Local Penkridge Residents Complete GR20 Corsica Challenge Penkridge residents, Rick Cuthbert from

diagonally from north to south and is described as ‘the toughest long distance trail in Europe’.

Local Pharmacist Cycles 125 Miles in aid of Fight Bladder Cancer Local Penkridge resident, Peter Prokopa has recently cycled 125 miles around South Staffordshire’s Local Pharmacy Committee area for Fight Bladder Cancer, in aid of his predecessor at the LPC who is currently fighting the disease.

Fight Bladder Cancer provide support and fund research to make a difference for those affected.

Peter decided to take on this challenging ride as a result of his predecessor suffering from bladder cancer and South Staffs LPC agreeing to support Fight Bladder Cancer in 2016.

The LPC are hoping to raise awareness of the condition, both within our local pharmacies and also with the general public - along the way 18

Splatter Dash Success!

September saw the return of one of our most colourful and vibrant fundraising events – Splatter Dash! Starting in their brightest whites, 300 participants, including local MP for Stafford Jeremy Lefroy, ran, skipped, crawled and danced their way through the messy 3km splatter gauntlet on Stafford Common, getting covered in all the colours of the rainbow as they passed through the splatter stations!

Events Fundraiser, Lisa Carson said “The Splatter Dash was an absolutely fantastic occasion. The atmosphere was electric as hundreds of hospice supporters came together and embraced the colour! Thank you to all came along and took part in the event, to our army of volunteers who gave up their time to help the event run smoothly, and to Stan Robinson Ltd, Traction, Stone Radio, Paul Milgate-Scarrott, La Patisserie and the Staffordshire University Caterers for providing their services free of charge.”

This is our third year of running the event and once all of the sponsorship money is in, we are hoping to have raised a minimum of £10,000 that will go towards providing free care for people in our community who are suffering life-limiting illness.

Cancer Research UK Launches Challenging Running Event at Cannock Chase: TOUGH 10 Cancer Research UK are excited to announce a brand new series of 10k running events taking place across some of the UKs most challenging terrain. The adrenaline packed ‘Tough 10’ events promise to push endurance levels to the limit as participant’s brave the elements.

Cannock Chase will be home to one of the events that see runners face nature’s forces alone in this no obstacles challenge. The event is all about credible running and will pitch participants against thigh-burning hills, muddy declines and uneven rocky landscape. Every hill conquered and every penny raised goes towards pioneering research, helping people affected by cancer right now.

Lucy Morton, Marketing Manager at Cancer Research UK said “we are extremely excited to be launching this brand new event in an iconic Staffordshire location. The event is definitely not for people to be aiming for a new PB. Age UK project finishes third in National Awards Age UK South Staffordshire Project, Children

Matter is delighted to have finished third in the

2016 National Lottery Awards. The annual National Lottery Awards search to find the UK’s

favourite Lottery-funded projects and the winners will be presented with their trophy at a ceremony in London this weekend which will be broadcast on BBC1.

“We were extremely proud to be chosen as

finalists this year in the education category” said

Project Organiser, Lisa Hibbert, “To finish third in the

UK is an amazing achievement. Our wonderful team of volunteers dedicate themselves to helping out in local primary schools and this is fantastic national recognition for all they do!”

The intergenerational project recruits volunteers over the age of 50 to help out in schools by listening to

children read. Older volunteers are able to share their

skills and life experiences with the younger generation and also provide general classroom help. The

volunteers benefit from an enhanced sense of purpose

and community which, reduces or prevents their sense of isolation and increases confidence and wellbeing.

The children benefit from an older role model providing the extra help they need.

Prevention Manager, Rob Bruce explained

“Funding by The Big Lottery Fund has really helped

us by providing resources to recruit, train and support our team of volunteers. We have recruited over 120

volunteers who help out in 48 schools across southern Staffordshire, including South Staffs, Stafford,

Cannock, Lichfield, Tamworth and Burton on Trent and are now looking to expand to cover the North Staffordshire area.”

Recipe of the month Meatball Pasta These delicious homemade meatballs are flavoured with olives and basil then cooked in a rich and lightly spiced tomato sauce. Serve with spaghetti for a classic Italian supper or for a change pile on top of boiled rice or steamed couscous.

Serves 4 - ready in 50 minutes.

400g (14oz) minced beef or lamb 1 tbsp pitted black olives, chopped 2 tbsp fresh chopped basil 1 red onion, peeled and finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed

1. Place the minced beef or lamb, olives, basil and half the chopped onion and crushed garlic in a food processor. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper and process until the mixture is almost smooth. Shape into about 28 small meatballs and chill for 30 minutes.

2. Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and fry the meatballs for 3-4 mins until browned all over, stirring frequently. Remove the meatballs with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper.

