can socialise and learn together. “It is a safe place for some and a place where students are able to excel more through the support of staff. In one school day, up to 100 students use our library because it is open from 8am until 5pm. We cannot thank Persimmon Homes enough for their support in helping local youngsters.”

The builder, which has its headquarters in Wolverhampton, is building Lyne Hill Meadow in the town, a collection of two, three and four-bedroom homes. Stephen Cleveley, director-in-charge for Persimmon Homes West Midlands, said: “We strongly believe in supporting the communities where we build. Therefore, we are delighted to be able to support Wolgarston High School in this way and help local youngsters strive to achieve their academic goals.”

Mr Cleveley added that they receive many worthy applications every month, and urged charities who had not been successful to apply again. To nominate and to find out about the terms and conditions people can visit www.persimmonhomes.com/charity

Staff and pupils at the school have been working hard to raise money to buy new books for the library as part of their fundraising work, with money raised also going to good causes such as Cancer Research UK and Comic Relief. Learning Resources Centre Administrator Sarah Roberts said: “Our library is an extended learning hub for our students. It is a place where students of different backgrounds and abilities

Staffordshire children set to learn life saving skills in nation’s biggest first aid lesson St John Ambulance, the nation’s leading first aid charity is calling on primary schools across Staffordshire to get involved in the Big First Aid Lesson 2017 on Friday 3rd November. Hosted by BAFTA winning ‘Secret Life of Boys’ star, Reece Buttery, the hour-long programme will be streamed live into classrooms across the country free of charge and will cover a range of first aid topics, with particular emphasis on burns and firework related injuries. how important first aid can be in an emergency,’ said Reece. ‘We know schools are time-pressed but the Big First Aid Lesson Live is free, easy to join, and could help to save a life. We hope teachers everywhere sign their classes up and get involved.’ The only equipment schools need to take part is an internet connection and a screen for their pupils to watch in the classroom or during assembly. This year’s Big First Aid Lesson is aimed at primary school students and is timed perfectly to make sure the children have an awareness of the dangers of Bonfire Night, and what to do in the event of an accident. There will also be live demos, incredible real life stories, chances for students to ask questions, and other interactive elements. The charity is urging teachers to sign up online at www.sja.org.uk/bigfirstaidlesson to help meet its aim of teaching a quarter of a million students vital life saving skills. Reece is following in the footsteps of ITV This Morning’s Dr Ranj who presented the lesson to thousands of students and teachers in 2016 and will make a guest appearance this year.

St John Ambulance’s national training delivery manager schools, David Nicklen said: ‘The Big First Aid Lesson Live is an accessible, easy to learn, and fun resource - students will finish the lesson feeling confident they could one day be a life saver. ‘I encourage all schools to take part so their pupils don’t miss out on this exciting and educational event.’ To sign up your school to the Big First Aid Lesson Live, or for more information visit www.sja.org.uk/bigfirstaidlesson

Halloween and Bonfire Night Staffordshire Police

The festivities around Halloween and bonfire night are always good fun but it is also a time to make sure that children are kept safe. Not all adults enjoy Halloween and it can be quite frightening for people who are older or more vulnerable. Younger children taking part in Trick or Treat activities should always be supervised by an adult to keep them safe and to prevent them distressing people who do not want to take part. Only call on friends, family or neighbours - ideally this should be arranged in advance. Make sure all children can be seen as it gets dark. Have each child carry or wear something lit, such as light up shoes, a flashlight, glow bracelet or necklace, or flashing attire to be seen on a dark Halloween night. Whilst recognising and celebrating history on Bonfire Night it is important to remember that fireworks, although fun to watch, can cause serious injury and damage. Bonfires can quite easily get out of control. The highest number of firework related injuries happen at family or private parties. It is safer to attend an organised event that follows the firework code and have trained people on hand to alleviate any dangers.

Every Journey Starts with a Single Step! “Learning to Nordic Walk was great fun. It has given me, the opportunity to make new friends, with the benefits of increased fitness and energy levels and the opportunity to explore new parts of Cannock Chase. I would recommend you try it” Pam, Brereton “Nordic Walking has changed my attitude towards exercise. I love the Walks with Simon and will attempt any of the challenges set with increased confidence. My fitness levels have improved and I can now get to the top of all the hills without stopping, I could not have done this 10 months ago” – Diane, Penkridge. “I started walking with Simon in Nov 16, since then my fitness has really improved and all his challenges are adapted for all levels of fitness. The social side is fantastic and have now met many new friends who have joined either on their own or with friend or partner” - Kath, Penkridge.

Nordic Walking is an enhancement of ordinary walking but burns 46% more calories whilst improving posture and general movements. Chase Nordic Walking has now been going just under a year and the club continues to grow each week. After 22 years in the Military working alongside physiotherapists as an Exercise Rehabilitation Instructor, exercising in this environment really suits my unique skill set. We exercise using the benches, trees, bridges and hills (oh, we do like a hill!) but all done in a very safe, fun and friendly way.

