children have grown out of, and make some money at the same time. Older children could also get involved and see it as a way of making some extra pocket money.” As the Market owners are only charging £12 per stall for the event and are not taking any commission, it really does give families the potential to make some extra cash.

jewellery and handmade hair accessories. The majority of stalls will be undercover in the indoor market, making it a great day out whatever the weather. There will also be plenty to keep the children entertained, with a petting farm, magic show, fairground rides and Punch and Judy. There will also be a free craft area, where children can create autumn pictures and have a go at making their own puppets to use in the Market’s very own puppet theatre. If you would like to book a stall for the event, then please log onto the website www.penkridgemarket. co.uk and download a booking form or e-mail kate@penkridgemarket.co.uk Penkridge Market is situated in the centre of Penkridge, and is signposted off the A449. It is easily accessible from Junction 12 of the M6 and is only 6 miles from Stafford; 7 miles from Cannock and 10 miles from Wolverhampton (postcode ST19 5AP). For further information please telephone 01785 714221 or log onto the website www. penkridgemarket.co.uk

Kate continued “Having two young children myself I felt there was a real gap in the market for an event that not only catered for the needs of parents but also children themselves. So we thought why not offer something slightly different. People will be able to buy nearly new children’s clothes, toys and equipment, as well as new products such as handmade crafts. There will also be entertainment and local children’s clubs, groups and organisations, so that families can find out more information about the services available in the local area.” Kate is anticipating there will be over 60 stall holders, selling a variety of goods from clothes, toys and books to unique personalised hand-print

ranging from 3-6 months together with a self sufficient Walking Expedition. They chose to do this over Cannock Chase and it lasted 2 days/ 1 night, finishing off with a presentation. The team moved onto to complete their Silver, this was similar however they had to do 1 activity for 3 months and 2 for 6 months, this time they did there Walking Expedition over Long Mynd which comprised of 3 days/2 nights, similarly giving a presentation at the end.

Four 17 year old local lads Dominic Arnold, Sam Bailey, Will Lever and Isaac Goodbody who currently attend Wolgarston 6th Form have just completed their Gold Duke of Edinburgh. Their journey started back in 2014 when they joined Penkridge Explorers currently ran by Lee Adams. The first award they worked towards was their Bronze, each had to complete a skill/physical/volunteering activity

The Gold involved completing two, six month activities and one for twelve months, then individually going on a 5 day residential to somewhere they didn’t know anyone. Finally finishing with their Walking Expedition in the Lake District over 4 days/ 3 nights. The four would like to say a big thank you to all the local people including Lee Adams, the Football Managers and Cub leaders for all their support given to help them to achieve this well earned Award and soon they will all be going to St James’s Palace to receive this.

Penkridge Middle School

I N D O U B L E D U T C H F O O T B A L L D AY PUPILS FROM YEAR 5 AND 6 AT PENKRIDGE MIDDLE SCHOOL ENJOYED A FANTASTIC DAY AT THE BANKS’S STADIUM

A group of pupils from year 5 and 6 at Penkridge Middle School enjoyed a fantastic day at The Banks’s Stadium as they took part in two football matches involving Wolves, Walsall and Dutch giants Ajax on Thursday 19th July. On arrival at the stadium the boys formed a guard of honour for the teams for the first match between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Ajax before going on to act as ball boys for the game. Both clubs had their strongest teams competing with many international stars on show and the boys had a really close view of the action and helped the game, which ended in a 1 - 1 draw thanks to a late penalty from Wolves star Ruben Neves, flow smoothly. After the game the boys got many autographs and were delighted when Wanderers captain Danny Batth came over for a long chat and photos. After a brief break the boys headed to Walsall’s training pitch for a football session organised by the club’s community coaches and they particularly enjoyed trying to replicate some of the skills, shots and saves they had seen in the earlier game! The day’s second game at the stadium saw host team Walsall take on Ajax with the Saddlers looking for their first pre-season win having lost to Aston Villa and

10

Stoke over the last week but having seen the Dutch team in action in the afternoon this looked unlikely. The Penkridge boys again took their places around the pitch as ball boys hoping for lots of touches. The game was just as exciting as the earlier one and against most expectations Walsall put in a superb performance with goals in each half from new signing Andy Cook making it a 2-0 win and topping off a great day for the boys. Whilst many of the children have been ball boys at Walsall’s stadium before and will do so again next season none have ever had the chance to do so against such high calibre teams at Wolves and Ajax and they received the highest commendation from director of community Adam Davy for their fabulous behaviour and enthusiasm on what was an extremely long day. I was proud of all the boys and am looking forward to similar opportunities in the future. One of the pupils, William Preston, had his day cut short after sustaining an injury after training so was unable to take part in the walsall v Ajax game so was rewarded with a signed match ball to make up for his disappointment and bravery.

