Penkridge Man Shortlisted F O R TO P AWA R D

Harry Turner, Chair of Dudley and Walsall Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust commented, “We are delighted that Mark has made the shortlist for Chief Executive of the Year. This is testament to the hard work and open culture he has created during his time with us. He is a true ambassador for the NHS and always puts the needs of our staff, patients and carers first. We don’t think this award could go to a more deserving Chief Executive.”

Local Penkridge resident and former pupil of Wolgarston High School, Mark Axcell, who is Chief Executive at Dudley and Walsall Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust has been shortlisted for a prestigious leadership award. Mark, who has worked in the NHS for 26 years, is one of the finalists shortlisted in the Chief Executive of the Year category for this year’s Health Service Journal Awards. With a background in finance, Mark has worked across all sectors in the NHS including mental health, acute and commissioning. Since taking up the post of Chief Executive, Mark has had a significant impact on the Trust. He has driven the Trust towards higher and higher standards of service quality, and brought new services into the Black Country. We’ve also seen a marked improvement in staff satisfaction which has resulted in the Trust consistently receiving top scores in the annual NHS Staff Survey.

4

Mark AxcelI commented, “I am completely overwhelmed and humbled to have been nominated and indeed shortlisted for such a prestigious award especially during a milestone year for the NHS. Throughout my time so far as Chief Executive of Dudley and Walsall Mental Health I have been driven by a desire to not only make a difference to patient care but also to the working lives of our staff, as they are the ones who make the organisation what it is, which is a truly great place to work.” The winner will be announced on 21st November at the awards ceremony in London.

OF PENKRIDGE Although a lovely garden is relaxing and enjoyable – getting it that way can be bad for your health! Slipped discs, twice, from lifting boulders and digging through tons of soil made life far more difficult, not to mention the devastating floods caused by a nearby building site blocking the stream! In 1 year there were 87000 people treated for garden related accidents in the local hospital; mostly sprains and strains but some broken bones and nasty cuts. The cause of most accidents – flower pots! Lifting big heavy clay pots, carrying them so you can’t see where you are going and tripping (probably over the rake!) – causes more injuries than all the others put together! On 6th September our bi-monthly lunch club headed out to The Bell at Haughton. Everyone enjoyed their delicious meals, the scampi and roast of the day being the most popular; the staff are very helpful and friendly making the whole visit a great success. For our meeting on Monday 3rd September there was a competition to bring in “A single flower”. The competition was linked to the topic of the speakers for the evening, entitled “Gardening Mishaps and Disasters!” given by Graham and Judy White, members of the National Garden Scheme and creators of Woodleighton Grove Karibu Garden. Through slides and commentary we were led through the development of their 1/3 acre site from wild and weedy to a spectacular landscaped haven. However, as Graham pointed out, it was not all plain sailing!

There were many positive aspects to all the hard work, not least having 3 very helpful sons with a keen sense of adventure, demonstrated by scaling huge trees to prune massive branches, wielding a pickaxe and painting fencing – although the last job took a little longer than expected as it was not so exciting! Graham’s amusing talk was concluded with a 3 minute video walk through of the finished garden. Well worth a visit! The “single flower” competition was won by Gail Renton; a beautiful rose. The next meeting in the Methodist Church Hall will be on October 1st when we will be looking at coping with our stress levels! New members and visitors are always welcome!

CHILDREN INVITED TO TAKE PART IN COMMUNITY ARTS PROJECT… Kate Kingsley from Penkridge Market said: “We are delighted that the Arts Project are able to attend our Children’s Market on the 30th September. It is such a fantastic idea and we really hope that lots of people will come and get involved. I can’t wait to see the final display at the Methodist Church and think it will be a great attraction for both local people and people visiting the area.” The Children’s Market will run from 10am to 3pm, with free admission for children and £2 for adults.

Penkridge Market near Stafford, would like to invite children to come and take part in the Penkridge Poppies Community Arts Project at their event on Sunday the 30th September. The community project has been set up to mark the 100 year anniversary of Armistice Day, with the aim of creating Penkridge’s own version of the Tower of London display, ‘Fields of Blood’. People are being encouraged to come and get involved in the project and help make the poppies, which will then be arranged down the front of the Methodist Church building and onto the pavement below, in time for Armistice Day in November.

