An Evolving Family Business Norton Homestyle, is a company with a forty year history of providing Staffordshire with top quality bathroom fittings and service. Until very recently, it was well known as Norton Bathrooms, but a major expansion into kitchen and bedroom retail to complement our already extensive bathroom showroom lead to a new name to carry the business forward. We would love to tell you how our showroom is appointed with the latest and greatest in bathroom, kitchen and bedroom displays and how our expertise and customer service can’t be found elsewhere. But why take our word for it? Take Mr Lilly’s. Mr Lilly came to see us when he found himself in a predicament. Needing to future-proof his bathroom for himself and his wife, Mr Lilly had contacted a specialist from an advertisement in a local paper, claiming to be an expert in bathrooms for the elderly and disabled. All in all this had been a very upsetting experience for Mr Lilly, his wife and his son. This is why we were so desperate to help him at Norton Homestyle when he came to see us. Mr Lilly dealt with Paul, our senior Project Manager with over twenty five years of experience in Bathrooms and Kitchens and we quickly worked to find a safe and affordable solution to the needs of Mr Lilly and his wife for a fraction of the inflated price Mr Lilly had been quoted before.

Rockstar Equestrian Summer Show Breaks Fundraising Records On August 22nd Kay Scott Jarvis of Rockstar Equestrian Centre held the biggest show at her premises to date, with fantastic results. The show had classes In Hand, Ridden and Working Hunter, as well as a Handy Pony obstacle type course for Mini Members and pony rides in the afternoon. The idea came from Kay’s desire to raise funds for Alzhiemer’s Research UK, a cause close to her heart after she lost her own Mother to the disease in January. The Livery yard and Riding School had already raised some money through Members’ events and bake sales, but the show was designed to be bigger and raise even more. Kay has also been undertaking running events to raise money, and this was all added together for the days total.

The day was extremely successful. As well as the horse classes there were many stall holders to draw in spectators. Sponsors gave money for rosettes or their time to judge events. Guest of honor was Ricky Balshaw, a silver medal winning Paralympic rider. He enjoyed the day so much he plans to maintain links with the centre.
Zoe Baggot, the Regional Charity Co Ordinator says, “It is the first time a horse show has been held for us and it was a fantastic day. Aside form the money raised the success was based on the competitors supporting each other and a really happy, friendly vibe. I truly hope they do another, it was something different and from our charity point of view we got lots of interest too.” Recent media coverage has shown shocking statistics. By 2025 there will be 1 million people in the UK with dementia, due in part to an aging population. But there are 40,000 younger people in the UK with the disease too.
Kay was stunned at the total. “We stayed after the show to add it up and we raised over £850 on the day, after we had taken our costs out. Money carried on coming in from photos our photographer had taken, and when I added in my running money we have a total so far of £1695.20. Kay has no intention of stopping though, and her members are behind her. Most of them have also been affected by Alzheimer’s in their family in some way and all are unanimous in the centre that they will be maintaining the charity Alzheimer’s research UK as their adopted charity. Bake sales will continue to be run, and

So, will it happen again? Kay and her committee members certainly think so. They are currently meeting again to de- brief and plan the next event. For Kay raising money to find a cure is one small way of making sense out of her Mother’s death, and many on her team feel the same way. Tae Kwon Do club competition success! On Sunday 1st November members of NPTKD (Newport and Penkridge Tae Kwon Do) made the journey to Derby Arena for the 2015 TAGB North Midlands Championships. With over 600 competitors from across the region entered into sparring, patterns and power test divisions, NPTKD students managed to bring home 4 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals. Special mention has to go to young Cameron Tarplee for gaining double silver in both boys individual sparring and the tag team event, and to Richard Bratby who fought his way into bronze medal position in a tough heavyweight division, but then smashed the mens colour belt power test; gaining a double gold in both hand and foot. Instructor Daniel Moffat had this to say: “Competitions are never easy, and I have an immense amount of respect for my students that show the courage to test their skill in the ring.

