St Michael’s CE (A) First School celebrate success from recent Ofsted The Children, Staff and Governors of St Michael’s CE (A) First school are celebrating success from their recent Ofsted inspection where they were rated “good”. Headteacher Jayne Grundy said

the outcome of the inspection reflected the hard work and commitment of all the staff, governors and children.

The inspection recognised that the Headteacher,

the staff and governors successfully promote the school’s aims of creating an environment where

pupils are safe and happy and where pupils enjoy

learning. Furthermore the inspectors reported that

pupils had a clear understanding of what they were

expected to learn by the end of the lesson and how

long they had to complete their task. Teachers were

The previous inspection (2011) stated that the school needed to raise attainment in Key Stage 2 particularly in Mathematics. The inspector praised the school on addressing this issue: “The actions senior leaders have taken to accelerate pupils’ achievement in mathematics have proved successful.” St Michael’s prides itself on working very closely with parents and the community and the Headteacher said it was wonderful to read the positive parents comments in the inspection report. If you would like to visit St Michael’s First School please contact the school office on 01785 712344.

also praised for using questions well to challenge and move pupils’ learning forward.

Brewood’s Best-kept Secret By Robert James

I have a secret that I’m reluctant to share, because as ever exclusivity is everything. Whether it is a secluded spot on a popular beach or a muchcoveted family recipe for Spaghetti Bolognese, secrets are special. So with a heavy heart I must – for fear of swift and brutal consequences from my editor if I don’t – share with you my secret and risk The Penkridge Advertiser’s entire readership descending like a plague of starving foodies upon my new favourite eatery, The Oakley Arms in Brewood. Located on Kiddemore Green Road, The Oakley has outstanding kerb-appeal; it sucks your eyes from the road faster than a mobile police speed-trap. Once on-site there is ample parking, as well as an enchanting garden overlooking a lake, which provides the route into the recently-refurbished and re-opened building: a building that has survived dereliction and arson before becoming the jewel in the Brunning and Price’s family of pub restaurants. Inside in the bar there is much space, but also warmth and charm. My dining companion and I are guided through to a table within a quieter eating area. There, sitting snugly beneath towering bookshelves and ornate chandeliers, beside the fireside, we are promptly served three courses of tip-top cuisine by a team of friendly, competent waiting staff. The pub is busy; the vibe is upbeat, yet relaxing. The décor is “beyond-pub” - more plush pub/posh pub restaurant - but with an accent on the buildings’ past.

has a well-oiled kitchen team. My salmon is fresh, flavoursome and expertly enlivened with accompaniments that include fennel and radish. It’s a promising start. Next up is: ‘7oz fillet steak with portabello mushrooms, peppercorn sauce, tomato and chips’ (£26.95) and a ‘8oz steak burger topped with grilled bacon and Cheddar, served with coleslaw and chips’ (£12.95). My steak is tender, succulent and moist; the chips, soft and pillowy, with a crispy outer shell. The peppercorn sauce is potent but not overpowering. Dessert is ‘Crème brûlée with shortbread biscuit’ (£5.50)

Starters are ‘Smoked salmon with spiced avocado purée’(£6.95) and ‘Staffordshire asparagus with crispy poached egg, pickled wild mushrooms and hollandaise’(£6.95). Both parcels of food are exquisitely presented. This is a world away

8

from mere ‘pub grub’; already it’s clear that The Oakley

and ‘Dark chocolate praline torte with cherries and raspberry sorbet’ (£6.25). We eagerly devour every morsel, murmuring only praise and an eagerness to re-visit The Oakley again and again. So, now the secret’s out. I do hope there’s time to visit again before this magazine goes to print, otherwise it’ll be impossible to get a table.

