Friends of Penkridge Library Friends of Penkridge Library would like to say a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who took part in the recent Penkridge Library Consultation

4

Although this is the second time that we have faced a downgrade to our service, over 961 responses were submitted on paper by 1st April. It is reasonable to think that with the online responses we may have tipped the 1,000 mark. This is an incredible achievement and probably accounts for at least 30% of all responses from across the County!

The consultation results will announced later in the summer, so please keep up to date with the campaign by following the Friends of Penkridge Library Facebook page. We are committed to keeping our library services alive, so if you would like to help or have any suggestions, please contact our friendly group at friendsofpenkridgelibrary@gmail.com

It is notable that the response came from a wide range of people and organisations throughout the village, including 18 local businesses, 9 village organisations, Penkridge Parish Council, Penkridge Girlguiding Association, Rainbows and Brownies, Smart Start Nursery, and over 100 children from Marshbrook, St. Michael’s and Princefield primary schools. Junior consultation documents were also submitted by 255 children at Penkridge Middle School and 82 students at Wolgarston High School. With this strength of support, we hope that Staffordshire County Council will recognise the value in keeping professional staff at Penkridge library and that we really do care.

Thank you for your support and keep using Penkridge library! WEEKLY ACTIVITIES AT PENKRIDGE LIBRARY Wednesday – 10 – 12: Our Computer IT buddy is happy to help with queries (big or small) on how to use your computer or tablet. Just pop along or book a time if needed. Friday: Baby bounce and Rhyme (term time) – 10 – 10:30am. Suitable from bump to pre-school ages. See more on page 20.

Penkridge Poppies To mark the 100 year anniversary of Armistice Day a community arts project has been launched called ‘Penkridge Poppies’. The aim is to create Penkridge’s own version of the Tower of London display ‘Fields of Blood’ which was unveiled a few years ago. You may remember what a stunning display this was to see all of those poppies coming out of the Tower and spilling around the moat. It is hoped that community groups as well as individual members of the community might want to get involved by making poppies. Our finished poppies will be arranged down the front of the Methodist Church building onto the pavement below and will be put in place in time for Armistice Day, which will make for a wonderful eye catching and moving display for everyone to see, particularly anyone travelling up and down the A449.

Would you like to get involved in this piece of community art by making your own poppies to add to the display? The poppies can be any size and made from any materials, as long as they can withstand the British weather! Some ideas include knitted poppies, poppies made from fabric or recycled plastic bottles. The exciting thing is that each poppy will be individual and contribute to a bigger display. A Facebook page called ‘Penkridge Poppies’ has been set up which has some knitting and sewing patterns on it, and new ideas will be added from time to time to inspire everyone to start making poppies. There will also be two ‘crafter noon’ events help in the Methodist Church Hall on 1st September and 6th October between 12pm and 3pm, you can also deliver poppies you have already made during this time. The goal is to make 8,555 poppies which is the population of Penkridge, meaning one poppy for every person living in the village. Please like our Facebook page and get involved! Further details can be obtained by getting in touch with Sue Culver, the Methodist Minister at Penkridge through the Facebook page or by emailing deaconsueculver@gmail.com

LO C A L AU C T I O N H O U S E TO TA K E ON THE ‘CUTTLESTONES 300’ CYCLE CHALLENGE FOR CHARITY Team members Rich Forrester and Andy Machin were joined by General Manager Rosie Blackburn’s husband Stuart to take on the challenge of clocking up a total of 300 miles between them in a single day. The goal was to raise funds for two causes – The Birmingham Children’s Hospital and ‘Fiona’s Fight’, which aims to raise £5,000 to help send terminally-ill Stafford woman Fiona on holiday to Disney World with her three young children to make precious memories.

Three keen cyclists from Cuttlestones Auctioneers & Valuers have taken on gruelling 100-mile bike ride from the businesses’ Penkridge sale room to Aberdovey on 16th June – all in the name of charity.

