Changing Rooms by Helen Taylor

If you feel like you’ve been putting up with tired décor and dated furnishings for far too long, then make some changes this summer and transform your home into the stylish and modern abode you’ve been longing for. Select bold accessories and striking furnishings for your home that reflect your individual style and taste; it’s 16

companies have to offer - you’ll be surprised at the quality, choice and unique buys that are on your doorstep. Combining a mixture of both modern and traditional pieces in your home can make for a really great, eclectic and individual look. Antique and second-hand items of furniture can be given a modern facelift and offer an inexpensive and striking alternative to high street mass-produced goods.

Don’t restrict yourself by buying only from specific stores, think outside of the box and check out what local

Stop them in their tracks Staffordshire Police The chance of becoming a vehicle crime victim

in South Staffs is very low, however by following

our simple advice you can reduce these chances

even further. An opportunist thief will see whether your car doors are locked, look to see if car

keys can be hooked through the letterbox or see whether they can get into your home through

unlocked doors or windows to get your keys and drive off in your vehicle.

You can stop opportunist thieves in their tracks by taking a few simple precautions. Always take everything out of your vehicle, even a bag of rubbish could lure a thief. Remove sat nav and suction marks and always close windows and lock doors. If you use a fob, stand by your vehicle and listen to make sure you hear it locking – it’s easy to press the wrong button and mistakenly think your vehicle is safe. When at home park in well-lit area or park in your garage if you have one. Thieves don’t want to draw attention to what they’re doing so consider installing movement activated security lights at the front and back of your property. Be vigilant – if you have a high value prestige car it may attract the attention of a professional thief who will use tactics to find where you live to steal the car. If you think you’re being followed, safely pull over and let that vehicle pass. If you see anyone acting

suspiciously near your home or

vehicle, report it to police on 101

or 999 if something is happening.

Fight Premature Ageing by Helen Taylor

Ageing is unfortunately an inevitable process for us all, but if you take steps to protect your skin now, you’ll benefit in the future. Environmental factors play an enormous role in how well - or not -you age, so it’s really important to look at how your current lifestyle might affect your skin in the future. Those bad health and beauty habits you have now could be exposing you to long-term skin damage and accelerating the ageing process. But don’t worry, if you take notice of our tips, you’ll stay looking youthful for longer. Keep Your Skin Safe in the Sun The sun is one of the biggest factors in premature ageing, so you need to ensure that you properly protect against it. You’ll be well aware of the need for sunscreen when you’re lying on the beach, but you might not realise that you need to use it every day. That’s because skin-damaging UV rays are present even when the sun isn’t shining. If you can’t live without an allyear-round tan, then you’ll need to find an alternative to regular visits to the sunbed. Sunbeds are equally - if not more - damaging than the sun and they’ll leave your skin looking coarse, leathery and wrinkled.

May 2016

And sun-lovers really must be aware of the damage to their skin, because it doesn’t end there. Squinting in the sun can, over time, cause crow’s-feet, so always wear sunglasses and ensure that they offer proper protection for your eyes else you may become more prone to cataracts in later life. Apply sunscreen liberally to every part of your body that’s exposed to the sun. Don’t rely on SPFenhanced make-up alone for your face, it’s likely that you don’t apply enough of the product to fully protect your skin. And remember the dangers of UV rays go far beyond wrinkled skin, over exposure puts you at risk of developing skin cancer. Time to Quit Another lifestyle factor that you need to address for the sake of your skin - and your health - is smoking. It’s hard to quit, but if you want to kerb or prevent the signs of premature aging then it’s a must. The free radicals in cigarette smoke break down collagen, slow the skin’s ability to heal and make it look sallow, dull and lifeless, because smoking inhibits the blood supply that keeps skin looking healthy. Wrinkles prematurely begin to form and you start to age quickly compared to your non-smoking friends.

