Local author launches new book

Three Noisy Chickens by Diane Pike To be blessed with children and then grandchildren is, in my mind nothing less than a gift! It was with this thought that I was inspired to tell and write stories just for them. A teacher for thirty years, I'd had plenty of practice in telling, reciting and reading stories, but when grandchildren began to arrive, I wanted to give them something more than verbal stories just produced off the top of my head. By the time my first grandchild arrived I had started a new hobby keeping chickens. And you would be quite right to wonder what possible connection keeping chickens has with writing children’s stories.

As well as looking after my three chickens and enjoying the many delicious eggs that they produced, I also noticed what comical, cheeky and very noisy characters they were. So it was they were given names (when keeping chickens don’t ever give them names if they are to end up in the pot – it’s not nice to eat your pets!) – And the

three noisy chickens became Heidi (of the Hills), Hetty (of the Heath) and Hildegard (of Bingen) later shortened to Heidi, Hetty and Hilda. I began to observe, make notes and take photographs of their natural behaviour such as ‘pecking’ order; habitual dust baths, scratching around for worms and most annoyingly of all, eating my plants and flowers when I foolishly allowed them in to the garden. However, I think what amused me the most was the many varied sounds and noises they produced to communicate, either with me or with each other, leading me to almost believe they were talking – or shouting – depending on the situation. For example when the neighbour’s cat had dared to enter the garden they all took on the role of cockerels and screeched aloud in cockerel cacophony warning what perils lay in wait for the trespasser. Over the weeks my collection of notes and photographs began to formulate into creative writing and I soon had a series of short stories about my ‘Three Noisy Chickens’ which I could tell or read to my grandchildren. The project grew further when Alan, my husband, suggested he illustrate the stories and have them published. ‘Heidi, Hetty and Hilda are chickens who live in a pen at the bottom of Grandma's garden and are the noisiest chickens you have ever heard. – But these three noisy chickens have a secret which nobody knows and they get up to all sorts of tricks... One trick makes Grandma laugh, another makes

her cross - but one thing makes Grandma very, very proud indeed of her THREE NOISY CHICKENS…’ As many new authors will agree, for me publishing the book has been a very, very steep learning curve and yet, after much self-determination and great support from friends and family I am able to begin the launch of ‘Three Noisy Chickens’ and now have another book ‘Three Noisy Chickens to the Rescue’ to be published later this month.

Duke of Edinburgh Awards Evening Wolgarston High School On Monday the 22nd June Wolgarston High School held its first ever Duke of Edinburgh awards presentation evening as a licensed centre. Mr Wood provided catering for the evening. “We received excellent feedback from the food the team and I had prepared,” said Mr Wood (Catering Co-ordinator), “The canapés with smoked salmon ,cream cheese and caviar were very popular, so were the spiced feta cheese with watermelon and fresh basil bites.”

The evening was organised by Mrs McCumiskey (DofE Manager and Teacher of ICT) and Mr Mitchell (DofE Coordinator and Second in Maths). The guest speaker for the evening was Shirley Henderson (former County DofE Manager). The evening included a power point presentation of what students and staff had experienced and achieved. “There is still a healthy interest from students to take part in the scheme,” said Mrs McCumiskey, “I love seeing our students on expedition, it is so rewarding to see what they achieve.” Shirley Henderson then took over and spoke about her passion for the scheme and her own personal experiences, “D of E is in my heart it will never leave it is always there,” said Shirley, “You learn a skill that stays with you for the rest of your life.” Each student volunteer is set with the task of volunteering 1 hour a week for section one. Shirley calculated that the students at Wolgarston had completed a minimum of 276 hours between them. “With all of the bad publicity you hear about young people you

In three weeks’ time all of the nine Gold Award students will be going to the Lake District for their Practice Expedition.

Mrs McCumiskey also thanked Mr Brown (Assistant Head of Design and Technology), Mrs Loftus and the Languages Department for their help in running courses for students to learn and develop their skills. The evening ended by seeing the presentation from The Glampers Silver Expedition. Their presentation was an A to Z of D of E, sharing what they had experienced and learnt along the way. They even incorporated Wolgarston’s five R’s; responsibility, resourcefulness, resilience, reflectiveness and reasoning. It was an amazing evening and we cannot wait until next year’s award ceremony.