10

Rich says: “I went to school with Fiona - when I heard the news that she had been diagnosed with terminal cervical cancer, and that this campaign had been launched to help send her on a precious holiday with her kids, I wanted to do something to help. At Cuttlestones we’re always up for a challenge, and with Andy, Stu and myself all keen cyclists we decided to take on this challenge. We’ll be splitting any proceeds between Fiona’s Fight and Birmingham Children’s Hospital, another cause close to all our hearts. Any donation, no matter how small, will help us raise funds for these great causes and will be gratefully received.”

On Tuesday 5th June a group of Wolgarston High School’s Year 9 and Year 10 students took part in The Under 15’s Chance to Compete Outdoor Competition tournament. The tournament was organised by Staffordshire Cricket and Chance to Shine. Wolgarston’s team on the day were Ross Parker, Nathan Harris, Nathan Parton,

“The team was amazing. We won the tournament, going unbeaten throughout!” said Mr Mason (Teacher of PE), “Our students were a credit to our school in their performance and also how they conducted themselves. Each team member played brilliantly demonstrating their excellent teamwork. However a special mention needs to be given to Ross Parker who captained our team superbly.” “We are so proud of the team,” said Mrs Stanton ( Head of PE), “This has been an excellent year for our school’s sporting achievements and for us to now to be Under 15 Outdoor Cricket Champions is amazing.”

success

PENKRIDGE FOOTBALL Throughout the tournament, Jamie has made some great saves, keeping Penkridge in the game at times. Excellent performances from Captains twins Dan and Doug, leading by example and providing some excellent assists and goals. Braden was on the left putting the opposition under pressure with his speed and footwork; driving into the ‘box’.

The Y7 team from Penkridge Middle School won the Stafford District Sports association Cup on tuesday. Having played the semi-final against Sir Graham Balfour high school on Monday and winning 6-2, the final was upon the boys very quickly indeed, playing the following day. The final was at Stone Dominoes and we were in for a treat. The Y7 team were up against Weston Road High School. The team gave the spectators a fantastic game, demonstrating brilliant skills, team work and great goals! Every player on this team showed that they wanted to win and had the ability to do so. One of the best Y7 games ever seen!

Solid performances came from James and Will at the back, protecting the goal along with Doug who had an excellent game at centre back (even scoring from there!) Noah and Alfie worked well together in the centre providing Braden and Dan with wide balls to open up play. Finlay, our striker, with his turns and runs, using his left foot provided us with great goals and pressure on the oppositions back two. Last, but no means least, a well done to Harrison, Callum, Mason, and Edward for the team work they showed, supporting and working hard to secure a fantastic 5-0 win.

St Gile’s Hospice Phoenix Project Nikki Archer, lead for Bereavement Service at St Gile’s Hospice gave an interesting and informative presentation on the Phoenix project to the Cannock & District Soroptimist group.

At the meeting on the 5th June SI Cannock was delighted to welcome Nikki Archer Supportive Care Director & lead for Bereavement Service at St Giles Hospice to the meeting. Nikki gave an extremely interesting and informative presentation on the Phoenix Project which was formally launched in February 2015. Phoenix is an innovative project, organised within St Giles Hospice. It is an initiative specifically designed to provide support to children and young people under 18 years who have lost their parents or a close family member. Support is given in a variety of ways tailored to the age of the child or young person and may take the form of one to one sessions, peer support and group activities depending on what child and their parent feels is most appropriate. The project also aims to provide practical advice to the bereaved adult and emotional support through talking to other parents in similar situations. The Project 16

works with local schools and other agencies to identify children who would benefit from the work of the Project even if they had not previously had a connection with the hospice. Nikki explained that each year in Staffordshire there were estimated to be 260 bereaved parents and approximately 440 newly bereaved children. Nikki ended her talk by reading a young girls experience of losing her father, which, although emotional to hear, highlighted the value of the project from the family’s perspective. President June Bould has chosen the Phoenix Project as her charity she wishes to support in her Presidential year. Please follow all of Cannock Soroptimist activities on their website: www.sigbi.org/ cannock-and-district or on their facebook page: www.facebook.com/SICannock