22

A few things that will happen when you start Nordic Walking with us: 1. You will get to know the Chase, why should you limit yourself to the same walk because you either don’t know the area or feel unsafe to do it on your own. 2. You will feel great for the rest of the day and sleep better. 3. You will have great conversations with friendly people and make new friends. 4. You will find yourself downloading fitness apps because you want to start measuring your distances and improvements. 5. You will experience the changing seasons and witness the true magic of Cannock Chase.

FAQ: “Why would you want to pay someone to take you walking?” A: Come to a free 45-minute taster and you will see and feel why! For more information visit www.chasenordicwalking.co.uk

Penkridge Runners win Best “Run Together” Group Award! Penkridge Runners win the Best “Run Together” Group Award in the West Midlands for 2017. The winner of this award was selected by England Athletics following a strict nomination process. The successful nomination was put forward by Carly Breeze. Carly, an original member of the group, recently sent the following message to her team mates...”I just wanted to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for giving me a group of not only friends, but people I can consider family. Your dedication and hard work every week, enabled me to relay my passion for the club to the judges at England Athletics. I am so proud of myself and everyone in the club for this achievement.

The results over the years have spoken for themselves with many members completing their first ever race before incredibly progressing to an enduring 26.2 miles... a full marathon which prior to joining the club they had considered this to beyond their wildest dreams. Many members have smashed their personal best achievements since joining the club. Martin, 56 says “The success of the club is a result of the fantastic group of people who are committed and support each other week in week out.

Penkridge Runners was initiated 3 years ago by Martin Leek (Coach LiRF) who was keen to share his knowledge and passion for the sport with others . The group caters for both beginners & experienced runners through the England Athletics “Run Together” programme. For the beginners it is a chance to get fit and join a group of like-minded people of the same ability, with the option of running their first ever 5k, 10k, Half or even full marathon. For the experienced runners it is the challenge of increasing their endurance, speed and overall fitness; this is achieved through individual training plans aimed at improving performance and helping them become the best they can be at their chosen distance.

24

To say that I am proud of our achievements would be an understatement and this award is simply the icing on the cake that the members so deserve. www.penkridgerunners.co.uk

FSC Investment Services Limited If we accept that as ‘creatures of habit’ we just don’t do things like change our energy suppliers, move our mortgages or move bank accounts, even when there is a glaring saving to be made. The reasons we don’t move are that we perceive that to go through all the kerfuffle of changing and replacing the service we had it’s more trouble than its worth, or as I suspect it may also be a simple case of human lethargy!! It is for this reason and a few others, I have struggled to rationalise why more people don’t use the services of a financial adviser and wealth adviser more easily. In the interests of trying to encourage more people to consider this, let me explain a bit more about the services we provide and the benefits we bring to potential clients affairs. Our purpose in life is simple, we show you how to make money or save money on tax. We need to demonstrate to our potential new client there is a good reason for using us. We are able to achieve this by following a very simple four-step program. Step one is (where am I now?) completing a full and comprehensive review of the person’s current affairs. Step two (where do I want to go?) we prepare an action plan which gives the potential client a menu of steps which are carefully structured to make all areas of the clients affairs more efficient and where profitable a higher potential for gaining better returns. Step three (reviewing and maintaining the plans) we offer a regular six monthly

INDEPENDENT

review meeting, this meet is an opportunity to review our initial fund choices, to make sure we are totally on track to achieve our objectives and to see what may be needed financially for the clients cash flow for the next six months. Step four (an annual review to establish where we are now?) this review is our opportunity to fully review our process and to measure our progress against agreed benchmarks and to make sure that our action plan is fully on track to achieve the successes we have aimed for. Behind the scenes we have our own in-house research and Para-planning team. We are constantly researching the markets and looking at up and coming funds; we do our research using state of the art technology and bespoke software computer programs. The unique way we do this I believe gives us a huge experience advantage and our research gives us tremendous insight to where we want to position our portfolios and be aware of the driving forces which create the growth in our market areas. I would welcome the opportunity to talk to you, there’s no obligation to do business, all we ask is you give us the time to show you what can be achieved and how simple making real improvements can be made to your financial affairs. The Monckton Recreation Centre changes its name! So why are we doing this and where did it all start? Many years ago Major Reginald Monckton bought from the Hatherton’s approximately 6 acres of grass fields without any buildings in Pinfold Lane Penkridge, and let this to his tenant Sid Williams for cattle grazing. During the late 1960’s he let Penkridge FC use it for regular weekend football and on Easter Mondays in 1967, 68 & 69, for the Penkridge Charity Cup. The cows on the land were moved to the rear fields whilst these games were played, watched by several hundred people. In 1970 the Monckton Recreation Centre, an independent Trust was formed by purchasing the land from and with the support of Major Monckton with the same aim & objects as continue today. “For the purpose of social welfare, recreation, the advancement of amateur sport, and leisure activities with the object of improving the lives of local inhabitants.” The original Charity number was L/859, however the Charity Commission renumbered everything in 1990 it was numbered: 522710. But, that’s not all of it… Over the years: a) The recreational area has been enlarged by the purchase of 9 acres to a total of 14.5 of adjacent fields. Hedges were removed, several drainage schemes implemented and areas levelled, grass seeded or turfed. b) A permanent building was built in 1975-77 containing a main Hall (large room with a bar), kitchen, toilets, changing rooms, shower room, upstairs lounge with a bar, balcony(fantastic sunsets from the bar). The end wall of the main Hall was intended as temporary structure with the intention of providing a suitable extension. c) Three tennis courts were laid several years ago. d) A large car park with lighting and CCTV.

