Wolgarston High School
MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING a tray of deluxe double chocolate brownies garnished with white chocolate stars, Mrs Dodd ‘s entry was vanilla cupcakes with a selection of different flavoured icing all decorated in chocolate sporting motifs, whilst Mrs Jones chose a Victoria sponge cake covered in white chocolate butter cream icing decorated with white chocolate buttons. “I took my role very seriously as instructed by Mrs Beach to find our very own Star Baker at Wolgarston,” said Mrs Tracey, “After much consideration and sampling of the cakes I hereby declare that this Year’s Star Baker award goes to Mrs Jones.”
Wolgarston High School took part in its annual MacMillan coffee morning fundraiser event. This year our students and staff showed their support by hosting a coffee morning in the library. On Friday 28th September Our Library and Sixth Form Centre sold a selection of homemade and store bought Fairtrade cupcakes and cookies. The pop up shops were open at break time and at lunch time. Flavours ranged from Morello cherry and dark chocolate to red velvet. “It is brilliant to be part of this event and as always we could not done it without the help of Mrs Beach and her Year 9 students. This year they made some amazing cookies,” said Miss Roberts (Learning Resources Centre Administrator), “The amount of support we received was amazing, in total we sold over 250 cakes and cookies. For the first time this year we held our own Wolgarston Bake Off., which was brilliant.” Mrs Tracey ( Science and Technology Technician) had the responsibility of judging the staff competition. Mrs Dodd (House Leader of Himalayas and Teacher of PE), Mr Skinner (House Leader of Pyrenees and Teacher of PE) and Mrs Jones (House Leader of Rockies and Teacher of Science) all took time out to bake at home. Mrs Tracey had no idea who had baked what cake. Mr Skinner chose to create

Student helpers on the day were Shannon Muggleton (Year 12), Tia Selvey (Year 12), Erin Simm (Year 12), Andy Speke (Year 12), Lily McNally (Year 11), Rylan Spencer (Year 11), Jasmine Clarke (Year 11) , Bethan Hughes (Year 11) and Rachel Rollinson (Year 9). “The cookies and cakes looked amazing,” said Lily McNally (Year 11), “The double chocolate cake was delicious.” “We would like to thank our Year 9 Food Technology students who decided to make a variety of cookies for the Macmillan Charity in their lesson on Thursday this week,” said Mrs Beach (Teacher of Design and Technology)., “Their hard work has helped us make a positive difference to such a worthwhile cause.” Students and staff at Wolgarston High School are dedicated to supporting cancer research and support. “Together we have made a great contribution this week as a school. I cannot believe how much money we have raised and to have beaten last year’s record total is amazing,,” said Mr Skinner, “I am determined to win the Star Baker award next year.” A huge thank you to Erin Simm (Year 12) for taking photographs of during our event. With staff and student support Wolgarston High School raised £280.00.

Working with the Resuscitation Council and other partners, St John Ambulance aims to give more than 200,000 the ability to help someone who has gone into cardiac arrest. While Restart a Heart Day is on Tuesday October 16, the first aid charity’s highly trained volunteers are arranging demos between 9 and 23 October, to give people more opportunities to attend. Local events include: Sedgley Upper Gornal Methodist Church - Sat Oct 6 -10am to 2pm Cannock – Longford Centre – Tue Oct 9 - 6-9.30pm Halesowen – St John Ambulance HQ – Tuesday October 9-7pm, Saturday October 13, from 9am-11am
Each hour-long session is free to attend and includes practical information on how to give cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and deliver shocks to the heart with a defibrillator. Currently, only one in 10 people in the UK survives a cardiac arrest out of hospital; St John Ambulance and its Restart a Heart partners want to change that. Chances of survival double when someone gives immediate CPR and significantly increases further when a defibrillator is used. St John Ambulance’s District Manager Greg McKeown said: “A cardiac arrest can happen any time and without warning so we’re looking forward to sharing knowledge of first aid techniques so that more people can step forward when confronted with a heart-related emergency, making communities safer. To join the conversation on social media, search for #RestartaHeart and to find out more about the campaign, including a full list of demos visit www.sja.org.uk/restartaheart