Cajun Roast Monkfish with Potato Rosti MEALS IN MINUTES Monkfish has a wonderful firm flesh with a meaty flavour and is well suited to roasting, however cod loin or a thick piece of salmon fillet will work just as well. S E R V E S 4 | TA K E S 6 0 M I N U T E S

INGREDIENTS 1lb 9oz Monkfish fillet 2 tbsp olive oil 1 tsp lemon juice 1 tbsp Cajun seasoning 8 medium desiree potatoes Salt & black pepper 225g cherry tomatoes

METHOD Cut the monkfish into large chunks and place in shallow roasting tin. Mix together the oil and lemon juice and pour over the fish. Sprinkle on the Cajun seasoning. Cover and set aside for 15 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Place the unpeeled potatoes in a large pan of salted water and boil for 5 minutes. Drain and leave to cool. Peel the potatoes and grate into a bowl. Season well with salt and pepper, divide and shape into 8 flat cakes. Place the lemon slices in the roasting tin with the monkfish and cook for 15 minutes, add tomatoes and cook for a further 6 minutes until the fish is cooked through.

1 lemon, sliced

PENKRIDGE MIDDLE SCHOOL AT P R E M I E R O P E N I N G which was undergoing a major refurbishment it was decided that the work being done could be combined with the grand opening on Saturday 2nd June.

Students from Penkridge Middle School learned about healthy eating and were able to pass this onto local residents following a project with the Premier Foodstore in the village. During lessons the children in Mr Mobberley’s Year 6 class learned about the Eatwell Plate, food groups and the need for a balanced diet. They then designed and made their own meals. Following some discussion with the proprietors of the Premier Convenience Store in Penkridge

In class the children used their art and persuasive writing skills to design advertisements for the shop which contained some great features. On the day of the opening, which saw the shop completely transformed, two members of the class; Ethan Turner and Cameron Tarplee were invited along to be part of the opening ceremony along with other guests and then run a healthy market stall outside. On a busy Saturday morning with shoppers on their way to and from the market and elsewhere the boys gave away free fruit, passed on the healthy eating message and shared their work. Their endeavours also encouraged many visitors to the new shop. The boys did a great job and were praised by Premier Manager Sandy for their enthusiasm and maturity. A future Del Boy and Rodney in the making.

Charity Football Day Students from Penkridge Middle School and Cannock Chase High School enjoyed a day of football courtesy of the Whistle Foundation as part of a special day organised in memory of former referee Richard Eades and the Smile for Joel Charity. Wolves mascots Wolfie and Wendy the time came for the boys to take on their role as ball boys for the game. The match was played between two teams made up of referees and refereed itself by former professional World Cup official Alan Wiley (famous for once showing Wayne Rooney a red card). Whilst most have the boys have been ball boys at Walsall FC before this was played in a much more intimate environment with far more action for the lads. The day began with a friendly football match with the Penkridge and Cannock boys taking on established club Black Country Cobras. This proved to be an excellent game resulting in a 4-3 win thanks to a hat trick from captain Rafe Whitehouse and a fourth from Liam Tuck. After some time to enjoy the numerous activities on offer in the gorgeous sunshine and meet

Everyone enjoyed the experience at a day which was for an excellent cause and played in great spirit. Despite all of the players being referees this did not prevent the man in the middle showing a red card to leave one of the teams with 10 men and resulting in a 2-1 win for the red team. Thanks to to Gregg Rolason from The Whistle Foundation and Suzi Evans, mum of Joel, for allowing us to take part.

OPCC SUPPORT THE FIGHT AGAINST SCAMS Staffordshire Police and Crime Commissioner’s office is supporting a month-long campaign to urge people to report scams and attempted scams. Every year millions of people across the UK fall prey to scammers and Staffordshire residents are no exception. June is Scam Awareness month, a national campaign set up by the Citizens Advice Bureau, to raise awareness and help reduce the impact of scams with advice and support. Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Arnold supports Friends Against Scams. ‘I am proud to be a SCAMbassador and would encourage all those that are interested in showing their support to join the campaign and be part of our #scambassador network. ‘The tactics used by scammers leave victims socially isolated and ashamed of telling their friends and families what’s really going on behind closed doors. I’ve seen the