1 tbsp olive oil 500g carton passatta (sieved tomatoes) 1-2 tsp harissa paste (see tip) 1 tsp sugar 400g (14oz) spaghetti Fresh basil leaves, to garnish

3. Add the rest of the onion and garlic to the pan and fry for 5 mins. Pour in the passatta and add the harissa paste and sugar. Bring to the boil. Add the meatballs and 150ml (1/4pt) water and simmer for 30 mins.

4. Cook the spaghetti in a large pan of salted water for 12-14 mins or according to the packet instructions. Drain well and divide between four serving plates. Season the meatball sauce to taste then spoon over the spaghetti. Serve garnished with basil leaves.

TIP! Harissa paste is a fiery blend of chillies and spices often used in North African cookery. You’ll find it near the herbs and spices section in most supermarkets but if unavailable add a pinch of crushed dried chillies instead.

Exciting Changes for Penkridge Victorian Christmas Market Penkridge Business Association have announced today that they will be making new and exciting changes to the Victorian Christmas Market this year, in order to make it more family-friendly.

The Christmas event which is normally held on a Friday evening at Penkridge Market, will now be held on a Sunday between 2pm and 8pm, in the hope that this will be a more suitable time for families with young children.

Matt Williams, Manager of Penkridge Market said: “The Victorian Christmas Market is our busiest event of the year and always attracts thousands of people.

But we realised that for families with small children, the timing of the event may be quite late and as there is so much for young children to enjoy, we wanted to ensure it was tailored to suit their needs.

So for the first time this year we will be moving the event to Sunday 27th November, from 2pm – 8pm.”

Not all adults enjoy Halloween and it can be quite frightening for people who are older or more vulnerable.

Younger children taking part should always have an adult nearby, to keep them safe and to stop them distressing people who do not want to take part. All children should have fun but always respecting other people in the community.

It is better for children to stay in groups and wear light-coloured clothing, making sure they can be seen. They should only visit homes of people they know.

Whilst recognising and celebrating history on Bonfire Night it is important to remember that fireworks, although fun to watch, can cause serious injury and damage. Bonfires can quite easily get out of control. The highest number of firework related injuries happen at family or private parties.

It is safer to attend an organised event that follows the firework code and have trained people on hand to alleviate any dangers.

Don’t forget your pets. Keep them indoors and turn up the TV or music volume to distract firework noise.

South Staffordshire College’s ‘Futures@SSC’ Independent Learning Centre wins prestigious LABC Award South Staffordshire College’s ‘Futures@SSC’

Independent Learning Centre has been named

winner of the ‘Best Inclusive Building’ category in the prestigious West Midlands Region LABC Building Excellence Awards.

Located on the College’s 180 hectare rural Rodbaston estate, this purpose built facility opened it’s doors in 2015 and enables young people aged 16-25 with complex learning needs to access specialist education and training within Staffordshire. Home to a sensory space, independent skills suite, preparation for work area and giant interactive tablet computer, the centre was designed to cater for learners with a range of needs and disabilities including Autism spectrum disorders, Down’s Syndrome, William’s Syndrome, Fragile X Syndrome and sensory impairments.

Having been crowned winners of the ‘Best Inclusive Building’ Category at an awards ceremony which was held at the Molineux Stadium in Wolverhampton on Friday 9th September, the Futures@SSC development will now be entered into the National Finals, where the development will compete against some of the finest buildings throughout the UK.

The innovative space, which was designed by architects Maber and constructed by local business Fords of Blythe Bridge was designed to reflect the rich heritage and rural history of the College’s Rodbaston Campus, while utilising modern methods of construction and sustainable materials such as cedar cladding. P.A.C.E 2000 invites the over 50’s to their next Open Meeting Join the local P.A.C.E 2000 group for their Open Meeting on Friday 21st October at 1:15pm at the Haling Dene Centre (Room 16) in Penkridge.

The afternoon will close with refreshments.

P.A.C.E 2000 Charity was set up to advance the education of people aged 50 and over, by raising their awareness of healthy living through topics of general interest and the benefits of exercise.

The sessions aim to prevent or reduce the risk of loss of independence and mobility, and improve the quality of life for older people living in South Staffordshire. Meetings offer an exercise element, speakers on a variety of topics (health, diet, social and recreational) and close with refreshments.

Exercise is subject to a satisfactory health assessment.

South Staffordshire Council will be  starting new gymnastics classes for children on Sunday mornings from September 2016. There are classes for children 6x9cm aged 5-7 at 10:30am and for age 8+ at 11:30am.

The classes are being run by coaches from Wolverhampton gymnastics club, with children working towards proficiency awards from British Gymnastics.
