Wolgarston Prom On Tuesday 3rd July not only was the England football team playing in their nail biting quarter final match against Columbia in Russia, another important event was taking place at the same time. Wolgarston High School held its annual Year 11 Leaver’s Prom at The Moat House in Acton Trussell.

The event was organised by Mr Skinner (Head of Pyrenees), Mrs Dodd (Head of Himalayas), Miss Roberts (Learning Resources Centre Administrator) and Miss Allen (Learning Mentor), Miss Harding (Examination Officer) and Mrs Farmer. “It was a really amazing evening, We have all had so much fun,” said Shannon Muggleton (Year 11 Student), “It is something that we will never forget, it has been brilliant.” Parents and other students arrived at The Moat House for six o’clock to see the students making their entrances. This year there was a variety of different transportation used. They ranged from Porsches, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, VW Camper vans to motorbikes. Students were greeted with custom made nonalcoholic cocktails and were then seated at their tables in the main function room, where all of the

8

students dined together on an exclusive three course menu. All of the students were given forms to vote for their Prom King and Queen. Once all of the votes had been counted up, the winners were announced. This year’s Prom King and Queen were Matthew Bramwell and Toni Dadd. Both were presented with custom made crowns and sashes. The prom queen was presented with a customised bouquet that was supplied to us by Lavender Florists in Penkridge. “It has been a pleasure for us to organise prom for our students and see them enjoying themselves after working so hard this year at school. A massive thank you to Party Box based in Bushbury, Wolverhampton and Lavender Florist for supplying us with balloons and flowers for the evening” said Miss Roberts, “I would like to thank everyone who has helped make this event so special. All of our students have all done Wolgarston proud.”

Life in a Hospital Schoolroom PRESIDENT OF CANNOCK SOROPTIMISTS, JUNE BOULD, WELCOMED

PAMELA WADE TO THEIR RECENT MEETING. PAMELA SPOKE ABOUT ‘LIFE IN A HOSPITAL SCHOOLROOM’. She was appointed along with another teacher. They got rid of all out of date resources and made new; they changed the routine so that all children could attend for the whole morning rather than just half of it; they did training so that they could handle various ailments and traumas and so be better able to meet each child’s needs; they made links within the borough enabling children to access events outside of the hospital. Through all of this they eventually became a ‘whole day school’ and secured funding to employ a teaching assistant. She began her talk by outlining her personal journey from attending teacher training college at Alnwick castle to her first teaching appointment at a junior school in West Brom; to her move to a school in Great Barr when teachers were redeployed in the 1980s. During this time she married and had three children, sadly her first two children were very poorly and so a lot of time was spent in Birmingham Children’s Hospital. The time for change came again and this time Pamela answered an advert for a Home and Hospital Co-ordinator for Wolverhampton.

Pamela and her colleagues followed the National Curriculum and they were able to ensure the children did their SATS, GCSEs and A levels where necessary. Like all other schools they have had Ofsted inspections and have fared very well in them. Pamela was delighted to report that New Cross now has a brand new, purpose built, schoolroom. More information about the work of the Cannock club, along with dates for meetings for the coming year can be found on their website: www.sigbi.org/cannock-and-district