emotional pain caused to victims of fraud, it hurts people emotionally, physically and financially. Often the emotional pain is the hardest. This is why I and “Friends Against Scams” need you to help in protecting those closest to you’. This year’s theme is ‘Don’t Miss a Trick, Be Scam Aware’ which urges everyone to recognise, report and talk about the issues. Scams Awareness month asks us all to trust our gut instinct when receiving an unexpected or suspicious communication and be sure to obtain advice before taking any action following a potential scam attempt. If you would like to be a ‘Friend Against Scams’ you can attend a short awareness session in person or complete the online training at www. friendsagainstscams.org.uk. Citizens Advice research shows that almost three quarters (72%) of people surveyed had been targeted by scammers over a two year period (2015-17). More than a third had been targeted five or more times.

Penkridge WI R E C E N T U P DAT E S In May Penkridge WI enjoyed a trip to the National War Memorial Arboretum, a beetle drive and a talk from Bob Maddox on ‘A History of Penkridge’.

In May, following a previous inspiring talk about the National War Memorial Arboretum, a group of intrepid W.I members took to their cars and set off for a day out. Unfortunately, on arrival the weather was not suitable for a leisurely stroll around – it rained all day! However, we all boarded the tour train, which took us round the main monuments and included a clear, detailed commentary of the major sites. The memorials are both inspiring and very touching – well worth a visit. Our other event in May was the monthly meeting. This time members enjoyed a fish and chip supper, followed by a “flower drive” (a beetle drive with a twist!) Each round was hotly contested amid much laughter – and frustration with unhelpful dice! The winner was Sheila Moulton who received a pack of serviettes and Chris McGhee was presented 38

with a dish mop for allowing the rest of us to beat her! Thanks to Irene Kirk for organising the event! Bob Maddox was the guest speaker for the June meeting. His topic was “A History of Penkridge”: a slideshow of photographs spanning from the 1800’s to the present day. A fascinating use of overlaying “then and now” pictures depicted the huge changes that have taken place, particularly to the development of the main road where buildings have disappeared, or are still surviving! Of particular interest were photos showing the changes to the Methodist Church Hall as this is where we meet. Our next meeting is on Monday 2nd July at 7.30pm in the Methodist Church Hall. Visitors and new members are always welcome.

PCC SHINES SPOTLIGHT ON YOUNGSTERS THROUGH MEDIA PROJECT Marisa Keenan from Media Climate CIC who took the lead on the project said: ‘Projects like this build public confidence in our communities by creating a feeling of wellbeing and reducing isolation of young people. The People power fund has a great positive impact on the children who attended the activities, building self-confidence, learning new skills and making new friendships’. More than 20 youngsters, took part in the Access All Areas media project at the Greenwood Studios in Bridgtown, Cannock. The series of weeklong workshops taught IT, teamwork and media skills along with the ability to learn new music and drama skills for a performance. Those not wanting to perform on the stage also had the opportunity to try new skills in graphic design, music technology, music recording, lighting, sound and stage work. Staffordshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Matthew Ellis, said: ‘I was delighted to see how the money has been put to good use to help these youngsters gain a real sense of achievement. Projects like Access All Areas are engaging local young people who may not normally be involved in these sort of activities and they all gave a really polished performance’.

Youngsters took part in the project with creative original ideas for the drama and an amazing array of talent in the final showcase performance including singing, dancing, acrobatics and band creation. Kenyon Walker, Director of Media Climate CIC said: ‘We are very pleased with the response and look forward to more activities to promote our community with its local talented young people. £2,975 was awarded through the People Power Fund which supports locally-driven community safety activities in communities throughout Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent. The window for the next round of applications funding opens on Wednesday 1st August and runs until 14th September.

