Celebrating Chinese New Year Wolgarston High School Wolgarston High School has been celebrating the dawning of the Chinese New Year on Friday 16 February. Students and staff have been busy taking

part in lots of different activities centred on Chinese culture, so that their students were able to see the similarities and differences between both UK and Chinese cultures. On 16th January Mr Paulauskas (House Leader of Alps and Teacher of Business, History and Humanities) and his Year 12 business studies students focused on how to be successful when doing business in China, especially how Chinese culture affects your approach to business. “I think it is fundamental for our students to learn about how a country’s culture and customs affects how their

On Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25th January Mrs Beach (Teacher of Technology), Mrs Tracey (Science

and Technology Technician) and their Year 10 Hospitality and Catering students all took part in Chinese New Year themed lessons. Students were asked to bring in items or create an information sheet about Chinese New Year. “Every year as a school we have fun learning about Chinese New Year,” Said Mrs Beach, “All of my students have enjoyed learning about the health benefits of a Chinese diet as well as being to make their own Chinese food which they can now cook at home and enjoy with their families and their friends. This year we have chosen to look at how to make spring rolls and the techniques used in Chinese cuisine to fold and wrap the pastry as well as creating its seasoned vegetable filling.”

“Every year it is great to see our students so excited about learning about different cultures,” said Mrs Tracey, “It is a privilege to be able to support our students in

these lessons, they are so much fun.”

Roberts (Learning Resources Centre Administrator), “I have discussed with some of the students of how Chinese scholars such as Yu Hua are concerned about the decline in the amount of books students are reading in China. As the famous Chinese proverb states, Intelligence is endowed, but wisdom is learned.” 2018 is year of the Dog, the new year starts from 16th February 2018 up until 4th March 2019. The dog is the eleventh animal in the Chinese zodiac. The Dog is the symbol of loyalty and honesty. People born in the year of the Dog possess the best traits of human nature. They are honest, friendly, faithful, loyal, smart, straightforward, stubborn, vunerable and have a strong sense of responsibility. If you know someone who was born in 2007 or 1995 their Chinese zodiac sign is the dog. Here are some famous people who are born in the year of the dog; Prince William, Kate Middleton, Justin Bieber, Tommy Lee Jones and Mariah Carey.

Lichfield’s Maple Hayes Dyslexia School to host free SEN workshop for parents Lichfield’s Maple Hayes Dyslexia School is

National Trust Staffordshire Centre Upcoming Talks Programme Charles Darwin

Walled Gardens: A Brief History

Tuesday 13th March

Tuesday 10th April

Charles Darwin naturalist, geologist and biologist was one of Britain’s most famous and influential scientists. He was born and received his early education in Shrewsbury. At first his father wanted him to become a doctor then that having failed sent him to Cambridge in the hope he would enter the church. That also failed. Darwin obtained an excellent degree and was immediately invited, on a self funding basis, to join HMS Beagle. So began his life’s work. Derek Holloway our speaker will explore aspects of Darwin’s life.

Helen Johnson, Museum Development officer from Staffordshire Archives and Heritage Service will take us on a gardening ramble through the history of the walled garden from its origins in medieval Britain to the technological innovations of the nineteenth century when the pineapple was king! The talk will look at how the use and design of walled gardens developed over time as changes in fashion and horticulture influenced new ideas. This talk will take place after a brief AGM.

All talks are held at 2:30pm at Walton Village Hall, Stafford. All welcome. There is a small entry fee to cover expenses. March 2018

Back Pain Back pain is a debilitating condition which is said to affect seven out of ten adults at some point in their lives. It’s often difficult for the individual to say exactly what caused the problem. However typical triggers include: • Standing, sitting or bending down for long periods • Lifting, pushing or pulling loads that are too heavy • Bending from your back instead of your knees and hips • Falling or tripping up • Stress or anxiety meaning your muscles are tense • Being overweight • Generally having poor posture More serious back conditions may be unrelated to any of these factors however. A slipped disc, osteoporosis or a fracture are extremely painful and will need medical attention, but are fortunately quite rare.

