A Marathon for Responders!

Raising money for Penkridge & District Community First Responders Two friends from Penkridge who only started

running together just two years ago took part in

their first Marathon in April. Emma Painter & Jane Griffin faced the challenge of UK’s second largest

Marathon which was held along Brighton seafront on Sunday 15th April.

They chose Penkridge & District Community First Responders as the charity to support while they were enjoying the sea breeze (and rain) along with nearly 12,000 other participants. Their initial target was to raise £400 but by the day of the race this had already been exceeded, providing over £700 of vital funding for the lifesaving work of our local volunteer first responders. Emma said that they set off at 10:15am, “The atmosphere at the start was amazing. The support along the way phenomenal. It really did carry us along. The amount of people running for charity was

Brooklands House, luxury retirement development in Stafford now open For those looking to focus on the future and plan their retirement adventure in Stafford, there’s good news as luxury retirement developer Adlington has opened its doors and welcomed new homeowners at its brand new development on Eccleshall Road. The new development comprises of 55 one, two and three bedroom luxury apartments for over 65’s looking to downsize yet retain their independence. Sales Success Having only opened its doors in April, the Eccleshall Road based development has achieved a staggering 75% reservation rate in just a matter of weeks, which the company believes is testament to the broad appeal of independent retirement living in and around Stafford. Claire Hastings, Sales Advisor says: “We are so pleased that the development has been named as a top selling site and we have very much enjoyed bringing the Adlington product to Stafford homebuyers. “We thought that there was a great deal of demand in the town for a new independent retirement facility but to have sold so many within such a short time is a new record for Adlington which has developments in other UK locations” Luxury accommodation At Brooklands House there is no need to compromise on style and luxury in later life as each of the spacious private apartments offers modern, fully fitted kitchens and generous living areas. Many feature en-suite shower rooms and separate bathrooms and most have walk on balconies or a patio area overlooking beautifully landscaped gardens as well as the Doxey Marshes Nature Reserve. In addition, the building has a table service restaurant, which offers breakfast and lunch daily, a hairdressing salon, assisted spa and therapy room, activities room, guest suite and elegant homeowners’ lounge. Benefits to downsizing Moving to a retirement development offers access to a likeminded community. Although the apartments are private, there are plenty of opportunities for

20

companionship, with community hubs that homeowners can be as involved in as little or as much as they like. Care and support if you ever need it Adlington’s real point of difference, however, has to be the 24-hour on site care option when it is needed and which is provided by the company’s partner MHA (Methodist Homes) who have been providing care and support for more than 70 years. Plus, for added peace of mind there is a sophisticated emergency call system, meaning someone is on hand instantly in the event of any emer-gency, which operates within each apartment and throughout the entire development including the gardens. Support throughout your move Purchasers are supported through each step of their move from help with decluttering, to a complimentary handyman service. Our unique personal clerk service makes the moving process easier from help with liaising with estate agents to arranging removal companies. We also offer a part exchange service if the thought of putting your house on the market is too much. With over 75% already reserved or sold the remaining apartments are selling quickly. Please visit our show apartments at Brooklands House open daily 10am to 5pm. For more information please call 01785 249175 or visit: www.adlington.co.uk

A host of woolly fun to be had at Wool @ J13 12th and 13th May 2018 Last May, over 1,500 wool and yarn fans flocked to a brand-new festival based at Penkridge’s Lower Drayton Farm. The event is the brainchild of Ingrid and Lower Drayton Farm’s Val James – Ingrid had spotted a gap in the market for a strong Midlands wool festival, and, when the pair got chatting during an event at the farm in Spring 2016, the topic soon turned to the potential of the venue and the huge interest in wool craft. The rest is history. Shop till you drop… The inaugural Wool @ J13 festival was such as success that over 90% of last year’s traders have signed up to attend the show again, with so many new applications flooding in that the show’s ‘Shop till you Drop’ marquee has doubled in size for 2018. Some 82 stands will grace the event this year; with stallholders hailing from all over the UK.

knitting and crochet, needle, Nuno and wet felting animal pics & a flower garden, pegloom weaving, hearing all about how to shear an Angora rabbit, tackling tapestry & Tunisian crochet, and creating a flower brooch using weaving sticks. So genuinely something for everyone but with advance booking essential to avoid disappointment!