Farm Gets Go Ahead for Expansion

Owners of Canalside Farm, near Stafford, were delighted to receive planning permission this week, for the expansion of their busy Farm Shop. The family-run Farm, which has been growing its own produce for over 30 years, has always had a Farm Shop on site, but since building a new shop in 2011, the Farms popularity has escalated. So much so, that the car park will now have an extra 100 spaces to cope with demand. The expansion plans will increase the Farm Shop by a third and include a new Bakery and Production Kitchen, so that the Farm can make more of their own products on site, as well as a bigger delicatessen counter and new gift section. Owners Chris and Wendy Barton said: “We are thrilled to receive the go ahead and hope that this will improve the overall food offer and experience for our customers. Our aim has always been to make as much produce as we can here on the Farm, so with the new Bakery, working in collaboration with our fantastic team of qualified butchers, who make all of their own products, we think it will be a winning formula for both our Farm Shop and our Café.” Indeed this is not the first time the Farm has expanded, as they opened a brand new Café back in 2014, which was a completely new venture and has been extremely busy from the moment it opened its doors. Since then, the two businesses have gone from strength to strength, creating 40 new jobs and selling over 100,000 punnets of strawberries; 20,000 home-made sausage rolls and serving over 110,000 cups of coffee.

44

Located on the side of the Trent and Mersey Canal, with a beautiful decking area, you can see why people love it, as they sit and watch the canal boats go by, whilst sampling some of the region’s finest produce. Chris continued: “We hope that the introduction of the new Bakery and the increase in car parking spaces, will also benefit our Café customers as well. The Café is very popular, especially when the weather is good, so the extra car parking spaces are greatly needed and mean we can accommodate all our customer’s even on the very busy days. Although we are very lucky, in that not all of our customers arrive by car - we obviously have a lot of people arrive on canal boats, but have also become a regular ‘stop off’ point for cyclists, walking groups and even the odd canoe!” Work on the expansion plans will commence at the beginning of September, and it is anticipated that work will take around 6 weeks. The owners are hoping to operate as normal throughout this time, but are encouraging customers to look on their Facebook page www.facebook.com/ canalsidefarm to keep updated. Canalside Farm Shop is located in Great Haywood, just 6 miles from Stafford. It is situated just off the A51, between Stone and Rugeley (postcode ST18 0RQ). Beauty Tips

SUMMER HAIR CARE You may have a vision in your mind’s eye of your hair blowing in the summer wind looking fresh and gently highlighted. However the reality is that strong sun, high temperatures, humidity and pool or sea water will damage your hair leaving it dry, brittle and anything but healthy. You can help yourself by generally taking a gentler approach to your hair styling in the summer months. Use a mild shampoo, wash less frequently to allow the natural oils to be absorbed and when you do wash your hair, finish with a cool or cold rinse to seal the cuticle. Try to limit hair treatments such as bleaching and cut back on your usage of heated hair styling tools such as curlers and hair straighteners. If your hair is long enough, put it into a loose bun and tuck the ends out of sight as this is 47

the most vulnerable part. Pulling your hair back in this way can also mean you don’t have a parting which will prevent sunburn on your scalp, although don’t forget to apply sunscreen all around the hairline. If you don’t have long hair, do have a parting and don’t want to wear a hat, it’s essential that you apply sun lotion to your scalp. Your hair might look a little greasy during the day, but that’s better than a peeling scalp making you look like you have bad dandruff. Wet your hair with plain water before going into a pool or the sea as this will reduce the amount of chlorine or salt absorbed into your hair. Once you’ve had a swim, rinse your hair with plain water again before sitting back in the sun, and use a mild shampoo at the end of the day to ensure those chemicals

S T M I C H A E L’ S F I R S T S C H O O L S AV E S T H E P L A N E T Recently the Eco club decided to enter the Annual Perkins Eco award. It is organised by Perkins Engines in Stafford and this year schools across Staffordshire were asked to design and make a stained glass window using recyclable materials. Mrs Farrington and Miss Jacks worked alongside the Eco club to support the children in their design and make of the window.

The Eco club children at St Michael’s have worked tirelessly this year to try to reduce waste from school by recycling. They collect the milk cartons daily, wash them and put them in the recycle bin. They collect in waste fruit from break times and put it in the compost bin and regularly check that children and staff are turning off lights and computers as well checking that all paper is being put in the classroom recycle bins.