16

The Market will be entirely dedicated to children, with over 70 stall holders expected, selling everything from nearly new children’s clothes to toys and handmade crafts. The majority of stalls will be undercover in the indoor market, making it a great day out whatever the weather. There will also be plenty of activities to keep the children amused, including a petting farm, fire engine, bouncy castle and a fun fair. If you would like to find out more about the community arts project, you can find them on Facebook at ‘Penkridge Poppies’. Penkridge Market is situated in the centre of Penkridge, and is signposted off the A449. It is easily accessible from Junction 12 of the M6 and is only 6 miles from Stafford; 7 miles from Cannock and 10 miles from Wolverhampton (postcode ST19 5AP).

CHINESE FIRE CUPPING Cupping is a traditional Chinese therapy that has been used to treat illnesses and imbalances for over 2,500 years. Modern methods of cupping use mechanical devices to create the suction. APPLICANTS SOUGHT FOR INDEPENDENT SCRUTINY PANEL Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service. ETAP sit as a panel and meet regularly to examine the work of the police and fire. The rigour and scrutiny previously brought by ETAP has received national recognition. Mr Ellis said: ‘Honest and independent scrutiny by the public is crucial as we strive to set the bar higher in policing and fire. This is about being open and transparent so that public confidence improves throughout our services. ETAP has used its wideranging and rigorous powers to scrutinise to make sure decisions made are correct and in the best interests of the public. We’re looking for more members of the public from the north of the county, especially those with financial expertise.’ WOULD you like to help scrutinise and examine policing and the fire service in Staffordshire? Now’s your chance. The Ethics, Transparency and Audit Panel (ETAP) was launched by Matthew Ellis, the Staffordshire Commissioner Police, Fire and Rescue and Crime, with the aim of being the most open, transparent and independent means of scrutinising the county’s police. With policing constantly evolving to reflect societal changes, there remains a need for critical analysis and the need to drive performance. And the forthcoming ETAP schedule will be extended to include scrutiny of fire, after Mr Ellis recently assumed governance of

27

Appointments are made for a minimum of two years with work on ETAP taking up to three days per month. Appropriate remuneration is available for the right candidate. Applicants must be based in Staffordshire or Stoke-onTrent. People across the county are being invited to apply to join the independent panel - with ETAP particularly keen to hear from qualified accountants to help with the scrutiny of public finances.

Cannock & District Ladies Probus

Many members could be seen hurriedly applying their lipstick and combing their hair, following a meal at the Chase Golf Club, in preparation for the camera! Channel 5 had come to Probus to film our speaker Joan Lockley as she gave a talk on the West Midlands Hedgehog Rescue Centre. Joan is known as the “hedgehog lady” as she has looked after some 7,000 hedgehogs and hoglets over the years at her ‘hogspital’/’hosprickle’! She gave an informative presentation with photographs explaining the life of hedgehogs, and how we can help in preserving their habitat which has been so devasted over recent years. Some 36 million hedgehogs have declined to just 1 million with the loss of hedges on agricultural land and gardens, and the use of pesticides and chemicals.

28

A ripple of excitement went through the audience when Joan dipped into a box and bought out ‘Mr Prickle’ a tame hedgehog who calmly took to being passed around and stroked. We are now waiting impatiently for the Channel 5 documentary on animal sanctuaries to be screened to try and pick ourselves out in the background! The next meeting will celebrate the 25th Silver Anniversary on October 4th, 2018. The speaker will be E.K. Gilkes “Odes of Life and Laughter.” Meetings are held at The Chase Golf and Country Club on the first Thursday of the month at 12 noon. Guests and prospective new members are welcome. New Attractions

FOR CHILDREN’S MARKET PENKRIDGE MARKET HAVE ANNOUNCED TODAY THEY HAVE BOOKED SEVERAL NEW ATTRACTIONS FOR THEIR CHILDREN’S MARKET. EVERYTHING FROM A FIRE ENGINE TO INFLATABLE SOFT-PLAY, SAND ART TO DIDDI DANCING, THERE WILL BE SOMETHING THERE TO KEEP ALL AGES ENTERTAINED. Penkridge Market have announced today they have booked several new attractions for their Children’s Market on the 30th September. Everything from a fire engine to inflatable soft-play, sand art to Diddi Dancing, there will be something there to keep all ages entertained. The Market, which will be entirely dedicated to children, will have a host of activities, including a petting farm, fairground rides and children’s crafts. For the more adventurous, there will be an ‘Emergency Services Corner’ with Penkridge Fire Service visiting with a Fire Engine, plus The Penkridge First Responders will be attending with a response car. Roger Dennis will also be bringing his model land rover along and if the children still have lots of energy to burn, there will be a bouncy castle, slide and fun fair. The event will run from 10am to 3pm, and with free admission for children and only £2 for adults, it’s a fantastic day out for all the family. Kate Kingsley, who was the brain child behind the event said: “The Children’s Market has proved so popular, since we started it in April last year, that we now want to keep growing and improving it. We’ve had such positive feedback from both the parents and children that we have decided to hold it twice a year, in April and September. I am really keen to give people what they want and involve them as much as possible, so we have done things such as asking people to vote on our Facebook page as to which children’s characters they would like to see at the event.”