LOCAL MEMBERS OF THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION TO REPRESENT PENKRIDGE AREA AT WW1 COMEMMORATIONS IN BELGIUM Members of the Penkridge branch of The Royal British Legion are to join thousands on a pilgrimage of Remembrance to World War One battlefield that culminates in a parade and ceremony in Ypres as part of the end of the First World War centenary commemorations this August. Bearer and wreath layer respectively. Geoff and George will tour some of the same battlefields and cemeteries visited by those on the 1928 Pilgrimage, before marching along the original route through Ypres, to the Menin Gate on the 8th August, bearing their branch standard and a wreath. They will join more than 2,200 other Legion representatives and dignitaries, including Civic and military guests from the UK, Commonwealth and Northern Europe who are taking part. Once at the Menin Gate, George will lay a wreath on behalf of the Penkridge community. George, who is chairman of the Penkridge Branch of The Royal British Legion, comments: “Great Pilgrimage 90 is a unique opportunity for the Legion community to come together and bear our Standards along the same route in Ypres taken 90 years earlier by the veterans and widows of the First World War. The Penkridge Branch looks forward to proudly representing this area at the event.” As local champions of Remembrance, the Penkridge Branch of The Royal British Legion is looking to work in partnership with their community to bring their unique Remembrance message to the Menin Gate, on their wreath, where it will be displayed in a wreath installation for viewing by the general public until the end of August. The Royal British Legion event, known as Great Pilgrimage 90 (GP90), takes place between the 5th and 9th of August and will be one of the largest in the charity’s history. GP90 will mark 90 years since the original Royal British Legion Pilgrimage in 1928, which saw 11,000 World War One veterans and war widows visit the battlefields of the Somme in France and Ypres in Belgium, a decade after the conflict ended. That Pilgrimage culminated in a march through Ypres to the Commonwealth War Grave Commission’s Menin Gate Memorial for a ceremony to commemorate the launch of The Hundred Days Offensive and in remembrance of those who never returned.

The parade will start at midday and we encourage the public to make the trip across to Ypres for the 8th August and fill the Market Square to watch the parade, One Hundred Days ceremony and then enjoy an afternoon of musical entertainment including The Central Band of the Royal British Legion. If you want to find out more about GP90 or your local Royal British Legion branch, then please contact George Elsmore, Branch Chairman – e-mail penkridge.chairman@rbl.community.

Local Legion members, Geoff Yallop and George Elsmore will represent the Penkridge Branch and the local community at the event, as Standard

ROTARY CLUB WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS used to support many good causes and Rotary Charities both locally and around the world. At the meeting the club rewarded four of its longest standing members with awards in recognition of their service to Rotary. Collectively the 4 members have served the club and local community of Cannock Chase for some 140 years. On Wednesday 27th June at their last meeting of the current Rotary year, Cannock Club President Cliff Shore welcomed 7 new members to the Cannock club who had transferred their membership from The Rotary Club of Penkridge. President Cliff Shore advised the meeting that for a number of reasons the Penkridge Club considered the timing was right to hand back their Rotary Charter, however as most of the members wished to remain as Rotarians he was delighted to welcome them to the Rotary Club of Cannock. President Cliff also gave an undertaking to continue to support Charities and good causes in both Cannock and Penkridge area as and when these are brought to the club. Cliff went on to outline the many achievements of the club throughout the past year which includes rising over £10,000 which has been

Student Self-Worth Boosted

WITH THE HELP OF STAFFORDSHIRE’S POLICE AND CRIME COMMISSIONER transform into self-worth shows the difference you are helping to make in their lives’. As well as hearing about the Youth Commission and Staffordshire Police Cadets the students had a tour of the control room at police headquarters, as well as seeing the police dogs in training. They finished their day talking about firearms offences as well as having a go at forensics and the important role it plays in day to day policing. Staffordshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner invited youngsters to find out more about his role and the work of Staffordshire Police today. PCC Matthew Ellis welcomed students from Birches Head Academy to his office, prior to their tour of Staffordshire Police. ‘Encouraging youngsters to do their best and succeed is paramount to making a real difference in their lives’ David Morris, Policy and Research Lead for the OPCC, who volunteers as a Prince’s Trust Mentor has been working with the youngsters throughout the academic year. ‘As a mentor I can now help people make that leap forward at those critical moments in their life. Seeing their self-doubt

Careers and Recruitment coordinator at the Academy, Josephine Bailey, said: ‘The students have all grown in self-esteem and are looking at positive ways to develop when they leave school’. Volunteer and secondment executive at the Princes Trust, Pritpal Surj wants to hear from like-minded adults who feel they could offer their skills to the mentoring programme. ‘It’s been great to see the students gradually become more involved throughout the day with Staffordshire Police. David Morris has been a great support for the kids throughout the project’. Anyone wishing to become a mentor should email pritpal.surj@princes-trust.org.uk

even a little olive oil. Leave your feet to soak for at least five minutes, then using a pumice stone or foot file rub away the hard areas. Using an exfoliating granular foot scrub will remove surface dry skin from the whole foot.

