Recent Meeting Updates Back in June we were very fortunate to have a sunny day on Saturday, 17th, when we helped

to raise money for St. Michael’s Church at the Church fete held at the Haling Dene Centre.

Our stall was ‘Guess the name of the teddy’ and

Oliver the teddy succeeded in not giving his secret

stall. Thanks go to the helpers too happily taking a turn, including Joy Higgs, also on the photo. A

total of £79 raised and there was a winner, correctly guessing Oliver’s name.

Although fraud comes in many forms, there are some simple steps you can take to protect yourself from the crime. 1. Do not give any personal information (name, address, bank details, email or phone number) to organisations or people before verifying their credentials.

2. Many frauds start with a phishing email. Remember that banks and financial institutions will not send you emails asking you to click on a link and confirm your bank details. Do not trust such emails, even if they look genuine. You can always call your bank using the phone number on a genuine piece of correspondence, website (typed directly into the address bar) or the phone book to check if you’re not sure. 3. Destroy and preferably shred receipts with your card details on and post with your name and address on. Identity fraudsters don’t need much information in order to be able to clone your identity.

4. Make sure your computer has up-to-date anti-virus software and a firewall installed. Ensure your browser is set to the highest level of security notification and monitoring to prevent malware issues and computer crimes.

U s . r F e l a D I e b y A a l P i 2 RE overs ava 5. Sign-up to Verified by Visa or MasterCard Secure Code whenever you are given the option while shopping online. This involves you registering a password with your card company and adds an additional layer of security to online transactions with signed-up retailers. 6. If you receive bills, invoices or receipts for things you haven’t bought, or financial institutions you don’t normally deal with contact you about outstanding debts, take action. Your identity may have been stolen.

7. You should regularly get a copy of your credit file and check it for entries you don’t recognise. Callcredit, Equifax, Experian, ClearScore and Noddle can all provide your credit file. An identity protection service such as ProtectMyID monitors your Experian credit report and alerts you by email or SMS to potential fraudulent activity. If it’s fraud, a dedicated caseworker will help you resolve everything.

8. Be extremely wary of post, phone calls or emails offering you business deals out of the blue. If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. Always question it. 9. If you have been a victim of fraud, be aware of fraud recovery fraud. This is when fraudsters pretend to be a lawyer or a law enforcement officer and tell you they can help you recover the money you’ve already lost.

CASS celebrates Carers this summer CASS The Carers Association have been busy celebrating Carers in the local community this summer. Carers have already enjoyed being waited on during an afternoon tea style celebration at Sandon Hall. In addition CASS will be extending their support into Eccleshall as they set up a new Carers group - CASS Café. Carers were invited to join CASS in a celebration of their dedication to their caring role in June at Sandon Hall. With entertainment provided by vocalist Debbie Miles there was plenty of singing and reminiscing during the afternoon whilst CASS members of staff and volunteers waited on serving a beautiful afternoon tea in delightful surroundings. Dementia can often lead to social isolation not only for the person living with the diagnosis but also their Carer. Over 100 families with someone currently caring for another family member or friend with dementia were present during the event.

Speaking about their day, one Carer commented “I haven’t been out for an occasion with my wife for a long time - since she was diagnosed with dementia, as she gets nervous and confused eating out in restaurants. However, we both had a great day and my wife felt quite at ease at with CASS at Sandon Hall.” CASS will be opening their brand new Carers Café in Eccleshall this September. CASS is aiming to expand their support for Carers into the area by delivering a variety of information, advice and entertainment sessions. Local Carers are invited to take the

22

opportunity to socialise with their peers, talk to health/ social care and community service providers privately and enjoy time to relax in a safe environment and make new friends. The Carers café will be held at the Community Centre, Shaws Lane, Eccleshall ST21 6JB on the last Thursday of every month between 10:30am and 12:30pm. There is no charge to attend, but there is a donation box should people wish to contribute to the continuation to the group. Light refreshments are served.

