St Michaels Church Penkridge Christmas Tree Festival 6th December - 12th December Following on from the huge success of last
year’s Christmas Tree Festival at St Michael’s
Church, Penkridge, it already seems that after only one year it has become one of the villages’ best loved annual events!
Organisations, businesses and the local community are already supporting the
initiative resulting in nearly doubling the amount of trees on display, decorating them in a vast
array of styles and themes portraying what our
local community is all about. To compliment this year’s extension of the Christmas Tree
Festival, the festive fun begins on Wednesday 6th December right through to the following
Tuesday when the Salvation Army will round

Autumn Adventures at Dunston Pre-school Playgroup The children at Dunston Pre-school Playgroup have been enjoying the autumn season with fun in the woods. They put on their wellington boots, collected their bikes, cars and wheelbarrows from the toy shed and headed off down the field to the wood. The children collected and counted apples and leaves of all colours in the wheelbarrow. Some of the older children took on a slightly bigger challenge of climbing to explore things higher up the tree. The children practised their skills on the balance bikes rolling down the hill and the younger children scooted around the trees in the cars. On the way back into playgroup for a well earned snack we stopped to offer the
8
chickens some grass. Another very busy and fun morning was enjoyed by everyone at Playgroup. Dunston Pre-school Playgroup is held in Dunston village hall and takes children from the age of two – five years. We have four qualified and very dedicated members of staff. The Playgroup is set in a beautiful rural location giving us the opportunity to offer children some great outdoor experiences. In June we received a Good rating from Ofsted. Parents comments include:-
“Dunston Playgroup is a magical place where children learn and explore” “Dunston Playgroup is like a little family, a very special place. I couldn’t of wished for a better start for my little girl” For more information about Dunston Pre-school Playgroup visit www.dunstonplaygroup.co.uk or check out our Facebook page. Penkridge Middle School at Walsall FC Year 6 students from Penkridge Middle School (along with two friends from Year 7 at Cannock chase High School) enjoyed a fun day of football on Saturday when they had the opportunity to act as ball boys for Walsall Football club’s League 1 match v Blackpool at the Banks’s Stadium.
The day began with a training session and match on the astroturf pitch lead by coaches from Walsall’s Community team and, following a briefing and practice, the children, led out by captain Shaun Sutcliffe welcomed the teams onto the field and spent 90 minutes helping the game run smoothly. Prior to the game there was an extra surprise as the game had visitors from the Much Wenlock Olympic Society and the children had the opportunity to hear a brief presentation and hold an Olympic torch from London 2012. Once the game kicked off, everyone enjoyed an excellent afternoon in beautiful sunshine helping with a very closely contested game which saw Walsall take the lead with a superb free kick before being pegged back to eventually draw 1-1 in front of a crowd of over 4500. They had a very close view of the goals, the key
12
moments and everyone had at least one touch of the ball with some having considerably more. At the end of the game the children were congratulated by Walsall Community director Adam Davy for their terrific enthusiasm and behaviour. A signed Walsall ball was awarded to Rafe Whitehouse for showing a terrific attitude and effort attitude, something he will no doubt remember as he is a huge football fan. All of the children who took part are looking forward to returning to the stadium in December to be ball boys and again when Walsall entertain Scunthorpe, hopefully in a high position in the league if the crucial point on Saturday helps them move upwards.

Wolgarston High School
Macmillan Coffee Morning Fundraiser Wolgarston High School took part in its annual MacMillan coffee morning fundraiser event. This year our students and staff showed their support by hosting two coffee mornings. On Friday 29th September Our Library sold a selection of homemade and store bought Fairtrade cupcakes and cookies. This was done at break time and at lunch time. Our Sixth Form took part too holding their own pop up cake shop in the Sixth Form Centre. Flavours ranged from Sicilian lemon to vanilla dark chocolate with marshmallows. “It is brilliant to be part of this event and as always we could not done it without the help of Mrs Beach and her Year 9 students,” said Miss Roberts (Learning Resources Centre Administrator), “The amount of support we received was amazing, in total we sold over 150 cakes and cookies between both locations.” Student helpers on the day were Kiera Hope (Year 12), Davina Dickinson (Year 12), Sophie Moseley (Year 13), Michael Craney (Year 13), Toni Dadd (Year 11) and Martha Ryles (Year 11).
The Year 9 students who made the cookies decided to pay £1 each to buy one of their own cookies because they smelt so good. “The cookies were amazing,” said Alfie Hibbs (Year 10), “I love it when we do things like this in school it is fun.” Students and staff at Wolgarston High School are dedicated to supporting cancer research and support.
“Together we have made a great contribution this week to say ‘ We will help to beat this’!” said Mrs Beach.
“We would like to thank our Year 9 Food Technology students who decided to make a variety of cookies for the Macmillan Charity in their lesson this week,” said Mrs Beach (Teacher of Design and Technology).