Strictly Stafford is Back

A R E YO U I N T H E M O O D F O R DA N C I N G ?

KATHARINE HOUSE HOSPICE IS LOOKING FOR INDIVIDUALS OR COUPLES TO LEARN TO DANCE AND PERFORM AT OUR GRAND FINAL ON FRIDAY 23RD NOVEMBER AT THE STAFFORDSHIRE COUNTY SHOWGROUND.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to enjoy 8 x 1 hour lessons with a professional dancer; a full dress rehearsal and a place in our very own Strictly finale with your hair and make-up all taken care of too. Once again the hospice is working with Danny Bell of The Ballroom Company to ensure that the tuition, support and advice the amateur dancers receive will be second to none. Danny Bell said:

Events Fundraiser, Lisa Carson said: “I’m extremely excited to be working on Strictly Stafford with Danny again this year. Last year’s event was incredible and broke all records for the hospice raising a massive £25,000 and so we are hoping to better that again this year. If anyone is even remotely interested in learning to dance I would highly recommend they sign up! Every single person who has taken part previously has absolutely loved it!”

“I take great joy in introducing people to the enjoyment of dancing. It’s wonderful to see people progress and enjoy the physical and mental benefits that dancing has to offer. Add to this the fact that Strictly Stafford brings in valuable funds to keep the hospice toe-tapping along and the whole event is a must in anyone’s calendar.”

Katharine House Hospice provides free care and support for adults and their families who are coping with progressive illness across mid-Staffordshire. It relies upon the kindness of the local community to help generate over 75% of the funds needed to run its vital range of services.

The fee to enter is just £50 per person or £75 per couple and participants commit to raising sponsorship of at least £300 per person or £500 per couple. There are 12 dance places up for grabs. The hospice is now gathering expressions of interest and you have until Thursday, 30th August to put your name in the hat... All you have to do is email your name, address, email address and reason for wanting to take part in Strictly 2018 to fundraising@khhospice.org.uk.

YOUR HEALTH

Late Onset Diabetes Late Onset (or Type 2) diabetes is a serious but controllable disease. There is a strong genetic link and any individual having a parent with the condition is at risk, significantly more so if both parents are sufferers. However, other factors will significantly elevate this risk and even cause diabetes without the genetic factor.

Prevention is, of course, better than cure and if you know that several of the risk factors apply to you, action sooner rather than later can make a difference. Unfortunately ageing is an additional cause so the longer you leave it the greater the possibility of developing problem later on.

Of particular note is that of obesity, with around 55% of patients being obese when diagnosed. A sedentary lifestyle, a poor diet and high blood pressure can increase the likelihood of becoming diabetic.

However if you do develop diabetes, good management of the condition is critical to your longevity and quality of life. Without management the condition can have serious health consequences including heart disease, kidney failure, blindness and a stroke.

The symptoms are common to both early and late onset diabetes but typically appear much more slowly with type 2. Classic symptoms include frequent urination, increased thirst, fatigue and weight loss.

Management, particularly in the early stages, is by eating a healthy diet, increasing exercise and monitoring your blood glucose level. It is only if the condition worsens that you will need to take insulin.

BATTLE OF BRITAIN PARADE WILL MARK 100 YEARS OF THE RAF Residents are being invited to show their support for a Stafford based unit of the Royal Air Force who will be marching through the town centre next month. Members of the Tactical Supply Wing (TSW) will be exercising their Freedom of the Borough by marching through town on Sunday 16 September. The Battle of Britain Commemoration parade will also mark 100 years since the formation of the RAF. The day will include wreath laying at both the borough and county war memorials following a service at the town’s St Mary’s Church. The TSW is based at Beacon Barracks in Stafford and were granted Freedom of the Borough in 2008. Around 60 members of TSW will be joined by 100 RAF cadets accompanied by the Staffordshire Wing RAF Air Cadets Band.

The parade will travel through the town centre and a salute will be taken by the Mayor of Stafford Borough, Councillor Ray Barron, who will be in the Market Square alongside Commanding Officer of TSW, Wing Commander Jamie Miller MBE, and other civic and military leaders. Leader of the Borough Council, Patrick Farrington, said: “Our community has a long established relationship with the military and I know people across the borough hold them in great affection. We appreciate all they do, and have done, in protecting the freedoms that we enjoy today. “So I hope that our residents and visitors will come and demonstrate that tremendous support for TSW as they exercise their Freedom as part of the Battle of Britain Commemorations.” The parade is expected to take place just after 12.30pm on Sunday 16 September.

