Don’t Forget The Children! It is an ongoing debate – “should we invite children to the ceremony, the evening event or not at all?” Upset and bored children can ruin the wedding day for parents and most of all the bride and groom when they are trying to make those all important vows and speeches. We have all been at those ceremonies with a crying baby and at those meals where mom and dad have to entertain the tot and miss the speeches or meal. Dunston Pre-school Playgroup A rural setting with Happy Children and Parents Dunston Pre-school Playgroup has been running for over 30 years and has seen many changes during this time. Today it is a very different setting from that of 30 years ago. With the Early Years foundation stage guidelines, Ofsted inspections and all other legislation that has to be met by childcare settings in place. We still pride ourselves in being known as a warm welcoming and family friendly environment in a rural location. The Pre-school Playgroup is set in a beautiful location just of the A449 in Dunston. We have a large outdoor play area with a very busy Mud Kitchen where the children enjoy some lovely messy play. There is a separate area for bikes and cars, a Wendy House and areas for other toys, fun and games and also a covered area so we can still access the outdoors in the bad weather. The children love to watch the tractors and farm machinery that passes by during the day. Other outdoor adventures include playing on the school field such as sledging in the snow and races in the summer and the small wood at the bottom of the field where we play and picnic. We also go on walks across the farmer’s field with the sheep in, to see the trains speeding by or to visit the church. The children enjoy exploring and investigating the outdoors and natural world in a small friendly setting where they feel safe, happy and confident. Our priority at Dunston Playgroup is to always put the child’s needs first we work very hard to support them and their family to ensure every child develops to the best of their ability in a warm and nurturing environment. Our Staff are all fully qualified with a

wealth of knowledge and understanding as they are all parents themselves. The staff are long-serving and all like minded in their dedication to providing high quality care for all of our children. Three Noisy Chickens To The Rescue By Diane Pike

Winter will soon be here and don’t you just love it? Well maybe or maybe not! I feel there are certain things that children love about winter that adults don’t. They look forward to icy footpaths on which to daringly slide along and - of course - snow! ‘Snow, Snow, Snow!’ they shout. Adults then retaliate with ‘No, no, no!’ We have to struggle to get into work despite all the snow!

Cold Weather Can Kill

Can you help an older person this Winter? There are some simple things you can do to support them through the cold weather too: • Call in or visit more often if the cold weather stops your friend or family member from getting out and about. Calling in on someone can help keep their spirits up and make them feel less isolated. • Make sure they have basic food items in the cupboard or freezer in case it’s too cold to go shopping. • Pick up prescriptions if it’s too cold for them to go out, or find out if their local pharmacy offers a prescription pick-up and delivery service. • Make sure they don’t have a fall. Bring round a mixture of salt and sand for putting on steps or paths in icy weather. Some councils provide free bags of the mix, otherwise try a local DIY store. • Encourage them to keep warm. Their main living room should be heated to 70F/21C, and the rest of the house heated to at least 64F/18C. Low temperatures increase the risk of flu and other respiratory problems and can raise blood pressure. • Help them get a benefits check to make sure they’re claiming everything they’re eligible for. Penkridge Victorian Christmas Market Friday 27th November Penkridge Victorian Christmas Market is the annual event that everyone looks forward to and truly marks the start of the Festive Season! With over 100 stalls of fabulous food and local crafts, as well as plenty of entertainment, it’s no wonder thousands of people attend every year. Book now for some Festive Fun with Katharine House Hospice The nights are drawing in, the leaves are falling and soon we will be starting our plans for Christmas. To give you some early ideas on how to make your Christmas one to remember, Katharine House Hospice’s Ladies Luncheon Committee are hosting an afternoon of Festive Fun at the Moat House in Acton Trussell on Thursday 19th November between 2pm – 5pm. The event is always extremely popular and over the last few years tickets have sold out very quickly. This year we will be joined by Diana Scott MBE, who will be demonstrating “Decorating your Home” and floristry. There will be a range of independent traders on the day, giving guests the opportunity to purchase some fabulous seasonal gifts. It’s a great opportunity for guests to buy something a little different than what is available from the high street. Lisa Carson, Events Fundraiser at the Hospice says:

“This event is always very popular and we are looking forward to an entertaining afternoon as well as raising much needed funds for the hospice. The committee and I would like to thank all our demonstrators for giving their time so freely. Dreaming about garden styles By Diarmuid Gavin