March 2018

Although you might recognise the cause of your back pain and resolve to avoid the triggers in the future, in the short term relief will be the highest priority. The first thing to remember is that bed rest can actually aggravate low back pain, so only go to bed in order to sleep. You should stay active and continue your daily routine as normally as you can. Relief can often be gained by applying hot or cold packs, or using an over-the-counter gel that contains pain relief or has antiinflammatory properties. A normal painkiller (aspirin, paracetamol or ibuprofen) will also be very effective so do take these as often as recommended. Finally, although on-going severe pain will need a visit to your GP, if your back or neck problem has occurred as a result of a strain or a bad sleeping position, many physiotherapists will be able to see you the same day and will be able to offer advice to prevent a reoccurrence of the problem.

Bowmans Antiques Fair

WIN TICKETS to the next event 40 years ago, a Newcastle under Lyme woman, living in exile in Yorkshire had a bold and exciting vision. A lively entrepreneur and antiques enthusiast who was rapidly making a name and her business for herself by running first an antiques shop and then a growing antique fair circuit across Yorkshire and then further afield from Malvern to Darlington via Lincoln, Harrogate, Leeds, Doncaster and Barnsley. It was on a trip back to her roots in Staffordshire that Elizabeth Bowman discovered the newly built Stafford Bingley Hall - all 6000 square metres of it and had the tremendous courage to begin to build the Bowman Antiques Fairs flagship event. The Bingley Hall was at that time the largest commercial indoor space available for rent outside of London and predated the NEC. The Potential was recognised and the decision taken, the Bowman Antiques Fair at Stafford Bingley Hall had its first outing in October 1978 and was popular and well supported from its inception growing steadily to its millennium peak of 424 stands. The Fair contained a wide and attractive range of antiques of all types at a wide range of prices, with a particular emphasis on antique furniture and as you might expect being in the potteries a very good showing of ceramics. Those of you of a certain vintage may also remember The Bingley Hall as a major concert venue in the 1970s and 1980s. The Bingley Hall was also an important agricultural

28

centre and held many livestock related events. When the hall was full of antique pottery and porcelain we had more than one local wag tell us that what we had done was put “china in a bull shop” particularly when the Bowman Fairs followed on closely behind a prime stock or Cattle show. So after 40 years, Bowman Fairs still run a 3 day antiques fair at the Bingley Hall and Helen Bowman, the daughter of the founder of the fair now manages the fair with her husband and after 300 plus events and some 4500 different exhibitors who have stood with us selling

about a million antiques and collectables over four decades, it is a testament to the vision and boldness of Elizabeth (Betty) Bowman who sadly passed away in November 2017. We are proud of her achievement. We share her vision and her passion for the old, the rare, the beautiful and the historic. The legacy we feel most profoundly is Betty’s unshakeable belief in the benefits of small business and her unstinting support for all the small local businesses she supported in her life and work.

WIN TICKETS TO BOWMANS ANTIQUES FAIR Bowmans Antiques have 10 tickets to give away for their next event being held at Bingley Hall on 23rd, 24th and 25th March. Answer the question below and send in on a postcard to 89 Kirkgate, Shipley, Yorkshire, BD18 3LR or via email to info@antiquesfairs.com before Monday 19th March to be in with a chance of winning.

Question: What year was the first Bowmans Antiques Fair held at Bingley Hall? All postal entries must be submitted before Monday 19th March. Entries must include your name, address and contact number. Please quote ‘The Penkridge Advertiser’ on entry. T’s&C’s apply.

A typical Monday meeting would consist of a talk with PowerPoint presentation or slides, or a talk with a demonstration of some craft or skill. Subjects can be as diverse as Black Country Humour, Memories of a Lady Police Officer from Cadet to Inspector, Bell Ringing, Life as a Pantomime Dame, My work as a Silversmith, and the Adventures of a Town Crier. Where possible members are invited to take part, which at times provides much hilarity. See below for our programme for the early part of this year:

Bad Dog Designs Nixie Clocks By Paul Parry

It’s not everyday you come across Nixie clocks – most people have never even heard of them, let alone seen one.