NOW OPEN

The Oakley Arms Brewood

We have been open now for a month or so and the locals seem to be delighted with the transformation from the ‘old Oakley’ to the new. We have had many old members from the time when it was a private club trying to remember where they used to come in, where they used to sit and even where they used to dance and taken pleasure in hearing all the stories from the past. We have also seen a good number of walkers, taking advantage of our ifootpath route, coming in for afternoon refreshments. Dog owners have been here in droves, enjoying the fireside tables in the bar area, and even had some happy horses and owners. If you haven’t yet come along to take a look, you find us a classic country pub in style, with open fires, wooden floors, good old furniture and lots of rugs and plants. We wanted to make the most of those rare treats of sunny

days, so have created a garden room which overlooks our lake and a terrace to enjoy a spot of al fresco dining. Inside, a large bar sits at the centre of all things, where you’ll find an array of cask ales on tap, a back shelf crammed with malts and gins and a decent list of around 50 wines, all chosen with great devotion of duty. We’re foodies at heart and our team of chefs have produced a seasonal menu with a spine of freshly prepared, classic English dishes, complemented by some more exotic influences from around the world. We hope you will find us the perfect place to eat, drink and chat and like us, believe that it’s been worth the wait. All the best, John.

St Lucia Paradise Island by Helen Taylor Just an 8 – 9 hour flight away from our shores is a spectacular Caribbean island jewel: St Lucia. Home to stunning natural landscape, pristine beaches and divine sunsets, as well as vibrant nightlife and colourful local culture, this island getaway is fast becoming a firm favourite with holiday-makers looking for paradise. So for those of you looking to make a break for it this summer, here’s the low-down: Climate With a warm, temperate climate all year round – temperatures are routinely in late 20s and early 30s (°C) – there’s never really a bad time to visit the island. However, hurricane season is between June and November, so you can expect rain and the odd storm during this time. Best time to visit is during the winter when the days are warm and there’s little rainfall. Natural Attractions Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Les Pitons – twin mountain peaks, which rise up from the south – St Lucia is the perfect place for adventure. Cut a swathe through the thick blanket of lush, mountain vegetation on a guided tour and hike to the summit of Gros Pitons to be rewarded with panoramic views of St Lucia’s rich tropical landscape. Take a laid-back ride above the rainforest canopy, stop-off underneath a gushing waterfall or take a stroll through the rainforest itself. For the adrenaline seekers among you, hop aboard a Segway or horseback ride along the coast. Sulphur Springs are a must also. On the side of a dormant volcano, you’ll see thick clouds of hot steam and bubbling pools of charcoal-coloured mud emanating from between the rocks. You can even take a hot bath in the gooey black mud to sample its rejuvenating properties, which are said to be great for the skin. Activities St Lucia offers a plethora of experiences designed to nourish body, mind, and soul: fishing, kayaking, jet-skiing, and sea-trekking are but some of the many activities to be enjoyed on the water. What lies beneath in the warm, translucent waters is a thriving underwater ecosystem,

14

which makes snorkelling and scuba-diving most popular. Enjoy the azure waters at Anse Chastanet with its luminous coral reefs populated with over 150 different species of fish. Dive to discover the Lesleen M shipwreck, near Anse Cochon, where you’ll be free to explore the hidden nooks and crannies amid vividly-coloured seahorses, lobsters and eels. There you’ll discover the Keyhole Pinnacles, four seamounts that are said to resemble Les Pitons. You’ll also see inky black coral branches and neon frog fish.

Beaches Famous for its award-winning beaches, the island has an plenty of riches – from secluded coves in Pigeon Island National Park to family-friendly sands on Reduit Beach. Lie in a thatched parasol and gaze over breathtaking scenery on Anse de Pitons or seek out the lap of luxury with an all-inclusive experience in a resort overlooking Anse Chastanet’s 150-metres of silvery volcanic sand. Food and Culture Jazz music lovers won’t want to miss the popular St Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival in April/ May. The Pigeon Island National Landmark acts as a backdrop to the main stage, which has before seen performers including Luther Vandross, Rihanna and Elton John. The St Lucia Carnival is a glittering celebration of traditional Caribbean culture that takes place every July. Don’t miss the parade, where locals dress up in extravagant neon costumes decorated with feathers and shimmering sequins. Join them as they dance through the streets to pounding calypso and soca music. Be sure to also indulge in the fantastically rich and diverse Creole cuisine. Seafood is available in abundance and many travellers delight in dining on tuna, mahi mahi, and snapper. National specialties include plantains, green figs, and salt fish.