48

On 6th June two members of the Eco club from year 4, Harriet Ball and Sophie Shipman presented the finished design to a panel of judges who included employees from Perkins and a representative from Stafford Borough Council. The girls were very confident speakers as they had to stand up in front of the room and do their presentation to the other schools and an audience that included the Mayor and Mayoress of Stafford. They then had to answer questions about how they came up with the ideas for the window; the judges were so impressed that they were awarded the Runner’s up prize of £100. Eco club are now deciding how this money will be used to further promote recycling in school.

GOING ON HOLIDAY? Before you go, consider some simple crime prevention measures. Make sure your home looks occupied to deter would-be thieves. Consider using timer switches for a radio and lights in different rooms when it goes dark. Ideally ask a trusted neighbour, friend or relative to keep an eye on your property. Ask them if they can switch lights on/off, draw/ open curtains, move post out of view and perhaps park their car on your drive if you have one. Consider leaving valuable items such as jewellery and laptops with relatives or friends or out of sight. Mow your lawn and put all garden tools away. Ensure your shed and garage have good strong locks and rear garden gate has at least an minaccessible bolt. Do not update social media sites including Facebook and Twitter with the fact you are on holiday or away from your home.

August Bank Holiday MARKET & CAR BOOT SALE After a record-breaking May Bank Holiday, in terms of both visitors and temperatures, Penkridge Markets are hoping for a repeat performance this August.

On the 27th August, they will be holding a fantastic Bank Holiday Market and Car Boot Sale. With numerous stalls, as well as people selling goods from their car boots, there couldn’t be a better time to grab yourself a bargain. The event will run from 9am to 3pm, and with free admission and free parking, it’s a great free day out for all the family. A wide variety of stall holders will be there, including delicious local produce such as homemade pies, breads and cheeses, to chutneys, jams and pickles. There will be everything to tempt your taste buds from pastries and preserves to cakes and confectionery. As well as all of this fabulous food on offer, there will be stalls selling plants, garden ornaments, handbags, clothes, candles and arts and crafts, to name but a few. If you fancy a bargain then don’t miss the Car Boot Sale, with approximately 50 ‘car booters’ expected. It’s amazing what you can find everything from tools and furniture, to cheap books, toys, CD’s, DVD’s and even the odd antique. But if you want to take part yourself and turn some of your unwanted possessions into cash, then simply turn up on the day from 6am. The site is all hard standing (so no muddy fields) and with

56

a fee of just £8 per car, you’re bound to make a great profit! Matt Williams, Manager of Penkridge Market said: “Our Bank Holiday Markets are always very popular, but this year has definitely been our busiest. The hot weather in May brought people out in their thousands and our ice-cream man was very busy all day! We’re really hoping for more hot weather this August Bank Holiday, but if not, we are very lucky that our site has a hard standing area, so it’s still a great day out whatever the weather.” There will also be plenty of refreshments, including The Old Deanery Farm Cafe, which serves a wide range of hot and cold food from a bacon sandwich to delicious fish and chips. Penkridge Market is situated in the centre of Penkridge, and is signposted off the A449. It is easily accessible from Junction 12 of the M6 and is only 6 miles from Stafford; 7 miles from Cannock and 10 miles from Wolverhampton (postcode ST19 5AP). Admission and parking is free. OF CANNOCK

What a “crafty” lot of ladies Cannock W.I. turned out to be! Seven of the committee members each hosted a craft table for members to have a dabble at a variety of experiences. This included card making with Del, coaster creation with Helen, shabby chic with Sue and Di, cookery with Clare, flower arranging with Jill and colour craze with Chrissy. After a half hour taster, members were rotated around the tables. The time went quickly: and all agreed that this had been such a successful venture that we must do another “Crafty Dabble” again soon. Besides having an experience, learning and

sharing a new craft, and taking home a made item; it gave an opportunity for members and new members to mingle and get to know each other better. The new committee, which took over in April are looking into providing a more vibrant and varied programme of events for the coming year: with the emphasis on achieving friendship through communication. Our W.I. meetings are on the second Thursday of the month 10.30am at St Luke’s Church Centre, Cannock. Visitors are always welcome to come and join us for refreshments and a chat, to see if they would like to join the W.I.