OF PENKRIDGE us getting bored and lethargic, however, we are not all the same resulting in a wide range of triggers and responses. Jan gave the analogy of a packet of elastic bands: some stretch more than others but all have a breaking point. We learnt that there are 3 ways that too much stress can affect us and she gave us a few examples – physical ( pounding heart, sweaty palms or a rash), emotional (bursting into tears, anger or mood swings) and behaviour (not eating or overeating, making mistakes, losing confidence) many of which members clearly recognised. By now we could all have been getting “worried” about our own stress levels but thankfully Jan then went on to tell us about stress busters!
“Reducing Stress” was the title of Jan Mitchell’s talk to our members on October 1st. It was particularly topical as this year’s NFWI resolution revolves around Mental Health issues in its many guises. Jan has worked for many years in the health sector, supporting individuals and giving talks in health centres, hospitals and clinics. Jan began by questioning the group if anyone needed stress in their lives? It is in fact essential to have challenges and problems to tackle if we are to help our mental fitness. Stress is a fact of life and stops
In the days of cavemen we had fight or flight but in more recent times we do not always have these as reasonable options, so it is firstly very important to recognise the symptoms for ourselves and those around us before it gets too overwhelming and we snap! Not surprisingly, talking and sharing the problem can be a first step. Writing things down in a diary or letter to yourself can help to put worries in order or seem more manageable especially if stress is keeping you awake at night. Saying “No!” firmly but politely to that last straw could well save the camel’s back. The underlying message is to take control, so we all practised deep breathing to end in a calm and relaxed frame of mind. This was swiftly followed by a lovely cup of tea and a biscuit. Magic!

R E C E I V E A N I L L U M I N AT I N G TA L K O N WOODBINE WILLIE Andrew’s Church, Rugby and then, in 1914, the vicar of St Paul’s, Worcester. He volunteered as a chaplain on the Western front in WW1 and earned the nickname “Woodbine Willie” for giving Woodbine cigarettes along with spiritual aid to soldiers on their way to the front and to injured and dying soldiers. He served in the trenches firstly at the Battle of the Somme and then at Messines Ridge where he won the Military Cross for his reckless courage, running into No Man's Land to deliver morphine to the dying and the wounded.
At a recent meeting the club received a really illuminating talk by David Gethin on the life of Rev Geoffrey Studdert Kennedy. Born in Leeds in 1883, he was the 7th of nine children born to Jeanette Anketell and William Studdert Kennedy, vicar of St Mary’s, Quarry Hill in Leeds. Educated at Leeds Grammar School and Trinity College Dublin, he gained a degree in classics and divinity. After a year’s training at Ripon Clergy College, he became a curate at St 16
A deep and real compassion for his fellow men drove him relentlessly both on the battlefields of the trenches and then in the slums for which he was highly respected. He made a mission of living alongside the disadvantaged of British society. He was a charismatic preacher, and brilliant writer and poet. When he died in 1929, at the age of only 46, King George V sent a telegram of condolence to his family; ex-servicemen sent a wreath with a packet of Woodbines at the centre; 100 unemployed men marched from the Labour Exchange to Worcester Cathedral to pay their respects; 1,700 people filed past his coffin in a single day as it lay in a Liverpool church. He is remembered each year in the Church of England liturgical calendar on 8th March, the anniversary of his death. Cannock & District Men’s Probus meets bi-weekly on a Monday. boost of T.L.C when a team of 13 helpers from the company ‘AMEY’ came for the day recently. This Community Day was organised with the help of Mr Corcoran. The strapping helpers from AMEY got the paintbrushes out and painted the EYFS fencing and playhouse. This has made the area look fresher and more inviting. In addition, the pathway around the pond area was re-laid and freshened up dramatically, along with the pathways around the allotment. It was a busy day and a lot was achieved. The school would like to thank Amey for their time and hard work. The children love the revitalised areas. It’s been an exciting time at Church Eaton Primary School in recent weeks with development and maintenance of the school’s grounds. New fitness/ play equipment (complete with fake palm trees!) has been installed in the main playgroundfunded by a grant from the National Lottery. The children were thrilled with the new addition to their playground and are having fun utilizing it already.
Church Eaton Primary School is classed as ‘GOOD’ by OFSTED. Nursery places are available at this nurturing, rural school where pupils thrive in a caring environment with strong family values. The school offers the option of wrap-around care for Nursery pupils. There is also a before and after school club on-site which is invaluable for working parents.

Cannock and Stafford Soroptimists W E L C O M E PAT R I C I A G AT H E R U M T O C E L E B R AT E T H E I R I N T E R N AT I O N A L E V E N I N G
Women have been taught how to use energy efficient stoves to reduce the number of trees being cut down and forty water tanks have been provided to collect as much precious water as possible. Women collect water from the tanks in a morning, boil it and then allow it to cool so they now have safe drinking water and surplus water can be used to irrigate the gardens.
Cannock and Stafford Soroptimists and their guests were delighted on 9th October to welcome Patricia Gatherum to celebrate their International Evening. Patricia had travelled from Newcastle-Upon-Tyne to be with them. She is the coordinator for the project that Soroptimist International of Great Britain and Ireland (SIGBI) have been supporting for the last three years in the Meru district of Kenya and had recently returned from a study tour, so was able to tell everyone at firsthand how the project was progressing. Working with the charity child.org and a local charity called CIFORD the project set out to provide seeds, tools and encouragement to enable women in that impoverished rural area of Kenya to create gardens to support themselves and their families and to provide surplus food to sell in their local market. This has been very successful and recently the project has expanded.
What began as nutritional training has now been expanded to also provide advice to prevent girls being drawn into forced marriage, female genital mutilation and to encourage AIDS prevention. It is hoped to expand this very shortly to run a similar course for boys in the villages. Soroptimist International of Great Britain and Ireland has so far raised over £127,000 for this work and the project has been extended until October next year. It is hoped that the sum raised by then will easily exceed the original £150,000. At the end of a fascinating talk President June was delighted to be able to present Patricia with a cheque for £500 which Cannock Soroptimists raised from their Open Gardens weekend in the summer.

