Rodbaston Animal Zone’s ‘Spring Festival’ is a roaring success Rodbaston Animal Zone are celebrating this week following the success of last weekend’s Spring Festival. The event, which took place on 16th and 17th April, saw over 1000 visitors attend to enjoy a range of family friendly activities including bottle feeding the spring lambs, tractor trailer rides, showjumping and sheep shearing displays plus much more. Visitors had the chance to enjoy ‘Animal Encounters’ and find out more about their favourite animals as staff were on hand to deliver ‘meet the keeper’ sessions throughout the day. Volunteers from the World Owl Trust, who work in partnership with the Animal Zone at the on-site owl breeding and education centre, were also on hand to deliver talks about some of the world’s most endangered species and give guests the chance to stroke and hold the birds. For those who wanted to interact with and feed the animals, bookings were taken for the popular meerkat and lemur experiences. One of the highlights from the weekend came in the form of the spring lambs. Armed with bottles of milk, the faces of children (and adults alike) lit up as South Staffordshire College’s very own Farmer Giles introduced some of the newest additions to the flock. Guests who visited the on-site Equestrian Centre also enjoyed opportunities to groom the ponies and watch farrier displays, while those who were feeling brave could slither into the reptile house to meet the Animal Zone’s collection of snakes, spiders and lizards. In the days since the event, positive feedback from visitors has been flooding in via email, social media and via Trip Advisor with comments including “This place is such good value and has a lovely relaxed atmosphere” and “We had a brilliant day out. Every one of us had a great time, it was a genuinely lovely day out for children, adults and grandparents alike. The Animal Zone is great value for money and on the journey home we were already discussing when we can come back for a return visit.” Guests were also full of praise for the hardworking staff and Trip Advisor reviews included a range of positive comments including “Staff were very friendly and helpful” and “the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable.”

4

Staff at the Animal Zone are understandably thrilled that guests enjoyed the event so much and Animal Collection Manager John Buchan says “We’re really pleased with how well the Spring Festival went this weekend and are proud that we’ve managed to deliver such an enjoyable family experience. The positive feedback from our guests is the icing on the cake and is a real boost for our staff who work tirelessly to take such good care of our animals and provide visitors with a day out to remember. We’re looking forward to welcoming people back to visit us again!” The Animal Zone is home to over 750 animals, from Marmosets to Meerkats, Lemurs to Lizards. Open weekends and School Holidays from 10am - 4pm, tickets are priced at just £5.20 per adult and £4.20 per child. Family tickets (2 adults and 2 children) are also available for just £16. Under 3’s can visit the Animal Zone at no charge. Meerkat and Lemur experiences must be pre-booked and cost £30 per person. Sessions can be pre-booked by emailing john.buchan@southstaffs.ac.uk Staff and animals from the Animal Zone will also be attending a forthcoming Charity Fundraising ‘Family Fun Day’ at Norton Canes Community Centre. The event, which will be held on Sunday 29th May from 1pm-6pm, promises to be a fun-filled day that will be raising funds for the Alzheimers Society. For more information call: 01785 710560 or visit, www.southstaffs.ac.uk/animal-zone Keep up to date with the latest news from the Animal Zone via Social Media. Facebook: Rodbaston Animal Zone.

Tae Kwon Do Club’s Latest Success is a Real “Belter” Newport and Penkridge Tae Kwon Do is celebrating after recently seeing its first student progress to black belt status. Connor Heath who trains at the Penkridge club travelled all the way to the Tae Kwon Do Association of Great Britain’s (TAGB) headquarters in Bristol on April 23rd and along with over 600 other students, to take his black belt grading that weekend. A black belt grading is the culmination of a minimum of three and a half years of training and the ability to attain and demonstrate a very high standard of the Martial Art. Connor who is just 12 years old was one of the first students to start training at NPTKD, and over the past 6 months in the run up to his grading, has been the very definition of focus and determination. All his hard work eventually paid off as one report from a World Master of Tae Kwon Do that sat on the grading panel said that Connor absolutely “smashed it”! Connor is now a 1st Dan black belt and it took him no time at all to start training for his 2nd Dan. His instructor said that “Connor is a very attentive student, and has coped with the demands of training for such a big day incredibly

well. He is very worthy of the title of the first home grown Newport and Penkridge Tae Kwon Do black belt.” If you would like any more information about Newport and Penkridge Tae Kwon Do you can get in contact with instructor Dan Moffat on 07783690276 or dan@nptkd.co.uk

Soroptimist International Cannock and District Pre-owned Bras are needed! SI Cannock is continuing to work with the Purple Teardrop campaign to support women victims of trafficking. When trafficked women have been rescued it is vital to enable them to start to earn a living and secure their place within the community and also minimise the risk of their being trafficked again. Soroptimists, through Purple Teardrop, are working to help women and girls in Mozambique, Uganda and El Salvador to start businesses selling used bras - bras are seen as a status symbol and sell for a good price in these countries.