So why are we changing our name? The Monckton Recreation Centre is constituted by Deed of Trust and is a registered charity. The Trust Property is Private Property and the general management and control for its use are vested in the Management Committee. During the year the meetings of the Management Committee mainly concentrate on improvements, refurbishments, maintenance, usage, finances and administration of the Sports & Recreation Centre. And the Name - An Act of parliament in April 2011 promoted guidance for better governance of charities and the UK Charities Commission set up a new form of legal entity designed for non-profit organisations like ours in the UK called Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO).

f) and an Agreement was made with Penkridge Parish Council for the current usage and equipment on the skate park.

We applied for this status shortly after but were informed only new charities were being set up at that time, and it would be several years before it was ready – now they are – and we are all set up under the new Registered Charity Number of ‘1165608’. With modern day technology many people are searching on their mobile phone and using key words, like “Penkridge”, “Sports”, “recreation centre” and using facebook or other social media – and so that’s what we’ve done. You can see “Penkridge Sports & Recreation Centre(Monckton)” on facebook – and book any of our facilities through emails or check us out on social media.

Currently we play host to a wide variety of users; Outside we have rugby, many local football teams, skateboarding, Petanque(outdoor bowls), tennis, collation and release of pigeons to/from Barcelona, and inside we have Aerobics,

We need lots of volunteers to help with the running of YOUR local Recreation Centre Charity so please get in touch if you fancy putting something back into your community.

e) A lease was taken out with the Staffordshire County Council (Highways) who provided a tarmac car and cycle park on our land adjacent to the railway with pedestrian access to the station and vehicular access via our main gate to relieve locals from the ever-expanding parking issues.

Recipe of the month Chilli Chicken Stew With Halloween at the end of the month, why not plan a ghostly gathering and serve up this hot and spicy chicken stew? Perfect for filling up hungry trick or treaters!

Ingredients • 1-2 tbsp sunflower oil • 1 large onion, peeled and cut into chunks • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 1 small red chilli pepper, deseeded and finely chopped (optional) • 6 large skinless chicken fillets, cut into pieces • 2 x 400g can chopped tomatoes • 2 tbsp sun-dried tomato puree • 2 tsp dried oregano

1. Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a large, deep flameproof casserole and fry the onion and garlic for 5 minutes until softened and golden. Add the chilli pepper (if using) and chicken pieces and cook over a medium heat, stirring all the time, until the chicken pieces are lightly browned all over, adding a little extra oil if needed. 2. Stir in the tomatoes, tomato puree, oregano and 200ml water and bring to the boil. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper then reduce the heat, partially cover and simmer for 40 minutes, stirring occasionally. 3. Add the kidney beans and diced peppers to the casserole and simmer, uncovered, for a further 20-25 mins until the peppers are tender and some of the liquid has reduced. Serve in mugs or bowls with chunks of warm crusty bread.

• 1 x 400g can kidney beans in chilli sauce • 1 red, 1 green and 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and diced • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Warm crusty bread, to serve

38

Tip! For a hot non-alcoholic punch to serve with the stew, pour a large carton of apple juice into a saucepan. Core and slice 2 small apples and add to the pan with one thinly sliced lemon and a couple of cinnamon sticks. Heat gently for about 10 minutes, then pour in 1 litre of ginger ale. Heat through for a further minute then serve in heatproof glasses or tumblers. www.thepenkridgeadvertiser.co.uk | 01785 318619