Chillington Hall -

The hidden gem of Staffordshire Chillington Hall is a hidden gem on the Staffordshire/ Shropshire borders between the villages of Brewood and Codsall. The enchanting 18th century Georgian house, is a product of two differing Georgian styles. The South side built in 1724 by Francis Smith of Warwick, has rooms of an intimate size contrasted with those built on a far grander scale by Sir John Soane some sixty years later. The Saloon, typical of Soane design, features a soaring ceiling topped by a great lantern with beautiful plasterwork incorporating the family coat of arms and motto. The parkland, landscaped by Capability Brown, incorporates the magnificent lake and its architectural follies. It is accessed from a drive which runs alongside a manmade canal designed to give the impression of walking along a river bank.

Chillington Hall offers guided tours of this magnificent house and our knowledgeable guides will give you an in-depth history of this family home, its ancestors and contents.

A short walk from the Hall, through the arboretum, you will find the Chillington Model Farm. Its octagonal dovecote forms the centrepiece of an 18th century service courtyard including stables, barns, pig sties and acorn roasting house.

The Hall is also available for private hire and has been used for birthday celebrations, civil ceremonies, charity events and more recently as a filming location. Although Chillington Hall is a grand house it retains an intimate charm which makes it an ideal setting for entertaining.

Penkridge School scoops top prizes in Age UK South Staffordshire writing competition Age UK South Staffordshire Intergenerational Service have been overwhelmed by the standard of entries for their writing competition. The writing competition was open to the Key Stage 1 & 2 pupils in all the schools who currently host an AUKSS Children Matter volunteer. 14 schools entered and they received a staggering 369 entries across both Key Stages.

Princefield First School in Saxon Road, Penkridge is delighted to have secured winners in both categories and will receive a total of £300 in book tokens to be spent in the school library. Jacob and Ellie will both receive a WHSmith’s token of £50. The prizes will be presented by Linda Chapman at a special assembly at the school on July 8th and Linda will also deliver a writing workshop to the children.

“The quality of the writing and the imagination has amazed us” commented Lisa Hibbert, Children Matter Project Organiser “We asked the children to write about either ‘Granny Beryl’s Soup’ or ‘When I am older’, but the type of writing was left up to them. We received a number of poems and recipes alongside the stories”

The runners up both receive £25 tokens and £50 worth of books for their libraries. These prizes will be handed out by AUKSS staff before the end of term.

“We had the extremely difficult job of compiling a shortlist of 10 in each category” added Project Organiser, Debbie Wilkes “This proved impossible and we finally settled on 12 in KS1 and 14 in KS2” After much deliberation the winners and runners up were finally announced on 17th June. KS1 winner - Ellie Brown (age 6), Princefield First School, Penkridge. Runners up - Amelia Long (age 7), St James Primary School, Longdon. Erin Bates (age 6), St Michael’s First School, Penkridge. KS2 winner - Jacob Green (age 9), Princefield First School, Penkridge. Runners up - Talisa Dobb (age 10), John Wheeldon Primary Academy, Stafford. Faith Youd (age 11), Jerome Primary, Norton Canes.

In addition to the main prizes above, there is an AUKSS prize which will be awarded to the Age UK SS Favourite story. All staff based at The Roller Mill in Penkridge voted for their favourite and the winner of this prize is Harrison Horan at St Leonard’s First School, Dunston. Harrison will also receive a prize and Age UK SS have arranged a second writing workshop at the school by Linda Chapman as part of his prize. Judge author Anne Fine was delighted with all the entries she read “Something must be working well in Staffordshire schools, because the standard surprised me” she enthused, “These entries are a good deal better for the age groups concerned, than any I have judged for quite a while. Everyone should be really pleased about that.” Author Linda Chapman, also a judge, is looking forward to meeting

the young authors and has provided personalised feedback for all the shortlisted children. “What lovely entries” she said “I found it very difficult to make a definite decision” The winning stories will be published on the Age UK SS website. www.ageuk.org.uk/. southstaffs. Due to the standard of entries the team have decided to publish all the long listed entries in a book which will be compiled over the summer. Copies will be given to all the children whose work appears. The Children Matter Project recruits volunteers over the age of 50 to help out in local schools. Intergenerational Project Lead, Nigel Barrett explained “The main idea behind the project is to make sure that every child has the chance to read to an adult in school, to provide extra help to the class teacher to achieve this. Dream facilities for Penkridge Junior FC Youngsters secure dream result with £500,000 grant Young people and the wider community in and around South Staffordshire will soon benefit from a brand new synthetic football pitch and refurbished changing rooms. Nearly £500,000 has been granted to Wolgarston High School from the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund, which is delivered by the Football Foundation, and Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Fund, to build a new third generation (3G) artificial grass pitch (AGP) and upgrade the school’s changing facilities.