Celebrating DofE success at Buckingham Palace On 16th May 2016, Hannah Roberts from Wolgarston High School in Penkridge attended a once in a life

time Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) Gold Award

Presentation at Buckingham Palace, London. At the

event Wolgarston High School was presented with a special plaque from the DofE Charity by celebrity supporters Oliver and James Phelps aka the

Weasley twins from Harry Potter, acknowledging

the schools commitment to running the DofE and

thanking it for giving young people the opportunity to transform their lives.

The DofE is celebrating its Diamond Anniversary

throughout 2016, having supported millions of young

people in the UK and across the globe to achieve DofE Awards since it was founded in 1956. The prestigious

Gold Award Presentation at Buckingham Palace is one

of many memorable events taking place to celebrate 60 years of the Charity.

Members of the Royal Family; HRH The Duke of

Edinburgh, HRH The Earl of Wessex and HRH The

Countess of Wessex, congratulated those that were present including young Gold Award achievers,

organisations that deliver the DofE and special guests such as corporate supporters and DofE Diamond

Challengers, who have set themselves a personal

challenge to raise money for the DofE Charity in its

anniversary year. Doing a DofE programme significantly impacts young people’s futures, enabling them to

develop vital skills for life and work, such as confidence, commitment, resilience and team work. Widely

acknowledged as the world’s leading achievement

award for young people, Wolgarston hold a licence to

deliver DofE programmes to anyone between the ages of 14-24 years old.

Shirley Henderson, DofE Manager at Wolgarston

attended the presentation. Speaking proudly about their involvement with the DofE, Shirley said: “Wolgarston

High School has held a licence to deliver the DofE for 16 years of which the last two have been as a direct

licensed organisation and I feel honoured to have been invited to Buckingham Palace to receive a

commemorative plaque to acknowledge and say thank

24

you for our work with the Charity during its Diamond

Anniversary year. Our young people are encouraged to push themselves outside of their comfort zones when

doing their DofE and the skills that they develop can be

life-changing, so for us to be involved is something very special. We are also proud to say that Hannah Roberts received her Gold DofE Award at the Palace on the same day.”

Peter Westgarth, Chief Executive of the DofE Charity said: “Through the DofE, Wolgarston is inspiring the

success of its young people; equipping them with the attributes and skills to get a job and build strong relationships whilst opening up their worlds and

introducing them to a broad range of interests. We are

truly grateful to all of our licensed organisations for the work that they do, they are an integral part of the DofE family, and our Diamond Anniversary is a fantastic opportunity to say thank you.”

“I feel incredibly privileged to have attended the Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. It was inspiring to see so

many other Gold award holders ,” said Hannah Roberts (Year 13 Student), “ It was a once in a lifetime

opportunity that I will never forget. Meeting the Weasley twins was brilliant too.”

Butterflies

By Diarmuid Gavin The epitome of a British summer garden is a colourful scene full of flowers that appear to try and outdo each other, a chorus of flowers in a border that slowly emerge, display their frills and then relax back and allow one of their colleagues to take over. But the scene isn’t complete without the sideshows, nature coming to visit. And what’s more beautiful than a cartoonish fluttering of butterflies as they flap down to rest on the long spikes of Buddleia flowers which are now dotting the landscape, hungrily feeding on the sweet nectar? We’re passionate about them in this country. In May, taking a break from the maddening circus of Chelsea Flower show week, I brought my little one to Regent’s Park Zoo and apart from the admittedly comical meerkats, the Butterfly House proved most charming. The problem was these were exotics and on an already warm day to have to enter a hothouse was slightly uncomfortable. You can create your own display by encouraging butterflies to visit your garden. There is a secret however. To do this you must plant plants that they love. But you must also look after the butterfly through all its stages from larvae to caterpillar to colourful fluttering fashionistas. The organic method of gardening will produce the best results in this regard so avoid using chemical sprays and pesticides. Secondly, a more relaxed approach to what you might otherwise think of as weeds. For examples, nettles are a wonderful breeding ground for the larvae as are thistles, docks, sorrel weed and meadow grasses. So consider leaving a little patch of your garden uncultivated which the weeds will colonise quickly. So what plants should you include? The aforementioned Buddleia is otherwise known as the Butterfly bush and is one of the most reliable July 2016

attractors. Other shrubs you could consider include lavender, escallonia, hawthorn, blackberries, pyracantha, heathers and hebes. They love native plants so loosestrife, valerian, dandelions, buttercups, angelica, teasel and clover will signal your garden as wildlife friendly zone. And you can include in your borders and bedding a host of colourful perennials and annuals – choose from cornflowers, heliotrope, verbena, solidago, alyssum, echinacea, sedums, aubretias, calendulas, asters, zinnias and dianthus. Britain has 58 species of butterflies but recent reports show that 72% of butterfly species declined in abundance over ten years and distributions of 54% of butterflies fell, many sharply. So if you want to help the conservation efforts, you can start in your own back yard!