There will be a free craft area, where children can have a go at making their own puppets to use in the Market’s very own puppet theatre. The ‘Farm on Wheels’ will also have lots of animals to meet and rabbits to cuddle. Erica Scriven from Toddler Sense Stafford, will be doing toddler sense demonstrations and there will also be Diddi Dance taster sessions. Over 70 stall holders are expected at the event, selling everything from nearly new children’s clothes to toys and handmade crafts. The majority of stalls will be undercover in the indoor market, making it a great day out whatever the weather. If you would like to attend the event, Penkridge Market is situated in the centre of Penkridge, and is signposted off the A449. It is easily accessible from Junction 12 of the M6 and is only 6 miles from Stafford; 7 miles from Cannock and 10 miles from Wolverhampton (postcode ST19 5AP). For further information please telephone: 01785 714221 or log onto the website: www. penkridgemarket.co.uk

And Kate has certainly thought of everything to keep the children amused. There will be a children’s entertainer on hand to ensure the children are constantly captivated, with magic tricks, balloon modelling and Punch and Judy shows.

USING A MOBILE PHONE WHILST DRIVING It is an offence to use a hand-held mobile phone/ device whilst driving or while stopped with the engine on. New legislation came into force on 1st March 2017 which made significant changes to the penalties faced by motorists who use their mobile phones/devices whilst driving. Under the new legislation offenders will receive six penalty points and a fine of £200. Motorists caught driving using a hand-held mobile phone/device will no longer be offered the opportunity to go on a driver awareness course. Motorists are advised to follow the below dos and don’ts: DO Use a hands free kit for all mobile phone calls. This means you will only need to press a single button either on the steering wheel if it is connected by Bluetooth to the vehicle or on an earpiece and then your hands can remain on the wheel for the most amount of time. Pull over in a safe place and turn your engine off if you need to make a call, consult your phone or make alterations to your Sat-Nav route. It is not safe to try to do any of this whilst driving as it affects your ability to concentrate on the road and endangers those around you. DON’T Use your phone on loud speaker - you will still need to answer the call and handle your phone which means you are not concentrating fully on the road ahead. Have any contact with your phone whilst the engine is running. The safest bet is to leave it in your pocket and deal with any calls or messages when you arrive at your destination. Use your phone whilst stationary in traffic or at traffic lights. Although the vehicle has stopped it is a live environment and you will be expected to keep up with the flow of traffic and remain alert. Using your phone means you are not looking at what is happening around you and may cause disruption or an accident. Visit www.staffordshire.police.uk/article/7099/ FAQs---using-a-mobile-phone-whilst-driving for further information

CAMPAIGN AGAINST WEST MIDLANDS INTERCHANGE

On Friday 21st September members of the ‘Stop the West Midlands Interchange’ Local Action Group met with MP Gavin Williamson to launch their campaign (aptly named, ‘Snub the Hub’) against the proposals which, if accepted, are set to destroy approximately 634 acres of South Staffordshire’s greenbelt in the Parish of Penkridge. Both MPs Gavin Williamson and Jeremy Lefroy are fully supportive of the group’s mission to stop ‘Four Ashes Ltd’ the Londonbased company who are behind these plans from destroying such a vast area of green space. Gavin Williamson went as far as to say that, if this ‘monstrosity’ was accepted, it would be ‘disastrous’ for the local area. The battle started in June 2016 when local people received plans for a Strategic Rail Freight Interchange which proposed to decimate up to 634 acres of greenbelt and, if passed, would include warehouses roughly as tall as Penkridge Church; a link to the railway for freight trains which would be operating 24hours a day and roughly 3000 lorry movements a day. Since then, Parish Councils; MPs and residents of many local areas, as well as local experts, have all been called upon to dissect these plans and ascertain whether or not so much loss to the local environment would really be worth it. Wildlife experts have identified different species of bats as well as other potentially endangered species living here. Members of the farming community have argued that to take so much currently agricultural land would be a huge mistake to our local economy and young farmers. In contrast, 50

Four Ashes Limited argue that rail freight will take vehicle movements off the roads and this is how they are managing to bypass local government from deciding whether to accept the ‘West Midlands Interchange’ in Staffordshire; however on further inspection, their plans seem to contradict this as only four of the warehouses would even be linked to the railway line and they have admitted that they don’t have any takers, as yet, for the rest of the gigantic warehouses. Campaigners have worked tirelessly to rally people together and ensure that local people really do have a say but they have had to wait until now that the plans have made it to the Planning Inspectorate for the public to be able to register and express their views. If you care about your local environment and wish to have your say go to the planning inspectorate website and register before 28th October.

