Girlguiding Penkridge says Goodbye and ‘Thank You’ to Diane Jones Former Wolgarston High School chemistry teacher Diane has been involved with Guiding for well over 20 years, (although one does not want to say the real number of years, as one does not like to give a lady’s age away) and has been a leader for 2nd Penkridge Guides. What can we say about her love of Guides, as well as being a leader, she has been a District Commissioner, Division International Advisor, Guide Development Co-ordinator, a Mentor, a County Co-ordinator and a Regional Trainer! She has had so many amazing moments the list would be endless but here are a few of Diane’s highlights… She likes nothing better than an outdoor fire – lit of course without a firelighter and obviously much better than any fire a Scout could light! Outdoor cooking on a fire is a favourite activity and if you cannot have a fire ‘cook on a candle’. Camps also wouldn’t be camp without Diane snoring (zzz...). Diane loves a weekend away; whether camping, glamping, city breaks, day trips or international trips – but they are always planned to the minute and action packed, ensuring we see and do as much as possible. As soon as we arrive anywhere, Diane has the kettle on and a cup of tea in hand. Unfortunately for the Guides, Diane is not a huge fan of shopping and a Guide away from home with spending money likes nothing more than shopping! – Diane has given many a deadline to meet outside in 5 minutes! She also loves a map – Diane leading at the front, the quickest route planned to get us from A to B – Diane would be ahead with 2/3 Guides who have managed to keep up with her whilst everyone else is daydreaming at the back! Guides don’t always like to walk, especially carrying their own bags! We’ve had great fun in the local area too, Cannock Chase being a favourite and shelter building. Diane always testing the shelter with the Guides inside and a bucket of water!

16

So we’ve had probably too many fun times to remember… Big Gig at Wembley, Manchester and Birmingham, Unity camps, New Jersey Girl Scout International trip, lots of different Thinking Day Celebrations, Alexandra Palace, numerous camps and holidays, singing in Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral,

Monopoly around London, sleepovers on many different floors, Zorbing, Mountain Boarding, Climbing, Rifle Shooting, Crate Stacking, Sailing, Canoeing and Raft Building; you name it, we’ve tried it. She has never moaned or complained whilst either being soaking wet, tired or up at 2am with someone who was feeling sick... those now infamous words of “get out the tent” (they were brand new!). Above all Diane has a real passion for Guiding and for every girl to reach their full potential, be in it a local activity or her encouragement of Guides taking part in International Events. Diane, on behalf of Girlguiding Penkridge and all the Penkridge girls that have passed through 2nd Penkridge Guides over the years - Thank you for all you have done and all the fantastic memories you have made. You will be missed.

Charity Road Run Success

Penkridge car enthusiast David Pearce has organised another popular summer road run which took place on Sunday 11th June.

Owners of any classic, collectable, unusual or just old vehicles were encouraged to meet at The Bridgehouse car park in Penkridge at 9:30am onwards for refreshments. The array of cars left the hotel at 11:30am for the short journey to the rally field at Cawarden Reclamations, just outside Rugeley, where anyone interested was able to view the vehicles and talk to the owners about their prized possessions.

Wolgarston High School Prom 2017 Celebrating learning and achieving together On Wednesday 21st June Wolgarston High School held its annual Year 11 prom at The Moat House in Acton Trussell. The event was organised by Mrs Wynn (Family-Links Coordinator). “It was a really amazing evening, we all had so much fun,” said Kiera Hope (Year 11 Student), “It is something we will never forget.” Parents and other students arrived at The Moat House for six o’clock to see the students making their entrances. This year there was a variety of different transportation used. They ranged from Ferraris, Lamborghinis, VW Camper vans, classic Minis to tractors. Students were greeted with custom made non-alcoholic cocktails and were seated at their tables in the main function room, where all of the students dined together on an exclusive three course menu. All of the students were given forms to vote for their Prom King and Queen. Once all of the votes had been counted up, the winners were announced. This year’s Prom King and Queen were Alex Lavender and Emily Harvey-Stephens. “As always it has been a pleasure to organise prom for our students and see them enjoying themselves after working so hard this year at school,” said Mrs Wynn, “They have all done Wolgarston proud.”