What is Reading Hack? Reading Hack is a new National campaign by The Reading Agency to encourage Young People to read and visit libraries. Reading Hack is a programme led by young people aged 12 to 24 who do reading activities and volunteering, called hacks, to gain skills and experience. The programme inspires young people to become advocates for reading and to lead the way in engaging their peers- particularly those who struggle with reading, don’t like it or don’t see its value or don’t use libraries. Being a Reading Hack has great benefits: gaining skills and experience, confidence with meeting new people and it is a great help when preparing a college application, C.V or job application! For more information please ask at Your Library or visit www.staffordshire.gov.uk/volunteerinyourlibrary Find out more about Reading Hacks at www.readinghack.org.uk

Soroptimist International Cannock and District Feel Good Look Good Event Success! Cannock Soroptimists held a very successful Feel Good

Look Good event on Friday 27th May. Around 50 women went along and enjoyed talking to the many stall

holders representing various organisations connected

with women’s health, all concerned with helping women to feel better about themselves and with ways to look after themselves.

President Carole Holdcroft welcomed everyone,

including SI Midland Chase Region President Alyson

Green and Amanda Milling, MP for Cannock Chase. She also thanked Cannock Lions for sponsoring the event. The first speaker was one of SI Cannock’s newer and

younger members - Kate Young - who told the audience a little about herself, about Soroptimists and about her

reasons, as a busy woman working full time, for joining the international organisation. She explained that it is

the balance between working on projects which support

those women less fortunate than us: whether involved in

domestic abuse, trafficking, needing help to develop skills to become independent or self sufficient, with the social side of Soroptimism - the fun and friendship - which

appealed to her initially and which still appeals to her. Kathy Coe, founder of Pathway, then spoke a little of the many ways they provide support to women victims of

Domestic Violence. Their service has developed so much over the 22 years since it began: last year they gave

direct help to 37 women in the Cannock area alone. Kathy introduced a woman who has been a client of Pathway

and who now works with them supporting other women.

She told the audience her story and it was very powerful, enabling others to understand a little of the way a victim of DV can feel. She said that the bravest thing she ever

did was to make that first step and call the help line - and

although it has been a long process she has never looked back. The 24 hour helpline number is 01543 676800.

Alison Jackson of the worldwide charity Look Good Feel Better for cancer patients spoke of the free beauty

workshops provided locally at New Cross and Stafford

Hospitals. Cosmetics are donated by some of the large beauty houses and each woman who goes along to a

workshop not only receives help and advice but also a

46

President Carole speaking to the audience

bag of beauty goods valued at around £200. Anyone

interested in knowing more can phone LGFB on 01372 747500.

Fiona Ford, who founded Fresh Hair, a bespoke wig fitting service for cancer patients and who is a past winner of SI Midland Chase Inspirational Woman

competition, explained that her service will soon be

available for two days every week at Stafford Hospital, an extension of the salon currently at Stoke Hospital. Like

LGFB, her service gives an enormous confidence boost

to women at a time when they have little self confidence.

More information is available at www.uhnmcharity.org.uk Vicky Farmer, nutrition advisor, dispelled some of the

myths about our diet. We need to maintain a balanced

diet which includes carbohydrates, fats, fibre and protein - cutting anything out completely can bring its own problems.

The evening gave the opportunity to talk to a colour

analyst, nail technician, breast care specialist, podiatrist and staff from St Giles Hospice as well as the speakers.