(Left-Right) Soroptimists Sue Cartlidge, Val Jones, June Bould, Carole Holdcroft [President SI Cannock & District] & Kate Young

On Saturday July 2nd members of SI Cannock will be present at St Luke’s Church Fayre and will be accepting any donations of bras - which need to be in a reasonable and clean condition - to send on to help the women victims of trafficking start a new life. The collection point will be available on the lawn in front of the church between 10.am and 3.00pm. The stand will also be a collection point for toiletries to be donated to the refuge for women victims of domestic violence run by the Pathway Project. Shampoo, soap, toothpaste, female hygiene items - any of the basic essentials which women need. Women often leave an abusive relationship taking absolutely nothing with them. Soroptimists provide toiletries and other items which can be given to the women when they first enter the Refuge so that they can have some dignity. SI Cannock will be very grateful for any donations of toiletries and bras which will then enable women in need to begin to rebuild their lives. Should you have items to donate but not be able to go to St Luke’s on 2nd July, please contact si.cannock@outlook.com or phone 07971 494510 to arrange collection.

Local couple raise funds for Stoke Neonatal Unit and Liverpool Women’s Neonatal Unit A local couple, Richard & Diana Evans, are raising funds for Stoke Neonatal Unit and

Liverpool Women’s Neonatal

Unit who played a large role in making sure their twin boys,

David and Zac, are here with them today.

The boys were born prematurely, David weighing 2lb 5oz and Zac just 1lb 15oz. Both boys were taken straight to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and were put onto ventilators to help them breathe. Zac did incredibly well, a miracle baby really, not suffering any infections along the way, just a few minor drawbacks, one blood transfusion, and then he had a normal journey through neonatal, with his feeds being increased gradually and oxygen being decreased over time. He still spent about 8 weeks on oxygen but came home after 2½ months at Stoke. David on the other hand was not so lucky and had a tough fight from the very beginning and his neonatal journey was to be extremely stormy. He struggled to get off the ventilator for the first couple of weeks, and then he had infection after infection, having to

The children had to follow instructions and listen to a video from the international space station from Tim Peake. The children were to become space biologists and plant 200 seeds 100 which have been in space and 100 that have been on earth. The children have to water and look after the rocket plants for 35 days checking in their results at day 10 and 17. The silver capsule set the children certain activities throughout the day linking to the space seeds. This involved researching space facts from Tim Peake, making their own mission ID and reading space stories.

Silver Anniversary Celebrations for Local Family Business Its an exciting time for local business Kitchen Care this year as they celebrate their silver anniversary! The company is based on Ladfordfields industrial estate near Seighford. And first opened its showroom doors 25 years ago. Since then, the company has gone from strength to strength, but has always ensured it stays part of the local community by supporting local charities and sponsorship of local sports clubs. With three generations of the family working in Kitchen Care, customers are guaranteed that personal service, experience and customer care that comes from using a long established family business. Jo Burslem from Kitchen Care says, ‘’We like to think of ourselves as a one stop shop for all your new fitted kitchen and bedroom needs, we can take on projects of any size or nature and we are very individual and approachable as a company”. She goes on to say, “By dealing with customers on a personal level we are able to build a relationship with them, and really get to know what they require from their kitchen or bedroom. This enables us to produce designs and ideas that are truly bespoke and individual to that customer and their home. We offer a computer assisted planning and design service, that produces lifelike pictures of your prospective kitchen or bedroom, giving you a helpful insight into how good your new

project could look.’’ No project is too big or too small and they can help you with all aspects of the project from building work, tiling, electrics, flooring, under floor heating and lighting. The extensive showroom with easy free parking displays many different styles of kitchen to give customers ideas and inspiration. From solid wood painted in-frame kitchens available in hundreds of colours for that country farmhouse look, right through to sleek glossy handleless designs. Kitchen Care is also a specialist Siemens appliance design studio, displaying lots of the latest Siemens models. All the appliances are connected, allowing accredited staff to demonstrate them and also enabling customers to be hands on and to really get to grips with how the appliances work. Kitchen Care are happy to offer a free, no pressure, no obligation quote and design service. Jo added, “Many customers return to us as repeat customers time after time when they move home, I feel they are reassured by having a long established local company to buy from, rather than a faceless impersonal organisation. Customer service is a very important part of Kitchen Care and one of the reasons why 25 years on we are still going strong.”