Design Tips

THE PERFECT GUESTROOM

If you’re expecting visitors, help them feel welcome by preparing the guestroom in the manner of a five star hotel. Make the room look inviting, lived in and encourage them to feel at home. Make the room comfortable and relaxing to impart a feeling of friendliness and wellbeing as well as adding some luxury. Give the room a good airing before your guests arrive by

Tel: 01785 712864 Mob: 07572 701913 Email: info@penkridgecattery.co.uk www.penkridgecattery.co.uk

throwing open the windows and letting fresh air circulate. Add some scented flowers as a cheerful welcome. Use beautiful bed covers and make sure there are plenty of pillows. Don’t forget to leave fresh bath towels, hand towels, face flannel and some pretty soap. Put out some extra items to make your guests feel even more special. Include shampoo, hair conditioner, bubble bath, toothpaste, cotton wool and anything else you may think could be useful. Add a bottle of water and glasses for the ‘hotel touch’. Make space in the wardrobe and drawers and leave them open so your guests don’t think they need to live out of their suitcase. Ensure there are plenty of hangers too. Leave out some books or magazines they may enjoy and show that you’ve really thought about them and their stay with you.

Getting Children Gardening T I P S F R O M D I A R M U I D G AV I N comes from that tiny seed is really amazing to kids. Children love bright colours so spring and summer should be used to their full potential. For spring, you can’t get a greater injection of colour than Daffodils; the traditional Narcissus ‘February Gold’ variety is both beautiful and classic. They will brighten up the grey days and kids love to pick them. Chionodoxa bulbs grow into elegant clumps of foliage that produce tiny bright blue star shaped flowers, they are perfect for small pots on a patio and easy for kids to plant themselves. It isn’t difficult to get the kids out into the garden. Most children adore the outdoors for the fresh air and the freedom to run around and they rarely feel the cold. Open spaces for families are vital for our well being, particularly in built up areas where they are rare or often under threat from potential developers so that the areas that we do have should be utilised as effectively as possible. Next to larger parks and public spaces, our own gardens are perfect playrooms for children. This doesn’t mean that they have to be specially designed around their requirements, but by factoring in a few ideas children can be introduced to a whole new world where they can grow their own vegetables, pick their own fruit and start to appreciate how wonderful nature is. Plants are a great place to start. A great way to grab the interest of very young children is to think about plants that grow or take root really fast as they won’t want to wait too long for the results! Mustard and cress seeds are the most obvious things to grow and they are still the most magical as they will grow within a week. You will only need some wet cotton wool placed in a container to provide the perfect growing environment for the seeds. Sprinkle them on finely and leave in a warm light place. Use a stencil to create animals or stars for brilliant seedling shapes. Sunflower seeds are another good place to start, simply because of the scale of the mature flower in the summer; the fact that this massive flowering stem

62

For summer, plant the brightest colours in the most interesting shapes for real inspiration. Deeply scented Monarda or Bergamot flowers look like messy mops of hair and come in deep red or pink. They look great when contrasted with the deep blue and towering Agapanthus flowers. Kids will love these huge flower heads as they appear like fireworks and last for months. The great Papaver poppy flowers are bright red and soft to the touch and when they go over, the kids are left with brilliant seed shakers. For real excitement, plant Cosmos atrosanguineus or Chocolate Cosmos, the chocolate vanilla aroma from its deep crimson coloured flowers is straight out of ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. Snapdragons or Antirrhinums are a real favourite; watch the bees go right into the flowers for nectar and see the ‘doors’ snap shut behind them. They also make fabulous finger puppets! A plant that you can’t leave out is Stachys byzantina or Rabbit’s Ears. This silvery grey plant has the softest, fluffiest leaves of all, it is really charming. You may decide to section off a children’s flower bed to give them a sense of ownership, but if you wish to keep all the plants together or if you have a smaller space all together, all these plants will not only stimulate kids, but they will be beautiful additions to any part if the garden. If you have the space, planting a tree can be a memorable activity for children. And as the children grow up, so will the trees – lots to look forward to!
