Waterside dining at lock No. 26… Here we take a look at the new bar and dining venue, No. 26, at Stone’s renowned waterside eatery Aston Marina…

Named for the number of the nearest lock on the neighbouring Trent and Mersey canal, No.26 sees the marina’s award-winning kitchen team expand on the repertoire of dishes found in the popular Bistro restaurant. With continued emphasis on showcasing the finest seasonal, locally produced ingredients the new dining space quadruples the capacity of The Bistro and includes a bar area where visitors can enjoy drinks ranging from coffees to locally produced beers, wines from an extensive wine list and house cocktails.

MAKE TIME FOR FAMILY, GOOD FRIENDS, AND GOOD FOOD

In terms of design and layout, echoes of the marina’s farm shop heritage can be found in the décor, with luxurious textiles and feature lighting contrasting wood, slate and rope accents. The centrepiece of the space will be a wood burning stove whilst huge glazed panels will allow light to flood the space and make the most of views over the marina. For its launch at the end of May, chefs developed a menu featuring fresh pizzas from a new wood fired oven and some Great Taste Award-winning classics from the Bistro menu alongside brand new, seasonal dishes. The menu includes extensive options for vegetarian, gluten free and younger diners with dishes are designed to reflect seasonal produce and breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served daily. No.26 opened its doors to the public in late May 2017 and the full menu can be viewed at www.astonmarina.co.uk. To be among the first to enjoy this new dining experience, make a reservation on 01785 819702 or email, info@astonmarina.co.uk

Sheds are popular targets for burglars as they are often overlooked when security is being considered. If you store valuables or tools in them, you should secure these as well. Even if there isn’t anything of value in your shed or garage, burglars can use equipment stored in them such as forks, chisels and screwdrivers to break into your home. Shed Security Some simple tips can help make your shed less vulnerable to an opportunist thief: • Make sure that your shed door, door frame and walls are solid. • Replace any damaged or rotten areas with new sections. • Try to place the shed door facing your house and not too close to a perimeter wall or gate. • Fit two closed shackle padlocks on strong padlock hasps - one a third of the way up from the bottom of the door and one a third of the way down from the top of the door. • Fit wire mesh or bars on the inside of your window frames. • Consider integrating your shed into your home alarm system, especially if you have valuable items in it. Use door contact sensors and check your glass is secure before installing break glass sensors. • Illuminate the area around your shed using dusk till dawn lighting. • Consider keeping valuable items in a strong lockable box or cage. Secure the cabinet to the shed using strong bolts or heavy duty screws. • Wrap a strong chain around and through the handles of garden tools, lawn mowers, cycles etc and secure the chain to the wall using a padlock or a ground anchor fixed to the base of the shed. • Mark your power tools and advertise that they are marked. Visit www.immobilise.com to register your valuables for free on their database. Items that are recovered by or handed in to police are checked on Immobilise. This helps police reunite property with owners more effectively.

The Empty House By Diane Pike

Poetry - Love it or Loath it? Personally, I’m not sure! But, like it or not, we hear and read poetry every day in nursery rhymes, advert jingles, song lyrics, silly joke rhymes, birthday cards, wedding cards and in much, much more. Poetry is all about writing ‘words’ that express our feelings or describe our situations, and in many cases, both of those things.

I wrote ‘THE EMPTY HOUSE’ as an illustrated poem. Why?

Kaffeine

Because every time I took a certain journey I would pass a tiny little derelict house, and, not knowing what it might be like inside – I began to imagine a visit!

Your local coffee shop, situated in the heart of Penkridge.

‘It appears that the old house has nothing to offer anymore as a means of shelter, but after further visits, the writer discovers that this is not quite the case.’ –

Serving breakfast, lunch, drinks and coffee

‘I went to the empty house today, The house without a door. And all I saw were cracked panes And a dirty, broken floor.’

Seasonal Recipe: Home-made Burgers

All You Need To Know! It’s the barbecue season and nothing tastes better than delicious home-made chargrilled burgers. Follow these top tips for the best burgers around… June 2017

• Always choose good quality premium minced steak for the best flavour but pick one that has some fat in it – don’t buy extra lean mince as the burgers will dry out too much during cooking. Try asking your local butcher to mince some rump or chuck steak with about 20% fat content. For four quarter pounder burgers you’ll need 500g mince. • Mince is fairly bland so you’ll need to add plenty of flavouring. Grated or very finely chopped onion and minced garlic form the basic flavouring but you add whatever dried or fresh herb, spice or seasoning you like. You’ll need to add 5-10ml (1-2tsp) salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper too. • A handful of fresh breadcrumbs and a little beaten egg will also help to bind the mince together and prevent the burgers from breaking up during cooking. Whizz all the ingredients in a food processor until the mixture starts holding together or use clean hands to mix as thoroughly as possible.