A huge thank you to Davina Dickson and Kiera Hope for taking photographs of our event.

New luxury retirement development due to open show apartments in Stafford Stafford town will play host to a brand-new development of luxury independent living apartments from specialist developer, Adlington. Due to complete in February 2018, the new development will comprise 55 one, two and three bedroom luxury apartments for over 65s looking to downsize yet retain their independence. Luxury accommodation At Brooklands House there is no need to compromise on style and luxury in later life as each of the spacious private apartments offer modern, fully-fitted kitchens and generous living areas. Many feature en-suite shower rooms and separate bathrooms and most have walk on balconies or a patio area overlooking beautifully landscaped gardens. In addition, the building will host a table service restaurant, which will offer breakfast and lunch daily, a hairdressing salon, assisted spa and therapy room, activities room, guest suite and elegant homeowners’ lounge. Care and support if you ever need it Adlington’s real point of difference, however, has to be the 24-hour on site care option when it is needed and which is provided by the company’s partner MHA (Methodist Homes) who have been providing care and support for more than 70 years. Plus, for added peace of mind there will be a sophisticated emergency call system and security video. Benefits to downsizing Research reveals that almost half of pensioners across the UK are choosing to downsize their homes and move into smaller, more manageable apartments.
18
Moving to a retirement development offers access to a likeminded community. Although the apartments are private, there are plenty of opportunities for companionship, with community hubs that homeowners can be as involved in as little or as much as they like. As the loneliness epidemic has hit the UK hard in recent years, with 1.2 million older people suffering from chronic loneliness, our developments offer an umbrella of tailored support to ensure loneliness is never an issue. Purchasers are supported through each step of their move from help with de-cluttering, to a complimentary handyman service. And don’t worry, the thoughtful internal design of the apartments means that there’s still plenty of space!’ The Brooklands House development is quickly taking shape and a number of off-plan reservations have already been taken from eager purchasers. A selection of beautifully appointed show apartments will be available to view towards the end of November. For more information please call 01785 249 175 or visit: www.adlington.co.uk.

Cannock and District Soroptimists World Food Day Soroptimists made the most of World Food Day – Monday 16th October – by collecting items of food to donate to the Cannock Food Bank, collecting at their September and October meetings.
The local food bank has recently put out an urgent plea for more food as their stocks are running very low. Soroptimists are pleased to be able to support this project – many of us are lucky enough to never have to worry about where the next meal comes from, though we know this is not the case for everyone. Enabling a mother to feed her children, [and herself], means that they are being helped towards a safer and healthier life.
20
The focus of the action and work undertaken by Soroptimists is to improve the lives of women and girls: making sure they are not hungry is part of that work. All food donated is either tinned or in packets and they welcome such items as: milk -UHT or powdered; sugar; soup; pasta sauces; tinned vegetables; tea bags; instant coffee; tinned meat or fish; tinned fruit; tinned rice pudding; jam; biscuits or snack bars. Figures show that 1 in 5 people in the UK live below the poverty line; foodbanks provide essential help to these people and families. Cannock & District foodbank works using a voucher referral system
and recipients then receive a pack containing three days worth of nutritionally balanced, non-perishable food. More information is available on their website: www.cannockdistrict. foodbank.org.uk. Please follow all of Cannock Soroptimists activities on their website: www.sigbi.org/ cannock-and-district or on their face book page: www.facebook.com/SICannock

What term am I looking at? What level of risk can take? What level of volatility (fluctuation in value over time) can I take? What happens in an emergency? Will I pay tax on my profits? Am I investing for extra income or do I want to grow my capital? How much is the advice going to cost me? What am I expecting in return for investing my money (what interest rate)? Do I know as much as I need to know to make an informed choice about where I need to invest?
At FSC Investment Services Limited, we will guide you through the decision making process, we will be your guide to the most appropriate products for your needs. For further details of our service please call us on 01902 422333.
The problem is that most people when faced with these decisions opt to take the easy route out, in other words you do what you think is the least risky and easiest to understand option, usually your building society deposit account or cash ISA. I say
INDEPENDENT
this is a problem simply because this is the area we have all grown up with. Unfortunately it is also the one that is likely to give you a very poor return for your investment.