Penkridge WI R E C E N T U P DAT E S

Since our last report Penkridge WI have been busy! On July 6th our Lunchclub met again at Ye Olde Dun Cow, Colton: a very popular venue which we have visited several times now. Thanks to Sheila Moulton for the initial introduction and for arranging our latest meal. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves – again! Then on July 18th a coach load of members, family and friends set off for Waddesdon Manor (NT) near Aylesbury. Built in the 1870s by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild it is a magnificent country house created purely to display his collection of furniture, porcelain, textiles and contemporary art (to showcase his wealth) and for weekend entertaining. The men’s wing alone had 10 bedrooms which could be sectioned off to deaden the sounds of riotous partying! Outside, the grounds were a delight with plenty of benches in the shade for grateful visitors! Spot the bird was the next diversion! The aviary situated in the grounds held many rare examples – there were many “Ooos!” and “Ahhs!” as the exotic, colourful birds emerged from the foliage. Refreshments followed by shopping (especially in the Wine shop!) completed the day. Many thanks again to Jackie Shaman for organising another successful trip! 26

Back home it was time to call on members for homemade cakes - it was Band Concert time at Haling Dene. Our many supportive members either baked, served, cleared or washed up. The weather was not good but the band was excellent! Tipping into August we had our final event for this report – our regular monthly meeting. Our speaker was Elle Atkins (part-time lecturer while studying for her PhD) on “The Green Infrastructure”. With the use of beautiful slides Elle challenged us to ask questions and consider the meaning and importance of green spaces in the environment. As Ellie guided us through a wide variety of ways to achieve more beneficial surroundings we “visited” a range of planting schemes from wildflower borders to futuristic vertical farms. The benefits of the biodiversity created, the reduction on pollutants and the management of water were made very clear, along with the well-being benefits of better air and relaxation. Members were particularly inspired by the differing methods of green walls could be incorporated into their own gardens. Our next meeting is on September 3rd: 7.30pm Methodist Church Hall. Visitors and new members are always welcome.

Beauty Tips

GUARANTEED GLAM The light covering of tinted moisturiser and sweep of mascara that seemed so effortless yet effective when paired with beach tanned skin, becomes totally redundant when competing with a weather-beaten face.

Sporting ‘swinging sixties’ style, Anna Sui focused all attention on the eyes, with thick black lines of liquid liner and superbly volumised lashes, teamed with nude lips and natural hair.

Although the dark nights take a little getting used to, it’s not all doom and gloom, as this time of year provides the perfect opportunity to expand your make-up bag, commit to a skin care regime and experiment with some brand new beauty looks.

In contrast, Oscar de la Renta chose striking blusher shades, heavily defined brows and a prominent pink pout, with hair swept off the face in a classic ponytail; whilst Donna Karan used autumnal shades of orange, tangerine and rust to create striking eyeshadow hues.

And we’ve certainly seen some exciting trends hitting the catwalk for this season.

But the trend that really seems to stand out is classic Hollywood glamour. Adopted by Diane von Furstenberg the look combines ravishing red lips, flawless foundation, a light smoky eye, curled and subtly mascara’d lashes and, of course, immaculately blow dried hair.

All of the top designers have showcased clothing collections full of sumptuous, indulgent fabrics that epitomise winter chic. But these collections would not have been half as effective if not combined with styled make-up and hair that, of course, is crucial in completing the look. The top make-up trends for this season have been established, so all that’s left is for us to take style inspiration and exchange our usual staid beauty routine for a truly inspired new look.

28

It’s a return to full on glamour that pays homage to a bygone era. The vampish style is undeniably sexy and the vintage edge makes it unquestionably chic. It’s sophisticated, classy, refined and totally feminine. As a high maintenance trend you might think that it’s all a bit too much trouble, but it’s amazing what a difference embracing even just one element can make - it is well worth a try!

REDUCE THE RISK OF CAR THEFT! With the exception of specialist theft for car parts such as catalytic converters, most car theft from motor vehicles is opportunistic. This often involves forced entry to vehicles but it is surprising just how many cars are left unlocked. You can reduce the risks by following some simple advice: Make sure you have locked your vehicle and your windows are closed too, even for short stops. Use your garage or park in well-lit, wellpopulated and overlooked areas. Remove your valuables. Even bags, jackets, cases and toys have a value to a thief. Lock possessions away in your boot, but only if you cannot access the boot from the rear seats and you cannot unlock the boot from a switch in the cabin. Remove loose change from view. Its presence may tip the scales in any decision on whether to attempt to break in. Remove electronics such as dash-cams and sat-navs. You should also remove any holders or chargers and wipe clear suction cup marks. Register expensive in-car systems with #Immobilise.

entertainment

Keep ID badges on your person as they are attractive to fraudsters. Don’t assume your vehicle has locked properly using a key fob lock. Criminals can use devices which block the signal. Always check your doors are locked before leaving your vehicle unattended. #Immobilise – Register your valuables at www.immobilise.com to help reduce property crime and improve the chances of getting them back in the event of loss or theft. 34

Cannock Soroptimists S U M M E R C E L E B R AT I O N

CANNOCK SOROPTIMISTS TOGETHER WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS - 80 IN TOTAL - ENJOYED A WONDERFUL AFTERNOON AT MITTON MANOR, PENKRIDGE, FOR THEIR ANNUAL SUMMER CELEBRATION.