42

Paul Parry started making these clocks as a hobby in his spare bedroom back in 2014. The Nixie Tubes were invented in the 1950’s as numerical indicators in early computers and other equipment, their popularity died overnight as soon as the LED was invented and then production worldwide ceased in the 1980’s. They do however have a wonderful warm orange glow due to the neon gas inside and a great retro look and feel.

and brass with gears and pipework on display.

What started as a hobby has now grown into a full time business, Paul retired from his day job at the end of 2017 to become the UK’s only full time Nixie Clock maker. Each clock is different and made from upcycled or redundant bits of equipment that would otherwise have been thrown into landfill. A lot of the clocks are made in the Steampunk style, a retro futuristic genre, think HG Wells and Jules Verne all made from wood

The clocks are sought after by clock and art collectors all over the world, the majority of Pauls pieces are commissioned and end up in the USA or the far East. Some have appeared on TV and many magazines have featured Pauls designs. Paul also won the international Arts & Crafts design award in 2016 for his work, along with the Theo Paphitis Small business award.

Clare celebrates record year with Aussie singer Peter Andre A Slimming World Consultant from Penkridge was

congratulated on helping slimmers to lose weight and change their lives by singer and TV presenter Peter Andre.

Clare Johnston, who runs a Slimming World group at Haling

Dene Centre, Penkridge every Monday and Peace Memorial Hall Pinfold Lane, Stafford every Tuesday, was delighted to get a chance to cuddle up to Peter when he presented the

annual Slimming World Awards. The Mysterious Girl singer co-hosted the event with the organisation’s founder and chair Margaret Miles-Bramwell OBE.

Clare said Peter’s presence at the awards was extra special because earlier in 2017 he supported Slimming World’s

most successful fundraising event ever – The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw, which raised a record-breaking £3.3 million in just two weeks. The annual clothes throw

encourages Slimming World’s 900,000 group members to donate the clothes, shoes, bags and accessories that are now too big for them to Cancer Research UK, by filling

up specially-branded bags and taking them along to their weekly group sessions.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the members of the Penkridge

group. Throughout 2017 they have lost fantastic amounts of weight, with many of them hitting their target weights, improving their health and boosting their confidence.

“It’s so rewarding to see people being able to do things

that they didn’t think were possible before losing weight,

whether that’s having more energy, feeling happier, wearing smaller clothes, taking up new hobbies, reducing

medication or doing more with their family and friends.

Every week I feel extremely lucky to play even a small part in people’s achievements and I felt very honoured to

represent the Penkridge group at the Slimming World Awards.

“Cuddling up to Peter was a real treat. He was bowled over by the difference Slimming World makes to people’s lives

and it reminded me what an important and privileged role I have as a Consultant. Now I’m heading into 2018 super motivated to support even more people in Penkridge to

be inspired to lose weight and lead healthier and happier lives.”

Clare adds: “Lots of people will be making resolutions to

March 2018

lose weight and improve their health this New Year. I truly

believe that joining a Slimming World group is the best way for people to lose weight, learn new habits and improve

their lifestyle. Thanks to our Food Optimising eating plan

they will see big results on the scales without ever having to feel hungry or deprived, and at the Penkridge group they’ll discover a whole world of support and advice that’s sure to help them achieve their targets – and have a lot of fun

along the way too! I’d love for anyone who’s thinking about

losing weight this January to join us at Haling Dene Centre, Penkridge every Monday and Peace Memorial Hall Pinfold Lane, Stafford every Tuesday.”

Peter, who set up his own foundation with Cancer Research UK – the Peter Andre Fund – after losing his brother to cancer, said he was thrilled to meet Clare at the event,

which was held at Birmingham’s International Convention Centre.

