WIN tickets to Wool@J13!
Knitters, crochet fans, felters, spinners, yarn specialists – in fact, anyone with an interest in anything remotely related with wool – will be keen to hear of a brand new wool festival set to take place in Staffordshire on Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th May 2017.
Please email your answer to hel o@wool-j13.co.uk along with your name and contact details under the subject ‘Tickets Comp’. Alternatively send your answer along with contact details via post to Wool@J13, Lower Drayton Farm, Lower Drayton Lane, Penkridge, Staffordshire, ST19 5RE. Entries close Friday 21st April 2017. Wool@J13 is the brainchild of Staffordshire -based wool artist Ingrid Wagner and Val James who, along with partner Ray Bower, runs a 600 acre arable and beef farm just a few minutes’ drive from J13 of the M6. The pair met during an event at the farm’s established family fun farm attraction in Spring 2016, got talking about the potential of the venue and the huge interest in wool craft for which there was no provision in the Midlands - and the rest is history.
The vibrant new event is perfect for anyone with an interest in wool – whether they spin, knit, crochet, weave, felt or use it in mixed media. Alongside the chance to shop till they drop with over 40 exhibitor stalls, those looking to expand their woolly knowledge can get ‘hands on’ and sign up for a host of workshops and talks on topics that range from left-handed knitting to dizzy sheep spinning, the habits of moths – and many more. Demonstrations throughout the weekend will include shearing not only sheep but also angora rabbits, and competitive types can get creative for the chance to win some great prizes. Camping is an option for those keen to make a weekend of it - a prospect made extra-
attractive given that The Haywood Sisters, London’s top close harmony trio, will provide musical entertainment and there will be ample refreshments on site from Street Food vendors including Vegan options and a licensed bar. A fun packed way to spend a weekend all round. For more details, including a full list of workshops, demonstrations and exhibitors, head to www.wool-j13.uk
The prize
Five lucky wool fans will each win a weekend pass to the event, worth up to £26.
The question
What kind of rabbits will be the subject of a shearing demonstration during the show?
A) Netherland Dwarf B) Angora C) Rex
Winners will be picked at random from correct entries and informed direct. No cash alternative.
Please email your answer to hello@wool-j13.co.uk along with your name and contact details under the subject ‘Tickets Comp’. Fairtrade Fortnight
at Wolgarston High School This past week Wolgarston High School has been taking part in Fairtrade Fortnight.
Their students have been able to take part in activities from signing the school’s Fairtrade Pledge to learning about the positive impact Fairtrade has to people and the environment. Wolgarston High school has been awarded the status of a Fair Active School. This award is given to schools who takes action for Fairtrade within their school and their communities. On Thursday 2nd March the school’s Library held a Fairtrade Bake sale in which Fairtrade cakes and cookies were sold. On Tuesday the 7th March students held another event focusing on promoting Fairtrade Bananas and Fairtrade ice cream milkshakes. “It was great having Ben and Jerry’s milkshakes, I did not realise it was Fairtrade,” said Beth Wright (Year 11 student), “It is a great excuse to buy ice cream, knowing that your money makes a difference o people who are less fortunate than ourselves.” During both events students Alex Lavender (Year 11), George Brown (Year 12) Charlotte Addison (Year 11) all worked together with Miss Roberts to run both events. “I think it is brilliant we have these events in school,” said Ellie Pearce (Year 11 student), “They are fun and you get to learn about different things and how our choices affect others.” “As always I would like to thank our Fairtrade Group Members for their help and support on these events, they always do our school proud,” said Miss Roberts (Learning Resources Centre Administrator).

