Penkridge Brownies visit Animal Zone 1st and 6th Penkridge Brownies recently visited the Animal Zone at Rodbaston Campus â&#x20AC;&#x201C; South Staffordshire College. The chosen package featured a mammal encounter. The Brownies were introduced to Don and Kiera who explained about the conservation work being undertaken at Rodbaston by raising awareness of visitors and the support of endangered species. The visit started with the opportunity to see three animals close up. The first animal the Brownies encountered was a fancy rat which was quite large and which was taken around for the girls to stroke. The girls were very excited about this as none of them had seen a fancy rat before and some of them said it was their most memorable moment of the visit. The next animal was a guinea pig who the girls were allowed to hold. Dom explained all about the animals, informing the girls about their various habitats and what they ate, their likes and dislikes and how to handle and care for them. Two rabbits were next. Dom placed the giant one on the table and explained the differences between the two rabbits. Kiera took round the smaller one, whose fur felt like velvet, and the girls were allowed

the opportunity to hold it. They were closely supervised by Kiera.

Dom encouraged participation and was continuously asked questions from the Brownies. He even dealt with embarrassing and awkward questions with calm confidence.

The Brownies then had a craft session with Kiera and were supplied with all the necessary craft materials to make their own interpretation of birds. After they had eaten their packed lunches they continued their visit with a guided tour of the enclosures with Dom, where they saw other mammals, reptiles and birds. Cyrils Tearoom & Vintage Emporium Under new management Cyril’s Tearoom was opened back in March 2011 by Tracy & Ian Piper as an extension of Pipers Nursery. The name for the tearoom was chosen in dedication to the original owner and founder of the nursery, Cyril Piper. Since January this year, the tearoom has been under new management and is now ran by Paul E Bottomer. Paul and his team including Trina, Paul and Chris, offer a warm welcome and their aim is to deliver the very best level of service to customers. Since January, Paul has worked hard to transform the tearoom into a vintage emporium. It has a cosy, vintage feel where people are able to enjoy a selection of fine food in a warm, relaxed and friendly environment. ‘R’ Almost Marked the Spot – Filming the Search for Richard III Tuesday 6th October at Brewood Library, 7pm – 8:30pm

Brewood Library is hosting a fascinating presentation from Carl Vivian of Leicester University to close a day of local history activities and events at the Library as part of Staffordshire Library and Arts Service’s Local and Community History Month.

Dave’s presentation is illustrated with period artefacts and weapons, including items from the Royal Flying Corps and other Great War militaria which can be examined after the talk.

As a video producer for the University of Leicester Carl Vivian was asked to record the Search for Richard III from the moment the ground was broken at the Greyfriars site to the moment his remains left the University to be reburied at Leicester Cathedral. Carl was the first and last person to film and photograph the remains of Richard III and in this talk he shares some of the unique clips and images taken during the project. In this fascinating talk Carl Vivian picks out some of the highlights of the project, shows some behind the scenes clips that have never been broadcast and provides an update on the on-going work.
