Answering a Call for Help When Stafford Lions received a request from Spinal Muscular Atrophy Support UK requesting financial help for a local young man, the club was only too happy to help. Seventeen year old Andy Speke a sixth form pupil at Wolgarston High School Penkridge is totally dependent upon his powered wheelchair for all mobility but desperately needs a powered centre leg rest. This will allow him to independently adjust his leg position throughout the day for both comfort and pressure relief. The cost of a leg rest is £3104.56. Chris and Dave Lewis, both members of Stafford Lions Club visited Andy, who is hoping to go to University to study Sports Sciences and Media with a view to becoming either a football coach or work in sport media. They were welcomed into his ‘man cave’ where they presented him with a cheque from Stafford Lions which will help towards the cost of his leg rest. If YOU feel that you could further help Andy with his fund-raising please contact Stafford Lions Club or claire.holdcroft@smasupport.org.uk Would you like to join us? You would be made very welcome! If you are interested visit our website www.staffordlions.co.uk or phone 08458335834 Stafford Lions will ebe out and about this Christmas - Look out for us! Saturday 1st & 8th December - Queens Retail Park Sunday 9th & 16th December - Asda Stafford The Baswich Food Collection will take place after Christmas this year on Sunday January 13th.

The Rotary Club of Cannock 10k Road Race RAISES FUNDS FOR TWO WORTHWHILE CHARITIES

This was the ninth annual event which started and finished at Marquis Drive. The race was started by Cannock Chase MP Amanda Milling who also presented the prizes to the winners. Runners from some 15 running clubs from a far afield as Holmfirth in West Yorkshire took part in this year’s race, along with a number of unattached runners representing many local companies, and this year the race even attracted runners from overseas.

The Rotary Club of Cannock annual 10k road race was held on Sunday 18th November with some 200 runners pounded the roads around Cannock chase on a crisp autumn morning to help raise funds for two very worthwhile charities This year the Cannock club has pledged to help The Midlands Air Ambulance and British Heart Foundation by donating all funds raised from the event equally between these two worthwhile charities. A representative from Midlands Air Ambulance advised that the service is funded by private donations and that it costs around £2000 every time the service is used.

This year’s winners were two unattached runners Mathew Woodman in a time of 35 minutes 46 seconds and the winner of the ladies race was Rachel Burchell in a time of 45minutes and 47 seconds. Trophies were presented to the first three male and female runners also prizes were also awarded to age category winners. The club President David Gardiner thanked everyone who helped organise the day’s events, all the competitors and marshals and Amanda Milling MP for taking time out from her busy schedule to support the event again this year. David also advised that this year’s race has received sponsorship from a number of local organisations totalling in access of £3.500 and thanks to their generosity he believes that the event has raised around £5000. The Rotary Club of Cannock plan to organise the event again next year and details of the date will be announced early next year.

OF PENKRIDGE We were reminded of how long it took to set up a photograph-perhaps that is why so many showed bored or stern expressions! How did they manage to keep the children still for so long? We saw photographs of Blackpool; the bathing huts, the donkey rides, Punch and Judy and how strange it was that everyone, including the children, wore a hat! Brian explained how the “Magic Lantern Men” travelled round the country with selection of coloured slides depicting religious themes, or encouraging people to “sign the pledge” by showing the perils and pitfalls that befall people who don’t live a good life! This months meeting was the Annual Members’ Night, where the committee take a well- deserved back-seat and the whole evening is arranged by the members, ably overseen by Winifred Mayne. The speaker was “The Magic Lantern Man”, Brian Morris. Brian, from Leek, has been collecting slides for over 35 years and invited us to take a trip back in time to the mid to late 1800’s. To set the mood Brian dressed in the style of the period, complete with top hat, high collar and long coat. We were shown photographs and slides covering all aspects of life at that time, contrasting the differing lives of the rich and poor, general photographs of the time and some family portraits.

Brian ended the evening by showing us some delightful cartoons made by having two pictures hand painted onto glass slides, shown alternately, to depict movement. One depicted a man in bed asleep, mouth open, when a spider ran into his mouth! Yuk! This caused consternation amongst the audience as did another set of slides showing where babies come fromthe stork of course! A lovely evening. Interesting, informative and good fun. The competition, a pretty scarf, was won jointly by Winifred Mayne and Vicky Atkins. The raffle prize was won by Christine Bryden. Looking forward, our next meeting is “The Christmas Event” on Monday 3rd December.

Here’s a job which, on first impression, may not seem to be ideal, you won’t get paid, and you may get called out in the middle of the night, and it guarantees you will end up in jail. HMP Featherstone’s Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) is now seeking new recruits. IMBs consist of ordinary people who have volunteered to do this extraordinary job. Chairman, John Credland explains. “Every prison and immigration removal centre has an IMB attached to it, their role is to ensure that Home Office/Ministry of Justice rules and regulations are properly applied and that proper standards of care and decency are maintained”.