Even if you don’t smoke you are still at risk of these effects if you spend time in smoky atmospheres, so it’s best to steer clear of second-hand smoke altogether. Don’t Pull Your Face Your mom probably told you that if you pull your face like that way it’ll stick that way, well she was right. Repetitive movements - like frowning and raising your eyebrows can encourage lines to form earlier than they should. It’s good to express yourself, but if you find yourself frequently pulling the same expression make a change now, or expect wrinkles in the future. Get into a Routine Start a skincare routine today. There’s no better time to start dedicating time in your day to your skin. Invest in a variety of skincare products to help you in your quest to stay looking youthful. Eye creams, moisturisers and exfoliators are essential. And don’t forget the value of living a healthy lifestyle. Eating a diet that’s rich in vitamins A, C and E (found in brightly coloured fruit and vegetables) and omega-3 fatty acids (from fish, nuts and seeds) will boost skin from the inside out. However, an exciting addition this year will be the 399th Marathon run by Mark Vaz. Please come

along to the Village centre on Saturday morning to

see Mark set off from outside Tedstones at 10.30am. Bring your flags along and let’s make it a Marathon to remember for him. The fairground organ will be

there as in the past and you will also be able to buy your tickets for the Grand Draw.

Mark’s run will finish within the grounds of the

Haling Dene Centre while the fete is in progress so you will be able to cheer him in. A full programme is being arranged for the afternoon with Punch &

Judy shows, music from the Cannock Music Centre Bands and St Michael’s School Choir, dancing and

much more! With an extra special close planned to close our afternoon of ‘Celebration’. See You There!

Penkridge Market takes part in National ‘Love Your Local Market’ Campaign... Penkridge Market has recently announced that it will be participating in the high profile, national 2016 Love Your Local Market campaign, led by the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA), with full support from the wider markets industry and government. The initiative, which was first thought of by Mary Portas, who suggested a national markets day, has developed over the years into a full fortnight, highlighting all that is great about UK markets. The campaign, which will run from 17th May to 31st May, aims to attract new market traders and highlights the importance that markets play in the heart of their local community, not only for retail but as a valuable community asset, providing the focal point of many town centres. It provides a national spotlight on markets across the country and is not only wholeheartedly supported by the industry but Government and a range of other partners. The campaign serves to build affection and support for markets, by enhancing their status within the local community and offers start-ups an opportunity to test a new concept in a low cost, low risk environment. Penkridge will be joining over 1200 markets across the country by taking part in Love Your Local Market and are offering incentivised pitches aimed at attracting new traders. The Market will be leasing stalls to local entrepreneurs during the fortnight (17th May to 31st May), at a reduced rate of £10 per stall, to allow them to ‘try out’ their business ideas and to attract more people to visit the town centre. Matt Williams, Manager at Penkridge Market said: “We know that it can be quite daunting and costly to set up a new business, so a market stall is a great way to try out ideas and get customers feedback, without it costing very much. The market attracts up to 5,000 people from around the Region every Market day, so it’s a great place to start a new business.”

34

The Market will also be offering incentives to the public, to come and support their local traders, with special offers and competitions being held across the fortnight. Matt continued: “We really hope that people will get behind the campaign and come and support their local traders. Obviously the more money that is spent locally, the more wealth it creates for our local economy.” High Streets Minister, Marcus Jones said: “We have a proud heritage of markets in this country. They are a vital part of Britain’s bustling high streets and the heartbeat of communities across the country. They are a key part of the retail offer in many towns, contributing to jobs and local growth and are a proven catalyst for encouraging the next generation of business people. They also offer a vibrancy that the internet and out-of- town retail centres cannot match. I urge market operators, traders and local people across the country to champion this important campaign.” Penkridge Market is situated in the centre of Penkridge, and is signposted off the A449. It is just three miles from Junction 12 of the M6 and is also easily accessible from the A5. It is 6 miles from Stafford; 7 miles from Cannock and 10 miles from Wolverhampton (postcode ST19 5AP). For further information and to book a stall on the market please call Matt Williams on 01785 714221 or see their website www.penkridgemarket.co.uk.

Cyprus Something for Everyone… by Helen Taylor With the perfect mix of beautiful sandy beaches, historic sites and lively nightlife, it’s no surprise that Cyprus is a firm holiday favourite.

Boasting an impressive 340 days of sunshine a year, Cyprus has one of the best climates in Europe, thanks to it’s location in the far south of the Mediterranean. Temperatures start to rise from April - in the 20s - before soaring in the summer months to around the 40ºC mark. The winters stay comfortably warm and most rain is confined to the months between December and March, although only a few inches fall each month. The most comfortable times to visit are April, May and October, as the thermometer moves between 17ºC and 25ºC.