Recipe of the month Mushroom & Chicken Pot Pies
These perfectly portioned individual pies make a filling lunch or supper simply served with steamed vegetables. You can use any mix of mushrooms but it’s worth looking out for packs of mixed exotic mushrooms for extra flavour.
Ingredients • 25g dried porcini mushrooms • 25g butter • 2 tbsp olive oil • 2 shallots, peeled and chopped • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 400g mixed mushrooms, chopped • 250g chicken breast fillet, diced • 200g tub créme fraiche • 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves • 300g puff pastry • Beaten egg, to glaze
36
1. Place the porcini in a heatproof bowl and cover with 150ml boiling water. Leave to soak for 10-15 minutes. Preheat the oven to 220C, Fan 200C, Gas Mark 7. 2. Heat the butter and half the olive oil in a large frying pan and fry the shallots for 5 minutes until softened. Add the garlic and fry for a further 3-4 minutes then stir in all the mushrooms and fry over a high heat until softened. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. 3. Add the rest of the olive oil to the frying pan and fry the diced chicken for 5-6 minutes until golden brown all over. 4. Drain the porcini mushrooms and add the soaking liquid to the chicken. Bring to the boil then simmer for 5 minutes until reduced. Meanwhile, finely chop the porcini mushrooms and stir into the fried mushrooms and shallots. 5. Return all the mushrooms and shallots to the pan and stir in the créme fraiche and thyme leaves. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Divide the mixture between four individual ovenproof pie dishes. Brush the rims of the dishes with water. 6. Roll out the pastry to about 4mm thickness. Cut out four circles of pastry big enough to fit on top of the dishes with a little pastry overlapping the edges. Drape the pastry circles over the filling. Decorate the tops with leaves cut from the pastry trimmings and brush the pastry with beaten egg. Bake in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden.

Pick Your Own Pumpkins in Bednall! The family team at Moors Covert farm have been getting themselves geared up for the opening of
their farm gate! From 21st October - 31st October, the farm will be open from 10am until 4pm every day, to welcome you all to their pick your own pumpkin patch!
The farm has been growing pumpkins for 10 years now, and every single year they have increased the size of their pumpkin patch to meet the demand from their loyal customers. Whilst Moors Covert Farm is a family dairy farm for 365 days a year, they look forward to welcoming old and new customers to their pumpkin patch for the week leading up to Halloween! The pumpkin seeds are planted in May and by October the stems and leaves have died back to reveal the amorous orange pumpkins. The crop are looking fabulous with all sorts of shapes and sizes, colours and textures ranging from nobbly old witch types, long thing and pear shapes, funny and even rude shapes!
There is a fantastic straw castle to climb amongst, an array of diggers to play in the sand with and buggie rides around the fields. As you walk the patch with one of our fleet of wheelbarrows to find your perfect pumpkin, you will find an array of scarecrows planted amongst the crop. The pumpkin patch is free to enter, and we welcome absolutely everyone from grandmas to babies (often dressed as pumpkins) and everyone in between. Not only do the family team welcome you to pick your own pumpkin, there will also be an array of refreshments on sale including homemade cakes, hot teas and coffees, honey produced by bees on the farm and eggs laid by chickens just in the village.
Carving your own pumpkin is a fantastic time, and not only can you make a lovely pumpkin lantern, the

Stafford Players Break The Enigma Code From Tuesday November 7th to Saturday November 11th Stafford Players are presenting “Breaking the Code” by Hugh Whitemore. Based on the book “Alan Turing, The Enigma” by Andrew Hodges, it is about a recent hot news topic. It tells the story of Alan Turing, the breaker of the Enigma code at Bletchley Park, which played a vital role in the Allied victory in World War 2. This beautifully constructed drama chronicles, with sensitivity and humanity, the story of his fall from personal favourite of Churchill to convicted criminal, and his final lonely death. This play, which contains adult language, is about who he was, what happened to him and why. “Breaking the Code” was specially chosen by Mike Roberts for his directing debut. He’s been ably assisted by Voirrey Stewart who is a very experienced director. The cast of 7 men and 2 women includes 4 newcomers to the Players. One of them, Jordan Wingfield, plays the demanding, lead role of Alan Turing. Jordan, who studied Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies at University in London, is on stage for nearly the whole of the play! The other newbies play Alan’s various acquaintances at different stages of his life.
booking charges. They are available from www.staffordgatehousetheatre.co.uk or from the Box Office on 01785 619080. Actually, Harvey Pearce, who plays the Greek youngster Nikos, does have a connection with Stafford Players. His father Andrew Pearce and his Mum Julie Woolley (as she then was) met and fell in love in Stafford Players back in the 1990s. Harvey is the eldest of their three sons. The rest of the cast are all familiar faces to Stafford Players’ followers. The play even offers a rare chance to see Brenda Hunt in a serious role, as Alan Turing’s mother. Being performed in the intimate Malcolm Edwards Theatre (MET) at Stafford’s Gatehouse, the play begins at 7.30pm every night. Tickets are £9 (concessions £8) plus Gatehouse