IMB work is unpaid, with expenses covered. It is interesting, challenging and absorbing. The skills required are enthusiasm, open mindedness, effective communication skills and the ability to exercise sound objective judgement. We are particularly interested in people who live within approximately 20 miles of HMP Featherstone No special qualifications or experience is required, as necessary training and support is available. The task typically takes up approximately five half days a month however this can be flexible. If you are interested, then either phone 0203 334 3265 or to obtain a paper application form from imb@justice.gov.uk also see the IMB’s Facebook page. Completed forms should be sent to imbrecruitment@justice.gsi. gov.uk Please quote campaign reference 881/ Featherstone/2018

Christmas - a time for giving

A N D T H AT I S E X A C T LY W H AT C A N N O C K S O R O P T I M I S T S WILL BE DOING AGAIN THIS YEAR of domestic abuse. The gifts will be things such as clothing, toys, books, toiletry sets: the things we all love to receive on Christmas Day, though for these women and their children the gifts will mean rather more as they will all be without any other family members at that time.

There are many things the Club members do throughout the year to help women and children locally and globally, but Christmas is a time of year when it is especially good to remember and help those in need. At the end of November members will decorate a tree at St Luke's church as part of the Tree Festival when many local groups are involved in this lovely community event. Members will all donate gifts which will be wrapped and given to the women and children who will spend Christmas living in the refuge for women victims

It has become tradition for Club members to provide and cook a 3 course Christmas meal during December for those people who use Mill Street soup kitchen in Cannock - some of them are homeless, for all of them this will be their only hot meal that day, possibly that week. Instead of sending cards to each other at Christmas Cannock Soroptimists give a donation to the Soroptimist International President's Appeal which this year is Water, Women and Leadership. Soroptimists celebrate themselves, too and this year their Christmas Celebration will be held at The Barns on December 13th. They will enjoy Christmas Fare and will be entertained by singers 'Voices of Tantallon'.

On Thursday 26th October Wolgarston High School held a fundraising day organised by Mr Skinner (House Leader of Pyrenees and teacher of PE) and Mrs Richards (Front Office Manager) and Mrs Marson (Senior Finance Support Officer). “The aims of the day are to heighten staff and student awareness about cancer and how we can make a positive difference by taking part in Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” said Mr Skinner, “All of the money raised today will be donated to Cancer Research UK.”

events for Cancer Research. “I think it has been a brilliant day and to have everyone involved has made it amazing,” said Mrs Richards. “We would like to thank all of the staff and students who have baked cakes for us to sell,” said Mrs Marson, “I heard that there was a secret bake off competition going on amongst the staff in which Mr Skinner and Mrs Brocton kept asking Miss Roberts and her student helpers who had made the best cake, with Mrs Dodd pointing out that her cupcakes had sold out first, then Mrs Garland Ridding’s.”

Students and staff all donated one pound each to come into school in non-uniform on the condition that they were wearing something pink. “We also held a bake sale in our library at break times in which staff and students had brought in cakes for our pop up store to sell,” said Miss Roberts (Learning Resources Centre Administrator) “A huge thank you to Tim Asson, Jasmine Clarke, Holly Morphew (all Year 11 students), Rachel Rollinson (Year 10) and Joshua Witherstone (Year 12) for giving up their break time helping to sell all of the delicious cakes and raising £224.74. They did an amazing job!” “I think it’s such a good cause for us to support and that we are given the chance to fundraise for Cancer Research,” said Holly Morphew (Year 11 student), “Because of how it affects families and the local community. It shows we care as a whole and we are trying to make a difference.” For the past ten years Mrs Richards and her sister have taken part in different fundraising 28

OF CANNOCK dealer, Paul Martin, the host of 16 years of Flog It. She then proceeded to inform Clubs about exciting events planned in 2019 for the Staffordshire Federation WI Centenary: the theme being “Inspirational Women”. The entertainment for the evening was provided by singer Michael James, who sang songs from the 60’s 70’s 80’s and West End shows, which had us all foot tapping and singing along. Our own Barbara Matthews then joined him in a rendition of a Chas and Dave mix which resulted in a few of us to be ‘moved’ enough to have a bit of a jig at the back of the room! Funny lyrics had been submitted for a competition amongst the members and the winners, Moira Johns and Sandy Hobbs from Hayes Green W.I. were delighted with their win of £15 and £10 respectively, after reading out their funny poems to much laughter and applause. Cannock W.I. played host to the bi-annual Heathside W.I. Group Meeting which included Presidents’ and members of Hayes Green W.I., and Shareshill W.I. Club at St. Luke’s Church Hall. We were pleased to welcome Christine Hill, Treasurer of Staffordshire Federation of Women’s Institute who explained that the accounts are very healthy. Christine then shared her experience of the SFWI Spring Council Meeting from the previous day: where the speaker had been a very spirited, and knowledgeable antique