Larnaca region to find clubbing Mecca, Ayia Napa. With the best in clubs, pubs and bars you can party all night long before heading to the town’s long stretch of sand to recover during the day. It’s not just nightlife that’s on offer on Cyprus’ East Coast though, Protaras is a family-favourite thanks to its beautiful beaches that shelve gently into the sea and its array of water sports at Fig Tree Bay. There are impressive craggy rock formations, sea caves and hidden coves along Protaras’ coast which can be explored on foot, bike or boat. The town of Paphos is the most popular resort of Cyprus’ West Coast. There are several golden beaches to enjoy, plenty of historical sites to visit - including the Tombs of the Kings - as well as a picturesque marina. Move away from the coast and you can get a taste of a sleepy Mediterranean existence. There are pine-covered hills and olive groves stretching across the countryside and peaceful village squares, like Pomos and Latchi to visit.

The Culture

The Food

With a long history and rich culture that spans 10,000 years, Cypus is one of the oldest civilisations in the Mediterranean. The Mycenaean Greeks joined the island’s prehistoric age inhabitants 3500 years ago, firmly establishing the island’s Greek roots. Since then Cyprus took influences from the cultures that followed, including the Phoenicians, Assyrians, Egyptians, Romans, Franks, Venetians, Ottomans and British. Each culture has left behind visible remnants of their passage, so it’s no surprise that the island is rich with fascinating cultural sights, museums, monuments and galleries. There’s so much to see, from prehistoric settlements, classical Greek temples, Roman theatres and early Christian basilicas. Venture away from the tourist sites and into rural villages and you’ll find that the customs, traditions and ‘old ways of life’ of Cyprus are still very much alive.

An exotic blend of Greek and Middle Eastern cultures, complete with remnants of ancient civilisations, Cypriot cuisine incorporates a variety of delicious tastes and flavours.

Here we give you the low-down on the island that’s got something for everyone… The Climate

The ‘meze’ is synonymous with Cyprus. Using a variety of small dishes to create a feast, a meze is a great way to get a taste of the island’s local tastes, like braised, stewed, and clay-cooked meats, dips, freshly caught fish, pulses and legumes in various sauces, speciality cheeses and delicatessen cuts.

St. John’s First School celebrate Shakespeare Week The children at St. John’s First school in Bishops Wood have recently celebrated Shakespeare week.

The school with its 68 pupils had a whole day doing activities around Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet. The children started watching clips from Gnomeo and Juliet. From this the children planned a masked ball and banquet. The children cooked food from Tudor times and made masks. They rehearsed Tudor dancing ready for the ball and banquet. During the afternoon, they performed the dance to each other and had their banquet.

“The children thoroughly enjoyed the day” said Emma Challiner, Headteacher of the first school. “It is so great to do whole school cross curricular days. The buzz from the children throughout the day was amazing.”

Hospice calls on local gardeners for help! Katharine House Hospice is calling on green

fingered supporters to open their gardens this summer to help raise funds for the care of local people with progressive illnesses. The beautiful gardens of Stafford and the surrounding area are well known – as is the generosity of local people. In previous years, garden owners have charged a small admission fee to their gardens to help raise funds for Katharine house Hospice whilst visitors admired the fruits of their labour. Emma Whitehurst, Community Fundraiser at Katharine House Hospice said: “every year our supporters amaze us at the levels they go to help raise funds for local people in our care. Open gardens have become real community days where neighbours, friends and visitors alike help us to raise vital funds by supporting the beautiful gardens.” “With Summer just around the corner, we would be delighted if keen gardeners would consider supporting the Hospice this summer and we would urge interested local gardeners to get in touch. In opening their garden gates to the public they are making a real difference to the lives of our patients and their families.” Katharine House Hospice provides free care for local people living with a progressive illness and support for their families. The Hospice began as a “Hospice at Home” service in 1989 and now provides a range of free services at the Hospice and in the community. Each year it costs the Hospice £2.9m to provide care and this is largely

people and business who help to provide 75% of the funds required. If you would like to find out more about