Penkridge Laughter Club Laughter Yoga was created in 1995 by a Mumbai doctor after he studied scientific research into the therapeutic benefits of laughter. However, unless you saw the Beeb’s “Real Exotic Marigold Hotel” or the highlights covered in “Gogglebox” earlier this year, you’d be forgiven for not being familiar with it. With a title like “Laughter Yoga” it would be easy to think it involves postures or balancing on one leg while laughing but actually it combines simple laughter exercises with yogic breathing. Despite Laughter Clubs being around for over 20 years, it still largely unheard of in the UK. The good news is that there is now a regular Laughter Club in Penkridge. Sal Robinson first experienced Laughter Yoga in 2014 and, after finding there were no local Laughter Clubs, qualified as a Laughter Yoga Teacher last year. The saying “Laughter is the best medicine” is not just an expression, there is extensive research

which shows the physiological and psychological benefits. To gain these benefits we need to laugh for a sustained period of 10-15 minutes (on average a person laughs for 3-5 seconds each time). The Penkridge Laughter Club encourages people to be more playful, have more fun and LAUGH!

NHS Breast Screening in East Staffordshire The NHS Breast Screening Programme screens around 1.6 million women a year. Women who are aged 50 to 70, who are registered with a South Staffordshire GP, are automatically invited for screening every three years, when their GP practice is being selected for screening. Women over the age of 70 are still eligible to be screened and can arrange this by contacting the South Staffordshire Breast Screening Service on 01785 886777. Breast screening saves lives Over 19 million women have had breast screening in the UK since the Breast Screening Programme was set up in 1988. In this time, it has found more than 117,000 cancers, at an earlier stage, usually before a lady has symptoms. The aim of screening is to find breast cancer at an early stage, when any changes in the breast would be too small to feel and when there is a good chance of successful treatment and full recovery. What happens at the screening unit? Screening is carried out by female staff, who take

mammograms (breast x-ray) to detect abnormalities. The breasts are x-rayed one at a time. The breast is placed on the x-ray machine and gently but firmly compressed with a clear plate. Two x-rays are taken of each breast at different angles. Most women find the compression uncomfortable and occasionally it may be painful. However, the compression is necessary to ensure high quality mammograms. Any discomfort will be over with quickly. The results of the mammogram will be sent to the lady and her GP within 2-3weeks. About 4 women in every 100 will be called back for further assessment. Out of these 4 women, 1 will be found to have cancer. The rest will not have cancer and will go back to having screening invitations every 3 years. Ladies can find out more information about local screening by visiting our Facebook page ‘South Staffordshire Breast Screening Service’ www.facebook.com/SouthStaffordshireBreastScreeningService or the website, www.bscreen.org.uk/southstaffordshire

Hay-Making Festival Saturday 25th June 2016 Did you know that on the western fringes of the village of Wheaton Aston is a rare and wonderful survival from medieval times? It is so special that it is protected by national law as a National Nature Reserve (NNR) and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and warrants European protection as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC). The site comprises a series of nationally RARE lowland floodland meadows - 95% of which have disappeared, so you can see this is indeed a special place.

Its’ main claim to fame is that it is the most northerly habitat for the rare and beautiful SNAKESHEAD FRITILLARY. You may have them growing in your garden but it’s so special and fabulous to see them in the wild. ‘COUNTRYFILE’ viewers will have seen Emma Rothero, of the Floodplain Meadows Partnership on the 15th May at the Great North Meadow at Cricklade where somewhere round a MILLION fritillaries grow - this is a major habitat, also cared for by Natural England .The Mottey Meadows are smaller and more compact but definitely equally stunning and Emma and her colleagues are also very much involved in the life and management of our meadows. This years’ fritillaries have died off now and the annual guided walks have taken place, but on 25th JUNE you will have the chance to see the meadows at their most SPECTACULAR. This is because as the fritillaries fade, the 250 varieties of traditional meadow plants and flowers take over. At first there are the ladysmocks and marsh marigolds, but these eventually recede amonst the taller growth that will become the summer haycrop. By mid-June, the meadows reveal their full glory - tall and deep crimson burnet, ragged robin, knapweed and all the other traditional hay meadow varieties - a rare and wonderful survival. The hay crop that follows is still prized as it has been for hundreds of years. Horses were the main method of transport and hay was their ‘petrol’ and Wheaton Aston sweet tasting hay was famous and much in demand(it still is!!). On 25th JUNE, we will be holding our annual HAYMAKING FESTIVAL on Weate’s meadow (12pm-4:30pm). Entry is free and you can park at St Mary’s School, where you can take a free tractor ride from the school or of course you can walk (follow the arrows!). You will have the opportunity to take part in guided walks through the meadows with Natural England’s senior