The raffle winners were Eileen Smith and Barbara Matthews from Cannock W.I.; and Pauline Sawbridge from Shareshill W.I. Golfers' Memorial Day

RAISES £1,000 BOOST FOR CHARITY where guests got the chance to play alongside a Golf Professional. A prize presentation and charity auction concluded the day raising £1,000 for the charity. John’s widow Jayne, who organised the event, said “Throughout the entire day there was an amazing atmosphere Someone said to me at the end of the event ‘Great day guys – John would have had a ball‘ which sums it up for mesomewhat emotional, but a fitting tribute to my husband, who loved his golf and his time at 3 Hammers”. 3 Hammers Golf Complex in Coven, hosted a Cancer Research fundraising day earlier this year in remembrance of John Forrester, a local golfer who sadly passed away after a short illness. Wolverhampton born John was a great friend and supporter of the national award winning Academy at 3 Hammers and “simply loved his golf!”. The golf day was hosted in his memory to bring his family and friends together whilst enjoying the game he loved so much. 65 golfers supported the event which included golf tuition, lunch and an afternoon of playing golf

John had lessons at the Complex and Senior Instructor Rory Haigh commented “John was one of my first clients when I joined 3 Hammers Golf Academy. He went on to become one of my best clients and a good friend. During our time working together, he managed to achieve his golfing goals, which was credit to his passion for the game. His passing was a great loss to all at the Academy but his memory will live on”. The day proved such a success that the John Forrester Memorial Golf Day is set to become an annual event with the next golf day planned for 23rd May next year.

R EADY IN 4HR S 3 0

Heat half the butter and the olive oil in a frying pan and fry the leek and shallots for 6-7 minutes until softened. Remove from the heat and stir in the apricots, breadcrumbs, chestnuts and half the thyme leaves. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper and leave to cool. Preheat the oven to 190C/170C Fan/Gas Mark 5. Line a large roasting tin with buttered foil. Use about one third of the stuffing mix to stuff the neck end of the turkey (press the rest of the stuffing in a shallow ovenproof dish to cook separately). Weigh the stuffed turkey and calculate the cooking time - allow 20 minutes per 450g plus 20 minutes. Place the turkey in the lined roasting tin and smear all over the skin with the remaining butter. Sprinkle over the rest of the thyme leaves and season. Cover the turkey with a tent of buttered foil and roast in the preheated oven for the calculated cooking time, basting occasionally. Uncover the turkey for the last 45 minutes until the skin is golden and the juices run clear when a skewer is inserted into the thickest part of one thigh. If the juices run slightly pink, return the turkey to the oven for further 15-20 minutes then check again. Leave the turkey, loosely covered with foil, in a warm place to rest for at least 20 minutes. Stretch the bacon rashers with the back of a knife and cut each rasher in half. Wrap the short rashers around the cocktail sausages, securing with a cocktail stick. Place in baking tray and cook in the oven for 20-25 minutes until golden and cooked through. Drizzle a couple of spoonfuls of juices from the turkey over the stuffing in the dish and cook in the oven at the same time as the baconwrapped sausages for 20 minutes. Serve the turkey on a large warmed platter with the bacon-wrapped sausages and garnish with fresh herbs. Serve the extra stuffing separately along with all the usual festive vegetables.

Farm’s First ‘Countryfile Ramble’ PROVES HUGE SUCCESS!

Friends, family, staff and customers, all came out in force on Saturday (10th November) to join Canalside Farm, on their first ever Countryfile Ramble in aid of Children in Need. Everyone arrived at the farm at 10am, with their walking boots on, ready to raise money for this worthwhile cause. Chris and Wendy Barton, owners of the Farm, led the 4 mile walk, taking in the stunning Staffordshire countryside, including the Shugborough estate and the glorious canal network.

Chris continued: “We would really like to turn this into an annual event and are hoping that even more people will come and join us next year.” If you would like to donate towards the team’s efforts there is still time – simply log onto the website https://countryfile-ramble-for-bbc-childrenin-need-2018.everydayhero.com/uk/ canalside-ramblers or pop into the Farm Shop, where there are collection buckets.

Owner, Chris Barton said: “As Farmers ourselves, we religiously watch the BBC1 Countryfile programme every Sunday evening. So when we saw that they were asking people to put on their walking boots and do a sponsored walk to raise money for charity, we thought it was a great idea. The Farm is located on the side of the Trent and Mersey Canal, so we are lucky enough to have some beautiful walks, right here on our doorstep. We are always encouraging our customers to go for walks along the canal, when they visit us, so we thought this was the perfect opportunity to get people out walking and raise money for charity at the same time.” Since the BBC started fundraising for Children in Need they have raised a staggering £972 million, helping disadvantaged children and young people across the UK. Their aim is to ensure that every child in the UK has a safe, happy and secure childhood and the chance to reach their potential. 50