There was a free prize draw and one lucky woman won a basket packed with pamper goodies. There was a great ‘buzz’ with everyone finding the evening informative and

interesting - an added bonus for Cannock Soroptimists is that a number of the ladies are keen to come along to a meeting and find out more about the club and the organisation. More information can be found at

Hospice’s Big Summer Walk is back Katharine House Hospice organisers are getting excited for their flagship event, the BIG Summer Walk which will takes place on Sunday 17th July 2016. Last year the event raised over £25,000 for the hospice, and it is hoped that the event will be even bigger this year.

The Big Summer Walk is held at Marquis Drive on Cannock Chase and there’s two routes to choose from; the Abraham’s Valley Hike which is a 20KM multi-terrain route, and the Pepper Slade Ramble, a 12KM undulating route, both offering their own challenges but with stunning scenery. This year, the event is proudly sponsored by Western Power Distribution (WPD), the company responsible for electricity distribution in the Midlands, South West and South Wales. Phil Wedgwood from WPD said; “We are delighted to support the Big Summer Walk. We’ve supported Katharine House Hospice in different ways for a number of years because of the excellent work they do in the local community.” Lisa Carson, Events Fundraiser said; “We have already received lots of bookings for the hospice’s biggest event of the year. If you haven’t already booked your

July 2016

place, then you really must, both routes are truly stunning. What better way to support your local hospice than taking a walk in the stunning countryside which we are lucky enough to have on our doorstep and help pay for free care services in the community”. Lisa added “we also encourage walkers to raise sponsorship as the entry fee covers the cost of us putting on the event – every little helps and every penny raised really makes a difference to the lives of local people living with life limiting illnesses”. Interested walkers can book by phone on 01785 270808 or online at the Hospice website, www.khhospice.org.uk follow the fun on Facebook – Katharine House Hospice, Stafford. Katharine House Hospice has been providing free care and support for adults and their families across Mid-Staffordshire coping with a progressive illness since 1989. 9000 local patients and their families have benefited from its care services over the last 26 years. The hospice relies upon the generosity of the local community to help generate 75% of funds needed to run its range of vital services.

New Beacon shop opens its doors These days charity shops are a mainstay of the British high street, but first one in the UK is believed to have opened in Staffordshire back in 1899. It was launched by the West Midlands sight loss charity the Beacon Centre, then known as the Wolverhampton Society for the Blind. It stocked baskets, chair seatings and mats which were sold to raise cash for the organisation. The items were made by a group of 15 men and three women who were employed in a workshop on the same site as the shop in Wolverhampton’s Victoria Street, then in Staffordshire. Fast-forward more than 100 years and while the products may have changed, Beacon Centre remains as committed as ever to its shops, having just opened its first store in the beautiful village of Penkridge. Whereas once manufactured goods would have filled the shelves these days it is children’s toys and women’s clothes that prove the big draw but Beacon Centre’s head of enterprise operations Tracey Ford says people still love to shop in aid of a good cause. She said: “Beacon is now in its 141st year and we are proud of our history of innovation and hope that we can continue that tradition in the years going forward. “The new Penkridge branch is our seventh store and everyone has made us feel very welcome in the area. Our customers like to know they are helping a good cause while doing their shopping and picking up a bargain.” Although the Beacon Centre already has branches in Cannock and Bloxwich as well as other sites in the Black Country, the new Penkridge shop marks the first time the organisation has had a retail presence in the district of South Staffordshire. It also marks a return to the charity’s roots as it is stocking items made by service users in the craft room at the independent living centre at the charity’s base in Sedgley in Dudley.

July 2016

The new Penkridge store also features a digital kiosk so that shoppers can find out more about the work of the Beacon Centre across the region. To mark the opening of the store on May 25th the popular dancing grannies act The Fizzogs were on hand to perform to the crowds who had turned out. Also in attendance was South Staffordshire Council chairman Bernard Williams, Penkridge Parish Council Chairman Calvert Stonehouse, and South Staffordshire Penkridge North East and Acton Trussell Councillors Isabel Ford and Len Bates. Mrs Ford added: “We have been keen to move into South Staffordshire for a long time and Penkridge is a great location. We are delighted the store is now open and look forward to welcoming customers. “Our Beacon Bus will be making regular visits to showcase our services and offer people the chance to get advice on low vision equipment.” There are a number of volunteer opportunities available at the store which is on Stone Cross and donations are also welcome.