New volunteers would also be welcome to support the group. Please contact CASS on 01785 222365 for more information about CASS’s groups or for advice on your caring role. Registered charity number – 1086979. www.carersinformation.org.uk

Care and Compassion When you need it most Finding the right person to look after a member of your family when they need it most can be one of the most difficult decisions you make. Recovery from a head or brain injury, a stroke or other illness that requires rehabilitation after hospital can be a long and difficult process. The nursing team you have around you needs to be exceptional. CLCA provides registered nurses and healthcare staff of the highest calibre wherever you need them, whether that be in your home, your relative’s home or at your child’s school. These healthcare teams support clients to make the transition from hospital to home as seamless as possible for both government or privately-funded individuals. Cherry Adams, managing director of the CQC-registered company, said: “We establish and maintain care packages for both adults and children with complex medical needs. “These packages are tailored to each client, from seizure management to home ventilation, stroke recovery, brain and spinal cord injury and degenerative diseases. We also provide respite and palliative care, and our nurses can go overseas with their patients, whether that be for treatment, to visit family or just a holiday. “We put care and compassion at the heart of our operation and our reliability, experience and knowledge, and our consistency with your nursing team results in the best possible care for you and your family.” Established in 2012 CLCA also supplies nurses and other healthcare professionals to private hospitals, the NHS and nursing homes. And an online portal is now available to allow you to find the carer that is right for you - at the touch of a button. Visit carerbooking.com or ring the freephone number on 0800 999 4003.

New Event Proves Huge Success for Penkridge Market Penkridge Market have announced today that after the huge success of their first ever Children’s Market in April, they will be holding another one on the 1st of October. The new event, which was held on the 2nd of April, proved so popular with the public, the owners of the market have now decided to replicate it again at the beginning of October. The market, which was entirely dedicated to children, consisted of stall holders selling everything from nearly new children’s clothes and equipment, to toys and handmade crafts, as well as fun activities for the children, proving a huge hit with both adults and children alike. announcements as soon as we can, so keep an eye on our website.” People will be able to buy and sell nearly new children’s clothes, toys and equipment without commission, as well as new products such as handmade crafts. There will also be entertainment and local children’s clubs, groups and organisations so that families can find out more information about the services available in the local area. Kate Kingsley, who was the brain child behind the event said: “We were absolutely overwhelmed and delighted by the response we had to the event. Thousands of people attended and everyone seemed to really enjoy the day. Not only could parents find great products at amazing prices, but there was plenty to keep the children entertained as well, so it felt more like a fun day out, rather than dragging the kids around the shops. It was so well received, we’re now hoping to build on the success of the event and make it even bigger and better for October.” Market manager, Matt Williams continued: “We are looking into increasing the amount of entertainment on site, so that the children are kept busy and amused. There will still be a petting farm,

rides and children’s crafts, with hopefully a bigger fair and possibly a land train. We will make further

St Michael’s First School receive School Games Mark Award We are delighted to announce that we, St. Michaels First School, Penkridge have achieved the School Games Mark Award for the 2016/17 academic year. This is the third consecutive year that we have achieved this award. The School Games Mark is a Government led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success. Our sporting achievements this

28

year include: inter-school competitions in Tag Rugby, Tri-Golf, Cross Country, Cricket and Hockey. We were delighted once again to qualify for the level 3 County Finals in Hockey. We have been extremely proud of our pupils for their dedication to all aspects of school sport, including our year 4 sports leaders who have organised and run lunchtime activities. As part of our application, we were asked to fulfil criteria in the areas of participation, competition, workforce and clubs, and we are pleased that the hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded this year.

A special thanks goes to our PE Co-ordinator, Gaynor Sharman, for her hard work and endless enthusiasm! We look forward to applying once again in 2018!