It is wonderful to be able to throw off our boots and socks during the summer and to wear colourful open shoes. But if you have cracked heels and overgrown toenails those summer sandals should be left in the cupboard until you have taken the time to give your feet a bit of love and attention. Dry heels or any areas of hard skin are the first uglies that should be dealt with. Run a bowl of warm water with some moisturising bath oil or 21

Toenails next. The should be cut straight across with a strong pair of nailclippers, then any rough edges taken off with a good quality nail file. Put some cuticle remover cream around the base of the nail, then using an orangewood stick gently push the cuticles back. Then apply a rich moisturizer all over your feet and leave it to soak for as long as possible. Use a little nail varnish remover to clean your toenails before applying two thin coats of nail varnish. Finally, if you find that you have difficulty a professional pedicure is well worth the money and will last several weeks.

Children Take Over Market! fantastic value day out for all the family.

There will be a children’s entertainer on hand to ensure the children are constantly captivated, with his magic tricks, balloon modelling and Punch and Judy shows. Roger Dennis will be bringing his model land rover along and if the children still have lots of energy to burn, there will be a bouncy castle, slide and fun fair. Penkridge Market will be allowing children to have the ‘run of the show’ on Sunday the 30th September, when they host a fantastic Children’s Market. The new event, which was held for the first time in April 2017, proved so popular with the public, the owners of the market have now decided to hold it as a biannual event. The new Market will be entirely dedicated to children, with over 60 stall holders anticipated, selling everything from nearly new children’s clothes to toys and handmade crafts. There will be plenty of activities to keep the children amused, including a petting farm, fire engine, donkey rides, children’s entertainer and a fun fair. The event will run from 10am to 3pm, and with free admission for children and only £2 for adults, it’s a

If you prefer a more calming activity, the ‘Farm on Wheels’ will be there with lots of animals to meet and rabbits to cuddle. There will be a free craft area, where children can have a go at making paper flowers and their own puppets to use in the Market’s very own puppet theatre. Erica Scriven from Toddler Sense Stafford, who proved very popular at the April event, will also be there again, doing toddler sense demonstrations and free trial sessions. If you would like to attend the event, Penkridge Market is situated in the centre of Penkridge, and is signposted off the A449. It is easily accessible from Junction 12 of the M6 and is only 6 miles from Stafford; 7 miles from Cannock and 10 miles from Wolverhampton (postcode ST19 5AP).

5 TECH TRAVEL TIPS Travelling soon? For most people, this also means making sure your tech is packed and ready for the adventure. Smartphones, ebook readers and tablets are now so light and portable that you’d never think of leaving them behind, plus they can add a ton of value your experience. Here are a few tips from Steve Hames at SJH Computing. 1. Backup to the cloud While you’re jet setting around your tech is always going to be exposed to a level of risk. If you’ve backed up your devices to the cloud (eg Evernote, Microsoft OneNote or Google Drive) you’ll be able to access your files easily and securely from anywhere. Hot tip: Scan or save important documents like itineraries and passports to the cloud. 2. Pack the right cables Begging random strangers for a loan of their cable isn’t much fun, so remember to bring the exact cables and chargers you’ll need. 3. Download offline data It’s no secret that global roaming can give nasty bill shocks. Download any files you might need, including important documents like itineraries and bookings, so that you can access them even without a connection.

4. Update and scan Just like you’d make sure you’ve got the right vaccinations and travel gear, make sure your tech is ready to travel too. Set aside a few minutes to run updates for your operating systems and apps, as well as your anti-virus. 5. Mark your territory Let everyone know this tech belongs to you. Write your mobile number on portable devices in case you get separated so whoever finds it can give you a quick call and save the day. You can also get little Bluetooth tracking tags to stick to your gear, so that if you ever lose something you can chase it down. Similarly, you might like to consider enabling the ‘find my’ feature on Apple devices. Having this feature switched on also means you can disable your device remotely, an excellent security option if it’s been stolen.

To serve chilled, allow the peppers to cool completely then cover and leave in the fridge for a couple of hours. S E R V E S 4 | TA K E S 4 5 M I N U T E S

SPACE 2018 IS JUST WEEKS AWAY Space 2018 is almost ready to go – as the finishing touches are put to the launch of this year’s Staffordshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner Summer programme.

Staffordshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner Matthew Ellis introduced the Space programme to bring together public, voluntary and private sector organisations to help nurture, support and guide Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent youngsters. This year some activities will be available for children as young as eight-years-old, with Mr Ellis having provided a substantial increase in funding for the programme. Wherever you’re from in the county, there will be something locally to keep your children occupied during the school holidays. Many of the service providers will be at Staffordshire Police headquarters on Friday June

29, being given a final briefing before Space 2018 opens its doors. Police officers, PCSOs, local support teams, activity organisers will hear from Mr Ellis, who continues his enthusiastic support of the scheme. Space attracted more than 18000 attendees across the summer holidays in 2017 – an increase of 5669 from the previous 12 months. Mr Ellis said: ‘Not long to wait now until Space 2018 begins. We’ve had huge numbers attending in the past and hope for even more this year. Space is all about fun, learning and growing in confidence. Staffordshire, like many areas, experiences higher rates of ASB during summer holidays than at other times and I’m keen that efforts are made to tackle this. Space 2018 will continue with its aim of increasing skills, improving health and wellbeing, and creating opportunities for young people to take part in positive activities to make communities safer.’ For further information visit: Staffordshire.space.uk

Penkridge Bowling Club

PENKRIDGE BOWLING CLUB CELEBRATE 10 YEARS OF GROWTH!

Arguably now the most buoyant club in Staffordshire, Penkridge Bowling Club’s membership heads towards 150. Sadly other clubs report shortage of bowlers competent enough to risk in league competitions. The Penkridge club has come to the rescue of several with the farming out of more than 20 bowlers all now enjoying competitive action albeit with “foreign” clubs. So, why and how the surge? In July 2007 John and Gill Morley began a beginners’ coaching course at Penkridge. Within that initial cohort were Ivan Owen and Richard Palmer who were both totally new to bowling. John Morley detected more than a spark of interest and encouraged both to follow coaches courses. By 2011, John was confident to leave the Penkridge club in the hands of the two recently qualified Level 2 coaches and turn his and Gill’s attention to developing the game elsewhere in Staffordshire. Since that date more than 120 new students of the game have received coaching through the scheme and of these more than 70% have joined the Penkridge Club. A recently introduced Internal League comprising four teams of newly-coached bowlers competing for the “Sylvia Bradford Tankard” has not only produced some hard fought league battles but also some very heart warming spin-off effects. The scheme seems, as if by magic, to have moulded an unprecedented growth and affinity, not just for the game but also for the development of the facilities of the club itself. This major surge of enthusiasm has resulted in a fully revamped visitors pavilion, the thrust for which came from Sally Dix ably assisted by Lewis Parry, David Haidarovic, David Sanders, Mike Read and Mike Woodall who over a few weeks produced an edifice to match any seaside chalet! In a second initiative this group assisted by Tony Jenkins, Steve Whitton, Colin Dugmore, Dave Willits, Eddie Guest, Tom Maguire, Roger Charman and Ivan Owen helped