President June Bould wanted somewhere quintessentially English where people could walk, chat, enjoy their surroundings and have a delicious afternoon tea; she was delighted when Elizabeth Gooch MBE, owner of Mitton Manor, agreed that the event could be held there. The gardens are within a 7-acre country garden that was started in 2001 and has been developed from an overgrown wilderness. They are now absolutely beautiful and contain a range of different styles, with formal box and topiary, natural woodland bordered by a stream and wonderful flower gardens with a number of water features and sculptures. The day of the Summer Celebration began with rain the first we have had for weeks - but the day slowly cleared and everyone was able to enjoy the warmth of the sun as they wondered through the gardens before going into the open sided marquee which had been beautifully set up for afternoon tea. The china was ‘just like Grandma’s’, the jugs of flowers on the tables were so pretty and tea - what a fantastic array of finger sandwiches, scotch egg, pork pie, several other savouries, scones with cream and jam and tiny sweet treats with far too many varieties for anyone to sample

36

them all! And the food just kept on coming, along with that truly traditional English drink, a good, hot cup of tea! Add to that the guitarist and singer Dom and all in all it was a perfect afternoon. President June thanked everyone for going along to make the afternoon so successful and happy, in particular she thanked Soroptimist Jill Gooch [no relation to Elizabeth] who had done a lot of the organising for the event. She asked everyone to join her in thanking Elizabeth Gooch who had been so very accommodating and who had made the whole afternoon possible and presented her with flowers from the Club. So many had never been to Mitton Manor Gardens before but will be sure to visit again in future, information can be found on their website www.mittonmanor.co.uk The next Club meeting is on 11th September at The Barns. More information can be found on the website: www.sigbi.org/cannock-and-district; on Facebook: www.facebook.com/SICannock; or on the twitter account @sicannock

Picnic Loaf MEALS IN MINUTES Perfect for outdoor eating, this filling Mediterranean flavoured portable feast makes a change from the usual sandwiches and sausage rolls. SERVES 4

METHOD To serve 4 people, you’ll need a large round, oval or oblong fresh crusty loaf. Slice the top off and scoop out the inside of the loaf, leaving a 1cm (1/2in) thick wall.

Layer the fillings of your choice in the loaf, packing them down well. Drizzle with a little olive oil as you go and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.

Brush the inside wall of the loaf with some good quality olive oil. For extra flavour spread a thin layer of red or green pesto sauce or sun dried tomato paste inside the loaf.

You can make an extra filling layer with the breadcrumbs removed from the loaf by blending them in a food processor for a few seconds with a little olive oil, crushed garlic and fresh basil.

Choose a colourful selection of 3-4 fillings. Cold chicken, smoked ham, salami, cheese, firm sliced tomatoes, roasted vegetables (such as peppers, courgettes or aubergines), baby spinach leaves or fresh herbs like parsley and basil are all ideal. Chopped olives, capers or anchovy fillets will give extra flavour. Avoid watery sliced cucumber and salad leaves as they will make the bread go soggy.

Press the lid on top of the loaf and wrap tightly in foil. Chill in the fridge for 3-4 hrs or overnight. Slice thickly or in wedges to serve.

Top Tip: Keep the kids happy with their own individual versions using small crusty rolls. Fill with layers of mild Cheddar or Edam cheese and wafer thin ham or sliced cold sausages adding a thin layer of pickle or tomato relish. Alternatively, mash a can of drained tuna with some mayonnaise and layer with crisp little gem salad leaves and grated carrot. 46

Cannock and District Ladies Probus Chairman Sheila welcomed our guest speaker Mary Bodfish whose talk “You Can’t Abdicate and Eat It” was a quotation from Wallis, the Duchess of Windsor, making a rather bitter quip about the abdication of the former King Edward VIII and the less than happy results which came of it. The talk explored the backgrounds and personalities the King and the American socialite and divorcée Wallis Simpson, and how the love affair of this middle-aged couple caused a unique constitutional crisis in our history. Their story was continued through their married life, looking at their wartime experiences and the glittering but empty life they pursued until their respective deaths. At the end came one or two surprising twists, when the outcome of their lives was revealed. Meetings are held at The Chase Golf and Country Club on the first Thursday of the month at 12 noon. Guests and prospective new members are welcome. For further information contact membership secretary 07801 370935 and www.probusonline.org