Farm Prepares for First Ever Pumpkin Crop The owners of Canalside Farm, near Stafford are beginning to get very excited, as they prepare for the harvest of their first ever pumpkin crop. The family-run Farm, which is most famous for its delicious strawberries, have been growing their own produce for over 30 years, but have never grown pumpkins before. In May this year, they decided to plant a staggering 1,500 pumpkins, for visitors to pick and enjoy in time for the Halloween season. Chris Barton, owner of the Farm, said: “We are very excited about our first ever pumpkin crop and hope that people will come and enjoy this new ‘pick your own’ experience as well as the activities we have planned over the Halloween period. The cooks in our café have also been thinking of ways in which they can incorporate pumpkins on the menu and have come up with various dishes such as pumpkin pie, soup and even pumpkin cupcakes! I’ve been out to the field this morning and the pumpkins are beginning to ripen nicely, so we’re hoping that we might even have some in time to launch our new pumpkin cupcakes for National Cupcake Week which starts on the 18th September.” Pumpkin plants usually give a yield of 2-3 pumpkins per plant, so the Farm could see a harvest of as many as 4,500! But as it’s their first year, they are predicting a more conservative number of 2,000. Cannock Friends of St Giles Cannock Friends of St Giles were delighted to receive a cheque for ÂŁ1,000 from the Rotary Club of Cannock recently. President Cliff Shore made the presentation to Trish Mellor, treasurer of Cannock Friends group; the money was raised at the Golf Day held earlier in the year. Trish thanked President Cliff, Immediate Past President Harold and members of the Rotary Club for again supporting Cannock Friends of St Giles. She told them that the money would be used within the Phoenix Project, a bereavement service for children and young people. So many children suffer the loss of a parent, grandparent or sibling and struggle to deal with that loss. Leading a child through grief and bereavement is highly specialised; this is what the Phoenix Project offers. It is available to any child or young person within the St Giles catchment area, regardless of how and where that loss occurred - in other words, there does not have to have been a connection with St Giles, the service is open to anyone who needs it.

L to R: Trish Mellor, Cliff Shore and Harold Bould

www.stgileshospice.com and about the work of the Rotary Club of Cannock at www.cannockrotary.co.uk St Giles continues to offer a host of services: in-patient care, day patient and out-patient care, Hospice at Home, bereavement counselling - and so much more. The people of Cannock are always incredibly generous in their support of all that the local group of friends of St Giles does and that support is very much appreciated.

The collection is organised by the local District of Rotary International and takes place on the two days following the V Festival. This year, as in previous years, so much was left behind by the those who attended the Festival which, if it can be collected, can be used by people at home and overseas. No matter how many volunteers go along they are never able to collect all of the items left behind. This year 5 Soroptimists from SI Cannock & District went along to help with the grand ‘clear-up’ at Weston Park following another very successful, but rather muddy, V Festival. Wearing wellies and other appropriate clothing, members set to work dismantling and re-packing tents, rolling up air beds, collecting

The V Festival clear-up is a true example of voluntary organisations working together and giving service to help others. Everyone who went along thoroughly enjoyed the experience - even though they are always shocked at what others will leave behind -and they know that all of the goods will be put to excellent use by those who need them. Angels Watching Over Me

A weekend of events run by Penkridge Methodist Church

Penkridge is preparing for a visitation from angels! By the time you read this article, you may have spotted angels beginning to appear all over the village and are wondering what on earth these are for. Well, they are both a gift from the church for people to take home as well as being an invitation to join in the events which are taking place at Penkridge Methodist Church. The church is hosting a whole weekend of events beginning on the 27th October celebrating angels, those with or without wings!

Working in partnership with ‘A Child of Mine’, a local charity supporting bereaved parents, the church will host a memorial service for children who have died, babies born sleeping and babies lost through miscarriage or termination, whatever the reason. The church will be open all day for private reflection and the memorial service itself will begin at 6.30pm on the 27th October. This is the first of what is planned to be an annual event in the village.

booking via the Facebook page or from the minister deaconsueculver@gmail.com. Costs for the supper are £5 per head or £15 for a family of four. On Sunday 29th October, we open for all age worship at 10.30am with the Rev Rachel Parkinson leading our worship on the theme of angels. All are welcome to join in.

The events on Saturday 28th October will include a ‘Crafternoon’ - an afternoon of angel themed crafts for all the family (including pumpkin carving, stone painting and Angel Christmas decorations) whilst enjoying a cup of coffee and a slice of cake served by the air cadets from the 2415(Penkridge) ATC Squadron. Admission is free to the Crafternoon although donations are welcome to cover the costs of craft materials. The cadets are running a car wash on the church car park and a cake stall to raise funds for their mini-bus appeal as well as selling poppies for the annual Poppy Appeal. On Saturday evening, there is an awards supper for the angels in our community who have not yet got their wings – a celebration of those who give so much to the community but who are sometimes overlooked. Everyone is invited to nominate someone who they think is a community angel and the nominations form can be found on the Penkridge Methodist Church Facebook page. The supper will be simple – pie and peas, a dessert and a drink and tickets are available by