June 2016

reserves manager, Adam Dempsey and Tim Cowlishaw. The walks are £3 per adult, children free, but free all together, if you take out membership of the FRIENDS OF THE MOTTEY MEADOWS (SEE BELOW). As well as the walks in the meadows we have numerous other goodies on offer which this year include wildlife displays (bats, hedgehog rescue, Staffs Wildlife Trust) birds of prey, ferret racing, scything displays, metal detector finds, coconut shy, Punch and Judy, sensory trail, face painting, raffle, delicious home-made cakes and other refreshments, strawberries and cream, ice cream van, Mr Sizzle burgers etc. All in all not to be missed! Friends of the Mottey Meadows The group was formed 8 years ago to help Natural England raise awareness of this special place - not only in Wheaton Aston but the wider area. To repeat, this is a FRAGILE and SPECIAL place, recognised nationally and internationally as a rare and precious survivor from a bygone time. Membership is £5 per person and £10 per family annually. On joining you will receive a badge, newsletters, visits to other reserves such as Aquala te(Shropshire) and Chartley Moss. We have planned a guided visit to the Stiperstones reserve, Autumn quiz and Christmas meal. If you need further information on anything discussed in this article, please contact any of the following:Wes Weate on 01785840826 or email, chris.weate@btopenworld.com Phil Elson on 01785841657 Ruth Green on 01785840054 Look forward to seeing you all on 25th June!

Keep your home safe and secure Staffordshire Police The risk of being a victim of burglary is very low but if you do get burgled it can affect you emotionally and financially. To reduce the risk of a thief getting into your home take time to check your security. It’s always a good idea to keep your doors locked even when you’re in – if you pop upstairs or into the garden a cheeky thief could get in and steal your valuables. It’s the same if you leave windows open when you’re not in that room. You should always keep house and car keys away from doors and windows to stop a thief quickly grabbing them or even fishing them through the letterbox. Thieves don’t want to draw attention to what they’re doing so consider installing movement activated security lights at the front and back of your property. You probably have valuable tools and garden equipment in your shed so it’s worth making sure you keep it locked and fit an inaccessible bolt/lock to your garden gate. You can register your property for free on www.immobilise.com to help increase your chance of getting it back if they are stolen and recovered by police. You can register anything including jewellery, mobile devices, TVs and game consoles. To receive timely crime and community safety advice from Staffordshire Police, you can download the Staffordshire Smart Alert App from your App store or visit the website on www.staffordshiresmartalert.uk It allows you to personalise your account to you only hear about the things that matter to you.

Votes ‘Remain’

Wolgarston High School Wolgarston High School has voted to ‘Remain’ in the EU. 58% of the 532 votes cast supported the UK’s continuing membership of the European Union. 40% voted ‘Leave’ with 2% still undecided. From Wednesday 11th to Friday 13th of May Wolgarston High School turned its library into a polling station at break time for staff and students to take part in its mock European Referendum. Sixth Form students George Brown and Charlie Knight helped Miss Roberts (Learning Resources Centre Administrator) and Mr Paulauskas (Head of Alps and Teacher of History) with the running of the school’s polling station. “It was a fantastic experience helping to organise this, with the extraordinary help of Miss Roberts,” said George Brown (Year 12 student), “From taking part in this I have learnt so many new things about the European Union and how to organise an event.” “I think it is very important for us as students to learn about politics and understand the power of the voting system,” said Charlie Knight (Year 13 student) “The

previous 2010 mock General Election that I was able to vote in at school has inspired me to apply to Lancaster University to study politics.” “We are delighted that our students became so engaged with the issues. We are now very interested to see how our results will compare with the national vote in June,” said Mr Tapp (Headteacher).