He added: “It was an honour to be invited to present the

Slimming World Awards. I met so many incredible people

who had lost amazing amounts of weight and transformed themselves – inside and out. While each of them was

inspirational in their own special way, the one thing they

all had in common was how much they felt they owed to

their “Slimming World family” in helping them to do things they always dreamed of and become the people they’ve

always wanted to be. Every one of them spoke passionately about how they couldn’t have made the changes they had to eat more healthily and become more active without the support, advice and encouragement of their Consultant

and group every week. So there’s absolutely no doubt in

my mind that Slimming World and people like Clare are very special.”

To be inspired to discover the real you with Slimming World in 2018 call Clare on 07540 230320 or visit

Introducing our Head Chef - Patrick Bond ‘Paddy’ From a very young age Paddy had a desire to work within professional and highly regarded establishments. “My passion has led me to be a creative person with a high level of attention to detail. I am an avid learner that takes an interest in all areas within the catering and hotel industry”. This passion drove him to his first kitchen at 13 and upon finishing school, he left Wolgarston High School to study catering at University College Birmingham, graduation took him to his first professional role locally in the Lewis Partnership. His desire to learn and work with the best drove his ambition, this couldn’t be achieved locally and a dream realised, 3 years working for Chef Patron Raymond Blanc at Le Manoir, still burning with ambition he set off to New York working in several different style restaurants

perfecting his culinary skills, whilst there, a further opportunity presented and in January 2016, he was off for Necker Island, Sir Richard Branson’s Private Island as Senior Pastry Chef. Before returning to his roots he had a further brief stint in New York, but home is where the heart is, and is now putting his take into well cooked, great tasting, wholesome pub food at The Boat Inn, Penkridge. “I’m loving my time at The Boat, it’s giving me the opportunity to bring all my experience to my village local, the recipe I’ve decided to showcase, is this winter’s bestselling dish at The Boat Inn, Beef Cheek Bourguignon, I hope you enjoy” -

Penkridge Peace Memorial Hall In need of New Committee Members Penkridge Peace Memorial Hall is situated in Pinfold Lane and is owned by the people of Penkridge. The Hall is a registered charity (522711) and a fantastic facility for the village that is available to hire at reasonable prices. A small committee that meets 4 or 5 times a year manages the hall and we are in need of new committee members. Committee members help run fundraising events for the hall and take care of the day to day running and maintenance. This is not an arduous task but as the average age of the current committee is rising we need a few younger people to join us to ensure the continuation of this excellent facility.

A New Look For Your Home by Helen Taylor

It’s the perfect time of year to transform your home into the stylish living space you’ve always wanted. Winter is almost over, so there’s no reason to put off redecorating, restyling and redesigning the rooms in your home for a totally inspired new look. Whether you are planning on making small improvements

or a radical change, any alterations are sure to lift tired spaces and provide a new

lease of life for dated décor.

Decide on the overall style you want to achieve. If your house is a period property and all rooms boast character features, then work with history by emphasising those unique points, but add your own modern twist by choosing up-to-date accessories and colour schemes. Past and present combined will create a truly chic look.

Bold, bright shades and statement wallpapers work well as accents in larger rooms, but if you’re lacking space, a softer scheme will be far more appropriate.

For the modern home, try out striking style ideas that are thoroughly contemporary. Use statement furnishings and accessories to add interest to plain rooms and maximise space with sleek lines and light colours. When considering a drastic change in colour scheme, be sure to plan for how your

current furnishings will look. If you haven’t got the budget to purchase all new items, think about choosing a colour that will compliment what you’ve already got.

52

Take notice of current trends, but be sure that the items you chose will have enough longevity to last until you want to re-design your room again.

Replace neutral shades of cream, brown and white with light greys and soft pastel hues for a brand new take on minimalist style.