Alice in Wonderland including The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party 16th July 2017, 2pm–5pm As you all probably know since the closure of the village pub, The Vaughan Arms, Lapley villagers have had nowhere to meet socially and therefore it is the intention of Lapley Church Restoration Fund Committee to re-order the village church of All Saints to provide a community space as well as toilet and kitchen facilities. Planning permission from the church authorities have been granted but unfortunately the cost of this work will be in the region of £250,000. Therefore we, as a committee, have been busily fundraising to achieve this aim and although we are now in a position where we can apply for match funding grants it would be much easier if we had more money in the kitty! (Many grant making organisation require 50% of funds to have been raised before they will consider an application.) With this in mind, we would like to invite you to join us on Sunday 16th July. You will be able to follow the Scarecrow Trail, which starts and finishes at All Saints’ Church; All the scarecrows will

depict characters from the book ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and the Mad Hatter, March Hare and the Dormouse will be waiting for you in the church grounds where you are welcome to join the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. A raffle will be take place during the afternoon and cream teas will be on sale from 2:30pm. There will be games and activities to keep the children amused. This is only one of the many events which we organise throughout the year so please look out for adverts about future events. As well as holding events we have started a recycling scheme so if you have any empty inkjet cartridges, unwanted CDs/DVDs, old mobile phones or foreign currency please think of us and help us to make a greener world as well as raising funds for a good cause. (For more information please contact Janet on 01785 840334). We do hope that you will be able to support us by following the scarecrow trail and joining in the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party as it promises to be a very enjoyable fun-packed afternoon.

Safeguarding your eyes from the sun

g

As the summer months draw nearer, we start to daydream about sunsoaked holidays.

Macular degeneration -resulting from damage to the retina that destroys central vision. Macular degeneration is one of the leading causes of blindness in the UK.

Pterygium - a tissue growth over the white part of the surface of the eye that can alter the curve of the eyeball, causing astigmatism.

e

We all want to make the most of the sunshine. However, it’s important to ensure we’re taking the necessary steps to look after our eyes by wearing the correct eyewear.

r

Worryingly, when it comes to choosing

sour sunnies, not everyone sees

protecting their vision as being their number one reason for choosing a frame. In fact, only 28% of people see UV protection as being the most important factor for choosing their shades.

r n.

By choosing a pair of sunglasses that block out 99-100% of UVA and UVB rays, you greatly reduce the chance of over exposure to harmful light, helping to prevent: •

Cataracts - a clouding of the eye’s lens that can blur vision. An estimated 20% of cases are caused by extended UV exposure.

At Carolyn Parker Optometrists, we stock a wide range of eyewear offering 100% UVA and UVB protection. We offer a fitting service to ensure that your glasses are fully fitted to your face and prevent any light from reflecting up underneath or from the side of your glasses. We have a fantastic selection of frames from the world most prestigious brands including:

Penkridge WI

June Meeting Update The evening began with one of our members announcing that she has belonged to the group for 51 years. The lady’s name is Pauline Holden and she discovered this information when she was recently sifting through some paperwork. What she found were the, long thought mislaid, original badge and card she was presented with when she first joined the Penkridge WI. Pauline says she has enjoyed 51 glorious years belonging to the WI and enjoys it immensely. In her words, “The WI is an organisation that, in my opinion, gives more than it takes and we can all learn a lot. There is so much on offer, so anyone who has not experienced it and is willing to venture to a meeting and sit, look and listen, there is a lot to be gained.” Congratulations Pauline and may you be a member of our group for many happy years to come. Since last month’s meeting a number of us have thoroughly enjoyed a day out, taking in Masson Mill and Bakewell. To make the day complete the sun came out, as you can see by the photo that our coach driver kindly took for us.

The speaker for our June meeting was Mrs Parkes, talking about ‘The Inuit people of Labrador.’ Well, what a fascinating hour we had ahead of us! Accompanied by her husband showing some amazing slides, Mrs Parkes whisked us away to the freezing cold climes of Nain on the eastern coast of Canada. Together with a friend, after their nursing and midwifery training in England, these two 25yr olds decided they wanted to go to use their skills in Labrador, where there were few nurses and no midwives. From there they went to Nain, where there was 8 months of snow each year with temperatures going down to minus 40F. The working conditions were immensely challenging but the rewards the work gave them far outwayed this. Their work involved being on 24hr call out (they were the only nurses and midwives) and sometimes going for days without sleep. An interesting addition to their previous training was the removal of teeth. This involved a 1 hour lesson and a pair of pliers! (Something they hadn’t planned on having to learn and practice). One new dad was so pleased with their midwifery skills when delivering his daughter that he invited them to the christening, where he announced that the baby was being given the name Carolyn Susan. They were very flattered by this kind gesture but also amused at the thought of an Inuit girl having such an English sounding name. Mrs Parkes ended her talk by saying how privileged she felt to have been able to spend 2 and a half years amongst the Inuit people.