• Shape the burgers into round flat discs with wetted hands. To get perfectly round shapes press the mixture into a metal pastry cutter. Don’t over handle the burgers or they will be tough and dry when cooked. • Ensure that burgers are cooked all the way through and there is no pinkness in the middle. To check this press the burger down with a fish slice – if there are pink juices oozing out then cook for a few more minutes. • If you want a change from the classic sesame seed bun why not serve the cooked burgers on top of wedges of toasted ciabatta bread spread with a little mustard mayo or pack into warmed and split pitta breads with salad or coleslaw. • Try a fresh tomato relish instead of ketchup – just peel and finely dice a couple of ripe plum tomatoes and mix with a little olive oil, fresh chopped basil, a pinch of sugar and salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Penkridge WI

May Meeting Update

The Penkridge WI meeting was held on Monday 8th

May at 7:30pm. It was opened by the President, Sandra

Bailey, followed by the secretary, Sheila Moulton, reading notices and announcing future events.

One of these was a meal, booked by Vicky Atkins, at the

Shoal Hill Tavern in Cannock later in the week. There were 13 ladies from the group there and they all enjoyed their meals and the chance to have a good chat with each other.

Another event we are looking forward to is a day trip to

Matton Hall and Bakewell this month. Thanks go to Jackie Sharman for organising this.

Sheila then put on her ‘guest speaker hat’ and introduced everyone to the art of ‘Tintinnabulation.’ This was a name

which, to most, meant nothing but then we were introduced to its meaning of ‘bell ringing.’ What followed this was an evening that was extremely informative and a lot of fun.

Various members of the group volunteered to have a go with

the bells Sheila had brought with her. They were heavier than we’d anticipated and we tried, some successfully and one

or two not at first, to create a tune of sorts. The experience created much hilarity but it was also taken seriously and

we managed, under Sheila’s excellent demonstrating and supervision, to ring a recognisable tune.

The ladies, in the photo, keenly waiting to try out their new

skills are; Pauline Smith, Lyn Davidson, Christine Pace and Stella Winfield. Many thanks to Sheila, who is an active member of the Tintinnabulation group in Gnosall, for providing us with such an entertaining evening.

Our next meeting is on Monday, 5th June at 7:30pm in Penkridge Methodist Church Hall. New members are always welcome.

Afternoon Tea with Georgie’s Canal Cruises Georgie’s Canal Cruises was established back in November 2016. After undergoing 6 months of renovations at JD Boats at Gailey, the boat was then renamed Georgie Kate from Stanley Rose and was relocated to Teddesley. Jess, owner of Georgie’s Canal Cruises first started baking at home after leaving her role as a restaurant manager over 3 years ago. She started her own bakery shortly after, Georgie’s Butterfly Bakery which is named after her daughter, Georgie. “I started to fall in love with all the wonderful pieces of vintage china around and thought it would be a lovely addition to the cake business as a hire service on the side. I couldn’t hold my Mom back and she jumped aboard and helped me expand the collection.” said Jess.

2pm-4pm to Penkridge. Sunday Charters are from 12pm-2pm to Penkridge. You can book any number of persons up to 28 on any of these dates or enquire outside of these times for private hire, with a charter or stationary. Their dream turned in to a reality, Georgie’s Canal Cruises was founded and the boat Georgie Kate was born.

The Beacon Centre in Penkridge celebrates first birthday Leading sight loss charity The Beacon Centre is celebrating the first birthday of its site in Penkridge.

said: “We’ve had a fantastic first year and met some wonderful people.

The charity opened the doors to its Staffordshire shop in May 2016 and since then villagers have been able to visit to get advice on sight loss as well as pick up a range of goods including clothing, shoes and household items that are sold in aid of the organisation.

“Our Beacon Bus has made regular visits to the site in order to give people sight loss advice which will continue in the year ahead.

The shop has had a busy year, with customers bringing in a range of donations including a Vivienne Westwood coat. To mark the birthday staff will be holding a celebration event at the store in Stone Cross on May 27th between 9:30am and 4:30pm. There will be a tombola and raffle with prizes including a massage at Beauty House, a cut and finish at Wow Codsall and a personalized candle from Asprey and Clarke. There will also be a children’s lucky dip and cakes.

“We’ve had some amazing donations from our fabulous customers and we can’t thank them enough for their support. “We are always on the look-out for volunteers in the shop as well, no experience is needed. We’re a really friendly bunch and it is a great opportunity to meet new people.” To find out more about the volunteer opportunities you can ring the store on 01785 711114.

Customers on the day will also receive a free glass of wine. Beacon Centre’s Penkridge’s manager Emma Winder

New Black Country Book by Local Author Tales of Old Dudley Following on from his books about Penkridge, Brewood and Coven, local history writer Paul

Robinson has just published his latest title, this

time straying from our South Staffs villages to the

heart of the Black Country with ‘Tales of Old Dudley - A Catalogue of Crime, Accident & Misfortune’.