Swim for Jim As a child a close encounter with the deep end of a swimming pool left me with a fear of deep water, consequently learning to swim was not something ever on my agenda….until now! In 2003, my Dad was diagnosed with incurable lung cancer, he spent some time receiving radiotherapy in the Christie Hospital and received support from Macmillian. Sadly, shortly after my graduation in 2004 Dad lost his battle to cancer. Every year since, I have done something to raise funds for cancer charities, from running a sponsored silence with a class of thirty 12 year olds to completing the race for life with some friends. As last year was the 10th anniversary, I decided to challenge myself. I faced my fears and learned to swim!
Dawn at Hydro Health was recommended to me by a friend, who’s Sons had been taught by Dawn so I contacted her and decided to go for it! Dawn isn’t like your ‘regular’ instructor she uses sensory and psychological teaching methods to really individualise lessons to have maximum impact in a short space of time, and with over 20 years swim instructor experience she certainly does make an impact! The pool at Hydro Health isn’t your regular pool either, for starters the water is a lovely 34° which instantly makes you feel relaxed in the water. Secondly, Dawn uses the environmentally friendly Aligator Swimming Pool Water Purification System to keep the water clean rather than chlorine which is certainly kinder to my eyes and doesn’t leave that lingering chlorine smell on your skin! I learned to be more comfortable in the water, and conquered the beginning stages of learning to swim! December 2015
I swam my first proper 5 metres on 8th May 2014, and on the 15th May I managed to swim 10 metres! I began to learn the skills I needed to become a ‘public swimmer’ – turning whilst swimming etc. I then needed to challenge myself to swim in a larger pool to help me build up stamina to enable me to complete my sponsored swim. After swimming with Dawn and enjoying her teaching style I decided that my children would also benefit from Dawn’s experience and took both my boys to swim at her pool - my eldest to improve his stroke, and my youngest to join in her ‘water weenies’ lessons. This very quickly became the highlight of his week, and once he was old enough he began one to one instruction with Dawn too. I would say that becoming a swimmer with Dawn hasn’t been ‘swimming lessons’ it’s been a journey, and one that my whole family have benefitted from. On a personal level, being able to swim and being more confident in the water is wonderful, but Dawn hasn’t just turned me into a swimmer, she has given me skills that I can pass on to my boys as well. But this isn’t even the best bit! The best bit for me is the confidence Dawn has given me to swim with my children. When we go on holiday I am no longer the Mum who’s afraid to go in the water or the Mum who just sits on the side – now I’m the Mum who will happily jump in, the Mum who races the kids across the pool on inflatables, the Mum who does handstands on the bottom of the pool….oh yes and I’m also the Mum of the 2 and a half year old who isn’t afraid to whizz down the massive water slides – why? Because he journeyed with Dawn too. Grassroots Boost An £800,000 grassroots facilities boost for Staffordshire has officially opened on Wednesday 4th November at Wolgarston High School.

FA Skills coaches are also set to take advantage of the new facility to provide sessions for 5-11 year-olds, while Staffordshire FA, which supported and oversaw the application, will run refereeing courses. Local teams including Penkridge Town and Stafford Rangers will also have access to the facility.
The pitch development at Wolgarston High School is the culmination of three years planning and preparation after the school successfully secured a £300,000 grant from the Premier League and The FA Facilities Fund. Additional funding from Staffordshire County Council and other sources enabled the project to some to life. In addition to providing a big boost to students, the new facility will also boost coaching opportunities and playing time for community clubs- who can take advantage of the all weather, floodlight facilities. Phil Tapp, Headteacher of Wolgarston said; “This has been a great team effort and the result is a fabulous facility for our school and our local community. It will help us grow grass roots football for both girls and boys, and will inspire us all to perform at an ever higher level.”
Laura Bassett, who met with local school children during her visit said: “It’s great to be on hand at the official opening this fantastic in Penkridge. To be successful at your sport, it is extremely important to have good facilities, and the development here will make a huge difference for the local clubs and community.” Brian Adshead, Chief Executive Staffordshire FA said “We are delighted that another modern facility is available to footballers of all ages in South Staffordshire. We are grateful that the various funding agencies have worked together with the Staffordshire County Council and our Development Team to make this project a reality.”