Final Show Apartments Released A D L I N G T O N L U X U R Y A PA R T M E N T S
Peace of mind for you and your family If you or a loved one are finding it more difficult to manage at home, an Adlington apartment could meet your every need. Ideally located close to Stafford town centre, Brooklands House, a thriving new luxury retirement development, offers a safe and secure environment designed specifically for later living, with 24-hour on-site care and support, should it be needed. Now with limited availability and attractive offers on the final phase of apartments, we invite you to view our beautifully furnished show apartments for a taste of life at Brooklands House. Care and support if you ever need it Specialist retirement developments are still a relatively new offering in the UK and at Adlington, we understand that some homeowners may need care and assistance, which is why we work with MHA (Methodist Homes) to deliver bespoke support and optional care. Homeowners have access to round the clock help from a dedicated team of care professionals, whatever their needs, with 24-hour on-site staff to offer tailored assistance that enables our homeowners to maintain their quality of life. The care and support offered is completely flexible, so should requirements change in the future, the discreet care team can accommodate this too.

Cut down on energy bills and maintenance costs As the cold winter months set in many people often spend large amounts of money heating rooms that are unused, or struggle to maintain outside space and end up paying dearly for it. Brooklands House is built with energy efficiency and sustainability in mind, and as energy bills are touted as the biggest expense when taking care of a larger home, money could be saved by downsizing, especially if moving from an older property. Not only that, but at Brooklands House homeowners can enjoy a delicious three-course lunchtime meal from just ÂŁ3 in the table service restaurant and take a stroll in the beautifully landscaped gardens, without having to maintain them. Final phase of show apartments Due to exceptional demand the final phase of show apartments has just been released for sale with a bundle of attractive offers available on the final few. For reservations taken before 30th November 2018, homeowners can benefit from a choice of six months complimentary service and well-being charges, a comprehensive move in package, or a selection of brand-new furniture in your chosen apartment at no extra cost. Please call 01785 249 175 to find out more or visit: www.adlington.co.uk.

D O N AT E T O S TA F F O R D S H I R E W O M E N ' S A I D the plea, most of us have had hard times in the past and may do in the future so to help people in dire need if you can is only right. As the need was great we only collected for two weeks at the meetings so we could get the food to Staffordshire Women’s Aid. They do such a great job locally and unfortunately one of the bigger grants they have relied on in the past has been given elsewhere recently, so they really need the local support to help fund the fantastic job they do. I was very proud that the Tuesday Mixers rallied around and brought in what they could. Karen Salt one of the fundraisers for SWA came and collected all the goods to distribute where needed”
On hearing of the appeal on social media for food from Staffordshire Women’s Aid, the Over 55s Tuesday Mixer Club jumped in to help and over two weeks collected nearly 200 dry and tinned food to donate to the charity Lorraine Conkey founder of the community group said “When I saw the appeal for food I couldn’t just ignore

Katharine House Winter Walk H O S P I C E S E E K S S U P P O R T E R S F O R A F E S T I V E WA L K
Katharine House Hospice is looking for supporters to enjoy a festive Winter Walk on Sunday 2 December. Their seasonal stroll will see experienced walkers, families and their dogs enjoying a fresh and festive 4 mile circuit of picturesque Cannock Chase to help raise vital funds. Events Fundraiser, Lisa Carson, said: “Our Winter Walk is a great pre-Sunday lunch outing for all the family and a wonderful way to make the season about caring for others as well as meeting Santa...all children will be given a goody bag from him and there’s a hot drink for everyone after the walk.”
Christmas morning and he will have a treat for younger walkers. As it is people’s sponsorship that really makes a difference, a prize will be awarded to the child (under 16) who brings the most sponsor money to the event before the walk commences! Walkers can register now online at www. wewalktogether.co.uk or by calling 01785 270808.
Adults can pre-book for just £10 before 1 November, it’s £12.50 thereafter until midday 30 November or pay £20 on the day. Kids walk free. Santa will be there to take his orders for