Recipe of the month Mediterranean Fish Bake This is a great one-pan dish full of fresh flavour. Monkfish is quite pricey but the meaty flesh is delicious and bakes really well, however you can replace it with cod loin, salmon steaks or thick pieces of haddock fillet if you prefer. Serve with a green salad and warmed ciabatta bread to mop up all the lovely herb and lemon flavoured pan juices.. Ready in 50 minutes. Serves 4. • 2 tbsp olive oil (choose a good quality fruity one) • 350g small new potatoes, halved

1. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas Mark 6. Place the oil in a large non-stick roasting tin and heat in the oven for 5 minutes. Add the potatoes to the tin and toss to coat in the hot oil. Roast for 20 minutes, turning once.

• 1 red pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks

2. Add the peppers and tomatoes to the roasting tin and toss to coat in the hot oil. • 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks Make a space in the tin and add the monkfish fillets. Return the roasting tin to the • 1 green pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks oven for 10 minutes. • 225g small plum tomatoes, halved • 4 monkfish fillets (each weighing about 150g) • 50g butter, softened • Pared rind and juice from 1 small lemon, plus extra wedges to serve • 1 tbsp fresh chopped oregano • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

3. Dot the butter over the fish fillets and sprinkle over the lemon rind, juice and oregano. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and roast for a further 5-10 minutes until the fish is just cooked through and the potatoes and peppers are tender. 4. Slice each monkfish fillet and arrange with the potatoes, peppers and tomatoes on four warmed serving plates. Spoon over the pan juices and serve immediately with lemon wedges.

Tip! Replace the peppers with sliced courgettes, chunks of celery and baby button mushrooms, if liked.

FSC Investment Services Limited Just over three years ago star fund manager Neil Woodford started his own business, Woodford Investments. This follows a glittering career spanning 25 years managing Invesco Perpetual’s UK Equity Income Fund. During that time a £1,000 investment would have returned a staggering £23,000 (up to October 2013).

has a contrarian approach to some managers in his sector, he often goes in the opposite direction to his peer group, sometimes this works sometimes it doesn’t. This is why diversification is so vital.

When Woodford left Invesco Perpetual the money followed him. Three years on and Woodford is doing well his CF Woodford Equity Income fund is top of the Investment Association’s (IA) UK Equity Income fund sector since launch, having notched up a return of 39% from the 2nd June 2014 till 5th June 2017. The question this beggars is, ‘why invest anywhere else?”. The answer is simple ‘DIVERSIFICATION’. Woodfords fund had a staggering first year return of 21%, in addition certain sectors that Woodford shies away from, such as Oil, gas and mining companies have had a poor time between June 2014 and June 2015. He’s also had a few flops such as CAPITA (CPI) and NEXT (9NXT) which were two of the FTSE’s three worst performing shares in 2016. Looking ahead Neil’s funds should continue to do well, he

INDEPENDENT

In the same way that Woodfords researchers scour the market for the ‘drivers’ that move the markets in certain directions, we here at FSC Investment Services Limited adopt a very similar approach, we research the wholesale fund managers, we look at their stock holdings, we look at their track records, we consider the market they operate in. Our task is to manage and blend the different managers and their individual styles to present you with a portfolio that will hopefully prosper in all weathers. So far we have done this exceptionally well and with my team of experts we hope this continues. Please note that the value of investments can go down as well as up and you may not get back the full amount you initially invested. Stafford RDA It’s what you can do that counts Riding for the disabled is a nationwide charity

which helps make a real difference to the lives of

disabled children & adults. RDA has 500 volunteer groups throughout the UK. Together the groups

provide opportunities for therapy, achievement and enjoyment, improving health, wellbeing and self-confidence and benefiting mobility and co-ordination.