Cllr Mary Bond, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, South Staffordshire Council said: “This project is an excellent example of public and private organisations coming together for the good of people in South Staffordshire, and I look forward to seeing it progress.”

Penkridge Juniors FC, Stafford Rangers Juniors FC, Wolgarston High School, South Staffordshire Council and Staffordshire County Council secured the money, which will create state-of-the-art facilities for local football clubs. The changing rooms will be upgraded to accommodate a multitude of local sports clubs and teams that currently use the leisure centre, including those that travel to use the facilities from the surrounding Black Country. The site will play host to the majority of Penkridge JFC and Stafford Rangers JFC’s training and fixtures, and the Mid Staffs Junior Youth League will use the site for Mini-Soccer fixtures at Under 7 to Under 10 level. Wolves Community Trust will also use the pitch on weekly basis to deliver coaching sessions and inclusion projects. Funding for the scheme has come from two sources. The Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund has provided £342,803 for the pitch, while a further £150,000 has been given by the Inspired Facilities Fund for the changing rooms. Cllr Ben Adams, Cabinet Member for Learning and Skills at Staffordshire County Council commented: “This grant award is great news and means more people in South Staffordshire and beyond will have greater access to a wide variety of sports, be able to learn new skills and enjoy healthier, more active lifestyles.”

Norman Mence, Chairman, Penkridge JFC, added: “As Penkridge Juniors enter its 30th year, what better way to celebrate than seeing ideas come fruition thanks to hard work that is a credit to our Club, all partner organisations and the local community. This project will provide an outstanding opportunity for the Club with players being able to train and play on one of the best facilities in the region, and ultimately allow the Club to fulfil its development goals of adding Under 21 and adult teams to its roster.” Philip Tapp, Headteacher, Wolgarston High School, observed: “The school and local community will benefit immensely from the much improved facilities, which will also be available to the public and local community sports clubs. We are convinced that the project will help to inspire a new generation of sports men and women in the South Staffs area and beyond.” The funding will be further boosted by an extra £320,000 from Penkridge JFC, Stafford Rangers Juniors FC, Wolgarston High School, South Staffordshire Council and Staffordshire County Council.

New platform for wildlife centre in Stafford Nature lovers have been taking advantage of a new boardwalk at a picturesque spot in the centre of Stafford Town. Residents and visitors have been using the new viewing platform on the Kingsmead Marsh Local Nature Reserve to study flowers and other wildlife - especially during the recent sunny spells. Previously, people were unable to access the marsh area which runs alongside the busy Queensway in the middle of town. The boardwalk is made from recycled plastic and leads to a small viewing area which has a hand rail around it. An information sign by the entrance indicates a variety of wildflowers and birds that can be seen on the reserve.

Local optometrist saves pensioner’s sight after routine eye exam Colin Evans, a retired NHS worker from Penkridge is thanking a local optometrist for saving his sight after a regular eye exam indicated a serious health condition. David Elks, optometrist at Carolyn Parker Optometrists in Penkridge detected signs of glaucoma and referred him to a local accident and emergency unit, where Mr Evans was discharged without any further treatment. Adamant his patient’s sight was at serious risk, David referred Mr Evans via his GP to a specialist at County Hospital in Stafford who discovered he was suffering from advanced glaucoma. Without David’s insistence and the treatment Mr Evans received at the hospital, the situation could have caused blindness.

Mr Evans said: “I’m extremely grateful for the incredible care I received from David and his team. It’s down to him I still enjoy full sight in both my eyes today. I’d urge everyone to go for regular eye examinations, it could potentially save your sight.” David commented: “Colin had high pressure in his eyes which is a warning sign of glaucoma. Increased pressure presses on the optic nerve, causing damage to sufferers’ eyesight. Glaucoma can affect anybody, but the risk is substantially higher for the over 50’s and people of Asian or African-Caribbean backgrounds. “The best way to reduce the risk and ensure your eyes are healthy is to go for regular eye examinations.