38

refashion a dismal area of the club surrounds on which they erected a new metal storage shed. After six hours of hard labour, with regular refreshments organised by Jan Sanders, the group sat down to admire their handy work. These developments have been furthered by Mary Owen and Rosemary Parrington who have attended to flower pots and borders adjacent to the clubhouse. All club members are in awe of the efforts of Marie Rowe who has grafted long and hard to re-establish a tired garden area into a vista of vibrant colour. Moreover the members of the club’s teams have taken it upon themselves to share out general housekeeping duties to keep the clubhouse and it’s facilities clean and shipshape. It seems difficult to imagine now that in 2009 the green was almost moribund but speedy and effective measures were taken to restore the sward. In 2010 an automatic watering system was installed. At the same time a “Green surrounds manicure team” of six was formed to maintain grassy areas. The hallowed turf itself is kept in top class condition by veteran groundsman John Simkiss assisted at busy times by Essington B.C. groundsman John Elsmore who is also a member of the Penkridge club. Their routines go on throughout the year of course hence the necessity for club fees. Behind the scenes officers working for the club include Lionel Turner, Nigel Lester, Diane Lester, Jill Nall, Liz Haywood, Judith Litchfield, Helen Skidmore and the captains of the various teams. Penkridge B.C. thrives in an idyllic setting; walled surrounds ensure a veritable sun trap, comfortable spectator seating, the Norman tower of St Michael’s Church enriches the skyline and the Memorial Gardens and the majestic Littleton Arms are on the doorstep. Penkridge WI R E C E N T U P DAT E S Several members of the WI, led by Vicky Atkins, supported St. Michael’s Church Fete on June 16th. Our “Name the Teddy” stall raised £63.24. Many thanks to helpers and visitors for taking part. Our speaker for the monthly meeting was Mr Ken Knowles, Lichfield Town Crier! Mr Knowles is a retired teacher and keen on amateur dramatics. He enthralled us with a fascinating talk about this traditional role. He arrived resplendent in his full regalia and began by loudly ringing the bell and 3 cries of “Oh Yay!” which is derived from “Ecoutez!” in the days of William the Conqueror. The Town Crier role was to proclaim news to the illiterate populace of the times; often not very good news – taxes going up, more men needed for war. Proclamations were attached to scrolls. As the previous scroll had clearly seen better days (made of sticky backed plastic of Blue Peter fame) Ken commissioned a new scroll skilfully embellished to show St Chad and the Guild of Merchants. Ken has researched the history of his predecessors and their special uniform as far back as 1769; a

picture depicting “Thomas Roberts” complete with the bell and silver buttons for his leggings that have been passed down through the City Council. The current red coat and cape were made by Ken and his wife (not all town criers are the same height!) styled on an 18th century coachman’s coat. They also added a beautifully embroidered badge showing the unique 3 spires of the Cathedral and the Verdun Oak grown from an acorn brought back by soldiers of WW1. The tricorn hat is a derivative of the broad brimmed soldiers’ hat, turned up when they needed to fire. Taken up as a fashion item, the aristocracy of the time turned up 3 sides of the hat to display their expensive wigs! P ROT EC T I N G KIDS ONLINE It is important that you and your child fully understand the risks when using the internet, both to their safety and your wallet. From games to social media, the internet plays a major role in many children’s lives. It is a source of information and entertainment for children, but there are those who can and do use it to harm young children. You’re never too young to learn good habits! By following a few simple rules, your child can enjoy the internet safely. Remind your child:

46

How easy it is for a person to hide their real identity online. Not everyone is who he/she says they are.

Never arrange to meet someone they have ‘met’ on the internet.

Never give out contact details to someone they have met online such as their phone number or address.

Never give out personal details that may reveal their age, gender or location, such as their school or college.

Change their email address if they suspect someone they have met online has access to it.

To tell you if they’re worried about something or someone they have come across on the internet.

Only use moderated chat rooms so they can chat to their friends, but are monitored to keep them safe.

Never email a photo of themselves to someone they have met online.

Don’t believe everything they read - sometimes people don’t tell the truth and will say things to manipulate them.

To use their common sense; if something seems wrong or makes them feel uncomfortable, then they must tell you or another responsible adult straightaway.

OF CANNOCK plantings and a variety of tree species. Following a tour of the buildings we were delighted with an excellent three course lunch, which lived up to the expectations of any W.I. All agreed the environment was conducive to learning and making new friends. Tea again in the garden was enjoyed when we visited President Helen’s quaint cottage and garden in Rugeley in response to NFWI Link Together Campaign to act against loneliness. This was purely a social friendship coffee morning with, of course, cakes!

Summer is in full swing, and members are making the most of getting out and about enjoying the weather: taking tea, cakes and friendship into the gardens. Barbara organised a coach trip for 20 members to visit Denman College in Abingdon Oxfordshire. The Georgian house, bought by the W.I. 70 years ago to assist women in ‘household science’, is a residential centre for learning for courses in cookery, craft and lifestyle. Along with other visiting W.I. clubs we took tea on the beautiful lawns overlooking colourful

The monthly meeting was themed for NFWI Healthy Living and Wellbeing Week; and members arrived in loose fitting clothes and flat shoes to take part in a Tai Chi experience from Mick Sheridan. As the movements are slow and the emphasis on breathing and relaxation, it was hard not to want a sleep afterwards! And no real opportunity to burn off the calories from all those lovely cakes! Our W.I. meetings are on the second Thursday of the month 10.30am at St Luke’s Church Centre, Cannock. Visitors are always welcome to come and join us for refreshments and a chat, to see if they would like to join the W.I.