The National Vintage Tractor Road Run (NVTRR) comes to Staffordshire The NVTRR is the most important event of its kind in the country.
Each year a different county is invited, by Ashley Godsall (the founder member of the event), to host the event. For the 30th NVTRR in 2017 Staffordshire has been selected, and it will take place at Seighford Airfield by kind permission of James Eld the owner of Seighford Settled Estates and his tenants of the runway, Driveme.net, on Easter Sunday April 16th 2017. The Old Knotty’s Tractor Club was founded to plan and host the run and they take their name from the Stafford

Recipe of the month Hot Cross Buns
Home-made hot cross buns are easy to make so why not give them a go? Serve warm from the oven, split and spread with orange flavoured butter for the ultimate Easter treat! Serves 12. Ingredients 500g strong white plain flour, plus extra for dusting 1/2 tsp salt 1 tsp ground mixed spice 55g caster sugar 1 x 7g sachet easy blend or fast action dried yeast 300ml milk 55g butter, cubed 1 large egg
1. Sift the flour into a large bowl and stir in the salt, mixed spice, sugar and dried yeast. Make a well in the middle. 2. Bring the milk almost to the boil in a small pan then stir in the butter until melted. Leave the liquid to cool until it’s just hand hot. Pour the liquid into the well with the beaten egg and mix with a round-bladed knife to make a soft and slightly sticky dough. 3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic, adding a little more flour if the dough is too sticky. 4. Place the dough in a clean, lightly greased bowl and cover with oiled cling film. Leave the bowl in a warm place for about 1 hour or until the dough has doubled in size. 5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead in the dried fruit. Divide and shape the dough into 12 even-sized buns and place on a large greased baking sheet, leaving about 2cm space around each bun.
150g dried mixed fruit 6. Cover loosely with oiled cling film and leave in a warm place until the buns have risen by at least half again and are almost touching each other. This will take about 45 minutes to an hour. Preheat the oven to 220C/200C fan/Gas Mark 7.
For the crosses and glaze 3 tsp plain flour 1-2 tbsp warmed golden syrup or honey
32
7. For the crosses, place the flour in a bowl and gradually add enough cold water (about 2 tsp) to make a thick paste. Spoon into a piping bag fitted with a small plain nozzle and pipe crosses on each of the buns. Bake the buns in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until risen and golden brown. Leave on the baking sheet for 5 minutes then transfer to a cooking rack. Brush with the warmed golden syrup or honey while the buns are still warm.

7th April World Health Day, celebrated on 7th April every year to mark the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization, provides us with a unique opportunity to mobilize action around a specific health topic of concern to people all over the world. The theme of our 2017 World Health Day campaign is depression. Depression affects people of all ages, from all walks of life, in all countries. It causes mental anguish and impacts on people’s ability to carry out even the simplest everyday tasks, with sometimes devastating consequences for relationships with family and friends and the ability to earn a living. At worst, depression can lead to suicide, now the second leading cause of death among 15-29 year olds. Yet, depression can be prevented and treated. A better understanding of what depression is, and how it can be prevented and treated, will help reduce the stigma associated with the condition, and lead to more people seeking help. If you or somebody you know is suffering from depression the Library can help you. You will find books and information to support you. Some libraries even have specialist collections for young people called ‘Shelf Help’ – you can find out more about these titles at Your Library or visit: http://reading-well.org.uk/
IT Buddy available at Penkridge Library Penkridge Library Every Wednesday From 10am until 12noon. Confused about computers? In a muddle with the world wide web? New Event for Penkridge Market Penkridge Market have started counting down
today, to their brand new event which takes place
on Sunday the 2nd April. The new Children’s Market will be an event entirely dedicated to children, with stall holders selling everything from nearly new

There will also be plenty of activities to keep the children amused, including a petting farm, fairground rides and children’s crafts.

Over 60 stall holders will be selling a variety of goods from clothes, toys and books to unique personalised hand-print jewellery and 3D castings. The majority of stalls will be undercover in the indoor market, making it a great day out whatever the weather. There will also be plenty to keep the children entertained, with a bouncy castle, donkey rides and petting farm as well as delicious treats such as ice-creams, sweets and popcorn. An Easter story for Children by local author Diane Pike Three Noisy Chickens And ‘THE EASTER EGG HUNT’.
It’s just a few days before Easter and Grandma needs her three noisy chickens to lay lots of eggs for the Easter Egg hunt she has in her garden. But each day when she goes to the pen - there are no eggs for her to collect! When Easter Day arrives, there are still no eggs for the Easter Egg hunt and all the children are very disappointed.... Until, that is, they go into the garden and get a surprise! Copies of the books can be purchased from: HOUSE OF CARDS shop, Market Street, Penkridge.