Penkridge Market

Easter Bank Holiday Market If you’re looking for somewhere to go this Easter Bank Holiday, then why not pop along to Penkridge Market, where they will be holding a Bank Holiday Market and Car Boot Sale, on Monday the 2nd April. The event will run from 9am to 3pm and with free admission and free parking, it’s a great free day out for all the family. Around 100 market stall holders will be selling everything from bread, olives and pickles, to plants, handbags and hardware. There’s an indoor market as well as a hard standing area, so it’s a fantastic day out, whatever the weather. There will also be plenty to keep the children entertained, with a bouncy castle on site, as well as toy stalls, sweets and ice-creams.

Matt Williams, Manager of Penkridge Market said: “Our Bank Holiday Markets are always very popular, but our Easter one always seems to be the busiest. I think people are keen to get out and about after the Winter and love hunting out a bargain. Our Car Boot is always busy too, with people having a good ‘Spring Clean’ and wanting to turn their unwanted possessions into cash. Our hard standing area also means there’s no muddy fields, so it’s a brilliant day out whatever the weather.” There will be plenty of refreshments available too, from Jacket Potatoes, Burgers and Ice-cream to delicious fish and chips at The Old Deanery Farm Café.

If you fancy a bargain then don’t miss the Car Boot Sale, with approximately 50 ‘car booters’ expected. You’ll be amazed at what you can find - everything from tools and toys, to books, CD’s, clothes, and even the odd antique. If you want to take part yourself and turn some of your unwanted possessions into cash, then simply turn up on the day from 6am. The site is all hard standing (so no muddy fields) and with a fee of just £8 per car, you’re bound to make a great profit.

FSC Investment Services Limited Why your ISA could be losing you money In a recent review of Cash ISA rates. The best we could find was +1.16% on a fixed one-year term from the Leeds Building society. (Source www.money.co.uk 5th February 2018). The current consumer prices index (inflation) rate (CPIH includes owner occupier housing costs) for December to January 2017 was +2.7%. If the investment returns on your money are rising at +1.16% per annum and the cost of the goods is rising at +2.7% per annum, your real returns are giving you a loss of -1.54% per annum. Based on the above example, had you invested £20,000 in the above cash ISA your return would be £232.00. The amount needed to retain the buying power of your capital would have needed to be about £540.00. Therefore the net loss would be -£308.00.

on a one to one basis completely free of charge. At your meeting we will demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages of investing in all the different types of ISA’s including some specialist ISA’s and even a low risk ISA that has given investors an average return of over +8% per annum net since 2009. (Source Trustnet 5th February 2018) Please note that the value of investments may go up and down and you may not get back the full amount you originally invested. Mayor Unveils School’s New Website At Charity Coffee Morning To coincide with a very special visit from the Mayor of Stafford on Monday 12th February, Church Eaton Primary School invited local residents to a charity coffee morning.

The event was also an opportunity to show off some very exciting technological developments at the school, by formally launching the school’s new improved website -demonstrated on the school’s new IPads, which were funded by the school PTA. The IPads are a fantastic new resource for pupils and were presented to the children by members of the PTA. The Mayor had a tour of the school with the Head Girl and Head Boy. The pupils then had the opportunity to have an interesting Q&A session with the Mayor and to hear about the fascinating history of the mace and the Mayor’s role. The coffee morning was then held in the school hall. Not only was it very enjoyable, it helped raise £150 for ‘House Of Bread’. This gathering was another demonstration of how valued the school is to the local community, with the children (and Mayor)

interacting with local residents. Members of the community were able to enjoy light refreshments, including tantalizing homemade cakes, as well as having the opportunity to listen to the pupils’ beautiful singing. Church Eaton Primary School is classed as ‘GOOD’ by OFSTED. Pre-reception and Reception places are available at this nurturing, rural school where pupils thrive in a caring environment with strong family values. The school offers the option of wrap-around care for Pre-Reception pupils. There is also a before and after school club on-site which is invaluable for working parents. Church Eaton Primary School enjoys excellent facilities including an expansive, well maintained playing field and a beautiful dipping pond. With an adventure playground to keep the older children busy recreationally, for the younger children, there is a modern multi-surface playground.