Local wool and yarn businesses in attendance will include Ducky Darlings from Derbyshire showcasing hand dyed yarns in the ‘Saw Them Here First’ exhibitor section; Jo Knit Sew from Penkridge with her Big Girl Pants & matching socks, plus Lichfield’s Pollyorange with her vibrant wools from the heart of Staffordshire. And new on the scene and local, too, is The Crochet Man with his collection of superb Amigurumi creatures and his very own new patterns to match.

Soak up the party atmosphere… When you are shopped – and workshopped – out, there’s still plenty to enjoy. A number of ‘stop and watch’ demonstrations – including sheep shearing & spinning – will take place over the weekend, there is a ‘stash swap’ where you can trade in your old stash for fresh yarn, and a fleece sale should you fancy getting hands-on with the raw material. And if you have any energy over, you can always try out Hula-Hooping!

Get involved… With a packed programme of workshops and two exhibitions, the event offers plenty of ways for visitors to get hands-on with wool during their visit as well as the opportunity to showcase their skills.

The Haywood Sisters, London’s top close harmony trio, will provide musical entertainment and there will be ample refreshments on site from Street Food vendors including Anna Bell’s black & white ice cream cart, ringing the changes with her Staffordshire home grown & home-made dairy goodness & fruit purees in a cone, plus a licensed bar. Families with children will be able to take them to visit animals down on Lower Drayton Farm, the show’s venue.

Workshop topics this year include felting a Mini Guinea Pig from a piece of knitting, creating crochet shawls with beads, adventures with the big boy of broomstick crochet, , learning how to darn (a forgotten skill), making your own knitting & crochet accessories, Dorset button making, drop-spindle & Dizzy Sheep spinning, Go Big or Go Home arm knitting with giant yarn, in a whirl with mandalas & how to crochet them, lace shawl knitting & reading patterns, left-handed crochet (because the world is not solely right handed), beginners’ guides to both

22

Wool @ J13 will take place on Saturday 12th & Sunday 13th May 2018 at Lower Drayton Farm near Penkridge. Tickets are £10pp per day or £16pp for weekend pass on the gate with savings of £2 per ticket for booking online in advance. Recipe of the month Asparagus Bruschettas Enjoy the wonderful flavour of fresh British asparagus with these deliciously simple topped toasts. To make them more substantial add some flaked smoked mackerel or ruffles of Parma ham.

Ready in 20 minutes. Makes 6. Ingredients 12 fresh asparagus spears, trimmed 6 thin slices crusty bread (such as sour dough) 6 tbsp good quality olive oil 1 large garlic clove, halved 225g (8oz) goats’ cheese Handful of rocket leaves Salt and freshly ground black pepper

24

1. Half fill a large frying pan with water and bring to the boil. Add the asparagus spears and simmer for 3-4 minutes until just tender. Drain well and refresh under cold running water. 2. Brush the slices of bread on both sides with some of the olive oil. Place the slices on a hot cast-iron griddle pan and cook for 1-2 minutes on each side until just crisp and lightly charred in places. If you don’t have a griddle pan then simply grill the toasts. 3. Rub the cut garlic cloves all over the hot toasts (this imparts a mild garlic flavour to the toasts). Spread the goats’ cheese over the toasts. 4. Arrange the asparagus spears on top of the cheese and add a few rocket leaves to each. Drizzle over the rest of the olive oil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and serve immediately. www.thepenkridgeadvertiser.co.uk | 01785 318619

Wolgarston High School Annual Dance Festival On Wednesday 28th March Wolgarston High School held its annual Dance Festival showcasing local student’s talents. Students from local middle schools and dance academies joined forces with Wolgarston High School to host the event. The festival was organised by Mrs Sally Stanton (Head of PE). “It was brilliant to see so many parents, family and friends turn up to show their support for our students,” said Mrs Stanton.

Checker, the Bee Gees, Madcon and the Village People. “As always it was great to see everyone come together within the local community and celebrate the talent our students have”, said Mrs Stanton,

This year’s theme was all about ‘Dancing through the Decades ‘. Students from Penkridge and Brewood Middle, Wolgarston High, Dene Dance School, Sandra’s School of Dance, Revolution Dance Academy and Loco Academy all took the stage as well as thirteen members of Wolgarston’s staff. Mr Greenwood ( Director of Learning for Maths) hosted the event, “As always it is a pleasure to host this event, we get to see up and coming talents plus everyone gets to hear my wonderful jokes.”

“Every year I am amazed at the outstanding level of performance achieved by all of the children and staff. They are amazing and have made us so proud. I wonder what next year’s festival theme will be?”