Codsall Christmas Treats Villagers in Codsall are anticipating an exciting evening of fun and treats on Friday 4th December. Plans are underway for a whole host of events in the village centre, during which part of Station Road will be closed. From 4pm adults can browse the myriad of stalls, loaded with festive items – just right for those last minute surprises - while the children are enjoying themselves on the merry-go-round or are engrossed with the variety of street theatre. Hungry? Why not indulge yourself with a taste of Christmas in the hot food corner? Be entertained by the fabulous Sunhoney band, followed at 5pm by the young and talented acoustic Folk-Pop singer, Sam Draisey. It all started back in the 80’s when I used to sketch caricatures of teachers at school instead of paying attention to what they were teaching me! I left school straight into a job at an Art Studio and over the 22 years I completed a fine art apprenticeship and worked my way up to Senior Manager. In 2008, I decided to go on my own and since then business has gone strength to strength. My resume includes fine art paintings & illustration, portraits, marketing literature design, graphic design for print and for web, brochure & stationery design and print. My customer base ranges far and wide from individual people through local councils, police forces to major blue chip companies.
Where I’m going... Setting up on my own was a big step, but over the past years I have found my place within the market, especially in the caricature products line, and can now offer a very personal, unique and professional service to my customers. Making A Difference On Friday the 13th of November Wolgarston High School Students created and took part in fundraising events for Children In Need. Students and staff raised a total of £734.95 for the charity by holding numerous activities. Staff and students took part in an out of school uniform day. Student council members organised and ran a cake sale and sold Children In Need Pudsey wrist bands and ears in Our Library. Student council members with Mrs Loftus ( Teacher of Design and Technology) made some delicious cakes for students to buy. “Mrs Loftus and student council did a fabulous job on the cakes, staff and students loved them,” said Miss Roberts.
(Learning Resources Centre Administrator) raised £200 on the day. Our Canteen took part selling Pudsey biscuits raising over £50. “It was lovely to see all of our students showing their support for this worthy cause,” said Mrs Kirk.

Those looking for an extra-special day out can book the ‘Super Santa Experience’ and make their very own ‘Teddytastic’ festive cuddly toy to take home with them at the end of the day, as well as enjoying all the other
animals and let off steam on the adventure playground during their visit. Attraction manager, Val James, says: “The Winter Wonderfarm has proved a real success over the past two years, and we’re determined to make it even better for families this year. VISIT OUR NEW CHRISTMAS MARKET SQUARE AT MERE PARK GARDEN CENTRE Christmas has arrived at Mere Park Garden Centre in Newport! With not long now until the big day, Mere Park Garden Centre (just off the A41) has opened their Christmas Barn and Christmas Market Square. A winter wonderland offering everything you could possibly want and more for the festive period. The Christmas Barn showcases a number of enchanting displays, giving you the perfect idea of how to decorate your home this Christmas. Manager Pam Shaw said “We want to give people ideas and inspiration about how their own homes could look.”
The new Christmas Market Square was also opened in November. Situated in the outdoor part of the garden centre, this festive market style square provides everything you could want for the festive period and more.
For Mrs Shaw and her team at Mere Park, Christmas started months ago. She explained, “We go over to Holland in January each year to buy for the following Christmas.” “All of the plans for this year have been drawn up since about February. All of the areas and displays are designed by the staff.”

Father Christmas’ Grotto is now open after his arrival on Saturday 21st November. Why not join Santa for breakfast, 9-11am on 5th, 12th and 19th December. Just £4.99 including children’s breakfast and a small gift, children must be accompanied by an adult dining. The Grotto is open every weekend leading up to Christmas from 11:15am-5pm on Saturdays and 10:30am-4:15pm on Sundays.

