BBC Bargain Hunt Filming at Number One Events Antiques fairs organisers Number One Events are pleased to announce that at the request of the BBC, they will once again be playing host to Bargain Hunt at their next event on the 16th and 17th May at Stafford Showground’s Prestwood Centre.

Andy thanks big hearted auctioneers It is not always a case of going, going, gone at Cuttlestones - the big hearted auctioneers just cannot stop giving to local children with disabilities and terminal illness.

Since April 1, 2014, Cuttlestones’ Penkridge and Wolverhampton auction houses have handed over £6,529 to Cannock based charity Newlife Foundation for Disabled Children, with all the money spent on local children with disabilities and terminal illness.

One of the beneficiaries of Cuttlestones generosity was 13–year-old Andy Speke who visited the auctioneers Pinfold Lane premises in Penkridge to show the staff his new powered wheelchair. Andy has Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type Two and is a full time power wheelchair user who had outgrown his old equipment. He can now maintain his independence and his quality of life has improved.

“Meeting Andy and his nan Beverley was a pleasure,” said Cuttlestones MD Ben Gamble. “He is a happy lad who is going to school every day and battling against obstacles.

“We know for sure that the monies raised are going to people who really need it and have often been turned down for assistance through other channels.”

Andy and his brother Dean are cared for by grandmother Beverley Speke, who is full of praise for the UK’s leading children’s disability charity.

“Newlife have always been there to help,” said Beverley.

“They are fantastic – without their help we would have ended up without it.

“The new chair gives Andy independence and he is able to ‘walk to school’ on his own. If Andy didn’t get his new chair he would hate it.

“He would need someone to take him to school. He is very bright and top of the class – it is just these muscular problems.

“I have seen many kids who have been helped by Newlife - they are always there to help.”

Statutory services often have a responsibility to make equipment provision – but when help is declined, Newlife steps in. The charity challenges many such decisions and has an impressive success rate.

However, when Newlife is unable overturn these decisions it provides the equipment through a

Newlife Lead Nurse Karen Dobson added: “We are glad the equipment we were able to give the family made a difference when Andy needed it.

“We always aim to provide a listening ear for families when they are at their most vulnerable; they need someone to understand their situation and support them getting the help they need when they need it. Even if they are not sure what this is, our nurses have years of experience to help guide them to the best solution.”

Newlife Local, launched at the beginning of March, enables local people to find out who needs help in their county right now and highlights the support the charity gives vulnerable families. Write Here, Write Now, ‘Write’ Wins!

St Dominic’s High School for Girls Team win Area Finals It could have been a daunting experience, presenting to a panel of judges as well as a room full of contemporaries and dignitaries, at Yarnfield Park Business Centre but eight teams of teenage entrepreneurs from schools in the Stone and Stafford area were un-phased on Wednesday 25th March.

Having set up their Trade Stands in one of the meeting rooms, up to 4 members of each team delivered a 4 minute Business presentation as part of the Young Enterprise programme.

Since September 2014, the students have created their own company, developed and produced a product and sold to the public in as many ways as possible. The competition on the evening is judged on three elements, the Trade Fair which was held in February, a detailed Company Report as well as the presentation made by the students.

On the night, awards were presented by Mike Cousins from Wedgewood and Councillor Cathy Collier, Mayor of Stone. First place went to ‘Write’ from St Dominics High School for Girls in Brewood for their range of children’s books based on the curriculum requirements for Key Stage 1 and 2.

They have taken their initial idea, used the skills within the team to develop it into a great product which has sold well and has a lot of potential. Their presentation was outstanding too - in Young Enterprise, as in business, everything counts. I wish them every success in the County Finals in May.” Second Place went to Ad Astra from Alleyne’s Academy. Their product, inspired by the recent enthusiasm for baking, was a series of stencil sets for decorating cakes and drinks. Ad Astra also won the Innovation Award.

The event was sponsored by Yarnfield Park Training and Conference Centre, Stafford Borough Council and the Wedgwood Group who again provided the fantastic awards. Stafford and Stone Young Enterprise Board would like to express their gratitude for their generosity.