Chairman Sheila welcomed new members Angela Movius, Sue Friend and Val Beale; and Bill Devitt our speaker who bid us to jump on board for a tour on the Orient Express! Chairman Sheila welcomed new members Angela Movius, Sue Friend and Val Beale; and Bill Devitt our speaker who bid us to jump on board for a tour on the Orient Express! In 1825, Pullman, an American engineer, entered a steam engine competition and designed a train carriage with convertible seats which became beds at night, and could be used for workmen to sleep on the job! Following the use of one of his carriages to carry President Lincoln’s coffin to its resting place over 1065 miles away, and the subsequent publicity, Pullman became much sought after and his carriages were used for the Paris to Constantinople railways. As airlines started to affect the viability of train travel some of these carriages and routes became inoperative. Bill was engaged by James Sherwood in the 1980’s to reconstruct and renovate carriages for the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express; the original budget being £450,000: but it eventually running to 16 million! The train now runs regularly from Paris to Venice, and a connecting train from London to Folkestone. Bill shared memorabilia from his trips on the Orient Express that included slippers, menu cards, a leather stationary wallet, and toiletries, all with the embossed logo. Membership secretary Barbara Bowman proceeded to explain how the Data Protection Act would affect the Club; and asked members to agree by email to the Club keeping their records and using their photographs purely for associated use. Pauline Parlane was thanked for hosting a very enjoyable Strawberry Tea at her home promoting friendship, and the opportunity to chat in the sunshine. Chrissy invited members and guests to Tutbury Castle on 2nd October for afternoon tea and audience with Curator Lesley Smith.

Design Tips C E N T R A L H E AT I N G

Don’t underestimate the upheaval and expense of completely renovating your entire central heating system though. Replacing your boiler should only take a couple of days, but installing a whole set of new radiators as well can take a long time. Modern gas central heating is highly efficient and provides instant warmth without inflicting smelly, dry air like storage heaters and gas fires. And some of the radiators available now are almost sculptural in appearance. Prepare for winter and update your central heating while the weather is warm. Most homes have central heating now, but you may not realise that boilers only last for between 10 and 15 years. So if you haven’t replaced your boiler during this time, it’s worth doing. You will have a more effectual system, your energy saving will improve and your heating bills will be reduced.

You must consult a professional company to do this work. By law, all gas boilers must be fitted by Gas Safe registered installers. Find your nearest installer here http://www.gassaferegister.co.uk/. Boilers should also be serviced regularly to ensure they are working effectively and safely. Get this work done now and your home will be toasty and cosy this winter.

THE MIDCOUNTIES COOPERATIVE PARTNER WITH M.A.S.E Trustees who are constantly fundraising to ensure the funds are in place for the next year. To put this donation into context, £10,000 will run two MASE Groups for one year. The determination to raise this incredible amount of money has come from a supreme effort made by all staff at the branches. The MASE has always been made welcome at the Co-operative stores, when promoting the work of the MASE Groups; the friendliness of all the staff has been overwhelming.

Sincere thanks go to the Team at Cannock Chase Regional Community who have this year raised a staggering £10,000 for the Monthly Alzheimer’s Support Evening (MASE) Groups. The MASE is not a core-funded Charity and with five groups to run each month we have to ensure we have sufficient funds to keep going. The amount of money donated takes some pressure off the five

Some Breaking News: It has also been confirmed that the Cannock Chase Regional Community will be continuing their support to the MASE again in 2018! The Trustees of the MASE would like to say Thank You to each and every member of the Co-operative Team for their valuable support and for all the time and effort that has gone into making us their Charity Partner throughout the past year and also for the forthcoming year ahead.