Staying Safe, Healthy and Warm this Winter Winter isn’t everyone’s favourite season and there’s no doubt that the cold weather can be a worry for those of us in later life. There are things we can do to make life a bit easier which help keep us healthy, safe, and as comfortable as possible. Keep moving – Staying active is important for many reasons but it generates heat and helps keep you warm. When indoors try not to sit still for more than an hour – get up and make yourself a drink, spread any chores throughout the day. You could do some chair based exercises if walking is difficult, Age UK South Staffordshire run seated exercise classes across Southern Staffordshire – the first class is free www.ageuk.org.uk/southstaffs or phone 01785 788 472. The classes also encourage flexibility and develop falls awareness, a key issue in keeping well all year round. You could also take part in a free guided group walk in many locations across the area. Eat well – Hot meals and drinks help to keep you warm, and the advice from Age UK is to eat one hot meal per day, and have hot drinks during the day including a good range of foods and aim for five portions of fruit and veg per day. It is very important to eat enough, especially in Winter. The Eat Well Staffordshire project is a free service, led by Age UK South Staffordshire, can support older people who may be a risk from under-nutrition for information about Eat Well telephone 01785 788 483 or www.ageuk.org.uk/southstaffs. Have a seasonal flu jab – If you are over 65 the Government recommends that you have a seasonal flu jab – ideally every year. Flu can develop into pneumonia which can be serious. Check you have had a ‘pneumo jab’ This jab is a one off injection that helps protect against pneumonia, meningitis and septicaemia. Ask your GP if you are over 65 and haven’t had one. Investing for a liveable income The winter nights are drawing in and we are entering the party season. Christmas and Hogmanay are around the corner along with the costs of ‘entertaining’ ourselves, our friends and our families. We are also faced with higher heating and lighting bills and the inevitable coughs, colds and flu that winter brings. The last thing we really need at this time is to look at our Bank account balances to see that the interest we are earning is negligible. If there were a time where a little bit of help were needed, it is now. The problem is that for over 9 years the Bank of England have held the base rate at 0.5% and the high street Banks and Building Societies have got little or no room to manoeuvre when setting their own interest rates. However they are still making money on your invested capital as they try and re-coup the £billions they squandered during the Banking crisis of 2007-2010. So the question is ‘how do we gain the extra interest on our deposit money to give us a liveable income from our investments?’ The answer is quite simple - you move away from the High Street providers and look to Independent Financial Advisers who will give you access to other markets where higher interest is certainly available. Before we go any further I need to point out that at this
stage, many of you will be clutching your pacemaker’s and screaming “but I don’t want to take any risk’!!!! It may come as a surprise or even a revelation for you that low risk investments outside of the Banking arena do exist. They can pay a lot more interest and furthermore they can usually achieve this total tax free (and by this I mean using your £15,240 ISA allowance). If you’ve already used your ISA allowance but are in a low interest cash ISA these can now be transferred to one of the higher paying ‘alternatives’ very simply. On top of all this is the opportunity to invest in other very tax efficient areas, which give rise to a tax efficient income. In most cases if you’re a non-taxpayer or you pay tax at basic rate this income and indeed any surplus growth can be achieved without any immediate rise in taxation. What I’m getting at in a nutshell is that you can achieve more income, tax free and greater interest from your investments. It’s not rocket science. All you have to do is get off your sofa and ask for direction and advice. Chase Choral Society Choir Forthcoming Concerts The ever popular Mixed Voice Choir under new MD Mr George Hardy, began their winter events when they gave a concert at St Aidan’s Church in Chadsmoor on Saturday 21st November. The vibrant voices of the choir sang a mixture of modern and traditional song’s followed by a Christmas cantata, The Night The Angels Sang. The audience had the added pleasure of hearing the lovely voices of guest choir, Moorhill Children’s School Choir along with audience participation. Their next event will be held on Friday 27th November at St John’s Church Bloxwich, 7pm. The choir are also guests of The Bloxwich Community Chorus, where they will sing and perform Gilbert & Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore. Leading up to Christmas, the choir will perform a ‘Carols at Christmas Concert’ which will include a piano duet, soloists and audience participation. This will be on 5th December at St Mark’s Church, Great Wyrley, 7:30pm

Soloists and duets will also be performing. The church welcomes everyone with refreshments and a raffle. Payment will be taken at the door. New and exciting 6-a-side Football League for Penkridge There are more than £100 worth of free gifts for all teams who enter an exciting 6 a side football league which kicks off in Penkridge soon. All teams who join up before the league – which is run by Leisure Leagues, Europe’s largest provider of small sided soccer - kicks off on 7th December and will take place at Penkridge Leisure Centre every Monday. Games cost £27 and happen between the times of 8-10pm. All players will receive free shirts and shorts together with a waiving of the usual £25 registration fee. Teams will then be competing for a range of top prizes including custom made trophies – the best prize package on offer in 6 a side football. There is also a chance to play at the National 6 side championships where they will get the chance to represent Penkridge and really hit the jackpot, as last year’s winners scooped a holiday.