The next stage of the competition is the County Finals, to be hosted by Wedgwood in their premises in Barlaston. The team from St Dominics High School for Girls will be up against teams from Uttoxeter, Stoke on Trent and Lichfield. We wish ‘Write’ every success in the County Finals and beyond.

Déjà Vu - The (Un)Changing Face of Glasses When NHS spectacles were first introduced they were of the John Lennon type – a small rounded eye-shape with plain gold rims. The style made a huge comeback in the 1980s and the look was revived once more following the Harry Potter films.

The classic American 40’s ‘combination’ style of plastic sides and ‘hoods’ over a metal rim – another style that briefly returned in the 1980s is once again appearing in manufacturers catalogues.

The original plastic ‘Wayfarer’

made a strong comeback in the 80’s as a ‘retro’ style, leading to the establishment of the designer sunglasses market. That and the 1950s Buddy Holly style, in innumerable variations, is once again in vogue as ‘geek chic’.

In the last year or so, that other Rayban classic, the Aviator, has been revived and so has the 1960s upswept ‘cat eye’ style.

Dementia Awareness Week 17-23 May Can I avoid getting Dementia?

If you want a guarantee, at the present time, then the answer is no. Dementia is regularly in the news, and new discoveries are made on a daily basis through the massive investment across the World in research.

Dementia Awareness Week is 17th-23rd May and it would be fantastic if a breakthrough could be announced. But at the time of writing, there is no certain way to prevent dementia.

Engaging in arts and crafts is very much in the news at present with research in the US indicating that engaging in activities, socialising and keeping the brain active does seem to stave off mild cognitive impairment (pre-dementia). It was a small sample and limited its study to ‘craft’ related activities.

More work is anticipated in this area. We use a wide range of activities as part of our day opportunities for people with dementia and other complex needs, including arts and crafts, telephone 01785 788481.

There are however some general consideration that we can make to improve our lifestyle and guard against Dementia (NHS). It also guards against other complaints that are prevailent in later life.

Dementia Friends learn a little bit about what it’s like to live with dementia and turns that understanding into action. This could be helping someone find the right bus or being patient in a till queue if someone with dementia is taking longer to pay. Visit of Tracy Edwards to Stafford Gatehouse Theatre

Organised by Stafford Coastal Cruising Club Yachtswoman Tracy Edwards is visiting the Gatehouse Theatre in April to talk about her life in yacht racing.

Tracy Edwards won international fame in 1989 as the skipper of the first all female crew to sail around the world in the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race. The boat won two legs and came second overall in class. The best result for a British boat since 1977. Popular opinion at the time was that a team comprising all women stood no chance at all!

In 1990 Tracy was awarded Sportswoman of the Year and an MBE. She was the first woman to achieve acceptance by the British yachting community and paved the way for other women, notably Dawn Riley and Ellen MacArthur to follow.

Following her groundbreaking success with Maiden, Tracy went on to break many more records in a truly marvelous yachting career.

Tracy recently found out that the boat in which she achieved fame was languishing in a state of disrepair on an island in the Indian Ocean. In Tracy’s talk at the Gatehouse Theatre, as well as telling about her experiences in yacht racing, she will update us on her efforts to salvage her old boat, bring it back to Britain and restore it to its former glory.

Tracy will also have with her a limited number of copies of her book for signing and for sale. Katharine House Hospice calls on local people to sponsor a nurse Stafford based Katharine House Hospice is urging local people and businesses to help support its vital work in the community by sponsoring an hour of nursing care at the Hospice.

The Hospice is calling on local people to sponsor an hour or more of a nurses’ time in the care of local people at Katharine House Hospice. The Hospice exists largely because of the support of local people – the Sponsor a Nurse appeal is one example of how people can help the Hospice.

Sunshine Brings Out Record Numbers to Bank Holiday Market…

Owners of Penkridge Market were delighted by the good weather yesterday (6th April) as they saw their busiest ever Bank Holiday Market! As temperatures soared, so did their visitor numbers, with thousands of customers flocking to the Market as well as a record number of ‘Car Booters’.

Matt Williams, Manager of Penkridge Market said: “Our Bank Holiday Markets are always busy, but yesterday was exceptional. The Market and Car Boot Sale run until 3pm, but the crowds normally start to diminish and ‘Car Booters’ start to pack away around 1pm. However this year, we were busy right throughout the day and ‘Car Booters’ were still selling their goods at 3pm – we’ve never had a Market like it.”