Recent years have brought us sensory overload as we have been assaulted by varieties of different garden types and different planting schemes as never before. This has happened through television, garden shows, magazines, books, garden centres and nurseries. We are swamped by choice. Gardening, garden styles, garden creation and makeover have become trendy, some would say faddish. For your own garden it is something you want to avoid. You want to make an informed decision on what you want, what you love and what is suitable. So we are talking garden style. What does that mean? What is a style? Well it’s a practical and visual manifestation of garden types that have evolved in different places around the world for different reasons. Phew. On the surface it sounds complicated but it’s not really. Close your eyes. Do it now. And name for me in your head as many garden styles as you can think of. Right. Let’s see how you did. We have the makeover style - the one that has been popular on television for many years, generally contemporary, clean lines, often architectural planting or maybe grasses, the garden as a room outside, high on fashion. But what else? There’s the twee suburban style I was brought up with, lawns, cherry trees, bedding plants, and rows of hybrid tea or floribunda roses, rockeries and crazy paving, all surrounded by a hedge. That’s two. Both of these styles have been as a response to how we have lived at various times. Number three – the very English cottage garden – sentimental and colourful, a chocolate box image of herbaceous flowers, and traditional rustic materials – stone walls, dovecotes, wishing wells, fruit and vegetables, quaint. Number four – the posh garden. Hedges trimmed within an inch of their lives, Buxus sempervirens (box) as plant number one, deliciously flowing herbaceous borders, colours ranging from hot to cool, then back again, for Gardens Illustrated devotees, Lutyens benches, cast iron statuary, fountains and brick pavilions with terracotta tiled roofs.

Grand gardens. Number five – the Italian/ Tuscan gardens of our dreams – tall Cypress tress, lavender, cooling canals of water, focal points, parterres, terraces stepping down sloped sites, views beyond being captured by the garden user, shady grottoes to contrast with blazing sunshine. Number six – the Japanese garden. A Zen-like soulful escape from the material world! Gravel raked into swirls around rocks masquerading as craggy islands, bamboo, maple, Ophiopogon, Acorus, lanterns to light the way, stepping stones over still pools, pathways which offer the visitor choice, moss and temples, tea ceremonies. All these garden styles have evolved for reasons, in different places. Their evolution ranges through social or economic conditions, rulers wanting to dominate the landscape and dominate plants, the creation of heaven on earth for meditation or practical responses to keeping areas of vegetation neat and tidy. What garden is it that you like and why? For many it’s memories of growing up, digging vegetables with Granddad or staking up dahlias. It may be that you have your house exactly as you want it from architecture to interior design and the new garden won’t work unless it matches seamlessly. You might be a plantaholic and have a craving to display as many different types of species as possible. You might love the contrast between leaves, the architectural nature of foliage or it could be that you really appreciate flowering arranging and want material. Whatever it is, try to step beyond what’s new or exciting and even a classic style that’s “in” again. It’s another time to close the eyes, what would your ideal garden be and why? Does it suit you and all the other members of the household, does it seem to fit your spot in your head, can you afford to create it, do you have the time and skill to look after it? A WALK IN THE PARK FOR YOUR FESTIVE WANTS & NEEDS... Christmas has come early for Mere Park Garden Centre in Newport! With not long now until the big day, Mere Park Garden Centre (just off the A41) has recently opened their Christmas Barn! A winter wonderland offering everything you could possibly want and more for the festive period. The centres festive sales area is now open! The Christmas Barn showcases a number of enchanting displays, giving you the perfect idea of how to decorate your home this Christmas.

Santa arrive by classic bus at 1pm and the Grotto will be open from 1:30pm-5pm. The Grotto will also be open every weekend leading upto Christmas from 11:15am-5pm on Saturdays and 10:30m-4:15pm on Sundays. For a full itinerary of festive events throughout November and December see the programme of events listed on the adjacent page.

Manager Pam Shaw said “We want to give people ideas and inspiration about how their own homes could look.” For Mrs Shaw and her team at Mere Park, Christmas started months ago. She explained, “We go over to Holland in January each year to buy for the following Christmas.” “All of the plans for this year have been drawn up since about February. All of the areas and displays are designed by the staff.”