This year all of the schools collaborated in paying homage to how the art of dance and music has changed over the decades, by performing routines to an eclectic mix of artists such as Wham, Chubby

Free Market Stall for Local Businesses and Community Groups Penkridge Market has announced today that it has launched an initiative to help local businesses and community groups, as part of the national ‘Love your Local Market campaign’ this May. They are offering any new or existing business or community group in the Parish of Penkridge the opportunity to take up a free stall on the Market, for one day, to help promote their business or group. The Market will be offering these special pitches to anyone over the age of 16, on Saturday 26th May and Wednesday 30th May.

Bogus Officials

Staffordshire Police This can include doorstep crime, people claiming to come from the council, water-board or other official organisations. Perhaps somebody claiming that the property or garden needs essential maintenance. Another common trick is people claiming their pet/ ball is in that person’s rear garden. What is a bogus official and doorstep crime? Also known as distraction burglars, bogus callers trick their way into people’s homes to steal money and valuables. They make themselves seem genuine and plausible while your attention is elsewhere.

You nominate your own Executors, typically your family. Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney, Will Storage, Estate Planning and Guardianship Trusts. Goodwills also offers Probate services.

Examples of this would include bogus officials, people claiming to come from the council, water-board or tradesmen/workmen claiming that the property or garden needs essential/urgent maintenance. They often work in pairs; one to keep you talking at the front door while the other tries to access your house from a back door or window. Some might even plead for help, such as asking for a glass of water. As a force, Staffordshire Police is doing all it can to catch those responsible for these despicable crimes, and there have been a number of successes. However, there is a lot more that individuals and communities can do. If you see anything in your local area relating to the welfare of a vulnerable person which worries you, check it out. If you are still concerned, contact the police on the non emergency number - 101 or in the case of emergency contact 999. While the loss of money or valuables is very distressing, just being a victim causes a great deal of stress and may lead to loss of confidence and poor health. Older and more vulnerable people are more likely to be a target for rogue traders, doorstep criminals and scammers.

National Trust Staffordshire Centre Upcoming Events Programme Car Visit Perrycroft Tuesday 15th May Perrycroft is a small ‘arts and crafts’ house designed by CFA Voysey, hidden in the woodlands of the Malvern Hills and surrounded by an interesting garden. The setting is stunning. It has been the family home of Mark and Gillian Archer since 1999 and they have restored the house, garden and outbuildings. The house is no longer open for group visits so we are fortunate to have made an early booking. Gillian Archer will welcome us, provide information sheets and will be available to answer our questions. Tea/coffee and cake will be served at the end of our visit.

Car Visit Trentham Gardens Wednesday 27th June Following the successful talk about Trentham Gardens in October last year, a visit and guided tour of approximately one hour has been arranged with Clive, a retired senior gardener. The award winning Gardens, part of a 725 acre estate, include a revived Italian Garden by Chelsea gold medal winner Tom Stuart Smith, a mile long lake designed by Capability Brown and show gardens.

Coach Visit to Croft Castle and Berrington Hall Wednesday 11th July Berrington Hall and Croft Castle, less than 7 miles apart, lie just south of Ludlow. These are two very different properties; Croft Castle built originally in

the 11th century, rebuilt in the 14th century and then altered by its owners to suit family life, and Berrington Hall designed by Henry Holland and built in the 18th century. However the interiors of both properties are mainly Georgian. At Croft Castle - 1000 years of the Croft family, 13th century church, ‘Hafod’ paintings and the dream of one of Croft’s owners, Fishpool Valley Project, women and the 1st World War, Carpenters’ tearoom with Croft vineyard wines and fresh produce from the garden, 1500 acres of parkland. At Berrington Hall - Capability Brown designed gardens and parkland, Welcome Centre highlighting what is happening in 2018, Georgian Garden restoration, women at Berrington during the 17th century and costume exhibition, Servants’ Hall tearoom for afternoon tea. The walking trails in both parks are rough and can be muddy so you will need suitable footwear if you wish to explore them. Visitors £18.00 Non NT £27.00 Leaving from Wildwood at 9:15am and Stafford Railway Station at 9:30am. Call Peter Jobling 01785 822592 or 07415 798498 for more information. During 2017/18 the Centre, from it’s activities had a surplus above its operating costs and will donate £4000 to the Shugborough Estate. The Estate plans to use this money in various ways, such as, 1. Providing container boxes for the Defribrillators, which themselves have been donated, 2. a weather canopy for the ‘Wheelchair carrying buggy’, 3. a garden bench and 4. any surplus after that to be used for the restoration of wall paintings in the Mansion House Dining Room

Everyone welcome. Call Peter Jobling 01785 822 592 or 07415 798 498 for more information or bookings. May 2018

Cannock and District Ladies Probus April AGM Meeting

Following the AGM in April new Chairman Sheila Burrows opened her first meeting of the year: welcoming members and four prospective members.