The theme for the Trefoil Guild 75th birthday year is “Celebrate together” so members of Lapley Trefoil Guild celebrated with an evening at Langan’s in Cannock. The room was decked out with bunting and red balloons and afternoon tea was served. After eating their way through delicious sandwiches and scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream members all opted for a ‘takeaway’ of their choice of cakes on offer. Tea and coffee was continuously topped up during the evening. The staff at Langan’s were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble for them.

Quiz sheets were distributed on cake themed questions and there was much fun and laughter as members attempted to answer the questions. The evening culminated with everyone having photographs taken in the Trefoil Guild 75th birthday memory frame. Further meetings include: a talk with the Robin man, games from the past, crafts and a film night. Lapley Trefoil Guild includes members from Penkridge, Lapley, Wheaton Aston, Gnosall, Stafford

MASE 2018 CELEBRITY CHARITY FOOTBALL MATCH

Thanks go to Mid-Counties Co-operative who organised a fundraiser to support the work done by the MASE and four other Charities on the August Bank Holiday. Soap stars from the Jet2 TV Allstars team took to the pitch to raise money for charity – and despite the dreadful weather hundreds of people arrived to show their support. Some of the biggest names from Hollyoaks, Emmerdale and Coronation Street travelled from Manchester to Walsall yesterday to play against a Mid Counties Co-op team at Rushall Olympic FC’s very wet and rainy Dales Lane ground. Hollyoakes’ Nick Pickard and Jacob Roberts, Coronation Street’s Alan Halsall and Andy Whyment, Emmerdale’s Anthony Quinlan and Ryan Giggs’ brother Rhodri were among

56

the names that turned out for the the Jet2 TV Allstars team. Andy Whyment, who has played Kirk Sutherland in Coronation Street since 2003, said: “We always enjoy it whatever the weather. We all love football, I’m not the best player but I enjoy coming out and raising money for charity. “It’s always nice to get a good reception from the crowd too.” Alan Halsall, who plays Tyrone Dobbs in Coronation Street, said: “It’s typical, we’ve had such a great summer and then we get this weather. But it’s still been a great day supporting the local charities and a lot of people have turned out which is great to see”. Giggs scored the winning goal in a 2-1 victory for the stars.

Pumpkin crop doubles TO M E E T D E M A N D F O R P YO

CANALSIDE FARM, NEAR STAFFORD HAVE ANNOUNCED TODAY THAT THEY HAVE PLANTED DOUBLE THE AMOUNT OF PUMPKIN PLANTS THIS YEAR, IN ORDER TO COPE WITH DEMAND.

Canalside Farm, near Stafford have announced today that they have planted double the amount of pumpkin plants this year, in order to cope with demand. After the huge success of their first ever pumpkin crop last year, and their ‘pick your own’ pumpkin event last October, they have decided to plant twice as many this year. The farm’s ‘pick and carve pumpkin workshops’ sold out almost immediately last year and even when the Farm added additional dates, they sold out too. This year the Farm are hoping to open the ‘Pumpkin Patch’ from the 27th October and throughout the whole of the half-term school holidays, until the 4th November. Owner Chris Barton said: “We were delighted by the reaction we had last year, especially as it was our first ever pumpkin crop. This year has presented us with some new challenges with this extreme heat, but we have installed a special irrigation system and the pumpkins are doing really well. We’re hoping that by planting twice as many, we will have enough to run the PYO for much longer this year.” 62

The ‘Pumpkin Patch’ will allow children to see first-hand how this spectacular fruit grows (yes pumpkins are a fruit not a vegetable!). They will be able to select their own pumpkin from Canalside’s pumpkin patch and carve it into a Halloween lantern. They will be given the flesh and seeds from inside the pumpkin to take home, along with recipes and tips on how to ‘grow your own’. Chris continued: “We are hoping that the children will leave inspired to cook more tasty pumpkin dishes back home, as well as growing their own with the seeds they’ve collected.” If you would like to visit, the Farm, Shop and Café are open every day from 9am to 5pm and are located in Great Haywood, just 6 miles outside Stafford. The Farm is situated just off the A51, between Stone and Rugeley or can be accessed via the A518 from Stafford, turning right to Great Haywood (postcode ST18 0RQ).