However, if you would like to attend one of the popular Bank Holiday Markets, then don’t worry; Penkridge will be holding two more fantastic Bank Holiday Markets plus Car Boot Sales, on Monday the 4th May and 25th May. The events will run from 9am to 3pm, and admission and parking are free!

There will be plenty of refreshments available from a variety of stalls, as well as The Old Deanery Farm Cafe, which serves a wide range of hot and cold food from a bacon sandwich to delicious fish and chips.

Around 70 market stall holders will be there selling a wide range of goods, including delicious produce such as local cheeses, breads and olives, to homemade pork pies, chutneys and cakes. As well as all this fabulous food on offer, there will be plants, tools, books, gifts, clothes, toys and soft furnishings, to name but a few.

Armchair Mortgages Ltd Protecting your lifestyle Insurance- How important is it? Well sorry to state but in this country we attach very little importance to it. Yes, we insure our property if we own it or have a mortgage and yes we insure our car. The common denominator with both products is they are compulsory if you have a mortgage as the lender needs to protect their interests and of course you should not be driving a car unless you are insured.

Generally speaking insuring the contents of your home is normally taken out by sensible people wishing to cover the costs involved of replacing valuable and/or sentimental items in the event of an accident or theft, and of course holiday insurance offering peace of mind in the event of an accident or illness abroad, fine so far.

Now move on to other insurance products on the market and this is sometimes hard to comprehend but people insure their mobile phones, satellite dish, laptop, kindle, garden tools, all replaceable for a few hundred pounds, not going to go there with the cat and the dog!!! All the aforementioned items need paying for, which comes from the income people earn whilst working. What if for some reason that income stops how do people cope with all this expenditure? You still have to pay the monthly mortgage cost on top of the compulsory insurance policies or there is a danger of losing your home, why do you think all these house auctions you see on TV take place? It’s because over 55% of people with a mortgage have not given enough serious consideration to the what if question. Most think it will never happen to me, I am healthly and will never be made redundant, wrong. We read about accidents all the time and fairly young people being diagnosed with all manner of illnesses. So going back to the house auctions scenario it’s because in most cases the lender has re-possessed the property as the borrowers have defaulted. This can be caused by the death of one of the borrowers, redundancy, a critical or long terms illness that prevents one of the couples going to work, especially harmfull if it’s the main or only income coming in every month. Imagine the heart ache for a young mother at home with children and she has to move out of the family home because the breadwinner, her partner, has died?

So, what are the options to protect the home being re-possessed? The cheapest option in the event of premature death by one of the borrowers is Mortgage Protection. This is designed to pay off the mortgage and because the amount paid out reduces in line with the amount owed to the lender it makes the monthly premium very affordable, especially for younger couples and more so if they are both non smokers. Once the monthly premium is calculated this will never increase so over a typical 25 year term of the mortgage this becomes very cost effective in later years. Critical illness can be taken out with the policy, which of course would increase the cost as there is more chance of the provider having to pay out over the time the policy runs for. Critical Illness pays out a lump sum on diagnosis of a range of illnesses listed on the policy document and typically they include cancer, heart attack, stroke, total and permanent disability etc. Once again the younger the applicant the cheaper it will be and of course it will centre around affordability at the time.

The other area to consider is to protect income in the event of not being able to work due to illness or redundancy. Some borowers like the Accident, Sickness & Redundancy product as this covers everything apart from death but has it’s limitations as the policy only pays out for 12 or 24 months, depending on which provider you use. If redundancy is not a great concern Permanent Health Insurance, commonly known as Income Protection, is a better option as it will provide the income for as long as the claiment is off work. So a 35 year old with a nominated retirement age of 65 who will never work again because of ill health would receive around 60% of their income until aged 65. As an example against earnings of £30000 per year the policy would pay out £18000 for the next 30 years, that’s £540000 overall, and under current legislation would be tax free.

So the message is clear, do not leave yourself unprotected and risk losing your home for the sake of a few pounds a month as it just doesn’t make sense. I am really looking forward to your telephone call.