Following an enjoyable meal with time to chat, our speaker Trevor Poxon regaled us with humorous tales from his time as a Police Motorway Patrol

Driver. The most significant change over the years being that it was important to keep the

carriageways clear and the traffic free flowing as life expectancy getting out of your car on the motorway is a frightening 20 seconds;

another memorable occasion he was called to

culminated in him encouraging all young people to participate in “Pass Plus” following passing their

driving test. As this helps with further instruction on motorway driving, night driving, all weather

conditions, confidence building; and can then be used to obtain a discount on car insurance.

Flower presentations were made with gratitude to our two retiring Attendance Secretaries who had

held this position for the last five years: Gill Hackett and Ann Legg.

Meetings are held at The Chase Golf and

Country Club on the first Thursday of the month at 12 noon. Guests and prospective new members are welcome.

On one occasion he was called to rescue a lady

driver who could not escape ‘spaghetti junction’ as she was trying to find the exit to the M1. On

Midlands Air Ambulance Charity Midlands Air Ambulance Charity is responsible for funding and operating three air ambulances serving six Midlands counties, including Staffordshire. This constitutes the largest air ambulance operating region in the UK. Since 1991, the charity has responded to more than 50,000 missions averaging 6 per day, making it one of the longest established and busiest air ambulance organisations in the UK. The charity’s three airbases are strategically located at RAF Cosford in Shropshire, Tatenhill in Staffordshire and Strensham in Worcestershire, which allows 90 per cent of the region to be reached within eight minutes. If a patient reaches hospital within the Golden Hour (60 minutes after their injury) their chances of survival are dramatically increased. That is why the rapid response of the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity is so vital in an emergency situation.

near Market Square. Pop in and say hello to our manager Erin and her lovely volunteers! They’re always very grateful to receive donations, and can accept quality furniture as well as clothing, books, bric-a-brac, DVDs/CDs and electrical items. Furniture can also be collected for FREE from the Stafford area. If you’d like to arrange a collection or donate any unwanted items call 01785 336541. Events Midlands Air Ambulance Charity also hosts a number of events throughout the year for the public to meet the aircrew and learn more about how the charity saves lives every day. There is an Open Day at Tatenhill Airbase in Burton-upon-Trent on Sunday 15th July, which will be a great opportunity for locals to get involved, fundraise and find out more about the charity.

Funding What is not widely known is that Midlands Air Ambulance Charity receives no Government or National Lottery funding. Each Midlands Air Ambulance Charity mission costs £2,500 and in excess of £9 million is needed each year to keep its three air ambulances operational, which is donated entirely by the public and local businesses, with four in ten of those we help funded by Gifts in Wills.

Keep up to date with Midlands Air Ambulance Charity on social media by following us on Facebook and Twitter @MAA_Charity For more information about Midlands Air Ambulance Charity and how to support the organisation in other ways, please contact the team on 0800 8 40 20 40 or visit, www.midlandsairambulance.com

Cannock Soroptimists Cannock Soroptimists held their AGM at the beginning of April. One of the final tasks out-going President Val Jones undertook was to acknowledge the years of service to Soroptimist International – and the Cannock & District club – that three members in particular have given.

Pam McGauley, Trish Mellor and Lakhwinder Thompson all joined the Club in 1998 and so have each given 20 years of service to SI Cannock & District. To mark the occasion President Val presented each of them with a long service certificate. All three members have held the role of President within the club and Trish and Lakhwinder have each been club secretary. Trish has been Programme Action Officer, co-ordinating the work the club does to educate, enable and empower women and girls and has been the Club’s Press Officer for a number of years. Lakhwinder has been Treasurer, Membership secretary and has held the post of Friendship Link Co-ordinator for some time. She corresponds and shares news and views with link clubs in Harrisburg, Perth, Melbourne, Vienna and Port Talbot. Pam has been Membership officer both at the club and at Midland Chase Region, this particular role taking her to all other clubs within the Midland Chase. She has often served as a member of the Club’s executive committee. All three have been extremely active Soroptimists – and all three asked where the last 20 years had gone! Please follow all of Cannock Soroptimist activities on their website: www.sigbi.org/cannock-and-district or on their face book page: www.facebook.com/SICannock