This fascinating book details hundreds of crimes and accidents that happened in Dudley and its neighbourhood during the nineteenth century. It includes accounts of explosions, fires, floods and other accidents, in industrial and residential settings, as well as mishaps on the roads, canals and railways. Separate chapters deal with murders, suicides, robberies and issues of public health, with the words of the individuals concerned used where possible. While famous criminal cases and accidents in the Black Country have been retold many times, the vast majority of the events in this book have not

appeared in print since they were first reported and therefore represent a fresh source of information for those with an interest in the history of the town.

The Midcounties Co-operative raise money for Katharine House Hospice Colleagues at The Midcounties Co-operative in Cannock and Hednesford have set their targets high and raised enough money to pay for a full 24 hours of hospice care. 12 sites across Cannock and Hednesford worked hard to raise an enormous £9,273.28. This covered the costs of every single care service Katharine House Hospice provided for one day including: Day Therapies Care for 15 patients, Inpatient Care for 7 patients, 11 Lymphoedema sessions, four Hospice at Home visits amongst other services such as bereavement support sessions. Corporate Fundraiser at Katharine House Hospice, Holly Addison

said; “It was an honour to work with The Midcounties Co-operative throughout the partnership. Their enthusiasm and determination to reach their total was remarkable and everyone involved should be extremely proud of their achievement.” Tracy Edwards, leadership team ambassador at The Midcounties Co-operative in Cannock and Hednesford said: “We’ve really enjoyed working with Katharine House Hospice over the past 18 months. Staffordshire Wills celebrates 10 years in business

not just about Wills or Powers of Attorney and Funeral plans I’m passionate about helping families plan to protect assets and to make the difficult times less stressful. Unfortunately, I have seen too much of

families losing all their hard-earned assets on care or disinheritance. Families struggling to retain control after their loved one loses capacity. There is not

enough accessible information out there. I regularly do free talks for Age UK, The Carers Association,

Alzheimers groups, Church groups etc. indeed anyone who will listen. If you need a speaker or just want free advice, call me! 01785 258446”.

Talking about the inevitable can be difficult. Over the last two years I have been associated with Safe Hands Funeral Plans who are the fastest growing Funeral Planning Company. They offer six prepaid funeral plans

Poultry Auctions Return to Penkridge Market Penkridge Market have announced today that they will be able to resume their weekly Poultry Auctions from this Wednesday (17th May 2017). The Market have been unable to sell live birds since mid-December due to the nationwide ban on gatherings (including auctions) of birds imposed by DEFRA to prevent the spread of Avian Flu. Today DEFRA have lifted the ban, giving permission to all traders in England to start selling live birds by auction again. Matt Williams, Manager of Penkridge Market said: “It has been a very difficult time for us, but obviously we understand that these control measures need to be put in place to stop the

58

spread of Avian Flu. We continued to hold a small auction of eggs and sundries on a Wednesday, but obviously we are delighted and relieved that we will now be able to get back to normal. The Poultry sales will take place every Wednesday at 11.30am, starting with the sale of sundries to include poultry equipment, garden tools and plants. This will then be followed by the sale of hen, quail, duck and goose eating eggs, followed by a wide variety of hatching eggs. Finally there will be the auction of all types of poultry, including a variety of breeds of hens, pullets, cockerels, ducks, geese, turkeys, pigeons and even ferrets!

If you would like to visit the Poultry Auctions, Penkridge Market is situated in the centre of Penkridge, and is signposted off the A449. It is easily accessible from Junction 12 of the M6 and is only 6 miles from Stafford; 7 miles from Cannock and 10 miles from Wolverhampton (postcode ST19 5AP). Admission and parking is free. For further information please call 01785 714221 or log onto the website, www.penkridgemarket.co.uk

Celebrating Positive Achievement

at Wolgarston High School A massive well done to

Holly Hopkinson in Year 9 at Wolgarston High School.

On Sunday 14th May,

Holly took part in Race For Life at Walsall

Arboretum. The Walsall

course runs along the many paths through the

Victorian part of the Park before passing the play area and back to the finish. Holly had to walk up two hills whilst pushing her aunty in her wheelchair.

The race was 5 kilometres and Holly completed

the course in 1 hour and 15 minutes with her aunty Anne Collins. Holly managed to raise £250 for Cancer Research.

Cancer Research funds scientists, doctors and nurses to help beat cancer sooner. They also

provide cancer information to the public and their policy development team develops evidence-

based policy to inform our government’s decisions related to cancer and its research.

“I am so proud that I was able to raise so much money with my aunty,” said Holly, “I am aching

today but you know what it was well worth it and amazing seeing everyone there working together to raise money for this important cause.”