I am writing on behalf of Stafford RDA to hopefully encourage more people to offer their valuable free time to volunteering for this rewarding charity. Stafford RDA held its first ride in April 1975 and recently celebrated its 40 anniversary. Nearly 40 children and adults enjoy rides each week from one of our 7 sessions. Most of our rides take place at Ingestre Stables, Stafford whilst one ride is held at Dunston Heath stables. We cater for a wide range of disabilities and rely heavily on our team of dedicated volunteers. There are different volunteering roles within the RDA

Rugeley Fireplaces & Stoves Rugeley Fireplaces was opened in 1989. Owners Emma and Darren work alongside Julie and Kath. Between them they have 74 years combined experience in the fireplace industry. Emma helps clients design their perfect fireplace. She is also a chimney system/flue specialist (problem solver). Customers visit Emma with a vision of their dream fireplace and she somehow figures out how they can get what they want - or as close as possible - while keeping the design true, within the discussed budget and fire safety constraints. She gives her time freely and is always happy to help “come up with a plan”. Rugeley Fireplaces is situated in the centre of Rugeley, (which was found to be the friendliest town in England in 2009 by secret shoppers). Google maps provides perfect sat-nav directions to the car park which backs onto the main entrance to the shop. Rugeley Fireplaces are the only local stockist of solid fuel bars, ash pans, grates, fires and specialist cleaners. Kath’s experience is unrivalled in this field. They stock stove spares – rope, glass, paint, buckets, guards, potato cookers – you name it they probably have it!

September 2017

Having spent many years cultivating relationships with their “gold dust” fitters and suppliers, Rugeley Fireplaces is not a company who just stocks the latest fad – Emma and Darren prefer products designed to last, in fact, some products have a cast iron 25 year guarantee! While most of Rugeley Fireplaces and Stoves sales come from existing customers (moving house) and recommendations, they don’t just appeal to the older generations. Some of the latest technology available can be seen at Rugeley Fireplaces & Stoves. They have Surefire – the most efficient flued gas fire in the world and the Firecube Launde which is the most efficient wood burning stove in the world, on show. They have LED touchflame electric fires and the latest log effect gas fires on show. They also have the Jotul F105 which is already SIA eco-design ready for clean burning regulations not due in until 2022. The future is already here at Rugeley Fireplaces & Stoves! Visit the showroom at 41 Albion Street, Rugeley, WS15 2BY or call one of the friendly team on 01889 574022. Website: www.rugeleyfireplaces.net www.facebook.com/RugeleyFireplacesltd/

Two Staffordshire Women receive national honour for Alzheimer’s Support Group Two Staffordshire women who established a support group network that helps hundreds of people every

month have been recognised with a national honour. Daphne Sharp, and Elaine Dunlop, both of Stafford, have been given a British Citizen Award for their services to the community.

The British Citizen Awards (BCAs) were launched in

January 2015, to recognise exceptional individuals who

work tirelessly and selflessly to make a positive impact on society. BCAs are awarded twice annually, and recognise

‘everyday’ people whose achievements may otherwise be overlooked.

Daphne, aged 67, and Elaine, aged 62, established Monthly Alzheimer’s Support Evenings (MASE), in 2009 following

the death of Daphne’s 61-year-old brother, who had lived

with the debilitating condition. Elaine had also lost her mum in 2007, following several years with dementia. As both had

personal experience of being carers, they decided to set up the group to offer help and advice to friends and relatives

Hednesford Town Girls have successful first season! Hednesford Town Girls have enjoyed a very successful first season. Our Under 14’s team finished the season as league winners, local tournament winners and relished the chance to travel to Barcelona to play international football finishing as group winners. Meanwhile our Under 12’s team also finished the season as league winner. They also won the Staffordshire FA Cup Trophy and travelled to Cheshire to compete; this time finishing as runners up. We are looking to kick off the 2017/18 football season with a newly formed Under 11’s team. We are looking for girls who start school year 5 or 6 in September 2017. No previous experience is necessary but if you already play and fancy a new challenge then come along and join us. We train on a Tuesday night 6-7pm at Cardinal Griffin High School, Cannock and league games are played on Saturdays.