Visiting the mill was a real eye opener. It is the finest surviving and best preserved example of an Arkwright cotton mill. Our enthusiastic guide explained everything to us and started a few of the machines so we could actually see how they worked. What shocked us was the noise. We could not begin to imagine people having to cope with that constantly. After enjoying the floors of shops adjoining the mill, we went on to enjoy the delights of Bakewell. Coffee and Bakewell tart were a part of the afternoon for many of us. A big thank you to Jackie Sharman for organising the day for us.

50

We all found her presentation so interesting and could have easily listened to more if time had allowed. Our next meeting will be on Monday, July 3rd at 7:30pm in the Methodist Church Hall. ‘Gymslip and Chalkboards’ will be the subject of the talk by our speaker, Mrs Cath Reynolds. I’m sure there will be some amusing tales to be told and our competition is something associated with ‘school days’ New members are always welcome. You can contact our President, Mrs Sandra Bailey on 01785 712468 beforehand, or just turn up on the night.

Stafford Beer and Cider Festival 27th - 29th of July 2017 Just two months until the 10th Stafford Beer and Cider Festival opens! This years festival is due to take place from Thursday 27th July - Saturday 29th July 2017. Thankfully I have an excellent team of volunteers working with me to make this festival happen. This is my first time in terms of the role of Festival Organiser and I have a hard act to follow but I am determined to make this the most successful festival yet! The committee want to make our 10th anniversary special and one to remember, therefore we decided to come up with a theme for this years festival which you will see used on all of our publicity material and glasses this year. A bright spark, (we do have a few!) came up with the pirate theme, ‘X’ marks the spot (‘X’ being ten in roman numerals). We want to attract even more families along to the family friendly sessions on the Friday and Saturday afternoons. There will be face painters, bouncy castle, a brass band and we are looking for children and adults to dress up in pirate fancy dress for those sessions (a fancy dress competition is something we are considering). We will be dressing the bars and calling them ‘Starboard’ and ‘Port’ this year as well as bringing in pirate named beers from some of the local and national breweries.

fabulous band called Stone Cold Sober, ish (Check them out at: www.facebook.com/stonecoldsoberuk/). On the Saturday night, we have a very talented lady joining us, www.alexandrajaynemusic.com and on the Saturday afternoon we have our regular Brass Band, www.blackwellconcertband.co.uk who will be sure to get your feet tapping! It’s not too late to be a sponsor at the festival, please contact Andy Murray via email, reddrobbo@hotmail.com or Kelly Porter, kellycamraheartofstaffordshire@gmail.com. Please contact myself at paul.hewitt100@hotmail. co.uk if you would like to get involved. We still need volunteers, the more the merrier! There is a link on our website, for more information see: http://www.staffordbeerfestival.co.uk/ and click on the volunteers tab. We especially need helpers for setup and takedown but every little helps, even a few hours. We hope to see you at this year’s festival, please come and say hello!

We have nearly seventy beers (I expect this number may well grow!) We have worked hard to provide a fantastic choice of beers this year, and look out for some old favourites too! Also available, will be 30+ ciders and a range of country wines and bottled beers. Keep up to date with the latest news about the festival on Twitter (@StaffsBeerFest) and also Facebook (search for ‘Stafford Beer Festival’). We have two chosen charities to support this year, the Stafford and Rugeley branch of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and Stafford’s own House of Bread. Both are very worthy causes which will benefit from your unspent beer tokens. See more information at www.rnli.org and www.hobstafford.co.uk. For your entertainment this year we have the following bands appearing at the festival on Friday Night, a

After the meal, President Val Jones introduced the first speaker of her year in office: Colonel Chris Comport, whose topic was The Army Benevolent Fund – the Soldiers Charity. During his often light hearted talk he managed to pass on some serious and important information about the work of the
